Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) has been one of the biggest problem concerning the climate change during these years. The concentration of these gases has increased by a disproportionate amount over the last decade due to human activities such as, deforestation, agricultural practices and burning fuel, oil and coal while natural sources are extracted and processed. Being the main cause of global warming, a variety of technology is being applied in order to diminish GHC emissions. There are two ways to achieve this goal: burning less carbon-containing fuel or by storing CO2 resulting from burning carbon-rich fuels. Potential storage …

Planning Development: International Experts, Agricultural Policy, And The Modernization Of Nigeria, 1945-1967, Bekeh Utietiang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The period after the Second World War was a significant moment in British colonialism in Nigeria. It was the height of the decolonization movements in many of Britain's colonial holdings and was the cradle of what David Low and J. M. Lonsdale call the "second colonial occupation." This occupation in which the British government carried out expansive development policies was an intentional attempt to wrestle with social unrest due to the neglect of the social welfare of the people during the Great Depression and in the period thereafter. Such a development vision was represented by the passage of the 1940 …

Advanced Doc-Dpf Model To Predict Soot Accumulation And Pressure Drop In Diesel Particulate Filters, Alessandro Cozzolini
Advanced Doc-Dpf Model To Predict Soot Accumulation And Pressure Drop In Diesel Particulate Filters, Alessandro Cozzolini
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are regarded as the most effective technology to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions from modern diesel engines. PM mass collected inside the filter needs to be periodically oxidized to clean the porous walls in order to avoid excessive backpressure that could negatively affect engine and turbocharger performances leading to higher fuel consumption. Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs), on the other hand, represent an effective means to reduce hydrocarbon (HC) emissions and set the proper chemical conditions at the inlet of the DPF to enhance soot oxidation during filter regeneration. Due to the impact that these devices have …

Creation Of In Vitro Disease Models Using Micro-Nanoengineering, Allison Bruce
Creation Of In Vitro Disease Models Using Micro-Nanoengineering, Allison Bruce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cells are typically housed in a complex microenvironment (ECM) in vivo, where the cells interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and neighboring cells. The ECM provides physical support for cells and affects cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression. Primary components of the ECM include fibrous proteins which contribute significant nanotopography cues to cells. Due to limitations of two-dimensional (2-D) in vitro studies where cells are cultured on flat, plastic substrates, the conventional cell culture does not mimic the in vivo scenario. This manifests the critical need for biomimetic cell culture platforms which mimic the in vivo microenvironment. During …

Implications Of Nedd9 On Aurka Activity: A Biomarker For Sensitization And Therapeutic Target In Solid Tumors, Ryan Joseph Ice
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The spread of cancer, known as metastasis, is the major cause of relapse and inability to cure disease. Invasion of cancer cells into neighboring tissue and to distant sites allows cancer cells to evade therapeutic agents, due to the low therapeutic penetration of certain tissues such as the central nervous system, and eliminates the feasibility of resection; which is why the study of pro-metastatic proteins is of great urgency, one such protein is NEDD9. NEDD9 is overexpressed in various tumor types and is correlated with poor prognosis due to a more invasive and metastatic phenotype. NEDD9 serves as a scaffolding …

Gender And Financial Risk Tolerance Across The Life Span, Philip Lemaster
Gender And Financial Risk Tolerance Across The Life Span, Philip Lemaster
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Past research indicates that men tend to be more financially risk tolerant than women, and declines in self-reported risk tolerance are common with age. A life-span sample of adult men and women were recruited to investigate these gender- and age-related patterns using an ecologically valid measure of financial risk tolerance. As previously found, men reported greater risk tolerance than women, and risk tolerance declined with age. Biological mechanisms, such as testosterone, are often implicated in men's tendency to be more financially risk tolerant than women. In the present study, psychological gender mechanisms (i.e., masculine traits and roles, feminine traits, gender …
L'Intention Mal Comprise : Les Meres Indignes De La Comtesse De Segur, Kristina Kiisk
L'Intention Mal Comprise : Les Meres Indignes De La Comtesse De Segur, Kristina Kiisk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sophie de Segur is a very well-known 19th century French children's author. Her books were and are still widely read and appreciated by children. However, she has been often criticized by literary scholars of the 20th and 21st century due to the fact that there is a lot of violence present in her novels. In addition, it has been suggested that her only goal was to educate and moralize her young readers. This opinion, however, reduces the multifaceted work of the comtesse to a purely didactic literature and we fail to recognize that her writing suggests a much deeper significance …

