Fault-Injection Through Model Checking Via Naive Assumptions About State Machine Synchrony Semantics, Sabina Joseph Dec 1998

Fault-Injection Through Model Checking Via Naive Assumptions About State Machine Synchrony Semantics, Sabina Joseph

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Software behavior can be defined as the action or reaction of software to external and/or internal conditions. Software behavior is an important characteristic in determining software quality. Fault-injection is a method to assess software quality through its' behavior. Our research involves a fault-injection process combined with model checking. We introduce a concept of "naive assumptions" which exploits the assumptions of execution order, synchrony and fairness. "Naive assumptions" are applied to inject faults into our models. We use linear temporal logic to examine the model for anomalous behaviors. This method shows us the benefits of using fault-injection and model checking and …

Determination And Analysis Of Natural Gas Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions Based On Continuous Cvs Measurement, Jingang Fu Dec 1998

Determination And Analysis Of Natural Gas Vehicle Tailpipe Emissions Based On Continuous Cvs Measurement, Jingang Fu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Code of Federal Regulations Title 40 (CFR-40) specified a formula for calculating constant Dilution Factor (DF) to account for background pollutants in Constant Volume Sampler (CVS) emissions measurement system. However, it is recognized that the DF is dynamically changing due to the CVS mechanism. Based on the continuous measurement data obtained from natural gas vehicle emissions testing, a new approach was used in this study to calculate instantaneous DF of the CVS system during the test cycle. Using the instantaneous DF improves the accuracy of mass emission measurements, especially when the exhaust pollutant concentrations were approaching that in the ambient …

Determination Of Resistance Across Development Section Return Stoppings, James Robert Gandy Dec 1998

Determination Of Resistance Across Development Section Return Stoppings, James Robert Gandy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis describes a ventilation engineering study to determine the resistance across return stoppings on continuous miner development sections. By determining the resistance across return stoppings, one equivalent resistance branch can be created to model leakage across a return stopping line on a development section. This thesis evaluates four types of return stoppings to determine which construction techniques and materials provide the highest resistance, thus allowing minimal leakage from the intake to return entry.;The first phase of the thesis outlines the data gathering process including; station locations, equipment requirements and techniques. Second, the data is used to create a model …

Rheological Properties Of Candle Filter Deposits At Elevated Temperatures And Pressures, Brian Robert Jordan Dec 1998

Rheological Properties Of Candle Filter Deposits At Elevated Temperatures And Pressures, Brian Robert Jordan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In order to improve the performance of hot gas ceramic candle filters, the theological properties of two types of filter deposits were studied. Black powder from the IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) provided consistent data when sampled from two different sources. This powder's mechanical properties were independent of elevated temperature conditions, suggesting that the particle adhesion process is controlled by the theological properties of the powder. Per US DOE request an apparatus was built to more accurately simulate candle filtration, and it was used to show that the process was unaffected by elevated inlet pressure conditions. The system was modeled …

Resonant Ion Heating In A Helicon Plasma, John L. Kline Dec 1998

Resonant Ion Heating In A Helicon Plasma, John L. Kline

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A resonant ion heating system has been developed for heating ions and controlling the ion temperature anisotropy in a helicon plasma source. The system uses two rectangular coils placed on either side of the cylindrical pyrex vacuum chamber to create a time dependent magnetic field transverse to the steady state axial field. A 1 kW, 25--125 kHz RF generator powers the coils. The parallel and perpendicular ion temperatures in argon plasmas are measured with a laser induced fluorescence diagnostic tuned to a metastable argon ion transition. Ion heating of over 800% has been measured for the perpendicular ion temperatures with …

Derepression Of Heterochromatin Inactivation By Induction Of A Nearby Promoter In Drosophila Melanogaster, Daniel Renick Mcneill Dec 1998

Derepression Of Heterochromatin Inactivation By Induction Of A Nearby Promoter In Drosophila Melanogaster, Daniel Renick Mcneill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Position-effect variegation (PEV) describes the compaction of a euchromatic gene placed next to a region of heterochromatin. This compaction into heterochromatin in some instances results in a mosaic phenotype in Drosophila melanogaster. Since its discovery in the 1930's the phenomenon of PEV has been extensively analyzed and many models describing the mechanics have been proposed. But, until recently a model system for analyzing the phenomenon at various developmental stages was not available. In 1996, Lu, Bishop, and Eissenburg were able to use a transgenic construct that variegates for both a heat shock 70 promoter-driven lacZ construct and a mini-white gene, …

