A Data-Driven Smart Proxy Model For A Comprehensive Reservoir Simulation, Faisal Alenezi
A Data-Driven Smart Proxy Model For A Comprehensive Reservoir Simulation, Faisal Alenezi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The preferred common tool to estimate the performance of oil and gas fields under different production scenarios is numerical reservoir simulation. A comprehensive numerical reservoir model has tens of millions of grid blocks. The massive potential of existing numerical reservoir simulation models have gone unrealized because they are computationally expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, an effective alternative tool is required for fast and reliable decision making. To reduce the required computational time, proxy models have been developed. Traditional proxy models are either statistical or reduced-order models (ROM). They were developed to substitute complex numerical simulation with producing a representation of the …

Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan
Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the effect of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) on peripheral microvessel function in healthy and metabolic syndrome (MetS) rodents, and whether exercise training could prevent the vascular dysfunction associated with UCMS. Our initial hypothesis was that: 1) LZRs exposed to UCMS would have peripheral microvascular dysfunction similar to that evident in the OZRs controls due to a reduction in NO bioavailability and an increase in ROS production; 2) the comorbidity between MetS exposed to UCMS will exacerbate the already existing peripheral microvascular dysfunction; 3) exercise could limit the peripheral microvascular dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress and …
Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich
Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Demand for animal proteins is increasing worldwide, spurring an increase in forage based agricultural production. Forage based agriculture utilizes grass and legume crops from areas which are not suited for row-crop production to feed ruminant animals. These systems provide increased animal proteins to consumer markets, while using minimal amounts of cereal crops that would otherwise be used for human consumption. However, forage based agriculture does not come without a risk of environmental degradation. The US EPA determined that agriculture non-point source (NPS) pollution is among the top three causes of phosphorus (P) related surface water impairment and accounts for an …
Baltimore City Reservoir Watershed Forests Deer Exclosure Study: Deer Impact In An Even-Aged, Second Growth, Hardwood Forest Over A Ten Year Period, Walter Buck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have the potential to change forest community dynamics by affecting the persistence of individual tree species and altering overstory composition. We evaluated the Baltimore City Reservoir Watershed Forests Deer Exclosure Study for a better understanding of the effects of over-browsing in this hardwood forest. The study examined the effects of deer browsing over a ten year period, using 20 fenced deer exclosure plots (8x8 feet), paired with unfenced reference control plots. Tree seedling and sapling abundance was compared between the fenced deer exclosure plots and the unfenced control plots over the ten year period. Total tree …
Point Cloud Processing Algorithms For Environment Understanding In Intelligent Vehicle Applications, Ahmed Cheikh Sidiya
Point Cloud Processing Algorithms For Environment Understanding In Intelligent Vehicle Applications, Ahmed Cheikh Sidiya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding the surrounding environment including both still and moving objects is crucial to the design and optimization of intelligent vehicles. In particular, acquiring the knowledge about the vehicle environment could facilitate reliable detection of moving objects for the purpose of avoiding collisions. In this thesis, we focus on developing point cloud processing algorithms to support intelligent vehicle applications. The contributions of this thesis are three-fold.;First, inspired by the analogy between point cloud and video data, we propose to formulate a problem of reconstructing the vehicle environment (e.g., terrains and buildings) from a sequence of point cloud sets. Built upon existing …
Analysis Tools For Small And Big Data Problems, Juan Chen
Analysis Tools For Small And Big Data Problems, Juan Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The dissertation focuses on two separate problems. Each is informed by real-world applications. The first problem involves the assessment of an ordinal measurement system in a manufacturing setting. A random-effects model is proposed that is applicable to this repeatability and reproducibility context, and a Bayesian framework is adopted to facilitate inference. This first problem is an example of an analysis tool to solve a small data problem.;The second problem involves statistical machine learning applied to big data problems. As more and more data become available, a need increases to automate the ability to identify particularly relevant features in a prediction …
Impact Of Incident Cancer On Coronary Artery Disease-Related Concomitant Medication Adherence, Short-Term Health And Economic Outcomes Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries With Coronary Artery Diseas, Ishveen Kaur Chopra
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most burdensome chronic conditions in the elderly. The two key goals of long-term management of CAD are (i) to reduce symptoms and ischemia and (ii) prevent myocardial infarction and death, by lowering lipids and blood pressure. Of all the risk reduction strategies, use and adherence to concomitant pharmacotherapy with statins and beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have been shown to be highly effective and has become the cornerstone of CAD management. However, adherence to concomitant pharmacotherapy can be influenced by many factors including the development of …

