Student Understanding Of The Definite Integral When Solving Calculus Volume Problems, Krista Bresock Jan 2022

Student Understanding Of The Definite Integral When Solving Calculus Volume Problems, Krista Bresock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The concept of integration appears in many different scientific fields, and students’ understanding of and ability to use the definite integral in applications is important to success in their STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) classes. One of the first types of application problems that students encounter is finding the volume of a solid using the definite integral. How students approach these problems and how they use the definite integral to find volumes can have an impact on their future use and understanding of the definite integral.

This study involves a deep and thorough investigation of how ten students understand …

Noise Exposure Trends Among Violating Coal Mines, 2000 To 2021, Hanna Grace Davis Jan 2022

Noise Exposure Trends Among Violating Coal Mines, 2000 To 2021, Hanna Grace Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Noise-induced hearing loss has continued to be a significant issue within the mining industry, even after the passing of the MSHA’s improved noise standard in 2000. NIOSH has recognized that the noise standard enacted by both MSHA and OSHA does not properly protect workers with the 5 dBA exchange rate (i.e., the increase in noise level leading to a doubling of energy) and the lack of emphasizing the use of engineering controls over administrative controls and overreliance on hearing protection device usage. The primary objective of this study is to investigate statistical sound relationships between MSHA noise-related violations and samples …

The Dances Of Diplomacy: French Social Dance Culture In The United States, 1780-1800, Kaylar Gina Moser Jan 2022

The Dances Of Diplomacy: French Social Dance Culture In The United States, 1780-1800, Kaylar Gina Moser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores how social dancing in the United States formed a noteworthy aspect of political, diplomatic, social, and class exchange for U.S. elites both domestically and overseas; and how the cultural dominance over dance that France enjoyed during this period created an informal cultural diplomatic relationship between the United States and France in the 1780s and the 1790s. I argue that U.S. elites utilized this dance culture as a form of upper-class status legitimation that could serve diplomatic purposes. This project increases the purview of U.S. cultural diplomatic studies by centering on the eighteenth century and by utilizing an …

Multi-Task Neuromuscular Generalization And Changes Through The Lifespan, Hannah Delaney Carey Jan 2022

Multi-Task Neuromuscular Generalization And Changes Through The Lifespan, Hannah Delaney Carey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mobility in everyday life requires executing and shifting between a broad assortment of functional tasks and resisting disturbances that could cause falls. Though the importance of successfully performing a variety of functional tasks is recognized and incorporated in clinical assessments (e.g., the Timed-Up-and-Go Test, Berg Balance Scale), little is understood about the underlying neuromuscular control required, or how it changes with age. The neuromuscular control for functional tasks such as walking is typically studied in isolation, or with variations on the same task. Characterizing the coordination required to produce and shift between a wider variety of tasks and resist external …

Heterogeneous Oxidation Of Multi-Component Aqueous Organic Aerosols: The Effect Of Transport Phenomena And Reaction Compartment On Reaction Kinetics., Tadini Wenyika Masaya

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The surface-bulk partitioning of small organic molecules in aqueous droplets was investigated using molecular dynamics. The air-particle interface was modeled using a 80-Å cubic water box containing series of organic molecules and surrounded by gaseous OH radicals. The properties of the organic solutes within the interface and the water-bulk were examined at a molecular-level using density profiles and radial pair distribution functions. Molecules containing only polar functional groups such as urea and glucose are found predominantly in the water bulk, forming an exclusion layer near the water surface. Substitution of a single polar group by an alkyl group in sugars …

Calcite Depression In Bastnaesite-Calcite Flotation System Using Organic Acids, Emmy Muhoza Jan 2022

Calcite Depression In Bastnaesite-Calcite Flotation System Using Organic Acids, Emmy Muhoza

