Effectiveness Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In Children, Adolescents And Young Adults With Poorly Controlled Type 1 Diabetes, Kevin R. Lewis
Effectiveness Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In Children, Adolescents And Young Adults With Poorly Controlled Type 1 Diabetes, Kevin R. Lewis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Type 1 diabetes is the second most common chronic illness seen in children. Children, adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes are provided care in programs with diabetes educators, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, dietitians, and many other specialists. Even though children, adolescents and young adults receive care from many providers, their diabetes is often not in good control. In the last 10 years a new device called a continuous glucose monitor has been developed for use with people with diabetes. This new device documents the blood sugar levels in people with diabetes between finger stick blood sugar tests.;Objectives: …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Limitations in bioassessments of stream condition should be recognized and a need exists to broaden our approach to identify and solve knowledge gaps in scientific data. Combining collection methods based upon biological data and social perceptions may provide an effective way to identify gaps and involve local stakeholders in river conservation strategies. Our research objectives were to: 1- describe recreational users and their perceptions of water quality; 2- quantify relationships between recreational user perceptions and biological condition; 3- examine if perceptions vary spatially across watersheds; and 4- determine if recreational users' values and perceptions can be used to complement bioassessment …
Three Essays On Crime, Hernan Botero Degiovanni
Three Essays On Crime, Hernan Botero Degiovanni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation, I use the tools of economics to analyze two forms of crime --- property and violent crime --- in order to investigate three specific incentives that induce them. First, I develop a property crime model with secondary markets for stolen durable goods where agents can be thieves who steal durable goods to consume or exchange them for a profit, and non-thieves who can also demand stolen durable goods in the secondary market. The results indicate that the government must focus their resources to capture thieves on the streets in order to minimize their number in the economy. …
Aerodynamic Parameter Identification Of A Venus Lander, Robert A. Sykes
Aerodynamic Parameter Identification Of A Venus Lander, Robert A. Sykes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An analysis was conducted to identify the parameters of an aerodynamic model for a Venus lander based on experimental free-flight data. The experimental free-flight data were collected in the NASA Langley 20-ft Vertical Spin Tunnel with a 25-percent Froude-scaled model. The experimental data were classified based on the wind tunnel run type: runs where the lander model was unperturbed over the course of the run, and runs were the model was perturbed (principally in pitch, yaw, and roll) by the wind tunnel operator. The perturbations allow for data to be obtained at higher wind angles and rotation rates than those …
The Role Of Neurokinin B In The Regulation Of The Preovulatory Lh Surge In Ewes, Katrina L. Porter
The Role Of Neurokinin B In The Regulation Of The Preovulatory Lh Surge In Ewes, Katrina L. Porter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hypothalamic input is vital to the regulation of reproductive function. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is secreted by hypothalamic GnRH neurons into the hypophysial portal circulation. When GnRH reaches the anterior pituitary, it stimulates gonadotropes to secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) into the systemic circulation, ultimately leading to ovulation. GnRH/LH secretion occurs in two different patterns: pulsatile or surge. Pulsatile GnRH release is governed by estradiol (E2) negative feedback while surge release is the result of E2 positive feedback. However, GnRH neurons lack the alpha isoform of the estrogen receptor, indicating that E2 feedback on GnRH release is indirect. Other hypothalamic neurons that …
Subsurface Paleo-Stream Reach Reconstruction And Classification Using Seismic Data Interpretation, Benjamin Ward Dotson
Subsurface Paleo-Stream Reach Reconstruction And Classification Using Seismic Data Interpretation, Benjamin Ward Dotson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Incorporating the techniques and applications used in the 3D seismic geophysical interpretations with the Rosgen (1996) stream classification, this study was able to identify paleo-stream reaches in the Frio Formation within the Stratton 3D seismic data set. Hydraulic geometry variables from Rosgen's classification scheme were used to classify paleo-stream reaches shown in the seismic data. Estimated paleo-discharges were reconstructed to compare the potential magnitude of flow in the paleo-stream reaches to that in modern rivers in Texas and Mississippi. However, classification and discharge results were accompanied with a high margin of error and many uncertainties regarding the stream channel's geometry …

Floc-Spanner: An O(1) Time, Locally Self-Stabilizing Algorithm For Geometric Spanner Construction In A Wireless Sensor Network, Goutham Ranganath
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Geometric spanners are a popular form of topology control in wireless networks because they yield an efficient, reduced interference subgraph for both unicast and broadcast routing.;In this thesis work a distributed algorithm for creation of geometric spanners in a wireless sensor network is presented. Given any connected network, we show that the algorithm terminates in O(1) time, irrespective of network size. Our algorithm uses an underlying clustering algorithm as a foundation for creating spanners, and only relies on the periodic heartbeat messages associated with cluster maintenance for the creation of the spanners. The algorithm is also shown to stabilize locally …

