Feasibility Of Applying Motion Magnification In Subsurface Defect Detection For Concrete And Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Specimens, Nagavardhani Malineni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Irrespective of size and complexity, every civil infrastructure needs certain scrutiny regarding its structural health to ensure its serviceability during its lifetime. In olden times such scrutiny was done with the aid of destructive testing methods using sensors that required cumbersome and expensive installations and led to the destruction of at least part of the tested specimen. However, in recent times, many non-destructive methods, such as acoustic emission testing, electromagnetic testing, and laser testing methods have emerged, leaving the specified tested specimen undisturbed. With the advancement in sensor technology like motion magnification and with the help of access to high-speed …
Investigating The Role Of Nudt7-Mediated Peroxisomal Coa Degradation In The Regulation Of Hepatic Coa Levels And Lipid Metabolism, Schuyler Dan Adams Vickers
Investigating The Role Of Nudt7-Mediated Peroxisomal Coa Degradation In The Regulation Of Hepatic Coa Levels And Lipid Metabolism, Schuyler Dan Adams Vickers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coenzyme A (CoA) is a crucial cofactor required to support many essential metabolic processes, including fatty acid oxidation and synthesis, the TCA cycle, and bile acid synthesis. In order to support the proper functioning of these pathways, CoA levels within the cell must be properly regulated. The regulation of CoA levels is achieved through a balance between CoA synthesis and CoA degradation. While the regulation of CoA synthesis has been extensively characterized, the degradation of CoA has received less attention. As such, the contribution of CoA degradation to the regulation of metabolism is poorly understood. NUDT7 is a CoA-specific Nudix …

Nature Based Interventions For Human Health And Wellbeing, Samantha I. Moyers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background. Nature exposure is beneficial to human health and wellbeing, but the evidence base for nature-based interventions (NBI) is still developing. Heterogeneous naming conventions, study designs, and intervention contexts create difficulty in accessing and assessing the evidence for such programming. While NBI have been utilized in a wide array of human populations, no interventions have been reported among clinical health professions students. Aims. The objectives of this dissertation project were to review the existing body of NBI literature exploring health and wellbeing outcomes, and to conduct a feasibility trial of forest bathing, a type of NBI, among clinical students. Specifically, …

The Development Of A New Pertussis Booster Formulation Via The Implementation Of New Adjuvants And Utilization Of Alternate Routes Of Administration, Megan Ashley Dejong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a respiratory disease caused by airborne transmission of the Gram-negative bacterium, Bordetella pertussis. Prior to the development of the first pertussis vaccines (whole cell (wP) vaccines), the incidence of pertussis was in the hundreds of thousands of cases per year, which led to the death of many children, as the infection is most severe in younger populations. Thankfully, the wP formulation resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of annual pertussis cases, nearly eradicating the disease. However, as wP contained the whole B. pertussis bacterium (and its lipooligosaccharide (LOS)), reactogenicity issues became apparent, leading …
Cancer Promoting Neutrophil Extracellular Traps In The Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Tumor Microenvironment, Abby Ivey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a very aggressive disease with an overall survival rate at 12%. This poor outcome at diagnosis is in part due to the lack of effective treatment options. The aggressive disease and unique tumor microenvironment generated during disease initiation and progression has contributed to the lack of effective therapeutic options. Chemotherapy options have not improved overall survival substantially, the effectiveness of radiation therapy remains controversial, and immunotherapies provide little to no benefit when added to current standards of care. Thus, there is a critical need for new therapeutics that can either target PDAC alone or be added …

Circadian rhythms are intrinsic biological processes that fluctuate in function with a period of approximately 24 hours. These rhythms are precisely synchronized to the 24- hour day of the Earth by external rhythmic signaling cues. Solar light-dark cycles are the most potent environmental signaling cue for terrestrial organisms to align internal rhythms with the external day. Proper alignment and synchrony of internal circadian rhythms with external environmental rhythms are essential for health and optimal biological function.
The modern human environment on Earth is no longer …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus) (Rosales: Rhamnaceae) is an invasive European shrub that threatens to displace native vegetation in roadsides and disturbed forests in North America due to its lack of natural enemies, long leaf-out periods, and its ability to survive in a multitude of soil conditions. While well understood in its native range, information regarding F. alnus in North America is lacking. Currently, the management of this invasive shrub relies on an understanding of where it can be found and thus where treatments should be applied. This research investigated the spatial distribution patterns of F. alnus and profiled …

