This thesis project outlines the development and implementation of a complex GIS project in a government agency. The objective of the project was to integrate a public domain GIS package (GRASS) with a commercial structured query language database in order to undertake Agricultural Non-Point Source (AGNPS) water quality modeling. Three general areas of GIS technology were investigated consisting of technical issues involved in linking GIS; the model; database development; and a discussion of system performance from an institutional perspective.

This study examined the opportunities that exist for communication experts, particularly graduate students, in the field of consulting. Interviews were conducted with established consultants to determine how consultants describe their job functions, what kinds of consultants are needed in organizations, and what barriers to entry exist for those wishing to enter the field. Results indicate that there are several factors to consider when attempting to enter the field of consultation.

This work is devoted entirely to symmetric continuity and consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2, based on the paper [Sz2], is the main part of this work. In this chapter we generalize classic theorems on functions defined on the intervals to functions defined on arbitrary subsets of the real line. Chapter 3 deals with a weaker condition than symmetric continuity---weak symmetric continuity. It is an extended version of my paper [Sz1]. Chapter 4 is based on the paper [CSz]. Effects Of Acetaminophen On Estrogen-Responsive Alkaline Phosphatase In Ishikawa Endometrial Cancer Cells, Janet A. Dowdy

This study examines the effect of acetaminophen (APAP) on the estrogen-responsive gene alkaline phosphatase in Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells. Basal levels of alkaline phosphatase activity were significantly inhibited in cells treated with 0.03, 0.1, 0.3 and 1mM APAP compared to control. Alkaline phosphatase activity induced with 1nM estradiol was significantly inhibited in a concentration dependent manner by 0.0.1, 0.3 and 1mM APAP. APAP did not directly inhibit the activity of alkaline phosphatase at any of the concentrations tested. Increasing estradiol concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 1nM) did not alter the level of inhibition of alkaline phosphatase activity by 0.1, 0.3 or …

Tension members consisting of single and double angles, single channels and similar sections are frequently used for lateral bracing and as truss elements. Such members will normally have eccentric connections, and it is often permitted, by current design specifications, to neglect this eccentricity in the design of the member. This study assessed the service life of organic vapor cartridges exposed to jet Propulsion Type 8 fuel vapor. Two experiments were conducted that involved exposing 45 cartridges to three challenge concentrations (300, 600, and 1200 parts per million) of fuel vapor and two relative humidity levels (50 and 80 percent). The impact on service life of (1) high relative humidity conditions and (2) prior static exposure to fuel vapor were evaluated.;This study concluded that the 80 percent relative humidity test condition had a statistically significant effect on breakthrough time versus the 50 percent relative humidity condition, reducing service life by …

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common prostatic condition among aging males significantly affects quality of life. Though clinical practice guidelines for BPH management have been established, little research has been done to determine adherence to such guidelines. To assess adherence to such guidelines, this study evaluated diagnostic and treatment modalities in BPH management in the VA population (a population with a high percentage of elderly males). A survey, containing simulated BPH patient cases, was mailed to 292 VA urologists, of which 114 (39%) responded. Urologists showed good adherence to the recommended diagnostic tests but preferences varied for the optional tests …

Custom photoreflectance modulation spectroscopy and photoconductivity spectroscopy set-ups were constructed and used to characterize semiconductor materials. The ternary Cd1--xZnxTe compound was studied to achieve fine control over its composition to provide lattice-matched substrates for the growth of Hg1--xCdxTe which is used in infrared detectors. Photoreflectance spectroscopy, capable of accurate estimations of energy levels in semiconductors, was applied to determine composition in CdZnTe standards via band gap energy determinations. The excitonic contributions at room temperature were shown to be in agreement with literature data. The intent of this study was to examine parental attitudes toward parenting and parenting styles before and after participation in a rural parent education program. The parental attitudes toward parenting were measured by the Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI). The three parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive, were measured by the Parenting Style Dimension (PSD). Four hundred and fifty-one Non-Industrial-Private-Forest (NIPF) owners (49% response rate) in West Virginia responded to a survey of their forestry assistance needs. Most of the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, their reasons for owning the property, the types of activities they were engaged in on the property and the agencies that provided assistance by themselves significantly (Chi2 & ANOVA) differentiated those interested and not interested in obtaining assistance. However, when all 39 factors were considered together (Logistic Regression) only a small number of these factors were needed to explain the difference between landowners wanting and not wanting a specific assistance …

The orientation of adsorbates on metal colloids was studied by Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We studied the orientation of cyanopyridines, aminomethylpyridines and 4-biphenylcarbonitrile on gold and copper colloids as a function of concentration of the adsorbates. It was found that the orientation of the adsorbate did not change as a function of concentration when adsorbed on gold colloids and was end-on for all concentrations. The orientation of 4-biphenylcarbonitrile was flat-on on gold colloid. The orientation of the adsorbate changed with change in concentration when adsorbed on copper colloids. The orientation was flat-on for higher concentrations and end-on for lower concentrations …

