Effects Of A High Salt Diet On The Microcirculation In Normotensive Rats: The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species., Deborah M. Lenda

In normotensive rats fed high salt, arteriolar responsiveness to endothelium-dependent dilators is reduced due to suppression of local nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. In the first study we evaluated the possibility that an increase in microvascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) may account for this decrease in NO activity. Arcade arterioles in the spinotrapezius muscle of Sprague-Dawley rats fed either a low (0.45%, LS) or high (7%, HS) salt diet for 4–5 weeks were examined. Arteriolar responses to acetylcholine (ACh) were significantly reduced in the HS rats but could be returned to normal in the presence of the ROS scavengers superoxide dismutase …

This study analyzed the economic impacts of Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which was passed by Congress to eliminate workplace discrimination on the basis of disability. Specifically, the main objectives of this study were to answer five research questions and estimate an interaction model. The ADA was intended to spark an economic revolution by drastically increasing the employment rate of people with disabilities. Most of the voluntary sector activities are performed by special agencies known as non-governmental or private voluntary organizations (NGOs). Despite annual fluctuations in the exact percentages of adolescents in the United States who are involved with problem behaviors such as alcohol consumption, unprotected sexual intercourse, and illicit drug use over the past decade, a large proportion of youth have been introduced to, and continue to engage in these behaviors. In response, researchers and clinicians have continued their search for variables that are correlated with adolescent risk involvement including variables within the family context. The purpose of this study is to examine history and park meanings as constraints to visitation to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) by the African-American community. Thirty-six one-hour interviews were conducted in Denver, Colorado with African-American participants who resided in the city. In addition eleven, fifteen-minute interviews were conducted with African-Americans while visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. Over the course of the interviews, participants discussed their current and past relationship with Rocky Mountain National Park, the meanings they ascribed to the park, and their perceived constraints to park visitation. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a residential science research experience in changing participants' attitudes and understanding of the nature of science and their view of themselves as science researchers. Data from interviews, journal writings, classroom observations and two pre-post instruments were used in the evaluation plan. The incidence and prevalence of brain injury are on the rise, posing increasingly serious public health and economic threats. Often, brain injury leads to chronic physical and psychological challenges that require survivors and their families to adapt, to minimize disruption of their family relationships, social networks and quality of life. Polyamines are polycationic molecules that bind to negatively charged cellular constituents such as nucleic acids and proteins. The naturally occurring polyamines, putrescine (PUT), spermidine (SPD), and spermine (SPM), are present in millimolar levels in living cells and play important roles in growth and proliferation. Although polyamines perform vital functions in the cell, the molecular basis of the interaction of polyamines with biomolecules is not fully understood. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has been used to study the noncovalent associations involving biomolecules. Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) consist of four categories of syndromes known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and DBD Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). They are the most prevalent disorders in children and adolescents and the most common reason for referral to residential treatment centers (RTC). However, little research exists concerning RTCs efficacy in treating disruptive behavior. A group of 145 clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students interning at APA-accredited university counseling center sites completed the Supervision Self-efficacy Questionnaire (SSQ) to determine differences in supervisor self-efficacy among different supervision training groups (e.g. no doctoral supervision course, a didactic supervision course, or a didactic-practicum supervision course) during their doctoral training. The SSQ was developed for this study; it was adapted from The Supervisory Focus and Style Questionnaire (SFSQ) (Yager, Wilson, Brewer & Kinnetz, 1989), which is based on Bernard's (1997) discrimination model of supervision. This study examined the relationships between characteristics of faculty members in West Virginia colleges and their level of information technology (IT) implementation. A one-shot case study research design was used to investigate the connection between the faculty members' gender, age, years of experience, academic discipline, rank, amount of computer education, computer access, Internet access, job satisfaction, and their level of IT implementation. The specially designed Computer Usage Survey was mailed to a randomly selected sample of 95 faculty members; responses were received from 64 (67%) faculty members. The King's College controversy (1752-1756) was a battle for control of the first college in colonial New York. The historical experience of the province, from its founding by the Dutch until the 1750s, had generated an expectancy of religious freedom among the religious and ethnically diverse population. These people envisioned a non-sectarian college, but members of the Anglican church under the leadership of the Reverend Samuel Johnson (who would be the first president of the college) moved to exert control over the college. All conducting materials have a magnetoresistive response (MR). In bulk ferromagnets the MR is due to the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). AMR results from the spin-orbit interaction and s-d electron scattering. The change in resistance due to AMR is only a few percent. In contrast, the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) can be over 100%. The primary mechanism responsible for GMR is spin-dependent scattering. But where does this scattering occur? Some experiments show that the magnitude of the GMR depends on the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer, concluding that the scattering occurs in the bulk of the ferromagnet. Some American officials backed the invasion, because the PLO and Syria had obtained weapons from the Soviets. The United States also had a history of aiding Israel. Nevertheless, America attempted to make peace between Israel and its enemies. The United States sent marines to Lebanon twice. Believing the literature concerning Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 offers insufficient explanations of the construction of this piece, I developed a more complete picture of Bach’s compositional process by focusing on generative and formative procedures invoked in this work. Christoph Wolff is helpful in this regard. Illuminating commonly accepted fallacies concerning Bach’s compositional technique, Wolff points out that Vivaldi’s concertos, though widely believed to have shaped Bach’s notion of musical form, instead taught him about “musical thinking.” This language has specific meaning for Wolff, who quotes Johann Nicolaus Forkel, stating that the term refers to Ordung, Zusammenhang, and Verhältnis or …