Diversity And Function Of Fungi Associated With The Fungivorous Millipede, Brachycybe Lecontii, Angie M. Macias
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Brachycybe (Wood) is a genus of fungivorous millipedes. To date, the fungal associates of these millipedes have never been characterized. In an attempt to resolve these relationships, culture-based approaches combined with DNA barcode sequencing were used. Sampling of 313 individuals collected from three of four B. lecontii clades and 20 sites across seven states uncovered at least 183 genera in 40 orders from four fungal phyla. At least seven putative new species were recovered in this study, despite the use of more classical culture-based approaches. Three of these fungi were phylogenetically resolved using ITS + LSU and include two new …
Hydraulic And Thermal Response To Intermittent Pumping In Unconfined Alluvial Aquifers Along A Regulated Stream, Madan Maharjan
Hydraulic And Thermal Response To Intermittent Pumping In Unconfined Alluvial Aquifers Along A Regulated Stream, Madan Maharjan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Groundwater response to stream stage fluctuations was studied using a year-long time series of stream stage and well heads in Glen Dale and New Martinsville, WV. Stream stage fluctuations exerted primary control over groundwater levels, especially during high flows. The location and operation of river pools created by dams alter groundwater flow paths and velocities. Aquifers are more prone to surface water infiltration in the upper reaches of pools than in lower reaches. Aquifer diffusivity is heterogeneous within and between the two sites.;Temperature fluctuations were observed for 2.5 years in 14 wells in three alluvial aquifers. Temperature signals have 2 …
Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond
Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My dissertation explores strategies for survival primarily related to acts of storytelling, and more specifically storytelling with the tacit agreement for measures of truth, what I refer to in my title as life-writing. The term "life-writing" refers broadly to literary and theatrical works that are connected to the lived-experience. The texts I examine, all written in the U.S. after 1990, consider the impact of traumatic and unjust pasts through sweeping, epic narratives. Each of these texts tells a separate story about injustice through stories that reveal children as victims of discursive and/or actual violence arising out of conflict between and …
Steady-State Co-Kriging Models, Sahar Hemmati
Steady-State Co-Kriging Models, Sahar Hemmati
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In deterministic computer experiments, a computer code can often be run at different levels of complexity/fidelity and a hierarchy of levels of code can be obtained. The higher the fidelity and hence the computational cost, the more accurate output data can be obtained. Methods based on the co-kriging methodology Cressie (2015) for predicting the output of a high-fidelity computer code by combining data generated to varying levels of fidelity have become popular over the last two decades. For instance, Kennedy and O'Hagan (2000) first propose to build a metamodel for multi-level computer codes by using an auto-regressive model structure. Forrester …

Violinist, composer and pedagogue, Jesus de Monasterio had a transcendent role at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where he pioneered the use of Franco-Belgian violin school techniques. He imported the academic structure of the Brussels Conservatory, where he was a student of Charles Auguste de Beriot, to the Madrid Conservatory, where he served as violin professor for more than 40 years and as director of the Conservatory for three years. Monasterio's "20 Estudios Artisticos de Concierto" (20 Concertante Artistic Studies) follows the fashion of other Franco-Belgian treatises for two violins, combining espressivo challenges in one part, and technical difficulties in the …
The Impact Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma On Primary Care And Costs Of Chronic Conditions In Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries, Rahul Garg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is an aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with a median age of diagnosis of 67 years. The intensive treatment of DLBCL can negatively influence elderly patients' preventive and chronic care, which can increase the costs of different chronic conditions. DLBCL diagnosis and treatment can affect patients' visits to their primary care providers (PCPs) and other specialists, which are important for patients' preventive screenings and chronic care. Further, having DLBCL increases the risk for breast cancer, and DLBCL treatment is associated with cardiotoxicity and increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Thus, mammography and bone mineral …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Researchers utilized a quasi-experimental design to assess outcomes associated with outdoor orientation programming. Researchers measured quantitative variables associated with sense of place and belongingness. Literature suggests a theoretical association between individuals' relationship to place and their sense of belonging to others. To test these variables researchers created a curriculum designed to facilitate sense of place for students participating in week long outdoor orientation programs. A sample (n=228) of incoming students to West Virginia University participating in outdoor orientation trips was split into an experimental group and a control group. The control group received a standardized curriculum designed to successfully transition …

Identification Of Snps Potentially Associated With Asthma Using A Di-Isocyanate Luciferase Reporter Assay, Wentao Jiang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Occupational Asthma (OA) is a common lung disorder that can be caused or aggravated by exposures and conditions in the work places. Di-isocyanate asthma (DA) is one type of OA. Despite years of research, there are no reliable markers to predict risk or susceptibility for DA. Previous studies have identified 23 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are potentially associated with genes that are related with DA. In this study, we tested the functional relevance of the 23 candidate SNPs (mostly intronic) in several DA-related genes. We hypothesized that some of these SNPs may affect the binding of relevant transcription …

