Stochastic Geometry Analysis Of A Class Of Cooperative Relaying Protocols, Sri Lakshmi Phani Balineni
Stochastic Geometry Analysis Of A Class Of Cooperative Relaying Protocols, Sri Lakshmi Phani Balineni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines wireless relay networks that use hybrid-ARQ protocols. Relays networks efficiently combat fading and exploit the spatial diversity present in the channel. Hybrid-ARQ involves retransmitting the signal if it is not decoded correctly. In conventional HARQ, the retransmission comes from the source, but in cooperative HARQ the retransmission could come from a relay that has successfully decoded the message, thus attaining transmit diversity.;A Markov chain model is conceived and used to compute the effective throughput and outage probability in the presence of Rayleigh fading. The analytical results are validated with simulations. The spatial configuration of the network plays …
Metaphors Of Reading: Cognition And Embodiment In Contemporary Metafiction, Amanda L. Bailey
Metaphors Of Reading: Cognition And Embodiment In Contemporary Metafiction, Amanda L. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project brings together methodologies from sensory and cognitive approaches to literature to posit that Conceptual Metaphors of Readings mediate the experience of readers with fiction and provide an organizing framework for scholars and readers alike to consider the diverse sensory and cognitive phenomena that are used to describe the experience of reading. These conceptual metaphors are culturally and historically developed and can be used in combination with each other by authors to achieve desired effects on readers; however, there are clear patterns in metaphor blends. I demonstrate the robustness of this framework by analyzing metafictional readers, scenes of reading, …
Diffusion Or Dissent: Examining International Family Planning Frames And Domestic Policy Divergence, Gillian C. Beach
Diffusion Or Dissent: Examining International Family Planning Frames And Domestic Policy Divergence, Gillian C. Beach
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores how issue framing within an international advocacy movement influences and is influenced by the framing of the same issue within politically differentiated regimes, and examines this question through an analysis of the international family planning movement. Existing work on both policy diffusion and international advocacy presents strong evidence that the international community has a powerful effect on the framing and development of domestic policy. However, there is room for refinement of the literature in addressing how international actors affect policy trajectories within dissenting regimes---that is, regimes that espouse explicitly anti-Western ideologies, but which are nevertheless active in …
Exploring Staff Turnover In A Large-Scale Ebt Implementation Initiative, Laurel A. Brabson
Exploring Staff Turnover In A Large-Scale Ebt Implementation Initiative, Laurel A. Brabson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Staff turnover in the behavioral health field is a substantial and chronic problem with implications for both agencies and clients (Ben-Dror, 1994). Increased focus on the implementation of evidence-based treatments (EBT) has further highlighted the problems associated with turnover, as EBT trainings are particularly costly and time-consuming for clinicians and their agencies (Cook, Biyanova, & Coyne, 2009). The current study examined rates and predictors of turnover within an EBT implementation initiative designed to assess the effectiveness of three different training models. Data was collected from 110 families, 100 clinicians, 50 supervisors, and 50 administrators involved in the state-wide implementation of …
The Costume Design Process For "Courtship" And "Valentine's Day", Lauren E. Brennan
The Costume Design Process For "Courtship" And "Valentine's Day", Lauren E. Brennan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Courtship and Valentine's Day are the last two installments in a trilogy of one act plays by Horton Foote. The plays depict the everyday life of a family between the years of 1915 and 1917 in Harrison, Texas. Both Courtship and Valentine's Day are examples of "slice of life" realism. However, this slice of life is from a vantage point, as Horton Foote "wrote about [the] period, but not from [the] period" (McGonigle, Initial Design Meeting).;Above all else, the Director stressed that the purpose of both plays should be to support the journey towards finding and defining home. In an …
Players' Responses To And Primary Caregivers' Perceptions Of Authoritarian And Authoritative Coaching In The Inner-City, Renee Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An abundance of research in sport-based positive youth development (PYD) indicates that coaches should be positive, promote autonomy-supportive and authoritative coaching styles, and caution the use of authoritarian leadership, while too often ignoring elements of authoritarian leadership such as discipline and structure. However, most of the studies conducted targeted middle-upper socioeconomic status (SES) suburban, White populations, with little emphasis on the inner-city underserved context. Parenting and teaching literature provides strong support for authoritarian styles in the underserved setting (Hartman & Manfa, 2015; Smetana, 2011). Similarly, the few studies conducted in the underserved sport settings show support of authoritarian styles (Brown …
Post-Conflict Occupations: A New Analysis Using Comparisons Of Contextual, Hybrid And Instigated Factors In Germany, Japan And Iraq, L. Amber Brugnoli
Post-Conflict Occupations: A New Analysis Using Comparisons Of Contextual, Hybrid And Instigated Factors In Germany, Japan And Iraq, L. Amber Brugnoli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research asserts that the failures in reconstructing Iraq resulted from poor decision-making and policy implementation in 2003 by comparing those efforts to the successful rebuilding of Germany and Japan, post-World War II. The focus is on actions taken by the occupying force---the United States---within the first 12 months of the operation, with a five-year post-conflict examination to determine the result of those actions. While comparisons between Iraq and Germany or Iraq and Japan have been completed previously, they are often with the intent of proving why the reconstruction of Iraq did not succeed by highlighting the differences between the …

