Effects Of Reinforcement Rate On The Aversive Function Of Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Cory Whirtley
Effects Of Reinforcement Rate On The Aversive Function Of Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Cory Whirtley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the use of timeout from positive reinforcement is widespread and has been shown to be an effective punisher in clinical settings, the factors responsible for its effectiveness are not fully understood. The present experiment was designed to evaluate one of these factors, the reinforcement rate underway during periods of time-in. Rats’ lever pressing was maintained on variable-interval schedules of food reinforcement in a multiple schedule with two components. In one component, no timeouts were delivered. In the other component, when a variable-ratio schedule was met, lever presses were followed by a 30-s timeout during which a tone sounded, the …

An Interspecies Investigation Of Thyroid Plasma Hormone Concentrations, Histology, And Gene Expression, Emily A. Underwood
An Interspecies Investigation Of Thyroid Plasma Hormone Concentrations, Histology, And Gene Expression, Emily A. Underwood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A high prevalence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs) has raised concerns as to the health and fitness of fish and wildlife. It is not well understood to what extent existing contaminants, many with continuing inflows into the environment, may impact fish populations. This study provides an initial characterization of thyroid endocrine-related effects in two indigenous fish species sampled from Great Lakes AOCs. Biomonitoring was conducted on a pelagic, top predator species, smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) and benthic, omnivorous brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) at 7 sites in spring and fall …

Syntheses Of Azepinoindole Alkaloids Cimitrypazepine, Fargesine And Hyrtioreticulins C & D, Ganesh Ghimire
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Watanabe-Cenini-Söderberg reductive N-heterocyclization has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of a variety of functionalized indoles. Söderberg’s elaboration of this methodology has been utilized as a late-stage cyclization protocol for the synthesis of azepinoindole alkaloids, a class of natural products characterized by an azepane skeleton fused with an indole ring. Short syntheses of the naturally occurring azepino[5,4,3-cd]indole alkaloids, cimitrypazepine, fargesine, and the diastereomeric hyrtioreticulins C & D have been completed starting from commercially available tetra-substituted benzene derivatives. The key azepinoindole core in each case was assembled via an intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction followed by a …
Stationary Automata, Anaam Mutar Bidhan
Stationary Automata, Anaam Mutar Bidhan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation, we investigate new automata, we call it stationary automata or ST-automata. This concept is based on the definition of TF-automaton by Wojciechowski [Woj2]. What is new in our approach is that we incorporate stationary subsets of limit ordinals of uncountable cofinality. The first objective of the thesis is to motivate the new construction of automata. This concept of ST-automata allows us to make a connection with infinite graph theory. Aharoni, Nash-Williams, and Shelah [AhNaSh] formulated a condition that is necessary and sufficient for a bipartite graph to have a matching. For a bipartite …
The Impact Of Comorbidities On Diabetes And Hypertension Co-Management And Healthcare Expenditures, Rashmi Goyat
The Impact Of Comorbidities On Diabetes And Hypertension Co-Management And Healthcare Expenditures, Rashmi Goyat
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hypertension and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are among the most prevalent chronic conditions that often co-exist. Their co-existence increases the risk for comorbidities due to their impact on other organs such as blood vessels (leading to vasoconstriction/hypertension); brain (resulting in increased caloric intake); pancreas (decreased in beta-cell mass and glucose sensing); bone (possibly decreasing bone mass and strength). Occurrence of comorbidities can complicate the already complex care of diabetes and hypertension. It increases the risk of poor patient outcomes such as preventable hospitalization, adverse drug events and mortality. However, different comorbidities can affect the co-management differently. We identified the types …
A Study Of The Durability In Class-M Concrete Due To Chlorid Permeability, Amelia Suzanne Riley
A Study Of The Durability In Class-M Concrete Due To Chlorid Permeability, Amelia Suzanne Riley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The service life of reinforced concrete structures is dependent on the integrity of the steel within the concrete. Over time, due to exposure, chloride and other minerals can penetrate the concrete. Once these materials get to the reinforcing steel, the chloride and oxygen start to corrode and deteriorate the steel. This deterioration will cut the service life of a bridge down dramatically. To prevent this, the permeability of concrete was studied to determine the service life of one of the new Class-M concretes and a Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) mix designs; both developed to produce higher quality concrete. This paper looks …
