To achieve these ends, the researcher engaged in survey research and open-ended interviews. The survey population came from the National Directory of Writing Centers. A 50% sample yielded 146 writing centers in all four settings. These centers received a survey instrument that examined seven areas of importance to writing centers: physical …

Retrovirus Variation And Rt Template Switching During Retroviral Reverse Transcription: Development Of Novel Retroviral Vectors For Gene Therapy., John George Julias Jan 1997

Retrovirus Variation And Rt Template Switching During Retroviral Reverse Transcription: Development Of Novel Retroviral Vectors For Gene Therapy., John George Julias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The low processivity of retroviral reverse transcriptase and the lack of exonucleolytic proofreading by retroviral reverse trascriptase contribute to the emergence of virus variants in infected hosts. A result of the low processivity of reverse transcriptase is the high frequency deletion of direct repeats in retroviral genomes and vectors. We determined that direct repeats of 383, 788, and 1333 base pairs delete at rates of 28-40, 85, and 93%, respectively, in one round of retroviral replication. Also, we demonstrated that the propensity of reverse transcriptase to switch templates could be used to reconstitute the neomycin resistance gene and delete the …

Computational Modelling Of Tube Production Process For Nickel-Base Alloys., Young Ryul Kim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerical modelling simulations of two dimensional tube extrusion and three dimensional tube pilgering reduction of nickel-base alloys were conducted using a commercial finite element code, DEFORM{dollar}\\sp{lcub}\\rm TM{rcub}{dollar}. Accuracy of the finite element modelling results was verified quantitatively by comparing solid extrusion simulation results with experimental data. An interface frictional coefficient was also examined and the best fit was selected for the simulation. As expected, heat loss of the extruded material was found to be significant due to temperature-dependent material properties of the alloy. A sequence of selected FEM tube extrusion simulations using DEFORM{dollar}\\sp{lcub}\\rm TM{rcub}{dollar} were carried out and based on …

Cell Cycle Regulation Of Redoxyendonuclease Activity In Human Neuroblastoma Cells., Deepika Walpita Jan 1997

Cell Cycle Regulation Of Redoxyendonuclease Activity In Human Neuroblastoma Cells., Deepika Walpita

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Redoxyendonuclease activity was detected in extracts of human neuroblastoma cells using a base-release assay specific for thymine glycol in DNA. The level of redoxyendonuclease activity was more than 2-fold higher in dividing cells compared to quiescent cells, suggesting that quiescent cells may have a reduced capacity to repair oxidative DNA base damages. Cells were synchronized by serum deprivation and then stimulated to enter the cell cycle by the addition of serum to determine enzyme activity at different stages of the cell cycle. The redoxyendonuclease activity was regulated in a biphasic manner with a peak in early G1 and a peak …

The Role Of Endothelin In Hexachloro-1,3-Butadiene-Induced Acute Renal Failure., Lara Kristen Dowland Jan 1997

The Role Of Endothelin In Hexachloro-1,3-Butadiene-Induced Acute Renal Failure., Lara Kristen Dowland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this research was to determine if endothelin is a mediator of hexachloro-1,3-butadiene (HCBD)-induced acute renal failure. The nephrotoxicity associated with HCBD is acute tubular necrosis (ATN). HCBD-induced ATN is characterized by a decrease in renal blood flow (RBF), mediating a decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), polyuria, glucosuria, proteinuria and natriuresis. These effects on the kidney are mimicked by the endogenous peptide endothelin. Endothelin is produced by many different cell types and is the most potent endogenous vasoconstrictor peptide identified to date. The renal vasculature is particularly sensitive to the vasoconstrictive action of endothelin. Endothelin causes …

A Unique Astrocyte Morphological Plasticity., Joanna B. Bobak Jan 1997

A Unique Astrocyte Morphological Plasticity., Joanna B. Bobak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Morphological plasticity of astrocytes has been hypothesized as vital to ongoing plasticity in the adult central nervous system. However, it has yet to be demonstrated directly that astrocytes are capable of gross morphological changes under non-pathological circumstances in the adult nervous system. In our studies, we have investigated this issue in the glial limitans associated with a well-known model of neuronal plasticity, the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus. The activity of the neuroendocrine cells comprising this region was stimulated in rats by substitution of 2% saline for drinking water for 2 or 9 days. Light and electron microscopic morphometry revealed that by …