Temperature-Dependent Selenium Sorption To Mine Drainage Solids: Implication For Diel Cycling, Rebecca K. Mcgrail
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Aqueous diel cycles have been observed for a variety of elements and have recently been observed for selenium (Se). Elevated concentrations of Se have been linked to adverse biological impacts on a variety of species from fish to humans. The objective of this work was to determine the role of temperature on selenite (Se(IV)) sorption, a possible mechanism for Se diel cycles. Four solids were selected as sorbents: gray and brown overburden material from the southern West Virginia coal fields and active and passive mine drainage treatment solids. Sorption isotherms were conducted at 20 °C for all solids and at …

Role Of Perivascular Adipose Tissue In Vascular Pathology And The Therapeutic Effect Of Exercise, Evan Ray Devallance
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Aortic compliance is important for dampening pulsatile flow and delivery of continuous flow to the periphery. Aortic compliance is regulated by extracellular matrix composition and endothelial derived nitric oxide. Disruption of aortic endothelium or extracellular matrix can lead to the development of aortic stiffness an independent risk factor of cardiac events and mortality. Over the past decade perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) surrounding the vasculature has come to light as an important regulator of artery function. The main focus of this dissertation is to evaluate the role PVAT surrounding the aorta in mediating endothelial relaxation in health and disease. Specifically, metabolic …
Financial Decision Making, Price, And Consumer Financial Well-Being: A Multiple Methodology Inquiry Of The Cognitions, Emotional Coping Responses, And Brand Measures In The Healthcare Service Industry, Joshua D. Dorsey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Article 1: Financial bankruptcy, particularly those as a result of healthcare expenses, has become a pervasive issue in the United States. This article examines a basic premise for the research, that healthcare is not viewed, by consumers, consistently with other exchanges, leading to detachment and disengagement within the purchase experience (e.g., a lack of price searching and price comparison behaviors) and disadvantageous consequences for financial well-being. Subsequently, the studies test cognitive (i.e., knowledge structures) and emotional constructs (i.e., emotion regulation), with a between-subjects experimental methodology (three studies), that may further unfurl the decision process for healthcare consumers. Contributions to the …
Analysis Of Model-Aided Navigation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Stephane D'Urso
Analysis Of Model-Aided Navigation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Stephane D'Urso
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To overcome the rapid and unbounded error growth of low-cost Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), aircraft localization methods commonly compensate for Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor errors by integrating them with Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements via a Kalman Filter. However, over the past decade, the potential of GPS jamming or even spoofing GPS signals has forced the research community to focus on the development of GPS-denied navigation technologies. Among the GPS-denied techniques, one approach that has been considered is the use of a Vehicle Dynamic Models (VDM) to reduce the rate at which an INS becomes unusable. As such, this …
Effects Of Differential Drl Exposure On Interval Timing: Information Vs. Inhibition, Matthew L. Eckard
Effects Of Differential Drl Exposure On Interval Timing: Information Vs. Inhibition, Matthew L. Eckard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent investigations focusing on interventions to improve self-controlled choice have centered upon timing processes. However, speculation still remains regarding the mechanism of these interventions. To investigate how these interventions have their effects, timing in mice was assessed using an 18-s peak procedure (18-s FI trials; 54-s peak trials). During an intervention phase, mice in three treatment groups experienced differential reinforcement of low rate (DRL) schedules of reinforcement. A control group received continued exposure to the peak procedure. After 36 DRL sessions, timing was reassessed in the peak procedure. In contrast to previous reports, the DRL intervention resulted in less precise …