Role Of Cytochrome P450-Epoxygenases And Adenosine A2a Receptor In The Modulation Of Vascular Response, Stephanie Onyeka Agba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and endothelial dysfunction is a major precursor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Arachidonic acids in the vascular endothelial membrane are metabolized by the cytochrome P450-epoxygenases (CYP-2Js and 2Cs) to produce epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EETs). These anti-inflammatory metabolites or oxylipins have been shown to be cardio-protective against ischemic/reperfusion injury and mediate vasodilation through hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells. However, the enzyme called soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), mainly hydrolyzes EETs to its inactive form (DHETs) and an increase in sEH upregulates Angiotensin-II type1-receptor and facilitates endothelial dysfunction.
we previously showed vascular …

A Comparison Of Fish Health Indices Applied To Freshwater Species Of The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Josiah B. Jensen
A Comparison Of Fish Health Indices Applied To Freshwater Species Of The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Josiah B. Jensen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fish kills, increased disease prevalence, and endocrine disruption have been observed in multiple freshwater fish populations of the Chesapeake Bay watershed (CBW). Some of these health issues occur in conjunction with declining abundance. A combination of multiple stressors is believed to be weakening sensitive fish species in non-tidal regions of the CBW. Fish health indices such as Deformity, Erosion, Lesion, and Tumor counts (DELTs), and the Health Assessment Index (HAI) are simple tools designed to evaluate the general health of fish populations. Both indices could be widely applied in the watershed because they require limited training and equipment. However, their …

Chronic lower back pain (CLBP) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with an estimated direct cost of over 600 billion dollars in the US alone. CLBP profoundly impacts the patient, their support team, and the healthcare system. Widespread changes to the patient's well-being, including mental health, are seen in CLBP and contribute to a downward spiral that often leads to disability. Chronic pain is poorly understood and is difficult to treat because of its subjective nature. Recent improvements in pain assessment in the clinic and in biomedical research have had a profoundly impacted the field. More than …
Forage Grass Growth Habit And Allelopathy In Birdsfoot Trefoil Germination And Establishment, Nathan El Blake
Forage Grass Growth Habit And Allelopathy In Birdsfoot Trefoil Germination And Establishment, Nathan El Blake
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) (BFT) is a high quality, tanniniferous forage legume that has been shown to mitigate gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in sheep. Reliable establishment of birdsfoot trefoil in existing pastures is difficult due to BFT’s poor seedling vigor, susceptibility to crown and root rot, and, perhaps chiefly, competition from other pasture plants. Most existing pastures in the Northeastern United States are primarily composed of cool-season grasses, many of which can be highly competitive. A common form of interplant competition is allelopathy, which occurs when secondary metabolites produced by a plant inhibit a necessary growth process of …

Sense And Sensitivity: Spatial Structure Of Conspecific Signals During Social Interaction, Keshav Ramachandra
Sense And Sensitivity: Spatial Structure Of Conspecific Signals During Social Interaction, Keshav Ramachandra
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Organisms rely on sensory systems to gather information about their environment. Localizing the source of a signal is key in guiding the behavior of the animal successfully. Localization mechanisms must cope with the challenges of representing the spatial information of weak, noisy signals. In this dissertation, I investigate the spatial dynamics of natural stimuli and explore how the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish encodes these realistic spatial signals. To do so In Chapter 2, I develop a model that examines the strength of the signal as it reaches the sensory array and simulates the responses of the receptors. The …
Development And Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Jason Kang
Development And Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Jason Kang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a global crisis, posing significant challenges to the treatment and management of infectious diseases. The escalating prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has made many antimicrobial therapies ineffective, necessitating the development of alternative strategies to combat microbial infections. The rise of multidrug-resistant pathogens, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens, further exacerbates this problem, as these pathogens exhibit high levels of resistance to multiple antibiotics and cause severe infections in vulnerable populations. In response to the need for alternative therapeutic approaches, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have emerged as promising candidates for combating AMR. In this work, we …

