An Accurate Navier-Stokes Solver With An Application To Unsteady Flows., Jason Richard Smith
An Accurate Navier-Stokes Solver With An Application To Unsteady Flows., Jason Richard Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is becoming an increasingly important tool for engineering analysis. In CFD simulations obtaining grid independent solutions without excessive cost is desirable. Hence, there is a need to evaluate higher order accurate discretization schemes (both spatial and temporal). Moreover, many journals require at least second-order accuracy for publication. Also, there is a need to maximize the efficiency of Navier-Stokes solvers. Efficiency is both a function of how the flow field is calculated and how effectively the discretized equations are solved. All of these issues are important in the emerging field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) where very …
Assessment Of Adolescent Quality Of Life: Development And Preliminary Validation Of A Self-Report Measure., Leslie E. Spieth
Assessment Of Adolescent Quality Of Life: Development And Preliminary Validation Of A Self-Report Measure., Leslie E. Spieth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Assessing the impact of chronic illness on child and adolescent functioning has become increasingly important as mortality rates associated with chronic illness have decreased and survival rates have increased. With improvements in prognosis, greater emphasis has been placed on the assessment of acute and residual dysfunction caused by chronic illnesses and their treatment. The multiple dimensions of functioning and well-being are commonly referred to as "quality of life" (QOL). The assessment of patient QOL provides an important outcome measure that complements the physiological outcome measures which are typically obtained. Patient reports of QOL are particularly important as the dysfunction caused …

An Analysis Of Decision Styles As A Predictor Variable For Levels Of Creativity And/Or Orientations Toward Risk-Taking Of Knowledge Workers., Beth Ann Hill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem of this study was to determine if decision styles of knowledge workers could predict a level of creativity and/or an orientation toward risk of knowledge workers. A biographical survey and two self-scoring instruments were administered to each subject. The first instrument, Decision Style Inventory (DSI) by Alan Rowe and Richard Mason classified the subjects according to four basic decision styles: directive, analytical, conceptual and behavioral. The second instrument, The Creatrix Inventory (C&RT) by Richard Byrd measured the subject's level of creativity and orientation toward risk. There were two primary hypothesis: Hypothesis One examined the statistical strength of the …

Study Of The Effect Of Pulsating Combustion On The Calcination Reaction., Robert Edwin James
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Limestone calcination is an important process for the power generation industry. Calcination is the precursor to the sulfation process which is used for flue gas cleanup. This research studies the effects of a pulse combustion exhaust stream on the calcination of limestone. Results are presented for different types of limestone, injected at different exhaust stream conditions and locations in the exhaust stream. Certain conditions show promising results in the form of larger calcination percentages and larger surface areas. Results of pulsating cases were compared to results found using a steady combustor. A computer code modeling the pulse combustor was used …

The Use Of Fracture Mechanics To Predict The Stress Distribution In Coal Mine Pillars., James Michael Kramer
The Use Of Fracture Mechanics To Predict The Stress Distribution In Coal Mine Pillars., James Michael Kramer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Because coal resources are dwindling, it is necessary to mine seams that are more difficult to support structurally. The mining industry needs a mine layout that is safe, but designed to be competitive in the world market. Presented in this dissertation is a technique that predicts the stress distribution in coal mine pillars. This approach uses an analytic equation to predict stress and yield characteristics; so, in some respects, it is as accurate as numerical modeling. It uses fracture mechanics to model many structures including longwall gob, yield pillars, cribs, posts, longwall chocks and hydrostatic loads. It models the yield …
Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler
Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By definition, the study of emergent literacy must address the literacy development of children from "birth" to "conventional literacy." In actuality, studies of the literacy development of children between the ages of 2 and 4 have become common, while studies regarding literacy development of 1-year-olds is extremely limited and studies beginning at birth even fewer. Through this study, data regarding the language, reading, and writing behaviors of children from birth to three years is identified, consolidated, and confirmed. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What are the emergent literacy behaviors of a child from birth to three years? (2) …
The Development Of A Coaching Education Curriculum Framework Outlining The Learning Outcomes Coaches Are To Be Taught To Pursue Through Interscholastic Athletics., A Keith Dils
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coaches and administrators involved in athletics in the educational milieu proclaim that sport is an integral part of the educational process. The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains that athletics is "educational" (Jable, 1986). However, positive outcomes are not inevitable and in fact negative outcomes often occur. Because the mandates for the "educational" use of athletics consist of general and undefined values (e.g., collapsing the concept of sportsmanship into one undefined value) they are not conducive to making values development through sport an attainable goal (Wandzilak & Potter, 1986). Also, these mandates for the "educational" use of sport …