Synthesis And Reactions Of Antimony Allyloxides, Matthew Alan Moser Dec 1998

Synthesis And Reactions Of Antimony Allyloxides, Matthew Alan Moser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heterogeneous catalysts usually consist of a high metal oxide or metal dispersed on a reducible oxide support. "Inert" supports have been shown to be intimately involved in heterogeneous catalytic processes. Of interest is the MoO3/Sb2O3 catalyst used in the ammoxidation of propene to acrylonitrile. Simple molybdenum complexes have provided a model for the role of the MoO3/Sb2O 3 catalyst, but the role of the support is not well understood. In order to better understand the role of the support, a series of antimony allyloxide compounds of the formula Sb(OR)3 (where OR = allyl oxide, 3-Methyl-2-buten-1-oxide, 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-oxide, and 3-Methyl-3-buten-1-oxide) by metathesis …

Productive Performance And Fertility Of Broiler Breeders Maintained In Commercial Colony Cages And On The Conventional Floors, Kitogho J. Mwashighadi Dec 1998

Productive Performance And Fertility Of Broiler Breeders Maintained In Commercial Colony Cages And On The Conventional Floors, Kitogho J. Mwashighadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A trial with four replicates was conducted to compare performance and fertility of naturally mated broiler breeders maintained on litter floor versus their counterparts maintained in two tiered colony cages. Cage maintained hens with restricted feeding weighed less (P 0.05) was found in egg weights among treatments. No difference (P > 0.01) was found in feed conversion ratio per dozen eggs produced by hens maintained in cages and those on the conventional floors. A higher (P < 0.05) hen-day production was observed from 29 to 35 weeks of age in broilers maintained in cages than those on the conventional floors, but after this period no difference (P > 0.05) occurred. There were more (P < 0.05) eggs collected with cracks from cages than from the litter floors. The fertility rate was different (P 0.05) difference in mortality rate occurred between hens maintained on the fitter floors versus those in cages. When the breeders were 41 weeks of age, eggs from each treatment group were randomly collected, weighed, and incubated. Offspring from these treatments were randomly allocated to litter floor pens. Progeny were spaced at 23 CM.2 and were reared to 42 days. There was no significant (P > 0.05) difference in growth rate and feed conversion ratio in offspring from hens maintained on the litter floors versus …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Electrophilic Group 4 Metal Complexes Of Benzynes, Shawn Michael Nettles Dec 1998

Synthesis And Characterization Of Electrophilic Group 4 Metal Complexes Of Benzynes, Shawn Michael Nettles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Upon thermolysis in aromatic solvents, diarylzirconacenes and diaryltitanocenes form benzyne intermediates. Formation of the benzyne intermediate presumably occurs via H-atom abstraction of an ortho-H of an aryl ligand by the adjacent sigma-bonded aryl ligand to give the benzyne intermediate. The diphenylzirconocene benzyne intermediate can be stabilized by the addition of PMe3 to afford the PMe3 adduct which has been isolated and structurally characterized. This benzyne intermediate couples with a variety of unsaturated organic fragments including nitriles, alkenes, and acetylenes to form metallacyclic species and has found applications in organic synthesis. This benzyne also couples with tungsten hexacarbonyl to afford a …

Effects Of Celeration Rate On Behavioral Fluency, Kevin J. Munson Dec 1998

Effects Of Celeration Rate On Behavioral Fluency, Kevin J. Munson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In precision teaching, it has been argued that learning should continue until responding is fluent (i.e., it can be performed accurately and rapidly in the presence of distracting stimuli, even after a delay since its acquisition). Furthermore, it has been argued that the speed with which learners achieve fluency (i.e., celeration) also is important. The purpose of the present experiments was to test those propositions. Subjects read binary numbers on a computer screen, and spoke the decimal equivalent of those numbers into voice-recognition equipment. In Experiment 1, responding was reinforced with money arranged on VI schedules for correct responses with …

Fixed -Interval Timeout From Avoidance With Humans, Janet L. Emmendorfer Dec 1998

Fixed -Interval Timeout From Avoidance With Humans, Janet L. Emmendorfer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

On fixed-interval (FI) schedules of reinforcement, humans and other animals often have different response patterns. For example, the pattern typically associated with animals is the scallop: a pause followed by a gradual acceleration in responding. Humans generally show terminal-minimum (i.e., pause until the end of the interval, then make 1 or 2 responses) or constant-rate patterns. There have been numerous investigations of the variables that control such different response patterns. The most common variables in those studies are instructions, verbal ability, response cost, concurrent tasks, and food and points as reinforcers. The purpose of the present experiments was to investigate …

Velocity Profile In Confined Elliptic Fractures, Stephen Ronald Pack Jr. Dec 1998

