Labor market dynamics are not only relevant for worker welfare, but also matter for firm productivity. This dissertation investigates the dynamic interactions between firms and workers, with a particular focus on the determinants and effects of human resources management practices. Using professional sports labor markets as a natural laboratory, I examine three distinct but interconnected mechanisms: managers, hiring decisions, and contract setting.

The first chapter studies how managers matter for worker productivity by exploiting manager moves in Major League Baseball. I first show that manager effects are primarily match-specific using an AKM-type model. Then, staggered difference-in-differences results show positive effects …

The blood-brain barrier is a physiochemical barrier that limits systemic delivery of therapeutics into brain. develop from complications when a patient is placed on a mechanical ventilator. Endotracheal

intubation puts patients at risk for micro aspiration, which can lead to VAP.

Firearm and tool mark examiners com pare these marks to determine whether two cartridge cases originated from the same firearm. Traditional comparison methods have been criticized for their subjective nature and reliance on examiner interpretation rather than objective decision thresholds. The Congruent Matching Cells (CMC) algorithm was developed as a quantitative, objective method for tool mark comparison. This study focuses on ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs), a class of potent toxins that includes ricin, α-sarcin, and shiga toxin, which irreversibly damage large subunit rRNA. Although the catalytic activity of ricin toxin A chain (RTA) is well characterized, the precise mechanisms linking ribosome damage to altered cellular morphology remain poorly understood. In this study, we engineered a tetracycline-regulatable expression system to express RTA in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We characterized the effects of RTA expression on yeast growth, viability, and reproductive potential. The infraorder Mygalomorphae represents one of the earliest-diverging lineages of spiders, but its fossil record remains sparse relative to the modern diversity of the group. This is a reflection of both ecological and preservational biases, such as the predominantly fossorial habits of many mygalomorphs and the strong bias of the spider fossil record toward amber deposits. Compression fossils from rock deposits are therefore especially important for documenting the evolutionary history of the group. This dissertation explores how Unionist Kentuckians leveraged their military recruitment to negotiate the scope of federal emancipation during the American Civil War. By 1863, the War Department’s need for troops superseded the racial sensitivities of inhabitants in loyal slave states like Kentucky by promising to free and enlist Black men if white recruits failed to fill the quota. Kentucky’s proslavery Unionists responded and white volunteerism surged by 23 percent, 10 percent more than the national average, to fill the quota and negate military emancipation. Consumer complaint behavior research has traditionally focused on interactions between customers and human employees, leaving open questions about how these behaviors may change when the service agent is artificial intelligence. This research looks at whether customers are more likely to engage in opportunistic complaint behavior when interacting with AI service agents and explores what might explain that behavior. The results show that customers are more likely to behave opportunistically when interacting with AI service agents than with human employees. Guided by the Job Demands–Resources framework, this study examined the relationship between RTO mandates and two employee outcomes: employee well-being and turnover intention. This research examines the relationship between nonprofit overhead ratios and performance, specifically focusing on United Way affiliates. The study analyzes Form 990 data from 2010 to 2022, employing fixed effect regression models to examine the potential circular relationship between overhead spending and total revenue. The findings suggest that while current overhead rates are positively correlated with revenue, they may yield diminishing returns. Furthermore, population subgroups are examined by assets, overhead rate, and revenues spectrums to provide more nuanced insight. Interestingly, while not statistically significant within the overall population, increases in overhead rates may positively or negatively impact subsequent year revenue …
