Tobacco Use, Number Of Serious Smoking Cessation Attempts, And Interest In Lung Screening In A Sample Of Adult Muslims In The United States, Omar F.S. Attarabeen Jan 2018

Tobacco Use, Number Of Serious Smoking Cessation Attempts, And Interest In Lung Screening In A Sample Of Adult Muslims In The United States, Omar F.S. Attarabeen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Muslims in the United States (US) exhibit higher rates of tobacco use in comparison with rest of the US population. As a result, US Muslims might be at a higher risk for negative health consequences of tobacco use such as lung cancer. Investigating factors that are associated with tobacco use, number of smoking cessation attempts, and interest in lung screening in adult US Muslims can facilitate future efforts aimed at improving health outcomes, essentially through reducing tobacco use rates and promoting preventive lung screening in this population. Therefore, the current dissertation aimed to investigate the association of Social Cognitive Theory …

Choice Dynamics In Concurrent Ratio Schedules Of Reinforcement, Daniel Bell-Garrison Jan 2018

Choice Dynamics In Concurrent Ratio Schedules Of Reinforcement, Daniel Bell-Garrison

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Roughly 50 years of research has demonstrated that choice changes as a function of the amount of reinforcement available from two concurrently available schedules of reinforcement, and this function has been labeled the generalized matching law. The matching law, however, historically only accounts for choice between two variable-interval schedules of reinforcement. If the matching law is to be a general perspective for how organisms allocate behavior amongst several alternatives, then it ought to account for behavior when reinforcers depend on work requirements in addition to time requirements. To study these contexts, the present experiments employed concurrent ratio schedules that were …

Competitive Aggressiveness, Anger, And The Experience Of Provocation In Collegiate Athletes, Michael E. Berrebi Jan 2018

Competitive Aggressiveness, Anger, And The Experience Of Provocation In Collegiate Athletes, Michael E. Berrebi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In sport, aggressive behavior is a potentially harmful byproduct of uncontrolled anger. In addition, it is known that provocation can lead to both anger and aggressive retaliation. However, despite the potential consequences of aggressive behavior, little is known about levels of competitive anger and aggressiveness in athletes, and it is unclear if differences exist by gender or type of sport. Little research has also explored intervention approaches to help athletes better manage anger and aggression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore competitive aggressiveness, anger, and the experience of provocation among collegiate athletes. Participants were 243 male and …

Mean-Swap Variance, Portfolio Theory And Asset Pricing, Jhan Wang Jan 2018

Mean-Swap Variance, Portfolio Theory And Asset Pricing, Jhan Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary focus of this dissertation is a new risk measure, Swap Variance (SwV), and its applications to expected utility maximization, portfolio theory, and capital asset pricing models (CAPM) with loss aversion and gain preference. Superior to the classical mean-variance (MV) model, the mean-swap variance (MSwV) efficiency is consistent with expected utility maximization for all concave utility without any restriction on the form of either utility function or return distributions. Specifically, the MSwV efficiency is necessary and sufficient to the second-degree stochastic dominance (SSD). Thus, the SSD optimization can be consistently replicated by the SwV minimization for given means. The …

Experimental Analysis Of Unsteady Aerodynamic Covert Feather Behavior, Laura J. Ordaz Jan 2018

Experimental Analysis Of Unsteady Aerodynamic Covert Feather Behavior, Laura J. Ordaz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The interest in man-made flying vehicles has existed for over 100 years. Bird flight has been the major inspiration for the creation of such vehicles. More recently, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have become more popular and their use in more applications has developed the need for improved maneuverability. UAVs are also decreasing in size which has allowed them to operate within similar flight conditions as birds. Studying bird feather behavior may open doors and shed some light as to how the bird achieves such agility and control, which may then be adapted to UAV flight. In this research, the motion …

Investigation Into Composting Efforts At Wvu: A Case Study., Marina Alexis Berry Jan 2018

Investigation Into Composting Efforts At Wvu: A Case Study., Marina Alexis Berry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Institutional composting systems have been adopted by many land grant universities to help better manage their waste and protect the environment. West Virginia University (WVU) has yet to begin formally managing their animal manure and waste at the university farms. This investigation will look into what has been done at other land grant universities to see which methods could be applied at WVU. This could have environmental, economic, and social benefits and also serve as a living learning classroom. University composting systems have often started small and grown to accommodate campus food waste, which could also be a possibility for …