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bastnaesite is the primary source of light REEs, namely cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), to name a few. Bastnaesite is typically concentrated using the froth flotation beneficiation method. Flotation of bastnaesite suffers from high reagent consumption due to the similar surface characteristics of bastnaesite and associated gangue minerals, including calcite. Additionally, complex stages of high-temperature conditioning are often required to suppress the detrimental impact of dissolved calcium ions on the flotation of bastnaesite. This research seeks to investigate the capabilities of organic acids in the bastnaesite-calcite flotation systems to selectively depress calcite minerals and effectively chelate calcium …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During firearm-related incidents, the accurate collection and detection of gunshot residues (GSR) are crucial for reconstructing events and providing investigative leads. Regardless of the strong scientific foundations in the discipline, the standard practice for GSR can benefit from increased confidence in the results and the adoption of reference standard materials and screening tools that can lead to faster turnaround times and improved efficiency. Moreover, the implementation of comprehensive interpretation approaches requires strengthening the current body of knowledge on the transfer and persistence of inorganic and organic GSR compounds (IGSR, OGSR). As a result, the overall objective of this project was …

Experimental And Theoretical Investigation On The Initiation Mechanism Of Low-Rank Coal's Self-Heating Process, Yinan Zhang Jan 2022

Experimental And Theoretical Investigation On The Initiation Mechanism Of Low-Rank Coal's Self-Heating Process, Yinan Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coal spontaneous combustion remains a safety concern during coal mining, transportation, and storage and requires further investigation to develop effective prevention and control strategies. While various intrinsic and extrinsic conditions may influence coal self-heating, low-rank coals are more prone to spontaneous combustion, especially in humid climates. Therefore, quantifying the effect of extrinsic moisture on the self-heating of low-rank coals is critical for understanding the high propensity of low-rank coals for spontaneous combustion. Many studies have qualitatively evaluated the role of extrinsic moisture on the coal self-heating. Despite this, few studies have quantified the contribution of extrinsic moisture on wetting and …

Microwave Enhanced Electron Energy Distribution Functions, John Samuel Mckee Jan 2022

Microwave Enhanced Electron Energy Distribution Functions, John Samuel Mckee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of two (or more) radio frequency (RF) sources at different frequencies is a common technique in the plasma processing industry to control ion energy characteristics separately from plasma generation. A similar approach is presented here with the focus on modifying the electron population in argon and helium plasmas. The plasma is generated by a helicon source at a frequency f0 = 13.56 MHz. Microwaves of frequency f1 = 2.45 GHz are then injected into the helicon source chamber perpendicular to the background magnetic field. The microwaves damp on the electrons via R-mode (anti-parallel to the background magnetic field …

Artificial Intelligence Based Approach For Rapid Material Discovery: From Chemical Synthesis To Quantum Materials, Robert Tempke Jan 2022

Artificial Intelligence Based Approach For Rapid Material Discovery: From Chemical Synthesis To Quantum Materials, Robert Tempke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the advent of machine learning (ML) in the field of Materials Science, it has become obvious that trained models are limited by the amount and quality of the data used for training. Where researchers do not have access to the breadth and depth of labeled data that fields like image processing and natural language processing enjoy. In the specific application of materials discovery, there is the issue of continuity in atomistic datasets. Often if one relies on experimental data mined from literature and patents this data is only available for the most favorable of atomistic data. This ultimately leads …

The Impact Of Formation And Fracture Properties Alternations On The Productivity Of The Multi-Stage Fractured Marcellus Shale Horizontal Wells., Dalal Aldbayan Jan 2022

The Impact Of Formation And Fracture Properties Alternations On The Productivity Of The Multi-Stage Fractured Marcellus Shale Horizontal Wells., Dalal Aldbayan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the reservoir deplete, the pore pressure decreases and the effective stress increases. The increase in the effective stress results in the formation compaction which can alter the formation and hydraulic fracture properties. This is particularly significant for a Marcellus shale horizontal well with multi-stage hydraulic fracture due to low Young's modulus and moderate Poisson's ratio of the Marcellus shale. The degree of the effective stress increase depends on the initial productivity of the well, which is influenced by the hydraulic fracture properties, formation properties, as well as the operating conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to couple the geomechanical and …