A Prospective Self-Monitoring Investigation Of Naturally Occurring Reinforcement Of Exercise Behavior., Leighann Hock Forsyth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present investigation was based on operant theory. A prospective six-week self-monitoring design was utilized to examine naturally-occurring reinforcing and punishing effects of cardiovascular exercise in a college-aged sample of healthy women. The sample consisted of exercise initiators ({dollar}{dollar}6 months of regular exercise). Seven rewarding exercise effects emerged from factor analysis of the self-monitoring form (i.e., mood improvement, goal achievement, physical performance enhancement, exercise "high", praise from others, social affiliation, and appearance changes). Results indicated that both groups produced similar ratings for the exercise reward factors, but some factors were significantly more rewarding than others to the sample as a …

An Assessment Of Infants' Emotional Reactivity And Regulation In States Of Fatigue And Wakefulness., Christine Nelson Ross Jan 1997

An Assessment Of Infants' Emotional Reactivity And Regulation In States Of Fatigue And Wakefulness., Christine Nelson Ross

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the present study was to examine differences in infants' negative reactivity and use of regulation strategies during states of wakefulness and fatigue. Despite progress in building a theoretical foundation for the development of emotion regulation, studies designed to support current theories have only recently emerged in the literature. Moreover, researchers have not addressed how an infant's ability to manage negative reactivity changes based on current state of arousal. Five mildly stressful episodes were included in the testing session: colorful toys were taken from infants and sealed in a plastic jar, a remote-controlled toy approached infants, mothers left …

A Laboratory Study Of The Geochemistry Of Anoxic Limestone Drains., Patrick Lynn Sterner Jan 1997

A Laboratory Study Of The Geochemistry Of Anoxic Limestone Drains., Patrick Lynn Sterner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) through the use of anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) is a technology that has shown mixed success. Precipitation of solid phase materials, primarily Fe{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} and Al{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} hydroxides, inhibits limestone dissolution by presumably creating a barrier between the limestone surface and the AMD, which impedes neutralization at an optimum rate. A laboratory project was initiated to: monitor geochemical transformations of reactive species ({dollar}\\rm Al\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub},\\ Fe\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar}, and SO{dollar}\\sb4\\sp{lcub}2-{rcub}{dollar}), determine solid phases controlling precipitation reactions, and determine a kinetic model for limestone dissolution in ALDs. Laboratory ALDs were constructed and filled with graded, washed limestone. Three sampling ports …

Additionally, it was found that these two domains had three subdomains each. The "first stage" of empowerment subdomains were: (i) instrumental beliefs, (ii) outcome expectancy, and (iii) perceived self-efficacy; while the "second …

Intensive Supervised Probation And Institutional Placements For Adjudicated Youth: A Closer Look., Cleaster Marie Jackson Jan 1997

Intensive Supervised Probation And Institutional Placements For Adjudicated Youth: A Closer Look., Cleaster Marie Jackson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the alarming rate of school violence and teen crime public outcry demands that we look for immediate remedies to make schools and communities safe. One solution which has received public support is the current trend to solve this problem by building more juvenile facilities to house these youth. This short term fix, which has been referred to as an "out of sight out of mind mentality" creates other concerns such as loss of educational dollars to public schools and highlights the lack of commitment to provide effective programs to meet the needs of challenging students. The purpose of this …

Religiousness And Adjustment In Dementia Caregivers., George David Allen Jan 1997

