The purpose of the study was to compare and contrast international students attending West Virginia University by country of origin to examine their academic success and academic adjustment at West Virginia University. Data were collected by a mail survey, contacting 622 international students from India, Japan, Korea, People's Republic of China, Republic of China (Taiwan), and Spain (countries with the largest number of enrollment at West Virginia University during academic year 1992-93). From 552 actual contacts, 290 responses were collected (52.5% response rate). Treatment of data included descriptive and inferential statistics. This study examined some plausible factors that were expected to contribute to marital coping behaviors when married couples face marital conflict situations. Self-report measures of personality trait, marital coping behavior, appraisal of marital conflict, marital relationship, and social support were administered to a sample of 197 married community residents ranging in age from 23 to 82 years old. Avoidance, conflict, positive approach, self-blame, self-interest, and seeking social support were the specific marital coping styles examined in this study. Persons with chronic pain often display extreme disability, distress, and other pain behaviors. It is clear that behavioral factors significantly contribute to the consequences of pain for many of these persons. The purpose of this study was to investigate relations of fearful cognitions about pain with other anxiety responses to pain including subjective reports of anxiety, physiological responses, and amount of activity during painful and nonpainful physical tasks. The autoignition of gaseous mixtures representative of coal-derived low-heating-value gaseous fuels in a direct injected diesel engine was investigated theoretically over pressure and temperature ranges of 10 to 50 atm and 800 to 1000 K respectively. A computer model was validated with experimental engine data operated on direct injected synthetic coal gas by Caterpillar, Inc. The computed results demonstrated the importance of the characteristic time associated with the chemical kinetics when compared to fluid dynamics mixing. High gas temperatures resulting from high compression ratios, high boost, high inlet air temperature or other ignition aids are needed to ignite these gases …

Some of the most violent labor struggles in American history were fought by residents of coal company towns. This study investigates whether these struggles grew out of a competitive, or noncompetitive, labor market. In some areas, during the early part of the twentieth century, coal mine labor and capital were brought together through the institution of the company town. In order to capture this institutional context Stephen N. Cheung's sharecropping model was adapted to piece rate coal miners who lived in company towns. This study's purpose was to determine relationships between mathematics achievement in high school seniors and personality types as measured by Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and dichotomies of MBTI type: extraversion or introversion (EI), sensing or intuition (SN), thinking or feeling (TF), judgment or perception (JP). The subjects were 269 twelfth grade volunteers from a school district in West Virginia's eastern panhandle. During the spring semester, 1993, the MBTI was administered during the subjects' English classes. This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived psychological types of male and female community college deans of instruction and their self-perceived leadership styles. The population consisted of 881 male (N = 667) and female (N = 204) community college deans of instruction identified by mailing labels from the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges who were serving in public institutions in the United States listed in the AACJC Membership Directory 1992. Neuropsychologists frequently are called upon to evaluate patients in a medicolegal context. An important part of these evaluations is determining whether the patient is being honest and forthright in his presentation of symptoms and in his test performance, or whether the patient is deliberately exaggerating his deficits via malingering. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the efficacy of using the Recognition Memory Test (RMT), Digit Span Test (WAIS-R), and Knox Cube Test as markers for malingered memory deficits. This study examined the relative effectiveness of two recall-enhancement procedures designed to increase the completeness and accuracy of eyewitness testimony, the Cognitive Interview and the use of Visual Props. Sixty-four subjects (32 college-age subjects and 32 7-10 year-olds) viewed two separate videotapes of simulated crime situations. After 48 hours, subjects were interviewed in two separate trials, first with a baseline minimal prompting procedure and second with one of the two training interviews. In both situations, accuracy was tested via free recall, cued recall (structured questionnaire), and recognition (photographic line-up) formats. This study examined four types of coordination between external degree programs and off-campus library services as perceived by external degree program administrators. To examine these perceptions, a Library Assessment Survey was designed to assess coordination and administrator satisfaction relating to three of the four types of coordination examined. The survey, which was sent to 104 institutions, was also designed to indicate loose or tight organizational coupling with regard to the types of coordination. Results. My research investigates the consequences for equity between and within the regions of an economy when one region alters its taxing policy, and the tax change results in a corresponding change in public expenditure. In contrast to extant theory, I incorporate the effects of an accompanying change in public expenditure on tax incidence in my analysis. I demonstrate that actual tax incidence may be quite different from current predictions because the pattern of change in public expenditure has a significant effect on the ultimate incidence of a tax change. The eriophyid mite Phyllocoptes fructiphilus is the vector of rose rosette disease (RRD). The mite occurs naturally on several wild roses and on multiflora rose. P. rosarum is a related eriophyid mite found on multiflora and other rose plants. A successful mass rearing program was developed and a rearing arena designed to allow observation of individual mites. Biological studies were conducted of both mites including life history, sex ratio, hibernation site, effect of temperature on egg laying and rate of development, and host range. Foot-in-the-door (FITD) technique was applied to a health care setting to determine if this compliance method could be used toward increasing cancer prevention rates. Self-perception was used as the theoretical explanation for the FITD technique. Subjects were mall merchants attending the setting during two days of a scheduled area health fair. Two groups were run. One cell received both a first and second request (the FITD cell), while the control cell received only the second request. The study evaluated the panegyrical claims for high school-based community service programs. Four high school programs from three different states were selected to represent public, private-parochial, single and mixed gender, urban, suburban, and rural orientations. A repeated measure quantitative research design was developed and implemented as well as a qualitative study involving student and teacher/coordinator interviews. The therapeutic approach Ericksonian Resource Retrieval (ERR) is compared to a proven technique for the reduction of musical performance anxiety (MPA) with college student musicians (n = 21) during the jury process. ERR is a technique which utilizes previous life experiences in dealing with future performance. Measures included: the Cognitive Strategies Assessment (CSA), the Personal Report of Confidence as a Performer (PRCP), the A-State Scale (STAI) and Jury Scores (JS). The effects of placing a plane solid surface in close proximity to a Coanda effect jet turning over a cylindrical surface are investigated to help judge the possible application of this type of jet to manufacturing line processes. The Coanda jet is proposed as a coating control mechanism for fluidic coatings on sheets or a particulate removal device. This study explored how differing teaching methodologies affect word concept development during the first semester of kindergarten. Comparing fourteen kindergarten students matched on age, concepts about print, cognitive level and home factors in kindergartens differing in teaching philosophy, the researcher administered tasks to assess development of concept of word. Those tasks structured to assess word concept development, were administered every other week. Clay's "Concepts About Print" (CAP) task provided the pre- and post test assessment. This transportation of mined coal through the cutting zone of a rotary cutting head is comparable to a rotary grinder. In the "grinder", the mined coal particles are subjected to secondary comminution, known as regrinding. A significant amount of coal dust could be generated during regrinding.