Velocity Profile In Confined Elliptic Fractures, Stephen Ronald Pack Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary objective of this research is to determine the friction inside a smooth fracture and to incorporate the effect of friction on a fluid transient inside a tapered-elliptical-confined fracture. In order to do so, the non-uniform velocity profile in an elliptic fracture with laminar flow of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids was calculated. A transient flow computer program is presented using the method of characteristics, to show the frictional effects on acoustic damping. However for flow inside a hydraulic fracture, the 3D velocity profile is highly non-uniform, and the use of Vav creates an error as Vmax >> Vav. The …

Investigation Of The Formation Of Residual Ash On Candle Filters, Sharath J. Simha Dec 1998

Investigation Of The Formation Of Residual Ash On Candle Filters, Sharath J. Simha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When coal undergoes combustion, not all the carbon in the coal may be consumed. This is due to improper mixing of reactants, proximity of cold surfaces and the desire to operate combustors at lower temperatures. Depending on the type of coal and the operating conditions of the combustor, there may be about 4--6% of unburned carbon in the refuse. This unburned carbon is carried along in the flow of gases and ash. If the combustion gas products are to pass through a high temperature gas filtration system, ash and unburned carbon are deposited on the wall of a candle filter. …

Computational Models Of Particle Size Effects On Brittle Oxide Scale Erosion, Ravi S. Tangirala Dec 1998

Computational Models Of Particle Size Effects On Brittle Oxide Scale Erosion, Ravi S. Tangirala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Metals and alloys designed for machines at elevated temperatures have microstructures and chemistries optimized to provide strength and resistance to oxidation. The majority of the commercial high temperatures metal or alloys intended to use at temperatures below 850°C or so rely on the formation of a continuous surface layer of essentially oxide scale for further oxidation resistance. Erosion of these machine parts by the small solid particle entrained in the liquid or gaseous working environment is a serious problem in many industrial applications. Numerous experiments have been conducted to obtain empirical relations for predicting material loss during erosion and to …

Resistance-In-Series Modeling In High-Shear Rotary Ultrafiltration, Ronald L. Vaughan Jr. Dec 1998

Resistance-In-Series Modeling In High-Shear Rotary Ultrafiltration, Ronald L. Vaughan Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Large volumes of spent oil-in-water emulsions are produced in the metal working (MW) industry. In high-shear rotary ultrafiltration (HSR-UF), disk membranes are rotated at speeds up to 1,750 rpm to generate hydraulic turbulence, which scours the membrane surface. Thus, the pump is required only to provide transmernbrane pressure and a small amount of recirculation.;A parametric waste-specific study was conducted to assess the ability of the resistance-in-series (RIS) permeate flux model to predict pressure-flux data collected in the HSR-UF of a synthetic MW fluid. Experiments were conducted using a pilot-scale HSR-UF system with a 0.11 mum average-pore size membrane at a …

Prediction Of Turbulent Mixing At The Interface Of Density Stratified, Shear Flows Using Cfd, Matthew Robert Umbel Dec 1998

Prediction Of Turbulent Mixing At The Interface Of Density Stratified, Shear Flows Using Cfd, Matthew Robert Umbel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerical simulations were performed involving stratified, shear flows that have been investigated experimentally. One set of simulations dealt with a homogeneous shear flow involving miscible fluids. The other set of simulations dealt with a developing shear layer involving immiscible fluids. The re-fueling of a compensated fuel/ballast tank, which is partially characterized by a shear layer, was also simulated. In all the simulations a single fluid, scalar transport multiphase model and the k-epsilon turbulence model were used. In the simulations involving miscible fluids an interfacial thickness relationship given by delta/H∼(Ri*)--2.1 and an entrainment relationship given by E∼(Ri*)--1.1 were predicted. These relationships …

Pseudospectral Techniques For Non -Smooth Evolutionary Problems, Chris Palmer Guenther Dec 1998

Pseudospectral Techniques For Non -Smooth Evolutionary Problems, Chris Palmer Guenther

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A pseudospectral approach is used to solve non-smooth evolutionary problems using Fourier collocation and Chebyshev collocation. It is well known that pseudospectral methods for smooth problems can offer superior accuracy over finite difference and finite element methods.;This paper explores the use of pseudospectral methods for non-smooth evolutionary problems in the area of hyperbolic heat transfer. Boundary and initial conditions are considered which cause instantaneous jumps, in the temperature and flux, prior to the propagation of a thermal wave into the medium. There is a considerable amount of literature that has investigated hyperbolic heat transfer under similar conditions, the common problems …

