Although forty-six of the fifty states (92%) currently require continuing dental education (CDE) course attendance to maintain licensure in dental hygiene, a wide range of continuing education requirements exists. The purpose of this study was to survey registered dental hygienists regarding their perceptions and experiences of continuing education and the existence and extent of competency assessments conducted at continuing education courses attended. A 28 question survey was mailed to licensed dental hygienists residing in West Virginia (n=780) and Colorado (n=1130). Although continuing education continues to be a viable method of gaining knowledge and enhancing skills, CDE course assessment of competencies …

Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) are being used in an increasing number of structures and machines because of their advantages over conventional materials such as steel or aluminum. However, sustained exposure to seemingly nominal service conditions can act to degrade the strength of an FRP composite, potentially negating the advantages of their use. This research sought to develop a theoretical model to predict the long-term strength of an FRP composite subjected to environmental exposure. Previous work has shown that thyroid hormones are required if ewes are to enter the nonbreeding season, and that these hormones allow estradiol to exert its negative feedback effects to achieve this condition. Evidence also suggests that glial plasticity may contribute to this effect. To determine the role of thyroid hormones in reproductive cyclicity, ewes were ovariectomized and given estradiol implants. Some animals were then thyroidectomized and some of these ewes received thyroxine supplements intracerebroventricularly. Dual label immunocytochemistry was employed to determine the degree of Fos/TH colocalization and measure any changes in glial ensheathment of A15 cells. Analysis revealed no …

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor in respiratory disease, cancer and cardiovascular diseases and other health problems. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of smoking on white blood cells and to assess the relation between smoking, red blood cells, nutrient intake, and newborn weight among pregnant WIC participants residing in Northern West Virginia. The study consisted of 110 pregnant women. Data for this study were obtained by in-person interviews at the clinical site or at the participants' home. This research introduces the social world of gaming and looks at how one achieves the identity of gamer. The methods are a form of triangulation in order to strengthen the research, consisting of participant observation, written questionnaire, and one-to-one interviews, with an emphasis on the personal narrative. The main venues for the research were the two largest US gaming conventions, Origins and GenCon. From the data collected, elements of the world of gaming and becoming a gamer were learned and are presented. Essentially, the identity of gamer comes from the individual but is reinforced through the world of gaming.

To date, research investigating parental influences contributing to the development of social anxiety has focused on maternal characteristics and the mother-child relationship. The role of fathers in the development of childhood-onset psychopathology has received relative inattention (e.g., Phares, 1996) and remains virtually unexplored within the realm of social anxiety. This study focused on identifying both maternal and paternal factors that may impact the development and maintenance of social anxiety experienced by school-aged children. A new generation of resin-modified glass ionomer adhesive (RMGI) which has fluoride releasing and recharging properties may be effective in prevention of white spot lesions around orthodontic brackets. The objectives of this study were to compare 1) the amount of fluoride release in vitro, 2) the amount of decalcification around brackets among a resin-modified glass ionomer (Fuji Ortho LC), a fluoride releasing composite resin (Light Bond), and a non-fluoride releasing composite resin (Resilience L3) in vitro and in vivo. Avoidance is a core problem among patients with panic and other anxiety disorders that is often targeted in treatment. The present study compared the effects of acceptance versus control therapeutic contexts on avoidance of an aversive interoceptive stimulus in a controlled laboratory setting. Previous research has demonstrated the ironic and paradoxical effects of control-oriented strategies. Therefore, it was hypothesized that acceptance strategies will be more useful in the reduction of avoidance. Droplet formation is a common phenomenon that occurs in liquid-liquid or liquid-gas two-phase flows where turbulent mixing is present. This study considers only liquid-liquid systems and presents the theoretical background and validation of a droplet formation and entrainment (DFE) model with application to stratified shear layer flows of diesel fuel and water. An in vitro laboratory protocol for assessing cold hardiness (CH) in rhododendrons based on electrolyte-leakage was developed. The raw leakage data were transformed into percent-adjusted injury, which showed high correlation with injury data based on visual observations. The percent-adjusted injury data---fitted to the Gompertz function coupled with the Jackknife method---allowed for reliable and statistically sound estimations of Rhododendron leaf freezing-tolerance (LFT). Utilizing this method, Tmax values for Rhododendron cultivars, species, and populations were determined and ranked relatively. The purposes of this study were to: (a) determine whether older adults would use logic-based strategies on a concept identification task when the stereotyped content of the task was changed to "experience free"; (b) determine whether older adults would use logic-based strategies when the stereotyped content was left intact after completing an "experience free" version of the concept identification task, and (c) explore relations of potential causal mechanisms of strategy use for older adults such as problem interpretation or past experience. Concrete slabs are integrally cast with girders or stringers (stiffening system) resulting in floor slabs, bridge decks, footers, retaining structures and others. A portion of slab between a stiffening system acts as flange and bends in unison with the stiffening system, i.e., classic T-beam action. The purpose of the study was to determine if maternal attitudes influenced the creativity of preschool children. The Torrance Test of Thinking Creatively in Action and Movement (TCAM) was used to measure the creativity level of the children. The Parent As A Teacher (PAAT) was used to assess maternal attitudes. The subjects in this project were 52 preschool children. Maternal attitudes were not significantly related to the creativity level of preschool children. Socioeconomic status had significant effects on the PAAT overall, creativity and control subscales. Socioeconomic status was a poor predictor of child TCAM scores and the additional PAAT subscales. …

