Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

ABSTRACT Feeding Soy Protein Isolate and/or Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on the Spleen-Liver Axis in a Female Rat Model of Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease with Liver Steatosis Lauren Brooke Gibson Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is a congenital hepatorenal fibrocystic syndrome with a mortality rate of 30% during the first year of life. The most common extra-renal manifestation of ARPKD is liver disease with a greater rate in females due to their higher estrogen levels. Abnormal spleen enlargement (splenomegaly) has been found to occur in 60% of ARPKD patients. In the absence of effective medications to treat the …

Qualitatively Assessing Background Factors Of Criminal Captive-Takers, Erin E. Grinnan Jan 2016

Qualitatively Assessing Background Factors Of Criminal Captive-Takers, Erin E. Grinnan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Captive-taking is an inclusive category of criminal behavior that encompasses kidnapping, hostage situations, and certain acts of terrorism within both domestic and international contexts. To date, the existing research examining the individuals that commit captive-taking events and their backgrounds has been minimal. Gaining a deeper understanding of these individuals and their backgrounds may better prepare the individuals that are charged with intervening in captive-taking events including law enforcement, military personnel, and psychologists who assist in negotiation procedures.;This dissertation is drawn from a pilot study consisting of interviews with seven, incarcerated individuals convicted of captive-taking. The purpose of this dissertation was …

Oversized Load, Kaitlyn Noel Hunter Jan 2016

Oversized Load, Kaitlyn Noel Hunter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This paper explores the research, artwork and processes that culminated in the "Oversized Load" Master Of Fine Arts thesis exhibition. I am examining the similarities between fear and perception of fictionalized monsters and how we label each other as humans. The fundamental question being, at what point does someone become the "other"? I look at both otherness and the grotesque in the context of body image. Both ostracization and cultural stigma are initiated by social shame. I see monsters as the physical manifestation of that shame. These feelings are closely tied to socially constructed gender norms and standards of beauty. …

Bee Natural History, Diversity, And Management In West Virginia, Matthew Mckinney Jan 2016

Bee Natural History, Diversity, And Management In West Virginia, Matthew Mckinney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The value of bees as providers of pollination, an incredibly important ecosystem service, is well understood. Since the detection of colony collapse disorder, the concern over the health of both managed and naturally occurring bee populations has been in the limelight, sometimes being discussed nearly as much in popular media as it is in scientific research. While an ideal situation may be the complete recovery of Apis mellifera populations, the causes of colony losses are not fully understood. Therefore, we must also consider our alternative options such as managing areas to better support natural bees and utilizing alternative managed species, …

Motive Taxonomic And Sex Considerations Of Murder-Suicide, Matthew R. Mcnally Jan 2016

Motive Taxonomic And Sex Considerations Of Murder-Suicide, Matthew R. Mcnally

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using data obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), the present study examines two emerging topics in the field of murder-suicide research. The majority of murder-suicide perpetrators are male, so female perpetrators are rarely studied. First, the current study uses the largest known sample of female murder-suicide perpetrators to explore murder-suicide differences by sex. Second, motives from the recently-proposed perversion of virtue theory of murder-suicide are operationalized with input from the theory developer and analyzed. The perversion of virtue theory is compared to the predominant murder-suicide motive typology to evaluate whether …

Effects Of Pristine And Nitrogen-Doped Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Human Lung Epithelial And Fibroblast Cells, Amy Mihalchik Jan 2016

Effects Of Pristine And Nitrogen-Doped Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Human Lung Epithelial And Fibroblast Cells, Amy Mihalchik

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) were first described by Iijima in 1991 as "needle-like tubes" made up of concentric sheets of graphene lattice composed of hexagonal carbon units. MWCNT have been reported to be extremely strong, light-weight, and durable, thus making them a highly valued nanomaterial commercially. In order to improve their electrical conductivity and dispersibility for industrial and biomedical uses, materials scientists began functionalizing CNT in the mid-1990s. One type of functionalized MWCNT, nitrogen doped-MWCNT (ND-MWCNT), have nitrogen directly incorporated into the carbon lattice, disrupting sp2 bonding and decreasing the crystallinity of MWCNT. Nitrogen-doping significantly increases the brittleness, chemical reactivity, …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Various Modalities To Improve Arterial Stiffness, Corey Moore Jan 2016

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Various Modalities To Improve Arterial Stiffness, Corey Moore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with an increase in cardiovascular (CV) mortality, partially due to arterial stiffening, which can be measured non-invasively via pulse wave velocity (PWV). Arterial stiffness is a clinically relevant CV marker of mortality, an increase in PWV by only 1 SD is associated with an increased CV risk of 15%. Land based aerobic exercise, both chronic and acute, has previously been identified as an effective method for improving arterial health. Unfortunately, land based aerobic exercise is not feasible for all populations, therefore a more effective treatment modality must be elucidated. Aquatic exercise has previously been shown …