Composite Multifunctional Lithium Ion Batteries, Joshua Mullenax
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this work was to design a battery that serves as the structural material as well as the power source for a transportation vehicle. The combination of both mechanical and electrochemical aspects within one material defines the component as a multifunctional material, or in this case, a multifunctional battery. The design of the composite multifunctional batteries for optimal performance involves the proper selection of the materials, architecture, and electrical interconnection. The ultimate goal is to incorporate a battery with a continuous composite fibrous fabric within the structured composite skin of a vehicle (such as an automobile or aircraft).;This …
Analyzing The Impact Of Wireless Multi-Hop Networking On Vehicular Safety, Rudhir Upretee
Analyzing The Impact Of Wireless Multi-Hop Networking On Vehicular Safety, Rudhir Upretee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the core challenges of Intelligent Transportation System is the dissemination of timely and accurate vehicle information (e.g. speed, position) to geographically large distances without compromising data supply rates from immediate neighbors. This feature is critical for the design of vehicle safety and navigation applications. Single hop broadcasting is often inadequate to ensure vehicle safety when the platoon size is arbitrarily large due to its upper bound on rate and range of wireless message transmission. Existing wireless multi-hop protocols do not ensure reliable message delivery while avoiding network congestion in the shared channel. In this thesis, we make two …
The Political Economy Of U.S. Public Pension Plans And Their Unfunded Liabilities, Dashle Gunn Kelley
The Political Economy Of U.S. Public Pension Plans And Their Unfunded Liabilities, Dashle Gunn Kelley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chapter 1 applies a public choice approach to the problem of unfunded pension liabilities and adopts the methodology of Congleton and Shughart (1990) to model underfunding of state-level public pension plans using the median voter theorem, along with the theory of "capture" by special interest groups, and a combined model of the two. With panel data from 2001 to 2009, the paper finds that the combined model provides the strongest explanation for the current levels of unfunded liabilities; hence, both median voter preferences and special interest group influence are affecting political outcomes. The special interest group model slightly outperforms the …
An Experimental Investigation Of The Creep Behavior Of An Underground Coalmine Roof With Shale Formation, Priyesh Verma
An Experimental Investigation Of The Creep Behavior Of An Underground Coalmine Roof With Shale Formation, Priyesh Verma
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stability of the roof in an underground coalmine is imperative for safe and efficient mining. Mining of the coal seam disturbs the natural equilibrium of the in-situ stresses in the surrounding rock. Because of the opening, the surrounding stratum deforms to fill the opening and return to the pre-mining stress state. Such deformation, if allowed to continue, will lead to failure of the strata, which creates an unsafe work environment. Therefore, supports are used to reinforce the deforming strata and help prevent any further deformation in the rock.;However, various mines have reported failures in the supported entries (MSHA, 2013). These …
Calibrating The Lamodel Program For Shallow Cover Multiple-Seam Mines, Morgan M. Sears
Calibrating The Lamodel Program For Shallow Cover Multiple-Seam Mines, Morgan M. Sears
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stable underground mine openings are fundamental to ensuring the safety of miners and providing a safe work environment. During the past decade, approximately 40% of underground mining fatalities were caused by roof falls, rib collapses, or bumps/bursts, 19% of which occurred during retreat mining (Pappas and Mark, 2012). In addition, approximately 600 miners are non-fatally injured (often severely) every year by rock falls in coal mines (Pappas and Mark, 2012).;To help with designing stable mine pillars in deep-cover situations, a new calibration method for deep-cover pillar retreat mining was developed and implemented into the LaModel 3.0 program a few years …
Numerical And Experimental Study On The Ability Of Dynamic Roughness To Alter The Development Of A Leading Edge Vortex, Christopher D. Griffin
Numerical And Experimental Study On The Ability Of Dynamic Roughness To Alter The Development Of A Leading Edge Vortex, Christopher D. Griffin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dynamic stall is an unsteady aerodynamic phenomenon garnering much research interest because it occurs in a variety of applications. For example, dynamic stall is known to occur on helicopter rotor blades, wind turbines, high maneuvering military aircraft, and flapping wings. Dynamic stall occurs when an aerodynamic lifting device, such as an airfoil, wing, or turbomachine blade, undergoes a rapid pitching motion. It also occurs on lifting devices that are impulsively started at high angles of attack. Dynamic stall can "delay" aerodynamic stall to angles of attack that are significantly beyond the static stall angle of attack.;During dynamic stall a large …

Meeting The Demand For Local Food In West Virginia: An Analysis Of Factors Influencing Producers' Market Participation And Expansion Decisions, Ruth Mary Oldham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Increasing demand in local food markets in WV offers a new or enhanced income generation opportunity to small producers. An ostensible gap in supply to meet this demand sparks an investigation of the factors that influence producers' decisions, as reflected by their behavior and intentions, to participate and expand in local food markets. The factors that influence both the behavior of current commercial producers and potential new entrants are identified through analysis of data collected through a survey of producers identified by field professionals. Specifically, the influence of motivational and place-based sociocultural characteristics, based on guidance from social psychology Theory …