Biometric systems are widely deployed in governmental, military and commercial/civilian applications. There are a multitude of sensors and matching algorithms available from different vendors. This creates a competitive market for these products, which is good for the consumers but emphasizes the importance of interoperability. In fingerprint recognition, interoperability is the ability of a system to work with a diverse set of fingerprint devices. Variations induced by fingerprint sensors include image resolution, scanning area, gray levels, etc. Such variations can impact the quality of the extracted features, and cross-device matching performance. This is true even when dealing with fingerprint sensors of …
Synchronization Behavior In Coupled Chemical Oscillators, Simbarashe Nkomo
Synchronization Behavior In Coupled Chemical Oscillators, Simbarashe Nkomo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Synchronization is a collective phenomenon emerging from the interactions of different dynamical systems. Systems with different characteristics adjust their behavior to a common behavior of the group. This collective behavior is observed in many biological, chemical, and physical systems. Examples from different fields include pacemaker heart cells, synchronization of neurons during epilepsy seizures, arrays of microwave oscillators, and robot manipulators. Studies of coupled oscillators have revealed different mechanisms by which discrete oscillators interact and organize to a uniform synchronized state from an incoherent state. The discovery of a new type of synchronization state, called the chimera state has further broadened …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
OBJECTIVES: A complex process of physiological and environmental changes during the postpartum period confounds our understanding of the discrete impacts of postpartum sleep fragmentation. The aim of this dissertation was to isolate the effects of postpartum sleep fragmentation by manipulating the sleep of childless women in the laboratory to model a postpartum sleep fragmentation schedule. Actigraphically and polysomnographically-recorded sleep, daytime functioning, mood, and melatonin amplitude were quantified.;METHODS: Eleven healthy, childless women (25.4 [SD+/-2.3] years, 72.7% white, {dollar}23,000 [SD+/-{dollar}11,000] household income) contributed continuous wrist actigraphy and daily psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) for one baseline week followed by 3 consecutive nights of …
Modeling Of Caprock Seal Failure Due To Fluid Injection, Hari Kiran Nambu
Modeling Of Caprock Seal Failure Due To Fluid Injection, Hari Kiran Nambu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The past, present, and projected trends of increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration levels in the atmosphere have raised serious concerns about global warming. Several efforts are being made to stabilize the current levels of CO2 emissions. Geologic sequestration of CO2 in deep saline aquifers is considered to be one of the potential options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. A tight, low-permeability caprock layer overlying the CO2-targeted reservoir limits the upward migration of CO2 and acts as a primary seal layer to trap CO 2. Large volumes of fluid or CO2 injected in the subsurface may over-pressurize the …
The Development Of An Insect Succession Model Suitable For Time-Since-Death Statistics, Anne E. Perez
The Development Of An Insect Succession Model Suitable For Time-Since-Death Statistics, Anne E. Perez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For academic carrion insect succession studies to be applicable to forensic casework, the study must provide statistically defensible postmortem interval (PMI) estimates. Multiple statistical approaches have been used to describe insect succession, but no study to date has been able to determine a confidence interval about a succession based PMI estimate. The ability to reject PMI values, and thereby create a confidence interval is determined by statistical power, of which sample size is a positive correlate. A proposed model established prospective sample sizes for desired levels of statistical power, indicating a target sample size of ~50 carcasses for estimating PMI …
"It's Not Just Your Dad And It's Not Just Your Coach..." The Dual-Role Relationship In Female Tennis Players, Olivier N. Schmid
"It's Not Just Your Dad And It's Not Just Your Coach..." The Dual-Role Relationship In Female Tennis Players, Olivier N. Schmid
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Parents and coaches were encouraged to keep their roles separate in order to promote optimal youth sport participation and avoid excessive and pressuring involvement (Gould, et al., 2008; Wolfenden & Hoyt, 2005). Despite these recommendations, the phenomenon of parents volunteering to coach their own children has dramatically increased (Brown, 1998). Managing the blurred boundaries of these coaching dual-role relationships throughout the athlete's development is a delicate endeavor and remains unexplored in individual sports (Jowett, 2008; Weiss & Fretwell, 2005). Tennis has been identified as an ideal context to examine the dynamics of parenting and coaching relationships and is notorious for …
Charles Le Brunr's Expressions For The Glory Of The King: The Salon De La Guerre And The Salon De La Paix At The Chateau De Versailles, Amy Swan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF) demonstrate relatively poor treatment adherence in comparison to other age groups, which can lead to adverse health outcomes. Though previous research has examined various factors associated with treatment adherence in pediatric CF samples, no studies to date have explored the interrelations among self-efficacy, parental style, level of responsibility for CF care, and treatment adherence in this population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the role of self-efficacy, parental style, and level of responsibility for CF care in predicting treatment adherence in adolescents with CF. A sample of 59 adolescents with CF (M …
Development Of Carbon-Carbon, Carbon-X Bond Formation Reactions Through Goldlewis Acid Catalysis, Yumeng Xi
Development Of Carbon-Carbon, Carbon-X Bond Formation Reactions Through Goldlewis Acid Catalysis, Yumeng Xi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Homogenous gold(I) catalysis has experienced an explosive growth over the past decade. The efficiency towards activation of alkyne, allene, and alkene renders cationic gold complexes unique in the organic synthesis. Despite the great progression, this area still suffers significantly from catalyst decomposition and low reactivity. In the past, our group introduced triazole-gold(I) complex (TA-Au) as a novel class of cationic gold complex with improved thermal stability and unique chemoselectivity. However, it was proved that TA-Au also showed lower reactivity. To overcome this paradox, compatible Lewis acid is used as the compatible additive for improving catalyst performance while maintaining enough stability. …
Microfluidic Gradient Device For Studying The Mesothelial Cells' Migration And Effects Of Carbon Nanotubes Chronic Exposure, Hanyuan Zhang
Microfluidic Gradient Device For Studying The Mesothelial Cells' Migration And Effects Of Carbon Nanotubes Chronic Exposure, Hanyuan Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cell migration is one of the crucial steps in many human physiological events and diseases, including cancers. Recent studies have shown that carbon nanotubes (CNTs), like asbestos, can induce accelerated cell growth and invasiveness that contribute to their mesothelioma pathogenicity. Malignant mesothelioma is a very aggressive tumor that develops from cells of the mesothelium, and is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. CNTs have similar structure and mode of exposure to asbestos. This has raised a particular concern regarding the potential carcinogenicity of CNTs, especially in the pleural spaces, which are key target tissues for asbestos-related diseases.;In this thesis, …