Imitation Learning For Swarm Control Using Variational Inference, Hafeez Olafisayo Jimoh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Swarms are groups of robots that can coordinate, cooperate, and communicate to achieve tasks that may be impossible for a single robot. These systems exhibit complex dynamical behavior, similar to those observed in physics, neuroscience, finance, biology, social and communication networks, etc. For instance, in Biology, schools of fish, swarm of bacteria, colony of termites exhibit flocking behavior to achieve simple and complex tasks. Modeling the dynamics of flocking in animals is challenging as we usually do not have full knowledge of the dynamics of the system and how individual agent interact. The environment of swarms is also very noisy …
Spatial Variability In Above Ground Carbon Within An Appalachian Forest, Megan A. Ponczek
Spatial Variability In Above Ground Carbon Within An Appalachian Forest, Megan A. Ponczek
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Forests have long been recognized for their provision of air and water quality ecosystem services to society; but more recently, they have become valuable to the carbon credit markets used as a tool for mitigating climate change. Quantifying above ground carbon storage in forest ecosystems is essential for these carbon credit markets and can also provide insight into factors that control the spatial distribution of carbon in forests. The goal of this study is to assess the degree to which three factors: topography, tree species, and legacies of logging, impact the spatial variability in above ground carbon within a 400x500m …
Spatial Processing Of Conspecific Signals In Weakly Electric Fish: From Sensory Image To Neural Population Coding, Oak Everette Milam
Spatial Processing Of Conspecific Signals In Weakly Electric Fish: From Sensory Image To Neural Population Coding, Oak Everette Milam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation, I examine how an animal’s nervous system encodes spatially realistic conspecific signals in their environment and how the encoding mechanisms support behavioral sensitivity. I begin by modeling changes in the electrosensory signals exchanged by weakly electric fish in a social context. During this behavior, I estimate how the spatial structure of conspecific stimuli influences sensory responses at the electroreceptive periphery. I then quantify how space is represented in the hindbrain, specifically in the primary sensory area called the electrosensory lateral line lobe. I show that behavioral sensitivity is influenced by the heterogeneous properties of the pyramidal cell …

Biopolymers, such as proteins and nucleic acids, serve important functions dictated by their structural folding. Information excavated from the intricate structural arrangements of biopolymers have been proved to be vital in diagnosing diseases, unveiling disease mechanisms, and developing new drugs. A continuous effort has been put to improve the characterization techniques of these biomolecules so that more precision can be achieved in terms of detailing their structure-function relationship. Mass spectrometry (MS) is one such technique that has become very relevant for structural biology with the emergence of soft ionization techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI). A prerequisite to the application …
Intersectional Microaggressions And Disordered Eating In Asian American Women, Spring Szoka
Intersectional Microaggressions And Disordered Eating In Asian American Women, Spring Szoka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Disordered eating in college-age women is well-documented. Less is known about minoritized populations and disordered eating for college-age women, especially Asian American women. As Asian Americans are often subjected to the “model minority” myth, less research has been dedicated to understanding disordered eating for this population. Small, everyday slights motivated by the model minority myth and other racial stereotypes are known as microaggressions. Asian American women hold an intersectional identity that places them at risk for experiencing microaggressions from their identity as both a woman and as an Asian American. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between …

Chemotherapy-Induced Pdl-1 Expression In Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Promotes Chemoresistance In Nsclc, Gayathri Heenatigala Palliyage
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A cure for cancer is out of reach for most patients due to chemoresistance. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), one of the most abundant types of stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment, are known to provide functional and structural support for tumor progression. These cells also play a role in cancer chemoresistance, but a detailed understanding of the process, particularly in chemoresistant lung cancer, is lacking. In this study, we investigated programmed death-ligand 1 (PDL-1) as a potential biomarker for CAF-induced chemoresistance and evaluated its role and underlying mechanisms of chemoresistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We demonstrated that chemotherapy-stimulated CAFs …