Stable And Fair Congestion Control Mechanisms For Cooperative Vehicle Safety In Vehicular Networks, Neda Nasiriani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cooperative vehicle safety (CVS) systems operate based on broadcast of vehicle position and safety information to neighboring cars. The communication medium of CVS is a Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) wireless channel. One of the main challenges in large scale deployment of CVS systems is the issue of scalability. To address the scalability problem, several congestion control methods have been proposed and are currently under field study. These mechanisms adapt transmission rate and power, based on network measures such as: Channel Busy Ratio (CBR), packet reception rate and vehicles tracking error. Channel Busy Ratio (CBR) is defined as the ratio …
Red-Headed Woodpecker Habitat Selection And Breeding Ecology On Fort Drum Military Installation, New York, Jacob L. Berl
Red-Headed Woodpecker Habitat Selection And Breeding Ecology On Fort Drum Military Installation, New York, Jacob L. Berl
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) populations have declined range-wide over the past 40 years, although the causal mechanisms implicated in the observed declines remain poorly understood. Population decline has been most severe at the periphery of their range, particularly in the northeastern United States, coinciding with a region where there is little information regarding red-headed woodpecker habitat use or demography. A detailed knowledge of habitat requirements and population dynamics is prerequisite for the effective conservation and management of imperiled wildlife populations, and this knowledge gap likely precludes informed management decisions for red-headed woodpeckers in the northeastern portion of their range. In …

A Correlational Study To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Behavior-Based Safety In An Offshore Oil Production Facility, Zinga Martine Branco
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For many countries, oil production constitutes a large part of their economic resources. It is also one of the most hazardous activities with high incident rates. Workplace safety has remained a challenge for these industries which strive to operate injury free. Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) is used as a safety intervention approach to minimize the frequency and severity of workplace incidents and injuries. Many companies assume BBS is effective in reducing injuries and losses. However, only anecdotal evidence is usually presented to support the effectiveness of BBS in decreasing incident rates.;This study explores the relationship between Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) outcomes and …

Optimization Of A Coded-Modulation System With Shaped Constellation, Xingyu Xiang
Optimization Of A Coded-Modulation System With Shaped Constellation, Xingyu Xiang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Conventional communication systems transmit signals that are selected from a signal constellation with uniform probability. However, information-theoretic results suggest that performance may be improved by shaping the constellation such that lower-energy signals are selected more frequently than higher-energy signals. This dissertation presents an energy efficient approach for shaping the constellations used by coded-modulation systems. The focus is on designing shaping techniques for systems that use a combination of amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) and low-density parity check (LDPC) coding. Such a combination is typical of modern satellite communications, such as the system used by the DVB-S2 standard.;The system implementation requires …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2010), 12.9% of the population in the United States is that of immigrants. With this increase in recent immigration, the population of limited English speakers has also increased which includes both children and adults. While much research has been done in terms of how bilingualism and biculturalism have impacted the children within immigrant families, very few studies have focused on the parents and how the children's English language learning and acculturation have impacted their own English learning and acculturation. This study was intended to fill that lack of research by exploring the sociolinguistic impact …

Emotion Regulation And Cardiovascular Response To Emotion Provocation: Reappraisal Versus Suppression, Casey E. Cavanagh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Emotion regulation is a process through which individuals alter the subjective, behavioral and physiological responses to emotional experiences. Within the emotion regulation model, reappraisal and suppression are two strategies that have been studied extensively. However, this research has largely ignored the effects of individual differences in emotion regulation when examining reappraisal and suppression. The purpose of this study was to examine individual differences in reappraisal and suppression (e.g., one's preferred emotion regulation strategy) as well as examining the effects of instructional use of reappraisal and suppression. In the present study, participants, classified as habitual reappraisers and habitual suppressors, engaged in …
Correlation Of Photocatalytic Activity With Band Structure Of Low-Dimensional Semiconductor Nanostructures, Fanke Meng
Correlation Of Photocatalytic Activity With Band Structure Of Low-Dimensional Semiconductor Nanostructures, Fanke Meng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Photocatalytic hydrogen generation by water splitting is a promising technique to produce clean and renewable solar fuel. The development of effective semiconductor photocatalysts to obtain efficient photocatalytic activity is the key objective. However, two critical reasons prevent wide applications of semiconductor photocatalysts: low light usage efficiency and high rates of charge recombination. In this dissertation, several low-dimensional semiconductors were synthesized with hydrothermal, hydrolysis, and chemical impregnation methods. The band structures of the low-dimensional semiconductor materials were engineered to overcome the above mentioned two shortcomings. In addition, the correlation between the photocatalytic activity of the low-dimensional semiconductor materials and their band …