The objective of this study was to determine the current status of trout processing in West Virginia and to determine break-even quantities of whole pounds of trout required for the two main processors in the state. Simulation models were developed for each firm specific to the characteristics of the plant. Scenarios were developed according to historical demand for products and product profit margins determined by the model. Results show that the smaller of the plants experiences regional prices, which are higher than what the industry acquires. The most realistic procedure for the determination of regulated diesel engine exhaust emissions is over-the-road testing. A Mobile Emissions Measurement System (MEMS) was developed by West Virginia University for over-the-road emissions testing. A component of this system is the flow rate measurement device, an Annubar, incorporated within a flow tube. To measure flow rate from this differential pressure device, a differential and absolute pressure transducer had to be selected. Experimentation was performed and it was determined that a Validyne P365 differential pressure transducer and an Omega PX-203 absolute transducer were optimal. The present study sought to explain the nature of the relationship between interviewers’ communication behavior (willingness to communicate, self-perceived communication competence, and socio-communicative style) and applicants’ perception of credibility (competence, trustworthiness, and goodwill), general attitude toward the interviewer and belief that the interviewer should continue interviewing for her/his company. Previous qualitative studies about the lived experience of persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have yielded common themes, such as becoming aware, seeking help, learning to live with the disease, and uncertainty (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul, 1995, 1997; Yoshida, 1996). Gaps identified included lack of personalized guidance and support from health care providers, gender differences, and the active role of the patient in managing the disease (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul 1995, 1997). This thesis documents my journey as a graduate student in ceramics. Refining my skills at the potter’s wheel and finding a clay body and glaze palette that suit my personal aesthetic have been the central focus of my graduate studies. My work is informed primarily by pots made during China’s Sung Dynasty, as well as from forms and textures I observe in the natural world. Environmental theology is a term used often by religious communities describing theological doctrines concerning the relationship of deity and ethical conduct to the environment. After an extensive literature search, an operational or declarative definition for environmental theology was not discovered. The objectives of this study were to establish an explicit and scholarly definition of environmental theology and introduce deoview as a descriptor associated with the term. People have and will continue to act according to their belief systems: this paper has value in understanding beliefs, ethics, and behavior of people and people groups.

Recent research advancement of moiré interferometry has incorporated phase shifting, a technique for better accuracy and easier digital image processing. However, moiré interferometry with phase shifting also revealed some sensitivity problems. Background noise associated with the topography of the specimen and optical effect produces rough and discontinuous displacement fields, which makes it difficult to obtain accurate strains and stresses. In this research, two alternate methods that improve the sensitivity of moiré interferometry, with and without phase shifting is developed.