Developing A Smart Proxy For Fluidized Bed Using Machine Learning, Amir Ansari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using fossil fuel which has been grown dramatically during the recent century, causes an increase in greenhouse gas emission. The global warming issue pushes the engineers toward the cleaner type of energy like Hydrogen. Coal gasification is one of the cheapest methods to obtain Hydrogen. Coal gasification is a special case of more general problem called fluidized bed. In order to design and optimize a gasification process, a deep understanding of multiphase flow in a gasifier is needed. MFiX is a commercial multi-phase flow simulator which has been used to simulate the gas and solid transport and reaction in the …

Signaling Changes In Reinforcer Ratios Facilitates Adaptive Forgetting In Pigeons, Daniel Bell-Garrison Jan 2016

Signaling Changes In Reinforcer Ratios Facilitates Adaptive Forgetting In Pigeons, Daniel Bell-Garrison

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Forgetting is often characterized as maladaptive, but if a cue no longer signals the consequences of a response, then forgetting the previously learned stimulus-response discrimination is adaptive. Pigeons pecked for food in concurrent schedules of reinforcement. The relative frequency of food delivery on each key changed pseudorandomly across sessions with an overnight break in the middle of each session. New sessions began immediately after the last food delivery in the previous session. When the change from one session to the next was not signaled, responses remained under the control of the previous session's ratio of reinforcement. When the session change …

Reaction Kinetics Of Hydroxyl Radical With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Precursors, Juddha Thapa Jan 2016

Reaction Kinetics Of Hydroxyl Radical With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Precursors, Juddha Thapa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The incomplete combustion of fuels inside of an internal combustion engines generates unwanted byproducts such as soot. Because of health and environmental concerns, soot formation has been a very active area of research in combustion chemistry. However, the mechanism of formation of soot is still not well understood. It has been proposed that the soot formation is initiated by the reaction of small free radicals with abundant hydrocarbon fuel molecules producing aromatic ring structures at high temperatures. These aromatic ring structures further react to form polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are stable at the high temperatures of combustion environments. These …

Using The Instructional Beliefs Model To Examine Instructional Feedback In The Classroom, Melissa F. Tindage Jan 2016

Using The Instructional Beliefs Model To Examine Instructional Feedback In The Classroom, Melissa F. Tindage

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the role that instructional feedback plays in student engagement using Weber, Martin, and Myers's (2001) Instructional Beliefs Model (IBM). The proposed IBM for this dissertation included first-order constructs (i.e., instructional feedback, course workload, course difficulty, and students' feedback orientation), a second-order construct (i.e., feedback self-efficacy), and a third-order construct (i.e., student engagement). As hypothesized, instructional feedback (i.e., developmental, fairness) is positively associated with feedback self-efficacy, while course workload and course difficulty are negatively associated with feedback self- efficacy. However, only two dimensions of students' feedback orientation (i.e., utility, retention) were positively associated …

A Feasibility Study For The Automated Monitoring And Control Of Mine Water Discharges, Christopher R. Vass Jan 2016

A Feasibility Study For The Automated Monitoring And Control Of Mine Water Discharges, Christopher R. Vass

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The chemical treatment of mine-influenced waters is a longstanding environmental challenge for many coal operators, particularly in Central Appalachia. Mining conditions in this region present several unique obstacles to meeting NPDES effluent limits. Outlets that discharge effluent are often located in remote areas with challenging terrain where conditions do not facilitate the implementation of large-scale commercial treatment systems. Furthermore, maintenance of these systems is often laborious, expensive, and time consuming. Many large mining complexes discharge water from numerous outlets, while using environmental technicians to assess the water quality and treatment process multiple times per day. Unfortunately, this treatment method when …

Application Of Computer Vision For Roller Operation Management, Mohammad Hadi Niki Rashidi Jan 2016

Application Of Computer Vision For Roller Operation Management, Mohammad Hadi Niki Rashidi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Compaction is the last and possibly the most important phase in construction of asphalt concrete (AC) pavements. Compaction densifies the loose (AC) mat, producing a stable surface with low permeability. The process strongly affects the AC performance properties. Too much compaction may cause aggregate degradation and low air void content facilitating bleeding and rutting. On the other hand too little compaction may result in higher air void content facilitating oxidation and water permeability issues, rutting due to further densification by traffic and reduced fatigue life. Therefore, compaction is a critical issue in AC pavement construction.;The common practice for compacting a …

Enhancing The Ionic Conductivity Of Solid State Electrolytes By Oxide Glass Doping, Yue Zhou Jan 2016

