We study the three dimensional simplified hydrodynamic model of semi-conductors where the equations of energy conservation are eliminated by assuming a pressure-density relation. The system is a combination of three hyperbolic equations coupled with an elliptic one. We prove the linear stability and the existence of local classical solutions to the initial boundary value problem for this system. The Neumann condition corresponds to an insulated boundary. Because a compatible condition is required in solving the Neumann BVP (Boundary Value Problem), a special iteration scheme is introduced to handle this situation. This study examined the attendance and participation behaviors of undergraduate students. Much of the existing literature had focused on student variables in determining attendance and participation in the classroom. Here, the focus was on instructor variables instead. Students completed questionnaires and reported their own perceptions on their attendance and participation in class as well as their perceptions of their instructor's nonverbal immediacy, homophily, interpersonal attraction, and verbal aggression. The results indicated that students who perceived their teachers as higher in immediacy, homophily, and interpersonal attraction were more likely to attend class and more likely to participate in class. Supported employment approaches may have a significant impact on the Psychosocial experiences of workers with mild and moderate mental retardation. The present study examined the influence of supported employment level (i.e., individual vs. group) on the depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction of employees participating in a vocational rehabilitation program. It was hypothesized that supported employment level differences would be reflected in the dependent variables of depression, loneliness, and lifestyle satisfaction reported by participants (N = 54). A multidimensional theoretical model, Conceptual Change Science Learning (CCSL), was developed based on Standard Model of Conceptual Change and Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model. The model addresses three main components of science learning, namely the learner's conceptual ecology, the message along with its social context, and the cognitive engagement. A learner's conceptual ecology is organized around three clusters, including epistemological beliefs, existing conceptions, and motivation. Learner's cognitive engagement is represented by a continuum from peripheral processing involving shallow cognitive engagement to central processing involving deep cognitive engagement. Through reciprocal, non-sequential interactions of such constructs, the learners' conceptual change is achieved. …

This study analyzes the operations of British trusteeship with regard to Luyia land rights in Western Kenya between 1930 and 1952, using the Kakamega gold rush as a case study. It examines the determinant factors and interests, both imperial and local, that influenced and shaped the promulgation and adoption of the Native Land Trust Ordinance, 1930; and details how the gold discovery in North Kavirondo reserve in 1931 led to drastic land policy reversal entailed in the Native Land Trust (Amendment) Ordinance, 1932. Several animal models were assessed for their ability to produce pathology with a potential for developing fibrosis. Pathology was determined using standard histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. In a model of ethanol-induced myopathy, cytochrome p450 1A1/2 was induced in endothelial cells (i.e. capillaries) but there was insufficient pathology to produce fibrosis. Two models of overload, tenotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle and a tetanus toxin overload model showed morphological changes including: degenerating fibers, central nuclei, variable myofiber sizes, and an expansion of the extracellular matrix, but changes were non-uniformly distributed making this a poor fibrosis model. West Virginia's South Branch Valley of the Potomac River played a crucial, but little studied, role in the American Civil War. Writing of the August 7, 1864, Battle of Moorefield, historian Robert K. Krick has noted that it “has received far less attention than it deserves.†In this work, it will be demonstrated that not only the August 7, 1864, Battle of Moorefield, but the conflict in the region in general is deserving of in-depth study. The study examined the impact of working different shifts on the injury and illness rates at a diesel engine factory. A retrospective study was conducted using injury data from 1995-1999 collected from the test site. The injury rates of the shifts were compared with each other and with other studies. The study showed that there was not a significant increase in the amount of injuries on the first shift as compared to the other two main shifts. This indicates that the off shifts may not necessarily cause an increase in the injury and illness rate at the facility. The results …

A field study was conducted on the apple cultivar ‘Nittany’ on M.9 and M.26 rootstocks. Four crop load treatments levels: an unthinned check, 7.5, 5.0, and 2.5 fruit per centimeter trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) were imposed on replicated trees of each rootstock to determine the effects on shoot growth and fruit size. Average terminal and bourse shoot growth were greater for the M.26 rootstock than the M.9 rootstock. Crop load levels had no significant effect on shoot growth. Thinning fruit to the 2.5 fruit/cm2 TCSA level showed the most consistent results in fruit diameter, length, and weight. Fruit size as …

The experiments conducted include temperature(5K – 300K) and magnetic field(upto 55 kOe) variations of magnetization under zero field cooled and field cooled conditions. The monetary model of the exchange rate has proven to be an unreliable representation of exchange rates. Nevertheless, the monetary model is applied to the case of Colombia in this study. There are two reasons to believe that the model may offer an accurate description of exchange rates for Colombia. First, Colombia is a moderately high inflation economy, especially when compared to G7 countries. Second, the target zone arrangement established since 1991 was not fully credible, and as a result, the exchange rate appropriates a purely flexible exchange rate system. This study compares five change detection techniques to study land cover change associated with the growth of Las Vegas, Nevada, one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S. The data used were three MSS images covering a twenty year period (1972, 1986 and 1992), and one TM image from 1993. The change detection methods used were red band image differencing, principle component analysis, post-classification comparison, change vector analysis, and multi-temporal compositing and classification. Subjects were 43 female athletes who participated on three different teams. Interventions were one-page two-sided nutrition newsletters. A consent form, information sheet and 20- question pre-test were given the first day of practice, after which subjects received newsletters every month for three months. Athletes were given a post-test three weeks after they had received the third newsletter. Pre and post-test scores were compared using t-tests. Results showed that nutrition education in the form of newsletters had a significant effect on knowledge. Electronically accessible images and accompanying explanatory text of maps, photographs, postcards, newspaper articles, and book and pamphlet excerpts pertaining to the South Park National Register Historic District in Morgantown, West Virginia. The images of these archival sources are used to trace chronologically, from its beginning in the first decade of the twentieth century to the present, the stages of growth and expansion of this particular neighborhood.

