Sporological Evidence On The Geological Age Of The Dunkard Strata In The Appalachian Basin., John Albert Clendening Jan 1970

Sporological Evidence On The Geological Age Of The Dunkard Strata In The Appalachian Basin., John Albert Clendening

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary purpose of the present study has been to establish palynological evidence on the geological age of the Dunkard strata, a subject of debate for at least 90 years. During this time the popular inclination has been to accept the age as Permian without serious question. The present study of fossil spores and pollen substantiates an Upper Pennsylvanian rather than a Permian age for the entire sequence of strata called the Dunkard Group.

Algebraic Models In Particle Physics., Elmer Douglas Dickens Jan 1970

Algebraic Models In Particle Physics., Elmer Douglas Dickens

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The problem of the mass spectrum of mesons is considered from the oint of view of algebraic models based on the Lie algebras of non-compact groups. After describing the group-theoretical approach to particle physics and difficulties encountered in applying it to the mass spectrum problems, especially the O'Raifeartaigh-Segal-Jost theorems, we consider the class of algebraic models recently set forth by A. Bohm. These models emply the Lie algebras of certain, physically interesting Lie groups, but go outside the Lie algebraic structure by allowing non-Lie algebraic "coupling" terms. The resulting associative algebraic models can be given a rigorous foundation as an …

An Analysis Of The Transformation Process Affecting The Stated Instructional Goals Of The West Virginia University School Of Nursing, Charles Joseph Staropoli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study will be to identify and explain the conceptual syndrome operating in the transformation by which the stated instructional goals, as established by the School of Nursing at West Virginia University, become the real instructional goals as pursued by the teaching staff of the School of Nursing. This study will not establish that these concepts caused the transformation, but will only identify the concepts through inductive analysis of the data. The identification of these concepts and their subsequent operationalization is the necessary first step if productive experimental research into the causality of goal transformation is to …

The purpose of this study was (1) to determine the effect, if any, that the race of the group leader(s) has on the improvement in intergroup attitude of racially mixed groups of elementary school children who participate in short-term group counseling or group contact activities; (2) to determine if racially mixed groups of elementary school children, who participate in short-term group counseling, make more favorable improvement in intergroup attitude than do groups of similar composition who engage in contact activities only.

Anxiety Control As A Function Of Instructional Modifications In Paired-Associate Learning., Jean Beverly Peltonen Jan 1969

Anxiety Control As A Function Of Instructional Modifications In Paired-Associate Learning., Jean Beverly Peltonen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to test the anxietyinhibiting effects of two modifications in traditional instructions for paired-associate learning. It will be assumed that effective anxiety-inhibition will be evidenced by a significant decline in the number of trials required for subjects to arrive at a common learning criterion. Tha two instructional modifications to be tested ara specifically: (1) Requiring subjects to delay responding aloud for an established number of list presentations (as opposed to permitting immediate responses), and (2) Informing subjects that capable individuals frequently experience considerable frustration before mastering the task with which they will be presented.

A Study Of The Perceptions That Parents, Community Leaders And Elementaryteachers Have Of The Role Of The Public Elementary School Teacher., Richard Paul Peltonen Jan 1969

A Study Of The Perceptions That Parents, Community Leaders And Elementaryteachers Have Of The Role Of The Public Elementary School Teacher., Richard Paul Peltonen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not three important groups of citizens of Morgantown, West Virginia, consisting of public elementary school teachers, parents, and community leaders, differed significantly from each other in respect to their prescriptive and descriptive perceptions of the position of the public elementary school teacher. This study tested the following hypotheses: 1. No significant differences will exist when the three populations are compared on the basis of the way they perceive the four prescriptive roles of the elementary school teacher. 2. There will be significant differences between the elementary school teachers and the …

The Mechanical Response Of Graphite, Alvin M. Strauss Jan 1968

The Mechanical Response Of Graphite, Alvin M. Strauss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A theory of rate Independent material response is developed In conjunction with a functional Integral approximation. The linear term of this approximation Is used to represent the mechanical behavior of reactor grade polycrystalline graphite. The constitutive relation ls then applied to the case of one dimensional cyclic straining. A general three dimensional rate independent constitutive theory for the mechanical behavior of graphite is also developed. This theory Is then analyzed with respect to the available cyclic loading data obtained from uniaxial experiments.