Evaluation Of Ultrasonic Velocity Tests To Characterize Extraterrestrial Rock Masses, Thomas W. Edge Ii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis investigates the use of ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests for extraterrestrial rock characterization by evaluating the effects of physical sample properties on the signal attenuation of ultrasonic waves. An initial review of standard laboratory UPV testing methods and expected space conditions isolated four key disparities between the two testing environments: (1) sample dimensions, (2) regolith cover, (3) sample surface roughness, and (4) utility of a gel couplant. Laboratory tests were then performed to assess the influence of these parameters in simulated space conditions, using concrete beams to simulate large sample sizes, and ground limestone to simulate regolith cover. …

Development And Validation Of An Oral Health Values Scale, Cierra B. Edwards
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Oral health values, the degree to which one demonstrates investment in improving or maintaining one's dental status, are believed to vary across individuals. Oral health values may contribute to dental treatment utilization. By assessing differences in oral health values, researchers may be better able to explain differences in dental care treatment-seeking patterns. There is limited research, however, on measuring and evaluating oral health values. This study developed and validated a new Oral Health Values Scale (OHVS) that may be used in future research efforts to understand psychosocial barriers to treatment. The study provided evidence of content validity by having experts …

An Examination Of The Consultation Component Of A Training Protocol For Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Carrie B. Jackson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is a growing need to train clinicians in evidence-based treatments (EBTs) to increase the accessibility of research-informed treatments in community settings (Herschell, Kolko, Baumann, & Davis, 2010). Multi-component trainings, which commonly include ongoing support, are more effective than one-day workshops, reading treatment manuals, and other brief training methods. The present study examines the effectiveness of one form of ongoing support, consultation, as part of a multi-component training protocol. Thirty-two community-based clinicians were trained in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) as part of a statewide implementation effort, and data were collected on several training (e.g., knowledge) and implementation (e.g., acceptability) outcomes …
Secondary Voltage Control Using Singular Value Decomposition By Discovering Community Structures In Power Networks, Talha Iqbal
Secondary Voltage Control Using Singular Value Decomposition By Discovering Community Structures In Power Networks, Talha Iqbal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Voltage and Frequency control are the two fundamental control problems in power systems. Unlike frequency control, voltage control is complicated by the fact that reactive power can't travel far distances from its source of generation. Due to this distributed nature of reactive power, voltage control is usually performed in decentralized manner. Typically, voltage control problem is divided into a three-level hierarchical structure namely primary, secondary and tertiary voltage control.;The aim of this thesis is to present an optimal secondary voltage control by decomposing a large power system into small subsystems called voltage control areas (VCAs) using the fast community detection …

Dual Targeting Of The Mesenchymal And Amoeboid Pathways: A Viable Therapy Against Metastatic Breast Cancer, Brandon C. Jones
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metastasis from the primary tumor site is the major cause of death in breast cancer, and acquisition of migration capacity is a key element for successful metastasis. Recently, it was found that expression of NEDD9, a focal adhesion associated scaffolding protein, could be used to switch between two types of single cell movement known as mesenchymal and amoeboid. Control of this "switch" can potentially open up new avenues of treatment against cancer metastasis. Simultaneous inhibition of both types of single cell movement may prevent cancer migration, thus decreasing cancer spreading and increasing survival of cancer patients. For example, forcibly pushing …

A Study Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Materials At High Temperature Using An Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope, Mahfuzur Rahman Jony
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising energy conversion devices, but their economic viability depends on long term stability of the SOFC materials at the high operating temperatures. The in-situ study of materials degradation faces a great challenge because of the unavailability of analytical methods at those high temperatures. The traditional analytical techniques for degradation measurements are widely based on post-mortem studies. The cells or cell materials are cooled down to room temperature and are then subjected to microscopy-based methods. Combining post-mortem analyses with cell modelling, several studies have reported the following microstructural degradations: (a) Lanthanum Strontium Manganite (LSM) particles, …

Growth Of Niobium Dioxide Thin Films And Their Metal-To-Insulator Transitions Induced By Electric Field, Toyanath Joshi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The 4d transition metal oxide, NbO2, is a key material for a wide range of potential applications. It exhibits a thermally driven metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) with very high transition temperature (TMIT = 1083 K). High TMIT, electric field induced sharp threshold switching and current-controlled negative differential resistance (NDR) characteristics makes this material most suitable for current switching devices. Metal-to-insulator transition in NbO2 is accompanied by a structural transition from a rutile (high temperature) to a tetragonal (low temperature) structure with lowering temperature. In this work, pulsed laser deposition growth of NbO2 thin films and their structural and electrical characterization were …