Religiousness And Adjustment In Dementia Caregivers., George David Allen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It was the aim of this dissertation to determine if and how religiousness in family members caring for relatives suffering from dementia affects the mental health of family caregivers. To that end two theories were presented for testing in the form of path models. These theories were based on stress-process cognitive theory as adapted to the dementia caregiver situation. In this theory caregiver strain (mental distress) was thought to be mediated by cognitive appraisal, and appraisal to be influenced by contextual characteristics, personal and family resources, and stressors. Model one proposed that intrinsic religious orientation would mediate between the burdens …

Experimental Investigation Of The Iedd Instability., James Joseph Carroll

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Important aspects of the generation and propagation of Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) waves are reported. Some aspects confirm significant and detailed predictions from theory and some aspects reveal significant and unexpected behavior. The IEDD instability requires an inhomogeneous profile of plasma flow, which is created in these experiments by producing a radially localized radial electric field in the magnetized plasma column of the WVU Q machine. The {dollar}{lcub}\\bf E{rcub}x{lcub}\\bf B{rcub}{dollar} speed resulting from this electric field will consequently have a radial profile whose maximum velocity and radial dimension are controlled by adjusting the biases applied to the segmented disk end …

Physical, Chemical, And Microbial Analysis Of Domestic Wastewater Treated By Small Constructed Wetlands Designed For Individual Households., Keith R. Hench

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many small communities located in rural areas of the United States lack adequate domestic wastewater treatment plants. Constructed wetlands are being promoted as low-cost, low-maintenance systems for treatment of domestic wastewater in areas where standard septic tanks fail. In order to evaluate the efficacy of small constructed wetlands, 20 small-scale wetlands mesocosms (100 gal each) containing five plant treatments (no plants/control, Typha, Scirpus, and Juncus monocultures, and all three species combined) were planted into pea gravel at either 18 or 24 inches in depth. Each mesocosm received 5 gal/day of primary-treated domestic sewage. Mesocosms were monitored on a monthly basis …

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman Jan 1997

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Control is often a central concept in the explanation and treatment of physical spouse abuse. This study examined the usefulness of W. J. Doherty's and N. Colangelo's Family FIRO Model in explaining issues of control in physically aggressive couple relationships. The model is an adaptation of W. Schutz's Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation theory, which predicts the interpersonal fit in relationships from the satisfaction of the partners' intrapersonal inclusion, control, and affection needs. In further describing these needs, Doherty and colleagues place issues related to control in separate need areas, which could affect the initial focus of treatment. Thirty couples recruited …

Number of follicles {dollar}\\geq{dollar}7 mm in diameter and ovarian weight did not differ …

Male Adolescent Sex Offenders: The Relationship Between Early Victimization And Subsequent Offense Patterns., Mark Steven Metz Jan 1997

Male Adolescent Sex Offenders: The Relationship Between Early Victimization And Subsequent Offense Patterns., Mark Steven Metz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Twenty-three (23) incarcerated male adolescent sex offenders participated in structured interviews about their experiences as both victims and perpetrators of sexual assault. Data were analyzed for indications that some perpetrators use their offenses to reenact their victimization experiences in an effort to achieve mastery over their own sexual traumata. Data were also evaluated for evidence of differential victimization histories by molesters and rapists. Significant relationships were found between victimization and offense experiences, including the selection by offenders of victims who were the same race as the perpetrators against them, the recurrence in offenses of two types of sexual activity--simulated intercourse …

'Regional' Political Ecology And Underdevelopment In Appalachia: Case Studies From Two West Virginia Counties., James Todd Nesbitt Jan 1997

'Regional' Political Ecology And Underdevelopment In Appalachia: Case Studies From Two West Virginia Counties., James Todd Nesbitt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation analyzes the environmental history of Pendleton and Randolph Counties, West Virginia, as it relates to underdevelopment within the broader Appalachian region. Theories of political ecology and reconstructed regional geography are used to gain a better understanding of the intersection between cultural practice and human use of the natural environment. Specifically, three case study locales are utilized in this study to demonstrate local variability in natural resource issues within the Appalachian region. Political ecology and reconstructed regional geography are integrated to create a conceptually and contextually refined 'regional' political ecology which accounts for issues of geographic scale and alternative …

