The Political Economy Of Pork-Barrel Spending, J. Zachary Klingensmith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of five papers which examine the impact pork-barrel spending has on legislative decision-making. In chapter 1, I introduce the theory behind pork-barrel spending, legislative coalitions and other similar topics. In chapter 2, I determine if pork-barrel spending has any impact on state employment levels. I use both a spatial and non-spatial modeling methodology to answer the question. Chapter 3 examines the relationship between the amount of pork-barrel spending appropriated by the Senator and the amount of money the Senator is able to fundraise. Chapter 4 integrates the results from chapter 3 to develop two-stage and three-stage models …
The Rail And The Cross In West Virginia Timber Country: Rethinking Religion In The Appalachian Mountains, Joseph F. Super
The Rail And The Cross In West Virginia Timber Country: Rethinking Religion In The Appalachian Mountains, Joseph F. Super
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia underwent significant changes in the four decades between 1880 and 1920. The Gilded Age and the Progressive Era witnessed political, social, cultural, and economic upheavals as industrialists looked to exploit natural resources and propel the Mountain State into a position of leadership in a modern national economy. Railroads opened up the remote interior counties, paving the way for the oil, coal, and timber industries. The West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway, under the direction of Henry Gassaway Davis, scaled the highest peaks of the Allegheny Mountains. Davis and his business associates quickly took control of the timber and …

Acetylene is known as an essential chemical building block with increasing prominent applications as a raw material in the production of important organic compounds. An indirect method used to synthesize acetylene is through the decomposition of CaC2 in the presence of water. The current work investigated a process for the synthesis of calcium carbide via a solid-state reaction route and the general kinetics of the reaction was characterized. The calcium carbide was synthesized by conventional and microwave heating (6 kW, 2.45GHz) of micron-sized calcium oxide and carbon powders in argon. The temperature range for these reactions was between 1000--1800°C. The …
Application Of Nano Fluids In Changing Reservoir Rock And Fluid Properties For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Mohammad Ehtemam Haghighi
Application Of Nano Fluids In Changing Reservoir Rock And Fluid Properties For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Mohammad Ehtemam Haghighi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In conventional oil reservoirs after drilling a well, the hydrocarbon starts to produce by the natural force of the reservoir. After a period of production the reservoir energy declines and the secondary recovery methods are used to keep the production rate constant. The most common secondary method is water flooding in which by injecting water into the reservoir, trapped oil is pushed toward the producing wells. Water flooding is not a long term method for producing oil and as soon as the water finds its path to the producers, water cut goes up and injection is not economical anymore. Therefore …
Robust Control Design For Non-Linear Loads In Ac-Dc System, Rehan Fazal
Robust Control Design For Non-Linear Loads In Ac-Dc System, Rehan Fazal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electric power system is complex interconnected system that is subjected to rapid change in its structure. Addition of new equipment, operation close to stability limits and variation in load in summer and winter are some factors that make power system unstable and introduce electro-mechanical oscillations in the system.;Electro-mechanical oscillations of small magnitude often persist for long periods of time and restrict the power transfer capacity. These oscillations can further increase with the variation in load and system operating points. To stabilize the power system different control strategies are used to damp the oscillations. In the past, the dynamic stability of …
Comparing The Educational Preferences And Management Roles Of West Virginia's Male And Female Woodland Owners, Tiffany Fegel
Comparing The Educational Preferences And Management Roles Of West Virginia's Male And Female Woodland Owners, Tiffany Fegel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Non-industrial private forest owners (NIPF) make up the majority of the landscape in the eastern United States. Historically NIPF owners have been treated as a homogenous group. This however does not adequately represent the diversity of this population's ownership objectives, management concerns, and land values that are important in understanding how to tailor educational outreach programs to this group. Butler (2008) called for the need to separate this large population into smaller populations that are more homogenous in order to better reach them with educational programs. To answer this call we divided NIPF owners into two distinct groups, male and …

Division I College Student-Athlete Career Situation And Attitudes Toward Career Counseling, Adrian J. Ferrera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Few student-athletes advance to the professional level following their collegiate athletic career, leaving many to pursue alternative career paths. Although much attention has been dedicated to student-athlete academic progress and graduation rates, little attention has been given to student-athlete career development and their attitudes toward career counseling. Since the career development of student-athletes is complex and is affected by several variables, the purposes of the present study were threefold: 1) determine the career situation of male and female student-athletes attending an NCAA Division I university, 2) determine if differences existed between student-athletes and non-athlete students in their attitudes toward career …
Constitutional Amendments And The Consolidation Of The Rule Of Law In Democratizing Francophone West Africa: Case Study Of Benin, Burkina Faso, And Senegal, Bagnini Kohoun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Constitutional stability is usually perceived as an invaluable asset in democratic regimes. Constitutional amendments become suspicious when they occur too often, particularly in countries newly engaged in the democratic process. This dissertation argues that recent constitutional amendments in democratizing Francophone West African countries are not necessarily made to advance democracy or the rule of law. Instead, they are designed to reinforce the political agenda of incumbent power-holders. Using a case study of three Francophone African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, and Senegal), I try to understand why there are so many constitutional amendments in so short a period of time in …

Numerical Modeling Of Inertial Flows In Proppant-Reservoir Rock Interfaces, Abdulla Alkaabi
Numerical Modeling Of Inertial Flows In Proppant-Reservoir Rock Interfaces, Abdulla Alkaabi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Predicting accurate pressure drops in the reservoirs is essential for estimating the ultimate hydrocarbons recoveries and production rates. In hydraulically fractured wells, inertial flows can cause excessive pressure drops, beyond the predicted values form the Darcy equation. Therefore, predicting these excessive pressure drops through defining non-Darcy factors is of particular significance.;Excessive pressure drops in inertial flows are caused by acceleration/deceleration of fluids, which usually occur when fluids are moving from constricted areas to larger pores and vice versa. In the interface between the propped fracture and the reservoir rock, the pores in the latter are in connection with the former …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this work, data from isotope exchange - secondary ion mass spectrometry (IE-SIMS) and electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) experiments are analyzed using a purely Bayesian approach. The new technique allows quantification of the uncertainty associated with fitting two parameters (the surface exchange coefficient, k, and the bulk diffusion coefficient, D) to a single reaction-diffusion model. The behavior and reliability of the technique is analyzed by considering an idealized data set, where the parameters of interest are pre-defined. The associated MCMC routine finds the parameter location in less than 5,000 samples, despite the starting point being 8 orders of magnitude away. …