Exploration Of Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Athletic Identity, Leah C. Oldham Jan 2022

Exploration Of Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Athletic Identity, Leah C. Oldham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Student-athletes encounter experiences that can cause their identity process and self-concept to be disturbed. Even though athletic identities are strong among intercollegiate athletes, some encounter identity-threatening events that interrupt their identity process, negatively affecting their athletic identity. The present study adds to current research on the athletic identity of student-athletes by examining the athletic identity and self-esteem of student-athletes to determine if a redshirt season is a positive (identity-enhancing) or negative (identity-threatening) event. The intersectionality of age, race, gender, and ethnicity are examined to understand if multiple identities influence the experience of a redshirt season. Results reveal that a redshirt …

Characterizing Locomotor Disturbance Perception In Young Adults, Daniel James Liss Jan 2022

Characterizing Locomotor Disturbance Perception In Young Adults, Daniel James Liss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Falls during walking are a leading cause of injuries across aging. Many of these falls are due to slips and trips. The ability to perceive disturbances to ongoing motion may play an important role in the control of walking balance. However, disturbance perception has been investigated in standing balance, but its role in walking balance due to slip- and trip-like disturbances remains largely unknown. Characterizing locomotor disturbance perception in young adults may lead to a more comprehensive understanding of sensorimotor walking balance control.

This work defined locomotor disturbance perception in response to slip and trip-like disturbances in young adults. We …

A Case Study Of Poland Regarding The Utility Of Strategic Culture, Christian Pierce Griffith Jan 2022

A Case Study Of Poland Regarding The Utility Of Strategic Culture, Christian Pierce Griffith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

From the Cold War until today, researchers and strategists have worked to find better ways of understanding the strategic decisions of other countries. Many diplomats and international decision makers subscribed to the idea that countries always acted rationally with a rational, cost-benefit analysis approach to problems that laid before them. Others, however, wished to explain the seemingly irrational actions countries have taken, and proposed that not all countries share the same objective values and goals. Academic authors and political strategists claimed that countries have Strategic Cultures, defined as frameworks that policy makers operate within where they are influenced by cultural …

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Damage State Missiles Using Overset Meshing Techniques For Application To Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation, Jonathan A. D'Alessio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Significant research over the years has aimed to redefine the flight capabilities of aircraft after sustaining structural damage to critical components. Flight survivability and controllability are key areas of concern when designing fault-tolerant flight control systems to handle a wide range of potential scenarios. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of physically damaged missile systems. Missile counter-defense and intercept capabilities have become more advanced as the United States has focused heavily on these areas over the years. Damaged missiles due to a kinetic intercept capability present an opportunity for analysis of the post-damage implications on flight …

Evaluating Potential Soil Amendments And Geomorphic Methods For Mine Land Reclamation, Amanda Rodrigues Silva Jan 2022

Evaluating Potential Soil Amendments And Geomorphic Methods For Mine Land Reclamation, Amanda Rodrigues Silva

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The United States has approximately 22% of the world’s coal reserves. Since 1961, the electric power sector has been the major user of coal in the U.S., accounting for 91.9% of the coal consumed in the country in 2021. Sixty-two percent of total U.S. coal production in 2021 was sourced from surface mining, and Wyoming, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Montana were responsible for 74% of this total production.

