The Effects Of Overprotective Parenting On Academic Self-Esteem: The Moderating Role Of Teachers, Brittany R. Valdez Jan 2016

The Effects Of Overprotective Parenting On Academic Self-Esteem: The Moderating Role Of Teachers, Brittany R. Valdez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Overprotective parenting, or "helicopter parenting" as it is known in the media, is characterized by high levels of behavioral and psychological control, and has been found by previous empirical studies to be linked to several maladaptive child outcomes (Wood, McLeod, Sigman, Hwang, & Chu, 2003). These outcomes include increased levels of anxiety, depression (Bayer, Sanson, & Hemphill, 2006; LeMoyne & Buchanan, 2011; Schiffrin, Liss, Miles-McLean, Geary, & Erchull 2013), and shyness (Bayer, et al., 2006; Rubin, Coplan, & Bowker, 2009) as well as decreased academic outcomes (Bernstein & Triger, 2010; Padilla-Walker & Nelson, 2012). However, much of the research regarding …

The Effectiveness Of Diabetic Shared Medical Appointments To Improve Access And Outcomes, Amanda P. Wakim Jan 2016

The Effectiveness Of Diabetic Shared Medical Appointments To Improve Access And Outcomes, Amanda P. Wakim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diabetes in Appalachia is a health problem with escalating incidence and cost. The increased aging population and inadequate healthy life choices are main contributors to the diabetes epidemic. As the incidence of diabetes increases, the current one-to-one, patient-to-provider health care delivery system is insufficient to meet the needs of persons with diabetes. Furthermore, as the prevalence of diabetes increases, the access to endocrinologists in northern West Virginia becomes more limited. Increased incidence and decreased access results in poor health outcomes, increased medical costs, and patient and provider dissatisfaction with the health care system. The shared medical appointment (SMA) is an …

Perceptions Of The Bereaved: Attributions, Emotions, And Prosocial Behavior, Christine Weir Jan 2016

Perceptions Of The Bereaved: Attributions, Emotions, And Prosocial Behavior, Christine Weir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explored a new application of Weiner's Attributional Model to suicide bereavement, and how friends and coworkers respond in their emotions and prosocial behavior. This is a comprehensive theoretical model addressing how people respond to negative events occurring in the lives of others. Its premise is the influence of attributions on the behavior, affect, and cognitive processes of the helper. The model's broad underpinnings are that attributions for challenging behavior can in turn produce a crucial effect on helping behavior. Previous qualitative research on suicide survivors has suggested that attitudes and beliefs towards suicide survivors by those in the …

The Role Of West Virginia University In The Economic Development Of West Virginia: A General Equilibrium Approach, Priyanjali Sinha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Universities, industries and government are major institutions and play an important role in local economic growth and development. They often work collectively in achieving these goals. While the role of institutions in economic development is well-founded in the literature, a university's strategic role as an institution to encourage local area development is only now being recognized. The existing literature recognizes the spillover effect of mainly university research on local industrial productivity and innovations at the national level. The impact of various university activities on numerous other local economic development indicators like per capita income, poverty, school enrollments etc., at county …

Errant Romanticism: Queering Gender And Sexuality In British Literature, 1790-1840, Teresa M. Pershing

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Error is both a purposeless wandering and a purposeful identification of a mistake. Each chapter analyzes texts from the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries which feature female characters and the epilogue turns to the autobiographical writing of a man in the 21st-century. Chapters on William Godwin's memoirs of Mary Wollstonecraft, Amelia Alderson Opie's Dangers of Coquetry , Anne Plumptre's Something New, Harriet Martineau's Illustrations of Political Economy, and Thomas Beatie's autography Labor of Love feature characters---both real and fictional--- who destabilize what Bourdieu calls "collective[ly] misrecogn[ized]" understandings of identity as truth/error and "either/or." Utilizing notions of error developed by Zachary Sng …

The Depositional And Diagenetic History Of The Permian Quartermaster Group Of Western Kansas, Joseph James Pritt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Permo-Triassic red beds and evaporites can be found in a variety of locations around the world. Largely deposited once the supercontinent Pangea formed, many of these units have historically been interpreted as marine to marginal marine deposits due to their association with evaporites. Evaporites, however, can also form in continental settings. Recent studies of red beds and evaporites within the Leonardian-Guadalupian Nippewalla Group of Kansas suggest some red beds and evaporites were deposited in acid saline lakes and associated environments. The middle to late Permian Quartermaster Group, which overlies the Nippewalla Group, has not been as extensively studied. The main …