Development And Accuracy Determination Of A Two-Component Doppler Global Velocimeter (Dgv), Stephen M. Naylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A two-component Doppler Global Velocimeter (DGV) system was constructed and tested to research problems associated with the accuracy of this unique system. The uniqueness of the system lies in its ability to simultaneously and non-intrusively measure velocities in a laser illuminated plane. A key component of the system is a frequency discriminating optical filter containing iodine vapor which allows direct measurement of the Doppler frequency shift caused by particle motion. Corrections for optical distortions and non-uniform intensities as well as the conversions from intensity data to velocity data are performed by an extensive image processing algorithm. Measurements were made of …

School Bus Crashworthiness, Ganesh R. Panneer Aug 1998

School Bus Crashworthiness, Ganesh R. Panneer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerical simulation of automotive crashes play an important role in reducing the cost and time taken for predicting the results of a collision. Computer simulation of a vehicle requires that the vehicle structure be modeled in a finite element package by discretizing the geometry into a number of elements.;Every day thousands of children travel to school and school related events by bus. Not necessarily all the journeys are short and safely driven. The potential for serious injuries is possible in the event of a crash. The severity of injury in an offset frontal impact is higher than the full frontal …

Multi-Selectible Continua, Joseph Edward Mcparland Aug 1998

Multi-Selectible Continua, Joseph Edward Mcparland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A particular coexistence of multiple continuous selections (a "multi-selection") within a function space for a non-degenerate metric continuum X is investigated for the hyperspaces 2X and C(X). It is demonstrated that (i) multi-selections do not exist for 2X and that (ii) the existence of a multi-selection for C(X) is equivalent to X being a dendrite.

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Polymeric Stationary Phases For Capillary Liquid Chromatography And Electrochromatography., Zhixin Jessica Tan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The stationary phase is at the heart of chromatographic separation techniques. In the pursuit of higher separation efficiency and resolving power, methods for the synthesis of novel polymeric stationary phases were developed. These stationary phases were evaluated using microscale separation techniques that have inherent high efficiency: open-tubular liquid chromatography (OT-LC), open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC), and packed column capillary electrochromatography (PC-CEC). A new technique was developed for the in situ synthesis of thin film polymer stationary phases inside small diameter fused silica capillaries. This technique allows the use of readily available and inexpensive polyimide jacketed capillaries, and provides greater control over …

Inhibition Of Fibrogenic Tnf(Alpha) Gene Expression In Pulmonary Macrophages By Antisense Oligonucleotides., Weiwen Liang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this study, we investigated the possibility of using antisense oligonucleotides directed against TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA to specifically inhibit TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} production in silica-exposed rats and to test whether this inhibition can provide any protection against silicosis. To optimize the length and sequence of antisense oligonucleotides against TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA, the effect of oligonucleotide length and different target sites on TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA on the antisense inhibitory activity of TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} production was investigated. The antisense oligonucleotides targeted to the cap site, the initial codon and the coding region of TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA was found equally effectively. The activity of antisense oligonucleotides against TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA increased …

Immunotoxic Effects Of Pulmonary Exposure To Isobutyl Nitrite In The Murine Macrophage., Avijit Roy Jan 1998

Immunotoxic Effects Of Pulmonary Exposure To Isobutyl Nitrite In The Murine Macrophage., Avijit Roy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Isobutyl nitrite (IBN) is a volatile compound that causes vasodilation and smooth muscle relaxation. A history of abuse of this compound by HIV positive homosexual men has been associated with an increased incidence of Kaposi's Sarcoma, a tumor whose growth is responsive to cytokines. Previous work with the murine pulmonary model has demonstrated that exposure to IBN can suppress cytotoxic T cell ability, reduce the production of nitric oxide by macrophages and impair their ability to kill P815 targets. The overall aim of this project was to further characterize the nature of the immune alteration in the murine macrophages. In …

Hydrogeochemical Response Of An Acid-Producing Mine Spoil Aquifer To Induced Alkaline Recharge., Matthew H. Daly Jan 1998

Hydrogeochemical Response Of An Acid-Producing Mine Spoil Aquifer To Induced Alkaline Recharge., Matthew H. Daly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An experiment involving in situ neutralization of acidic ground water was performed on a mine-spoil aquifer in central West Virginia. The 45-acre aquifer was subjected to infiltration of lime slurry through a sludge pond located near the center of the mine. Ground-water and spring-water samples collected before lime infiltration indicate that a localized zone of neutralized ground water (pH 7) existed close to the sludge pond prior to the experiment. Concentrations of elevated sodium, pH and alkalinity correlate with the extent of neutralized ground water. This alkalinity is attributed to infiltration of sodium hydroxide-treated sludge, pumped into the sludge pond …