The Toroidal Helical Antenna (THA) is a newly patented antenna design, that has a small physical profile. The THA is a wire antenna which consists of one or more conductor helices wrapped about a toroidal core, usually with different pitch senses. The conductor helices are generally fed from one or more ports. An important class of THA is the Contrawound Toroidal Helical Antenna (CTHA) which has two helices with uniform pitches, opposite senses, and one feeding port. This dissertation presents the development and the implementation of a computer model for investigating the THA in order to optimize its performance by …
Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka
Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using a general, second-order, nonlocal formalism (Ganguli et al., 1985, 1988, 1994), we find that multiple Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) nonlocal eigenmodes with comparable growth rates are possible for a given set of parameters. This is in contrast to local modes and to most of the nonlocal modes, where the "the ground state" is usually most unstable. This finding suggests a possible explanation of the broadband and spiky spectrum of IEDD waves seen in laboratory experiments (Koepke et al., 1994, 1995; Amatucci et al., 1994; Carroll et al., 1996) and in Particle-In-Cell simulations (Nishikawa et al., 1988, 1990). We develop …

Silica-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation And Fibrosis: Toxicological Implications And Pharmacological Modulation., Michael Dimatteo
Silica-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation And Fibrosis: Toxicological Implications And Pharmacological Modulation., Michael Dimatteo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Human exposure to silica is of great occupational concern as it is marked by pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. The present work was performed to investigate, characterize, and modulate the responses that occur as a result of silica exposure. The intratracheal instillation of silica to rats results in pulmonary fibrosis but the cellular processes involved in the development of the chronic disease have not been well characterized. The hypothesis of this study was that pharmacological intervention early in the silica-induced inflammatory cascade will attenuate fibrosis development. The acute phase response to silica appears by 2 hours after instillation as evidenced by …

Procedure development for welding of thin section (1-4mm) aluminum, using Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (PGMAW) requires considerable understanding of the process physics. Selection of ideal pulse parameters for different joint designs is a non-trivial task. Several aspects of the process were studied, in order to have a better fundamental understanding of the process. Welding was conducted using 1.2 mm diameter 4047 aluminum electrode and argon shielding gas. An extensive collection of high speed pictures were taken over a wide range of pulse parameters using a laser shadowgraph setup to study the metal transfer behavior. Current, voltage and arc light …
Characterization Of Pulmonary Obstruction, Airway Inflammation, And Hyperreactivity In Relation To Pulmonary Dendritic Cells In A Guinea-Pig Model Of Asthma., Tracey Elaine Lawrence
Characterization Of Pulmonary Obstruction, Airway Inflammation, And Hyperreactivity In Relation To Pulmonary Dendritic Cells In A Guinea-Pig Model Of Asthma., Tracey Elaine Lawrence
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction and nonspecific airway hyperreactivity. Recent evidence suggests that inflammation is a critical feature in the pathogenesis of asthma. Central to the genesis of inflammation is the presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes. Dendritic cells (DC) are antigen presenting cells that activate T lymphocytes thought to play a critical role in stimulating antigen-induced airway inflammation and hyperreactivity in asthma. Even though the guinea pig is commonly used as an animal model of asthma, the role of pulmonary DC in the pathogenesis of asthma has not been investigated. Therefore, this study …

Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K
Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the novels Lady Oracle, The Handmaid's Tale, and Cat's Eye, I locate and name the sites of memory to show how Atwood's protagonists appropriate them as their loci of resistance. The localized sites though marginalized are within the realm of representation; however, the "space-offs," a term I borrow from film theory, are beyond "the ideological." In these sites women create and/or validate counter-discourses that enable them to set up "politics of oppositionality" and provide them with a distance necessary to question the hegemonic. The localization of the sites eventually leads to the body as site. I acknowledge the changing …
Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield
Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Published during the years that mark the English working-class movement known as Chartism, Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution (1837), Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge (1841), and Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1848) all present a picture of social revolt. The scenes depicted in these narratives (all of which are based upon historical events--respectively, the French Revolution, the 1780 Gordon Riots in London, and the Chartist rebellion after the failure of the first petition in 1839) strongly suggest that the act of social revolt stems not so much from radical strategies of political action as from the proliferation of a set of dangerous "passions" …
Soil-Structure-Fluid Interaction By Hybrid Fem-Bem., Chaojin Xu
Soil-Structure-Fluid Interaction By Hybrid Fem-Bem., Chaojin Xu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Soil-structure-fluid systems like U-lock, pipelines, and storage tanks are widely used in engineering practice. Relatively very few works can be found in the literature for the analysis of a soil-structure-fluid system subjected to externally applied loads or seismic excitations. The main purpose of this study is to develop a numerical method for the analysis of a soil-structure-fluid system. In the formulation of the presented numerical method, the flexibility of the thin plate structure is treated with a finite element formulation, while the difficulty in modeling the infinite extent of the soil is overcome by a boundary element formulation. The contained …