Nondestructive Methods To Characterize Rock Mechanical Properties At Low-Temperature: Applications For Asteroid Capture Technologies, Kara A. Savage

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent government initiatives and commercial activities have targeted asteroids for in situ material characterization, manipulation, and possible resource extraction. Most of these activities and missions have proposed significant robotic components, given the risks and costs associated with manned missions. To successfully execute these robotic activities, detailed mechanical characteristics of the target space bodies must be known prior to contact, in order to appropriately plan and direct the autonomous robotic protocols. Unfortunately, current estimates of asteroid mechanical properties are based on limited direct information, and significant uncertainty remains specifically concerning internal structures, strengths, and elastic properties of asteroids. One proposed method …

Did The Late Paleozoic Ice Age Cause Reduced Evolutionary Rates In Marine Invertebrates? : A Test Using The Crinoid Fossil Record, Daniel C. Segessenman Jan 2016

Did The Late Paleozoic Ice Age Cause Reduced Evolutionary Rates In Marine Invertebrates? : A Test Using The Crinoid Fossil Record, Daniel C. Segessenman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A 2003 paper by Stanley and Powell reported depressed rates of origination and extinction in marine invertebrates during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) as compared to background rates during the Paleozoic. In their paper, trilobites were used as a specific example to support the hypothesis of sluggish evolutionary rates. Thus, can their hypothesis be tested using a different fossil group? Using an updated version of the crinoid database from Sepkoski's 2002 compendium of fossil marine genera, adding data from multiple sources, rates of origination, extinction, and genus duration were calculated at the stage level for the interval from the …

Combinatorial Real-Time High Throughput Analyses Of Cell Behavior Upon Exposure To Analytes, Reem Eldawud

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The majority of current techniques to assess the toxicity of analytes (i.e., nanomaterials, drugs and toxins) in vitro rely on the application of affinity or catalytic recognition elements (i.e., biosensors), their activity, sensitivity and selectivity, as well as the processing power of micro- and opto-detection devices. For instance, water-soluble tetrazolium (WST-1) assay is among the most common techniques used to measure the viability of cells following exposure. Specifically, in this assay a catalytic biosensor (tetrazolium salt) is reduced by cellular NAD(P)H-dependent oxidoreductase or mitochondrial dehydrogenases resulting in colorimetric changes quantified using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (detection element). Similarly, imaging of cellular …

Does Mindfulness Reduce Attentional Negativity Bias And Depressive Symptoms?, Cameron Ford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mindfulness has been associated with several psychological benefits such as reduced symptoms of depression (Brown, Ryan, & Creswell, 2007). However, the mechanism(s) by which mindfulness reduces depressive symptoms is unclear. The present research investigated one potential mechanism: attentional negativity bias. In two studies utilizing eye-tracking methodology, gaze patterns served as indicators of visual attention in order to examine the relations among attention, depressive symptoms, and mindfulness. In Study 1, there was some limited evidence that trait mindfulness was related to less attentional negativity bias. Specifically, trait mindfulness was related to more fixation duration and more fixations on positive images. However, …

Voluntary Wheel Running Improves Recovery From Muscle Disuse In Mice, Matthew J. Brooks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The reloading of atrophied muscles from weightlessness or disuse results in injury and prolonged recovery. Satellite cells, or muscle stem cells, have a key role in facilitating injury-induced muscle repair but have not been shown to be required in muscle remodeling following atrophy. However, it has been less clear if low-impact exercise, such as voluntary wheel running, could provide a sufficient stimulus to enhance muscle recovery from atrophy through satellite cell activation. This study aimed to determine if voluntary wheel running improved recovery from muscle disuse following hindlimb suspension unloading (HSU), and if the recovery was associated with exercise-induced satellite …

The Relationship Between Plasma Osmolarity And Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle And Effect Of Feeding Cows Medicated Feed Through Mineral Containing Altosidrtm Igr On The Growth Of Beef Calves, Taylor Diane Harrison

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dietary cation-anion modification in cattle has effects on productivity through various means. Alterations of dietary cation-anion balances has been shown to affect plasma osmolarity. Plasma osmolarity is directly related to renal function and metabolism in all animals. In a feeding operation with a single diet fed to a similar population of animals, plasma osmolarity should fall within a somewhat normal range (approximately 270-310 mOsm). However, subtle, yet very distinguishable differences will exist between animals. In theory, variances in osmolarity may reflect differences in metabolism and as such, efficiency of feed utilization. Many researchers believe that utilizing residual feed intake (RFI) …