Enhancing The Ionic Conductivity Of Solid State Electrolytes By Oxide Glass Doping, Yue Zhou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the increasing use of lithium ion secondary batteries in practical application, solid state electrolyte attracted lots of attention since it's a crucial part for the lithium ion secondary batteries. Compare with liquid electrolyte, the advantage of solid state electrolyte covering no electron leakage, safety, chemical and thermal stability, high energy density and so on. However, one disadvantage of inorganic solid state electrolyte is the low ionic conductivity which is primarily due to its low grain boundary conductivity. Among all of the solid state electrolyte candidates for lithium battery applications, the perovskite structure lanthanum lithium titanate (La2/3-x □1/3-2xLi3xTiO3) has the …

Multi-Modality Human Action Recognition, Yu Zhu Jan 2016

Multi-Modality Human Action Recognition, Yu Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Human action recognition is very useful in many applications in various areas, e.g. video surveillance, HCI (Human computer interaction), video retrieval, gaming and security. Recently, human action recognition becomes an active research topic in computer vision and pattern recognition. A number of action recognition approaches have been proposed. However, most of the approaches are designed on the RGB images sequences, where the action data was collected by RGB/intensity camera. Thus the recognition performance is usually related to various occlusion, background, and lighting conditions of the image sequences. If more information can be provided along with the image sequences, more data …

Dominant Controls On Organic-Rich Shale Deposition: Geochemical Evidences From The Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Ruiqian Chen Jan 2016

Dominant Controls On Organic-Rich Shale Deposition: Geochemical Evidences From The Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Ruiqian Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation presents new results of the linkages between primary productivity, bottom water redox conditions and clastic input associated with the Acadian orogeny of the Marcellus Shale.;Chapter 1 compares the isotopic and geochemical characteristics of sediments of a liquids-prone well (WV-7) in Wetzel County with a gas-prone well (WV-6) in Monongalia County, northern West Virginia. The difference in organic carbon isotopes indicates that the dominant organic matter preserved in each core is different: delta13Corg values are lighter on average in WV-6 compared with WV-7. A possible explanation is that a larger fraction of terrestrial organic matter was preserved in the …

Bound Together: Slavery And Democracy In Antebellum Northwestern Virginia, 1815--1865, Adam Zucconi Jan 2016

Bound Together: Slavery And Democracy In Antebellum Northwestern Virginia, 1815--1865, Adam Zucconi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since West Virginia's founding in 1863, historians have attempted to understand the forces that shaped the state's creation. Most historians have argued that the Mountain State's admission into the Union represented a grassroots rebellion among democratically-minded mountaineers who had long resisted the rule of eastern slaveholding aristocrats. The tumultuous events triggered by secession and civil war provided the opportunity for westerners to inaugurate their long desired wishes to free themselves from their allegedly tyrannical brethren and abolish the institution that many residents blamed for their woes: chattel slavery.;West Virginia's founding proved more contingent and complex than previously argued. During the …

Examining Whether Time Orientation Mediates Or Moderates Age Effects On Goal Selection And Pursuit, Amy M. Knepple Carney Jan 2016

Examining Whether Time Orientation Mediates Or Moderates Age Effects On Goal Selection And Pursuit, Amy M. Knepple Carney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Future time perspective has been studied in a number of domains and shown to influence the associations among age and a range of personal, health and social goals (Carstensen et al., 1999; Cate & John, 2007; Nurmi, 1992; Stahl & Patrick, 2012). However, the past and present also matter. It is likely that future goals are affected by our present feelings or behaviors (Lewin, 1939), as well as by our future orientation. What is not clear, however, is whether and in what ways past and present orientation relate to current goals and age. The aim of the current study was …

Designing A Valid And Reliable Instrument To Measure Teachers' Use And Perceptions Of Initiatives That Address The Low Socioeconomic Achievement Gap In West Virginia Title I Schools, Rosemary Beatrice Coyle Anderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Initiatives that research tells us should be increasing achievement for poor children have not succeeded in reducing the achievement gap for the low socioeconomic subset in the United States and in West Virginia schools (Reardon, 2011; WVDE, 2009). This study developed a valid and reliable instrument to examine teachers' perceptions of the use of 16 research based initiatives that have been directed to improving the achievement gap of poor children. The research question was: What are the psychometric properties of a survey instrument that is designed to assess teachers' perceptions of the uses and effectiveness of reform initiatives that have …

Paradoxical Roles Of Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapeutics And Carcinogenesis, Emily Despeaux Jan 2016

Paradoxical Roles Of Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapeutics And Carcinogenesis, Emily Despeaux