A novel synthesis of indoles having electron withdrawing substituents in the 3-position has been developed. Various 2-nitrostyrenes were prepared via Stille coupling of 2-tributyl stannyl-2-propenoic acid ethyl ester with substituted 2-bromo-l-nitrobenzenes. Alternatively, sequential vicarious nucleophilic substitution of substituted nitrobenzenes and Knoevenagel condensation with formaldehyde was used to prepare 2-nitrostyrenes. Palladium catalyzed N-heteroannulation of 2-nitrostyrenes yielded indoles in 61--99%. For example, reaction of a 0.5 M solution of 1,1-dimethylethyl 2-(1-nitro-2-napthyl)propenoate (65) in N,N-dimethylformamide with carbon monoxide (4 atm), in the presence of a catalytic amount of bis(dibenzylideneacetone)palladium(0) (6 mol %), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (6 mol %), and 1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate (12 mol %), gave …

The intent of this research is an exploratory examination of trends in child support enforcement before and after the implementation of The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) and to determine whether West Virginia is keeping up with the national average of child support enforcement. Using a time-trend analysis, this study examined five variables that constitute child support enforcement: total money distributed; paternities established; support orders established; absent parents located; and total caseload. Concern over scale is not new, and it is not restricted to geographers. Spatial and temporal scaling is a conceptual and methodological problem for all sciences using geographic information. This paper teases out issues of scale and ecological fallacy from the literature and discusses how these issues influence the applicability of an influential theoretical framework in stream ecology, the River Continuum Concept (RCC). The purpose of the present study was to examine relations between joint attention, language, maternal sensitivity, and temperament and the emergence of social referencing in infants and to closely observe variability in social referencing. Five infants, 7 months of age, were observed on a weekly basis for a period of four months. All five infants were engaging in social referencing behavior at the beginning of the study, which is much earlier than the literature indicates; therefore, the onset of the behavior was missed. As a decidedly American tradition, the long poem has become the premier literary endeavor for poets in the twentieth-century. Writers such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams have pursued the long poem, but under the auspices of the "modern epic." Three postmodern long poems---Kenneth Koch's Seasons on Earth, Edward Dom's Gunslinger, and James Merrill's The Changing Light at Sandover---illustrate a dramatic rupture with the texts of modernism by introducing comic situations and multi-voiced narration---situations described by Mikhail Bakhtin as "dialogism" and "carnival," receptively---into the canon of American long poems. The Allegheny woodrat occurs throughout the Appalachian Mountains, where it forms isolated colonies in rock outcrops, cliffs, and caves. Populations along the northern and western peripheries of the range have experienced drastic declines in the past 20--30 years. A paucity of ecological information is available for this species, particularly regarding the effects of anthropogenic disturbance. Furthermore, no information is available on population structure, gene flow, or relatedness among colonies. This study addressed the hypothesis that plants exposed to elevated N availability are more susceptible to drought and insect herbivory. I grew seedlings of gray birch (Betula populifolia), yellow birch (B. alleghaniensis), and red oak (Quercus rubra) for two years under varying levels of N and water availability in the field. Growth and biomass allocation were examined for the three species. Photosynthetic response was determined and feeding trials with gypsy moth larvae were conducted with both birch species. Applications of the electrochemical method, AC Voltammetry (ACV), and its modifications based upon monitoring ac current as a function of ac potential modulation are described. The first chapter involves investigating the effect of a short peptide, melittin, on both hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM) dielectric properties and HBM resistance to heterogeneous electron transfer. Error-prone DNA synthesis by retroviral reverse transcriptases (RTs) is a major contributor to variation in retroviral populations generating mutants that exhibit altered host tropisms, resistance to antiviral drugs, and the ability to escape the host's immune system. To identify structural elements of murine leukemia virus (MLV) RT important for fidelity and drug-resistance in vivo, we developed a D17-based encapsidating cell line (ANGIE P) which is designed to express the amphotropic MLV envelope. High mutation and recombination rates increase variation within a viral population and result in production of drug-resistant mutants and/or mutants that can escape a host immune response. Efforts toward greater inclusion of children with a range of presenting problems have resulted in increasingly more children with difficult behavior in non-specialized classrooms. Unfortunately, teachers report that they have not been trained adequately to work with children who exhibit extreme behaviors. It is important, therefore, that effective methods of training teachers are empirically investigated. In clinical settings, strategies for training parents of young children with disruptive behavior disorders have substantial empirical support. Rigid ceramic filter media are used for removing particulate matter from gas streams at high temperatures. As the particulate matter (dust cake) collects on the surface of the filter, the filtration pressure increases; to maintain an economical operation the dust cake must be removed periodically by back-pulse cleaning. Often the dust cake is not removed completely by the back-pulse pressure and the resulting patchy cleaning affects operation.;The thesis presents the results from a fine scale modeling of the removal of a layer of filter cake by a time dependent pressure pulse. Variability in the physical properties of coal/rock is a major source of uncertainty encountered around mining environment. It causes a considerable variation in strength/stress estimations of mining structures when the coal/rock properties are used. Therefore, the conventional safety factor method on stability assessment of mining structures is a special case of the more general probabilistic method in that it assumes the variability of coal/rock properties is zero.