The purpose of the study was to provide information on the influence of agriculture activity participation on the pursuits of secondary agriculture students in West Virginia. Data were collected via questionnaires. The questionnaires consisted of three parts: (a) demographic data; (b) post-secondary status; and (c) grade performance and agriculture activities participation. Participation levels were determined by combining scores received in SAEP, technical agriculture competitions and leadership activities. Post-secondary status was grouped by education in the field of agriculture and non-agriculture, employment in agriculture and non-agriculture, unemployment, and military service. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is known to inhibit steroidogenesis in granulosa and luteal cells. This study investigates ET-1 gene expression to localize the source of synthesis. Previous studies showed the presence of ET-1 in porcine ovarian granulosa cell cultures. The present study provides the first evidence that gene expression of ET-1 occurs in the porcine ovary exclusively within the granulosa cells of antral follicles. ET-1 immunoreactivity was observed in 65.7% of the large antral follicles, particularly in more differentiated granulosa cells. An autocrine role for ET-1 is suggested because ET-1 binding sites were previously detected here. ET-1 expression and atresia (one aspect …

This study was designed to determine listening preferences of undergraduate agricultural curricula majors attending West Virginia University during the1998 spring semester according to the Listening Styles Profile. The Listening Styles Profile defines listening preferences in four main categories: People-Oriented, Action-Oriented, Content-Oriented, and TimeOriented. The objectives of this study were to define listening preferences of undergraduate agricultural curricula majors and determine if listening styles are influenced by demographics. The demographic variables included: home location, rank, gender, grade point average, and major. It was concluded that agricultural curricula majors are predominantly People-Oriented listeners. In 1831 Maryland colonizationists broke away from the American Colonization Society (ACS) and formed the Maryland State Colonization Society (MSCS) in an effort to control the colonization movement in Maryland. This was done in response to pressure to colonize Maryland’s rapidly increasing free African-American population in “Maryland in Africa.” The MSCS took deliberate steps to avoid the problems faced by the ACS and its colonists. These steps were not successful and actually led to conflicts between Maryland colonists and missionaries. Background quantities of trace elements were surveyed in Major Land Resource Area 126, the Central Appalachian Plateau in northwestern West Virginia. Three pedons each of Upshur, Vandalia, (both Typic Hapludalfs) and Gilpin (Typic Hapludult) soils were described and sampled in Doddridge, Mason and Clay counties. Twelve trace elements were extracted from soil samples by the EPA 3051 and hydrofluoric acid methods. The data from both procedures showed that except for Ca and Mg, the HF method extracted greater quantities of trace elements than EPA Method 3051. Significant differences were found for all trace elements except Cd, Cr, and Pb. Calcium, …

Bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) form a fundamental link in US Atlantic Coast estuaries converting zooplankton biomass to edible fish protein for recreationally and commercially important fish species such as striped bass (Morone saxatilis), bluefish (Pomatomus saltarix), and weakfish (Cynoscion regalis) and are often consumed by many species of seabirds. Bay anchovy numerically dominate the Hudson River ichthyofauna composition from May through November and are considered an important link in the Hudson River Estuary food chain. Minimal and conflicting research exists on the fluoride content of bottled water and the degree of fluoride elimination using home filtration systems. A convenience sample of bottled waters (N=65) and home filtration systems (N=2) available in West Virginia was obtained. Results indicate: 1) fifty-seven of the brands tested contain fluoride below the optimal level; 2) only three brands had documented on the label, yet these total labels were fluoride levels inconsistent labeling; 3) seven have municipal water as their source; and 4) neither filtration system tested significantly reduced fluoride from the water. My thesis is a collection of short stories focusing on various stages of “a particular girl,” hence the title of the work. Structurally, I aim for a chronological sequence of tales focusing on the life and experience of a female character starting at her youth and ending in early adulthood. I intend for the voice, dialogue, general vocabulary, and content to increase in age, so to say, as the stories unfold. In this work I defend the notion of the necessity for ESL learners to undergo some sort of identity shift process. This process would be a smooth and gradual evolution by reason of which ESL learners (and, by extension, learners of any foreign language) would develop a second identity that would encompass all the aspects associated to the L2 of their choice, apart from its exclusively linguistic and structural components. I introduce mainly the necessity of building awareness among teachers, especially—but not exclusively—among monolingual foreign language instructors.