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nanoparticles (NPs) are becoming increasingly common in consumer goods and are under investigation for a variety of industrial and biomedical applications. However, challenges in determining NP toxicity may prevent them from reaching their full potential. NPs cannot be treated as single class for toxicity evaluations. Even among particles made from the same material, particle-specific physical properties, including size, shape, surface charge, agglomeration state, and surface modifications have a strong effect on the toxicity. Even so, the obstacles to conclusively and reproducibly evaluating toxicity span all NP classes. NP literature is riddled with confusing and often contradictory reports regarding the biocompatibility …

The Role Of Debt And Dependency In Shaping West Virginia's Political Economy, 1820-1920, Chad R. Holmes Jan 2016

The Role Of Debt And Dependency In Shaping West Virginia's Political Economy, 1820-1920, Chad R. Holmes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis evaluates how West Virginia's perceptions of debt and dependency were formed and contributed to the state's political economy throughout the nineteenth century. As a part of the Virginia Commonwealth, western Virginians used antebellum political debates to independently control regional resources and seize the political prestige of connecting the nation's east to the nation's west. When eastern Virginians seceded from the Union in 1861, western Virginians saw an opportunity to claim their independence. Secessionist and unionist support provided the political chaos necessary for western Virginians to declare their independence. Political uprisings sprouted up throughout western Virginia. Northwestern Virginia's pro-Union …

Determining The Angle Of Impact From The Analysis Of Bullets Following Perforation With Glass, Roger L. Jeffreys Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When two objects come into contact with one another, there is a potential for the transfer of material between those objects. The goal of this research was to develop statistical models to aid investigators in the reconstruction of a shooting incident. Specifically, the determination of the direction of fire from the angle of impact of the bullet was addressed by assessing the deformation of the bullet and the transfer of glass onto the bullet. Transfer of material to bullets is an underexploited area of trace evidence. Current research has mainly been observational and no attempt has been made to provide …

Modeling Of Magnetoelectric Composite Structures, Tomas Ignacio Muchenik Cena Jan 2016

Modeling Of Magnetoelectric Composite Structures, Tomas Ignacio Muchenik Cena

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Novel models to predict magnetoelectric (ME) properties of composites made of piezoelectric (PE) and piezomagnetic (PM) phases is proposed. Two different composite arrangements are used: laminate and particulate. ME properties for laminate arrangement are obtained by applying the multiphysics equations for all four possible laminate configurations (TT, LT, TL, and LL), with appropriate boundary conditions. Closed form, explicit formulas are derived for the calculation of the ME charge and voltage coefficients as a function of material properties of both phases and PM volume fraction. A new coefficient, the ME coupling factor, is proposed in order to assess the conversion of …

The interview questions were designed to touch on each stage of Tinto's theory of Individual departure in order …

Effects Of Executive Functioning On False Memory In Children, Pamela Swift Tessier Jan 2016

Effects Of Executive Functioning On False Memory In Children, Pamela Swift Tessier

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Misremembering is a common phenomenon in normal human development that has great potential to become problematic, especially in legal situations. The Deese/Roediger--McDermott (DRM; Deese, 1959; Roediger & McDermott, 1995) model has been commonly used in the literature to uncover mechanisms for why these false memories may occur. Children have only recently begun to be investigated using this paradigm. Some related mechanisms in children for false recollection that have yet to be investigated are child executive functioning and socioeconomic status. In the current study, executive functioning was investigated as a potential mechanism for false recollections using a DRM paradigm. Children completed …

Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu Jan 2016

Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Volcanic eruptions have influenced regional and global climate on annual, interannual, decadal, and multi-decadal time scales. However, past studies have largely focused on the response of global temperature to modern eruptions with the aid of satellite records. This approach limits the number of eruptions that can be studied and restricts our knowledge to relatively small events when compared to the volcanic history of the late Holocene. I used modern climate records to evaluate the effect of recent eruptions on Mongolian climate. I then extended my analysis to the last 2500 years by examining existing and new tree-ring data from Mongolia …

Beyond The What And How: Why Parents Want To Know About Their Adolescents' Lives., Elizabeth Yale Babskie Jan 2016

Beyond The What And How: Why Parents Want To Know About Their Adolescents' Lives., Elizabeth Yale Babskie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As adolescents spend more time away from home and increasingly engage in unsupervised activities, parents are challenged with allowing their children more responsibility while still promoting positive youth development (Smetana, Campione-Barr, & Metzger, 2006). Extant research shows that parents continue to play an important roll in facilitating positive adolescent development through their knowledge of what their adolescent children are doing and whom they are with when away from home or school (Racz & McMahon, 2011). Recent research has focused on understanding the sources of parents’ knowledge and has identified both parentdriven (rules, solicitation, indirect, covert) and adolescent-driven (disclosure, secrecy, concealment) …