Britishers In Two Worlds: Maltese Immigrants In Detroit And Toronto, 1919-1960, Marc Anthony Sanko
Britishers In Two Worlds: Maltese Immigrants In Detroit And Toronto, 1919-1960, Marc Anthony Sanko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation looks at the immigration of Maltese laborers and their families to North America, chiefly Detroit and Toronto, between 1919 and 1960. While the Maltese migration followed similar patterns to other Southern European Catholic or skilled laborers in general, it is different in both their timing and colonial association. Most migrants came to North America in the late 19th and early 20th century, but the Maltese migration occurs largely after World War I and extends through the 1960s---the exact time frame of immigration restrictions imposed by both the governments of the United States and Canada. How the Maltese immigrants …
A Method Of Teaching English Speaking Learners To Produce Mandarin-Chinese Tones, Hui Shi
A Method Of Teaching English Speaking Learners To Produce Mandarin-Chinese Tones, Hui Shi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Learning Mandarin Chinese tones is a big challenge for English speaking learners. The average tonal production accuracy is reported to be about 70 percent for intermediate-level learners and 40 percent for beginning-level Chinese learners. The Chinese tonal proficiency significantly influences the learners' communicative effectiveness, including listening and speaking, but research often overlooks tonal production. This study proposed and tested a novel method of teaching English-speaking learners to pronounce Mandarin Chinese tones. This teaching method includes a Chinese tones bookmark, and a 30--50 minutes in-class training module. The research undertook five cycles of Design-Based Research (DBR) implementations with 31 public school …
Analysis Of Dimensionless Scaling Relationships For Rotating Free Flight Bodies, Shawn A. Smearcheck
Analysis Of Dimensionless Scaling Relationships For Rotating Free Flight Bodies, Shawn A. Smearcheck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Though more obscure than traditional flight analysis, the tendency for a rigid body to flutter or tumble in flight during unstable conditions has been analyzed through physical experiments since the 1960s. In more recent years, similar conditions have been subjected to numerical simulation to further understand the effects of dimensionless properties on unstable body motion. It is important to understand dimensionless scaling relationships to compare properties of a body to that of a scaled model or for adjusting data when manufacturing limitations exist. For example, if the geometry of a scaled object could easily be manufactured, within tolerance, but material …
Using Artistic Process To Provide Outlets Of Communication, Understanding, And Healing To Improve The Well Being Of Selected Learners, Sarah Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Public schools in America follow a carefully structured pattern tied directly to the societies and cultures from within. While this structure may create a positive and familiar learning environment for some, others who are unfamiliar with the societal and cultural norms within public school structures, may be left behind. Some learners have simple language barriers that exclude them from activities as well as others during the school day; some choose silence out of fear or embarrassment from unknown circumstances; while others are labeled as Special Education and are not able to speak to others verbally as a "normal" child would. …
Durability Of Gfrp Composites Under Harsh Environments: Effect Of Ph And Temperature, Maria Martinez De Lahidalga De Lorenzo
Durability Of Gfrp Composites Under Harsh Environments: Effect Of Ph And Temperature, Maria Martinez De Lahidalga De Lorenzo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In recent years, demand for Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites as a substitute of conventional materials has increased because of certain inherent advantages of FRPs over conventional materials such as concrete or steel. However, FRPs are also susceptible to degradation under both physical and chemical aging. To evaluate glass FRP composites aging behavior under harsh environments in a cost-effective manner, accelerated aging data are obtained under controlled lab environments, in short duration, to perform a correlation with data from naturally aged samples. Following the time-temperature superposition principle, the mechanical response in the field in a span of time of 75 …

Uav Modeling And Simulation At Normal And Abnormal Conditions, Mofetoluwa Fagbemi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The main objective of this thesis is to develop new capabilities within the West Virginia University (WVU) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) simulation environment for the design and analysis of fault tolerant control laws on small sized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). An aerodynamic model for an electric powered UAV is developed using a vortex lattice method implemented within the computational design package Tornado. One-dimensional look-up tables are developed for the main stability and control derivatives, which are then used to calculate linear aerodynamic forces and moments for the nonlinear aircraft equations of motion. Flight data are used for model verification and …