Monte Carlo Studies Of Instabilities In Solids Under External Strains And Stresses., Anatoli M. Peredera Jan 1997

Monte Carlo Studies Of Instabilities In Solids Under External Strains And Stresses., Anatoli M. Peredera

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We use dynamical Monte Carlo simulations to investigate instabilities of solids in the presence of externally applied stresses or strains. One of the instabilities is the classical Euler buckling instability of compressed rods. We address, for the first time, the dynamical aspects of this instability, that is, we study how an initially straight flexible chain reaches the final buckled configuration at long times. We find that this process has much in common with coarsening phenomena such as the spinodal decomposition or unstable mound growth in molecular beam epitaxy. Evolving chain's profile is like a wave with a wavelength which grows, …

Vincennes: From French Colonial Village To American Frontier Town, 1730-1820., Denise Marie Wilson Jan 1997

Vincennes: From French Colonial Village To American Frontier Town, 1730-1820., Denise Marie Wilson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores the social, political, and economic transitions which occurred among the French-Canadian inhabitants of Vincennes (in present-day southern Indiana) as the colonial French village became an American frontier town. Few studies in recent decades have explored the colonial history of the Middle West, and even fewer make the chronological transition from the Colonial Period to the Early National Period. This study investigates the changes experienced by the French when they became British subjects (in 1763) and American citizens (in 1783). It also contributes to a fuller understanding of midwestern history by showing how the normal process of pioneer …

Convection Patterns In Chemical Reactions., Yunqing Wu Jan 1997

Convection Patterns In Chemical Reactions., Yunqing Wu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

By coupling the standard reaction-diffusion equations with the hydrodynamic equations, we study the convection patterns in chemical reactions. We investigate the onset of convection and the transition of convection patterns induced by compositional density gradients of chemical wave propagations in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction and the iodate-arsenous acid reaction through direct numerical simulations. We find that in a vertical slab the chemical wave causes the onset of convection above a critical point. The convective flows deform the chemical concentration patterns as well as enhance chemical wave propagation speed. We observed several different convection patterns including a single convective roll as well …

Fifteen male nursing students from four baccalaureate nursing schools in West Virginia participated in this phenomenological study. The phenomena of interest was the lived experiences of male student nurses related to caring. Demographic data was obtained in the interview process. Semistructured interview questions were used in the individual interviews, which were all audiotaped. The methodology used was based on the Swanson-Kauffman and Schonwald method, which entailed the four step process of bracketing, analyzing, intuiting, and describing. Five themes were identified. The Primacy of Caring was the first theme. Characteristics of caring, the origins of caring, the lived experiences of caring …

Mathematical Analysis For The Hydrodynamic Model Of Semiconductors., Chen Zhu Jan 1997

Mathematical Analysis For The Hydrodynamic Model Of Semiconductors., Chen Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis we study two cases of the hydrodynamic model of semiconductors: the nonisentropic case for one species and the isentropic case for two species. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the asymptotic stability of the steady state solutions for these two cases. First we show the existence of a one-parameter family of steady state solutions. Each steady state solution is uniquely determined by the momentum. Then, we prove that every steady state solution is asymptotically stable. Namely, if the initial data is "close" to a given steady state solution, then the dynamic solution will asymptotically approaches …

A Signal Detection Analysis Of Body Image Distortion Among Women With Bulimia Nervosa., Lynda Anne Szymanski Jan 1997

A Signal Detection Analysis Of Body Image Distortion Among Women With Bulimia Nervosa., Lynda Anne Szymanski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The clinical conceptualization of body-image distortion among persons with eating disorders typically emphasizes sensory disturbances and de-emphasizes nonsensory, environmental variables. The present study examined body-size misperceptions using a signal detection paradigm in 20 women with bulimia and 20 women without present symptomology or history of an eating disorder. First, subjects estimated their body sizes using a video distortion camera. Second, each subject judged how similar or dissimilar each of 192 distorted and undistorted images was to her actual body size using a 5-point rating scale. The second phase of the study was repeated with one-half of the subjects given instructions …