Interoperability Analysis Of Non-Contact Fingerprinting Devices Vs. Contact-Based Fingerprinting Devices, Emily Biller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fingerprints are an essential biometric identifier that have been used for centuries due to the high diversity among individuals. Contactless fingerprint systems possess advantages over conventional contact-based systems, such as increased throughput in check point screening scenarios. Increased acceptance of contactless fingerprinting technologies requires careful operational validation due to the inherent differences in their capture techniques. To leverage the maturation of contactless technologies, reliability and data interoperability with legacy fingerprint datasets must be considered. The goal of this study is to evaluate the interoperability of contactless fingerprinting devices with contact-based fingerprinting devices. To achieve this goal, the fingerprint dataset of …
Study Of Parameter Estimation And Model Calibration Using Bayesian Analysis Of Noisy Data For A Virus Model, Alejandro Mejia
Study Of Parameter Estimation And Model Calibration Using Bayesian Analysis Of Noisy Data For A Virus Model, Alejandro Mejia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Numerous engineering problems are concerned with the challenge of representing real life systems through mathematical equations: modeling. Properly generated mathematical models can accurately predict the behavior of natural processes. The key objective of model development is to correctly build a set of equations or expressions that can reproduce the results observed from experimental measurements. By following this methodology, sources of error and uncertainty will arise as most natural processes have random factors that make the results stochastic, and therefore can never be exactly reproduced. A model can try to best approximate the actual outcome, but many times assumptions or simplifications …
Inhibiting The Cannabinoid Catabolic Enzyme Magl To Potentiate The Anti-Arthritic Properties Of The Synthetic Glucocorticoid Dexamethasone, Sara R. Nass
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA, Table 1) is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis, and is characterized by swelling, inflammation, pain, and destruction of the synovial joints (i.e., knees, elbows, wrists, hips, and fingers). Glucocorticoid receptor agonists are a type of steroid hormone and are among the most common treatments for inflammatory arthritis because of their powerful anti-inflammatory effects. However, harmful side effects are associated with these glucocorticoids (GCs), including increasing patients' vulnerability to infections. Cannabinoids (i.e., cannabis-like signaling molecules) exert anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects with limited side effects compared to traditional immunosuppressants making them excellent targets for the development of …

Fashioning A Soldier: Male Clothing, Union Volunteers, And The Adaptation Of A Soldierly Image, Robert W. Novak
Fashioning A Soldier: Male Clothing, Union Volunteers, And The Adaptation Of A Soldierly Image, Robert W. Novak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite hundreds of images of Union soldiers and countless accounts by veterans of their appearance during the Civil War, little is known as to how and why the soldiers looked the way they did throughout the conflict. The generalized image that emerges from the war centers around the four-button fatigue blouse prescribed in the 1861 regulations that was issued to every Union soldier at some point during the war. In understanding the origins of the fatigue blouse's design and the impact it had on the image of the ideal soldier in America through the end of the nineteenth century, greater …

A System Dynamic Transmission Model (Systrans) To Simulate Epidemic Dengue Environment, Rifat Anwar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dengue is the most significant arthropod-borne virus in terms of human morbidity and mortality. Geographic expansion of dengue and intensity of outbreak has amplified significantly during the last few decades. Thus, the understanding of the dynamic of the large outbreaks has become indispensable for planning of control interventions in future epidemics. In this regard, local entomological, meteorological and epidemiological parameters based dengue models can be an essential tool for better interpretation of dengue-climate relationship at a regional scale. Process based modelling is resourceful in combining the vector and host dynamic along with the response to the meteorological factors for dengue …

A Multidimensional Approach To Understanding Gender And Health Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Rebecca K. Delaney
A Multidimensional Approach To Understanding Gender And Health Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Rebecca K. Delaney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
"Women get sicker, men die quicker," is a statement used to describe how women suffer from more chronic health conditions, greater physical limitations, and report poorer health compared to men (Crimmins, Kim, & Sole -Auro, 2011; Lochner & Cox, 2010), whereas men have a shorter life expectancy compared to women (CDC, 2013). Although biological sex differences offer some explanation for why men and women differ in health and mortality, there is much left unexplained (Miller, 2014). Gender, a psychosocial construct that reflects attitudes, feelings, and behaviors prescribed by cultural expectations for men and women (Unger, 1979) has been highlighted as …