Switching From Vitamin K Antagonists To Non-Vitamin K Oral Anticoagulants, Drug-Drug Interactions, And Health Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Atrial Fibrillation, Xue Feng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
AF patients with a high risk of stroke are recommended to be treated with oral anticoagulants. Given that the recently available non--vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) received favorable or non-inferior efficacy and safety outcomes as compared with warfarin in the clinical trials, do not require frequent blood drawings, and have fewer drug-drug interactions (DDIs) than warfarin, working-age adults with AF are likely to switch from warfarin to NOACs. However, NOACs may still interact with many drugs that are known to increase the risk of bleeding, which may, in turn, elevate the economic and healthcare burden. The three aims of this …
Precise Orbit Determination Of Cubesats Using Duty Cycled Gps Observations, Sean Lantto
Precise Orbit Determination Of Cubesats Using Duty Cycled Gps Observations, Sean Lantto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
GPS can provide and has provided down to sub-centimeter accurate precise orbit determination (POD) for low Earth orbit (LEO) spacecraft. This is achieved using carrier-phase measurements, and for maximum accuracy, continuous tracking is needed to resolve the unknown constant carrier cycle ambiguities. Continuous GPS tracking can be difficult to obtain on small satellites, such as CubeSats, due to their stringent onboard power resources. This often leads to the GPS receiver power duty cycling during operations to allow for more on-board power to be used for other scientific instruments. This thesis investigates the sensitivity of GPS solution accuracy to duty cycled …
Watching You Watching Me: Lateral Surveillance In Singapore, Yan Song Lee
Watching You Watching Me: Lateral Surveillance In Singapore, Yan Song Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historically, top-down surveillance -- surveillance from the state and other organizations -- has dominated social life, but not anymore. Technological advances drove down the price of surveillance equipment which aided in the proliferation of devices such as dashboard cameras. The widespread use of affordable surveillance equipment gave rise to the phenomenon of lateral surveillance, whereby laypersons can employ surveillance techniques to monitor individuals around them. The Singapore metropolis provides an excellent example with the ubiquitous use of dashboard cameras for cars today. In this research, I focus on Singaporean rideshare drivers who are simultaneously subjected to traditional forms of top-down …
Late-Transition Metal Complexes With Ambiphilic Phosphinoborane Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization And Catalysis., Brian R. Nichols
Late-Transition Metal Complexes With Ambiphilic Phosphinoborane Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization And Catalysis., Brian R. Nichols
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A significant amount of research has explored the impact of phosphinoborane ligand environments on the structure of the coordination sphere of inorganic and organometallic complexes. Ambiphilic phosphinoborane ligands possess a phosphine and a borane that are attached through a chosen linker. This traditionally involves hydrocarbon linkers and leads to either a conformationally free or a constrained ligand system. In particular, this dissertation will focus on the application of phosphinoborane ligands with flexible alkyl linkers. The goal of this study is to utilize the activation and coordination of Lewis acids in the second coordination sphere to influence reactivity at the transition …
Beef Cattle Effluent Treatment In A Denitrifying Bioreactor., Bethani Chambers
Beef Cattle Effluent Treatment In A Denitrifying Bioreactor., Bethani Chambers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Excess nutrient runoff, nitrates and phosphates, has led to the development of algal blooms and hypoxic zones worldwide. Based on a report from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation nearly half of all nutrient sources originate from agricultural production with a quarter of this resulting from improper management of manures. This project focuses on a novel adaption of a denitrifying bioreactor, which has demonstrated removals of agricultural nutrients, which may have implications on the treatment of manure nutrients. These subsurface bioreactors work by providing a substrate, usually wood based, to act as a carbon source to support denitrifying bacteria which in turn …

Routine Regrets: Over Disclosure And Self-Violations Of Privacy In Social Media Spaces, Matthew P. Hartwell
Routine Regrets: Over Disclosure And Self-Violations Of Privacy In Social Media Spaces, Matthew P. Hartwell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A cognitive application of the theory of ritualized media is applied to computer mediated communication to explain unintended consequences of routinization in social media spaces connected to patterns of use and network growth, creating an increased opportunity for self-violations of privacy. While The unintentional self-violation of a digital user's privacy of information, thoughts, and behavior in part stems from interconnected structural components of a user's networks as well as the situational constraints they experience while utilizing social media. This study found that as networks increased in complexity, both in volume and diversity, SNS users experienced a higher likelihood of posting …