The production of acid mine drainage (AMD) from surface and underground coal mine sites in northern West Virginia is a major environmental problem and continues to receive much attention in affected communities. Reclamation efforts at these sites often require extensive and costly treatments and are based on limited subsurface information. Use of geophysical techniques to characterize these sites, monitor remedial efforts, and provide additional subsurface information is evaluated in this study. Sedimentation is the major pollutant of waters in North America. Most research on the effects of increased sedimentation has focussed on its effects on stream habitat and its ramification on the reproductive potential of fish. Low dosages of progestogens promote persistent follicles, high systemic estrogen and low fertility. The objectives of this study were to determine effects of a reduction in progesterone on (1) morphology of oocytes and intrafollicular concentrations of estradiol. Cows on low progesterone (n = 12) received used intravaginal progesterone inserts on d 4 after estrus and prostaglandin (PG) F2alpha (25 mg, i.m.) on d 6. Control animals (n = 12) received saline on d 6. The oocyte and follicular fluid were recovered from the largest follicle on d 8 or d 10.;Serum estradiol was lower during d 4--6 but greater (P < .01) during d 7--10 in cows treated with progesterone inserts and PGF 2alpha while the largest follicle was larger in treated cows on day 10 only (14 vs. 12 mm; P < .05). Intrafollicular concentrations of estrogen were greater in treated than in control cows (990 +/- 87 vs 191 +/- 106; P < .01). Progesterone in follicular fluid (mean = 42 ng/ml) did not differ. Oocytes were observed in oocyte nuclear stage I in the control group on d 8. All other oocytes were in nuclear stage II. In addition, the degree of clumping of mitochondria, the percentage of intact cumulus cell processes and percentage of normally shaped mitochondria was greater in oocytes from d 8 control cows than in all other groups.;Changes in concentrations of estradiol and oocyte morphology typically associated with the preovulatory period had occurred within 2 d after a reduction in progesterone, even when low peripheral concentrations of progesterone were maintained. These earliest stages of oocyte maturation occurred in response to a reduction in progesterone. Similar changes in oocyte morphology were observed in control animals by d 10 of the estrous cycle, probably representing the onset of atresia.

This thesis is a study of the failure of trade unionism in the Wheeling District mills in the early twentieth century, a district whose unions had previously enjoyed great success. The conversion to tin plate in the district was, at first, beneficial to the skilled workers in the union, but with the combination of companies culminating in the creation of the United States Steel Corporation, the union could no longer count on the skill of its members for survival. Ultimately, Wheeling steelworkers were victims of the modernization of the steel industry and a union that would not adopt industrial unionism …

The actin filament associated protein of 110 kDa (AFAP-110) is a SH2/SH3 binding partner for Src. It has two SH2 binding motifs, one SH3 binding motif, one proline rich motif, two PH domains and one serine/threonine substrate region at its amino terminus and has been hypothesized to function as an adapter protein that mediate the effects of different signal proteins upon actin filaments. The first measurements of an ion temperature anisotropy/beta inverse correlation in a high beta laboratory experiment are presented. The observation of this correlation is similar to such a correlation present in in-situ spacecraft measurements and predicted in theory. Low-frequency fluctuations are also observed. Eighteen 200 ha plots were established in the Monongahela National Forest (MON), Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and in the George Washington National Forest (GW), Augusta County, Virginia. From 1995 through 1998 black light traps, foliage pruning, and canvas bands were used to collect macrolepidopteran adults and larvae. During 1997 and 1998, 6 plots each were aerially treated with nucleopolyhedrosis virus (Gypchek(TM); GC) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk: Bt). The remaining 6 plots were left untreated (Ref). Leaf samples from Bt plots were analyzed for toxin concentrations using enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay techniques. Thin filaments for use in glass, polymer, or textile industries are formed by extruding molten material through an orifice to form a continuous filament. These filaments are cooled rapidly from the melting temperature of the material to near room temperature. If this cooling occurs too rapidly or too slowly imperfections can develop in the filaments.