Coal-mining activities expose sulfide minerals in rocks that, when in contact with oxidizing conditions, produce sulfate-rich drainage known as acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD treatment typically involves chemical treatments to raise …

The Burning Bush: Linking Lidar-Derived Shrub Architecture To Flammability, Michelle S. Bester Jan 2022

The Burning Bush: Linking Lidar-Derived Shrub Architecture To Flammability, Michelle S. Bester

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) sensors are powerful tools for characterizing vegetation structure and for constructing three-dimensional (3D) models of trees, also known as quantitative structural models (QSM). 3D models and structural traits derived from them provide valuable information for biodiversity conservation, forest management, and fire behavior modeling. However, vegetation studies and 3D modeling methodologies often only focus on the forest canopy, with little attention given to understory vegetation. In particular, 3D structural information of shrubs is limited or not included in fire behavior models. Yet, understory vegetation is an important component of forested ecosystems, …

Roles And Responsibilities Of A Coach Developer In A Youth Soccer Setting In The United States, Christina Ann Villalon Jan 2022

Roles And Responsibilities Of A Coach Developer In A Youth Soccer Setting In The United States, Christina Ann Villalon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although coaching has a long history guided in the apprenticeship or mentorship model (Taylor & Garratt, 2013), research has primarily focused on the athlete, rarely on the coach, and almost never on whom the coach is serving as an apprentice to, or being mentored or supported by. Internationally, this role has been termed a ‘coach developer,’ but the formalized title and role of the coach developer is still a rather new concept (ICCE, 2014), with most research focused on the coach developer working at elite levels. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the roles and responsibilities of …

Improving Robotic Decision-Making In Unmodeled Situations, Nicholas Scott Ohi Jan 2022

Improving Robotic Decision-Making In Unmodeled Situations, Nicholas Scott Ohi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Existing methods of autonomous robotic decision-making are often fragile when faced with inaccurate or incompletely modeled distributions of uncertainty, also known as ambiguity. While decision-making under ambiguity is a field of study that has been gaining interest, many existing methods tend to be computationally challenging, require many assumptions about the nature of the problem, and often require much prior knowledge. Therefore, they do not scale well to complex real-world problems where fulfilling all of these requirements is often impractical if not impossible. The research described in this dissertation investigates novel approaches to robotic decision-making strategies which are resilient to …

Modeling Nonlinear Dynamic Systems Using Bss-Anova Gaussian Process, Kyle Matthew Hayes Jan 2022

Modeling Nonlinear Dynamic Systems Using Bss-Anova Gaussian Process, Kyle Matthew Hayes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nonlinear dynamic systems are some of the most common variety of systems encountered in the sciences, but are the potentially more onerous to model through system identification than static systems due to their added complexity, sensitivity to initial conditions, and the potential application of new dynamic and nonlinear behavior through any time dependent forcing functions. The BSS-ANOVA Gaussian Process is a Machine Learning method for dynamic system ID that possesses several attributes that make it a natural candidate for this variety of problem. BSS-ANOVA is fully Bayesian, works best for continuous tabular datasets, and fast training and inference times and …

Possible Paths Forward For A Practice-Based Teacher Education Centered On Justice, Joshua Harlan Karr Jan 2022

Possible Paths Forward For A Practice-Based Teacher Education Centered On Justice, Joshua Harlan Karr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation seeks to address limitations of Practice-Based Teacher Education (PBTE) in relation to (1) narrow conceptions of practice and teacher learning, and (2) peripheralization of equity and justice. After aiming to understand the landscape of limitations in PBTE, this study situates itself within specific manifestations of these limitations that exist in common conceptualizations of teacher learning and practice-based pedagogies. To (re)emphasize the situated nature of practice and center equity and justice in PBTE, I theorize an expanded notion of teacher learning, develop design features for contextually situated pedagogies of practice (Grossman et al., 2009), and implement the design with …

Wetland Mitigation Performance Standards: The Intersection Of Science, Practice, And Policy, Jessica Anne Bryzek Jan 2022

Wetland Mitigation Performance Standards: The Intersection Of Science, Practice, And Policy, Jessica Anne Bryzek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Wetland ecosystem spatial extent and integrity have declined due to conversion to anthropogenic land uses. Wetland mitigation offsets the impact on wetlands encountered during development by restoring a previously degraded wetland or creating new wetlands. This activity creates an ecosystem service market where wetland impacts (debits) are offset by wetland restoration/creation (credits). Mitigation aims to replace functions provided by aquatic resources lost during development. Post-restoration monitoring criteria known as performance standards are used to evaluate and verify restored wetland functionality and regulate mitigation credit release. Therefore, performance standards are vital in ascertaining wetland restoration techniques and mitigation processes. In Chapter …

Multimodal Adversarial Learning, Uche Osahor Jan 2022

Multimodal Adversarial Learning, Uche Osahor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) have proven to be an exceptional tool for object recognition, generative modelling, and multi-modal learning in various computer vision applications. However, recent findings have shown that such state-of-the-art models can be easily deceived by inserting slight imperceptible perturbations to key pixels in the input. A good target detection systems can accurately identify targets by localizing their coordinates on the input image of interest. This is ideally achieved by labeling each pixel in an image as a background or a potential target pixel. However, prior research still confirms that such state of the art targets models …

Modeling Of Inverter-Based Microgrid For Small-Signal And Large-Signal Stability Analysis, Vishal Verma Jan 2022

Modeling Of Inverter-Based Microgrid For Small-Signal And Large-Signal Stability Analysis, Vishal Verma

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) such as solar photovoltaic, wind, and battery storage, is both a boon and a bane for electric power systems. On one hand, IBRs have helped in making electrical energy a clean (carbon-free) source of energy. On other hand, the dynamics of IBRs have changed the way power system studies have been carried out. With the advantages IBRs offer over conventional resources, it is assumed that a small distribution power system (microgrid) will have a 100% IBRs penetration in the future. Such a microgrid can operate in grid-connected mode or in an islanded mode. Both modes …

Polarization Properties Of Millisecond Pulsars: Astrophysical Interpretations And Applications, Haley Megan Wahl Jan 2022

Polarization Properties Of Millisecond Pulsars: Astrophysical Interpretations And Applications, Haley Megan Wahl

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pulsars are some of the most extreme objects in the universe; their small yet incredibly predictable spin periods coupled with their strong magnetic fields make them ideal laboratories for study. Not only are they interesting objects themselves, but they can also help us probe different astrophysical environments, such as the interstellar magnetic field and the solar corona.

These stars are highly polarized, and that polarization comes into play in various fields of pulsar physics (such as constraining models of pulsar emission), but obtaining that polarization information can be difficult, as the polarization properties of the light can change as the …

Modeling And Optimization Of A Novel Chilled Ammonia Absorption Process And Amine-Appended Metal-Organic Frameworks For Co2 Capture, Ryan Keith Hughes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Post-combustion capture is one of the leading technologies for CO2 abatement from anthropogenic sources which have contributed significantly to the rise of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Specifically, solvent-based capture post-combustion processes are the industry standard but can suffer drawbacks such as high energy penalties and corrosion. In this work, two possible improvements are investigated which have been recently proposed in the literature. The first is aqueous ammonia as a capture solvent which has been shown to have several advantages including, but not limited to, a lower regeneration energy. The second is a novel solid sorbent, an amine-appended metal-organic framework (MOF). …

A Multi-Method Examination Of The Effects Of Students’ Unconscious Biases On Student Evaluations Of Instructors, Brittany M. Kowalski Jan 2022

A Multi-Method Examination Of The Effects Of Students’ Unconscious Biases On Student Evaluations Of Instructors, Brittany M. Kowalski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this dissertation, I complete three studies to evaluate potential reactions to target role congruity, especially gender role congruity, through an examination of Student Evaluations of Instructors (SEIs). Target role congruity refers to assessments an observer makes of whether or not the various roles a target person fills “fit” with one another. For example, a woman surgeon may be perceived as being in an incongruent role due to the masculine characteristics associated with the occupation and the continued dominance of men in the field. Researchers utilizing congruity theories has shown that both women and men in roles that are incongruent …
