Wood is prone to deterioration that reduces its load bearing capabilities. Periodically, older wooden members need to be inspected to ensure the strength and stability of the structure. Historically these inspection methods have consisted of visual inspections lacking scientific basis.;Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods were investigated by this research for the possibility of evaluating modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of built-in wooden members. Methods included stress wave timing for dynamic MOE determination and screw withdrawal force (SWF) for MOR and density prediction. This dissertation investigates the theory and practice of editing as it moves into the electronic era. As an example of the type of material which scholars may now be interested in working with, it centers on an edition of a lecture given by the West Virginia artist-journalist David Hunter Strother on John Brown nine years after the insurrection at Harper's Ferry. This material was chosen because it was locally available, unpublished, both locally and nationally important, and of the dimension which would have formerly placed it on the margin of paper publication. The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy Expectations And Career-Choice., Geraldine January

Analysis of responses from (N = 64) undergraduate students enrolled in Learning Strategies and Orientation courses on the Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy scale and the Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale, revealed that participants who selected male-dominated careers scored higher on the goal selection subscale compared to participants in the female-dominated group. Similar results were observed for career decision-making, self-efficacy and major status. As predicted, the scores for males on the OSES indicated that males reported equally higher scores for male and female-dominated occupations, whereas females reported higher self-efficacy for female-dominated occupations compared to male-dominated occupations.

An experiment was conducted involving 360 large white turkeys of mixed sex, raised in floor pens. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the effect of dietary lactose on the performance of turkeys and to determine the optimum amount of lactose inclusion in the diet. There were six diets and three replicates of each diet. The diets contained 0%, (commercial and control) 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 4% lactose and were randomly assigned to 18 pens with 20 birds per pen. The Interpretive Development Program (IDP) of the National Park Service (NPS) develops and maintains the national standards for interpretation by providing professional development opportunities and administrating a peer review certification process of interpretive products. This study explores the little-understood phenomena of how opportunities for intellectual and emotional connections between the resource and the visitor are created by NPS interpreters. It has been almost forty years since the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act and the establishment of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Forty years later, we still have not seen a wilderness that is not a surface environment. There exist neither subterranean nor marine wilderness areas. Efforts on behalf of cave wilderness have focused on the 1964 Wilderness Act legal definition of wilderness. Perhaps what is required is a different concept for the establishment of cave wilderness. Little has been written concerning the effects of student testing for participation in gifted programs. Moreover, few studies have sought to apply a sociological perspective to the understanding of student testing. This research examines the academic achievement and selfconcept of high-achieving students in two West Virginia counties who were targeted for testing for the gifted program. Three subgroups are examined; 1) students tested for gifted programs and accepted; 2) students tested for the gifted program who were not accepted; and 3) students who were not tested but meet the criteria for initial screening. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relative success of mitigation wetlands in West Virginia in supporting vegetation, invertebrate, and wildlife communities. Eleven mitigation wetlands were compared to 4 naturally occurring reference wetlands. For all vegetation species sampled, species richness (no. species/quadrat; P = 0.035), evenness (P = 0.033), and diversity (P = 0.025) were higher in mitigation than reference wetlands. Mean weighted averages per quadrat were similar between mitigation and reference wetlands (P = 0.242). Differences in vegetation composition between wetland types were reflected through ordination using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Both mitigation and natural wetlands met …

The Impact Of Caloric Preloading On Attempts At Food- And Eating-Related Thought Suppression In Restrained And Unrestrained Eaters., Cara Frances O'Connell

The current study examined the relation between dietary restraint and caloric preload in thought suppression attempts. The impact of restraint status, suppression instructions, and a high calorie preload were examined among a sample of 64 college females classified as either restrained or unrestrained eaters. Participants engaged in a 60-minute laboratory activity; half of the participants were preloaded and all participants were randomly assigned to a food- and eatingrelated thought suppression condition or an expression control group. Difficulty of suppression and frequency of foods and eating-related thoughts were examined. Restrained participants instructed to suppress demonstrated significantly more food- and eating-related thoughts. …

This study examined the relation between parental behaviors (i.e., amount of interaction, positive behavior, aversive behavior, controlling behavior), child abuse potential (as measured by the Child Abuse Potential Inventory), documented history of child physical abuse, and demographic variables (e.g., socioeconomic status) among mothers of children with disruptive behavior problems. Results indicated that socio-economic status and child abuse potential were significant predictors of substantiated history of abuse. Further, only the presence of a documented history of abuse was significantly related to child abuse potential scores. Interactions of different nematodes with various biological control agents were examined in field and in vitro studies. In a field experiment conducted to determine effects of the bacterial biocontrol agent, Kodiakâ (Bacillus subtilis GBO3), on soil plant parasitic, predatory and free-living nematodes, no significant differences were found in the abundance of any nematode group among treated and untreated plots. Chemotaxis assays developed to evaluate the effects of Kodiakâ on the movement of the plant parasitic nematode Pratylenchus scribneri Steiner and the predatory nematode Clarkus papillatus Bastian detected no nematicidal or taxis effects. Neotyphodium spp. are members of the fungal family Clavicipitaceae that grow endophytically within several important forage grasses, imparting benefits to the host grass. Several species produce toxic ergopeptines that are thought to adversely affect mammalian health. Inclusion of 1% agar in endophyte-infected seed diets was found to ameliorate some of the consequences of feeding endophyte-infected seeds to mice. Based upon feeding preferences of rabbits and mice, it seems that ergot alkaloids are not critical factors for deterring feeding on endophyte-infected plants by these animals, but the presence of the fungus appeared to deter rabbits. This study is a longitudinal study of violence, sexual references, and drug use in popular rap music lyrics. The top ten rap songs were gathered from 1994 through 2002 and analyzed. Results indicated that though there is violence in popular rap music it is not predominate. It was also found that when violence is present it is most often without consequences or rationale. Further, it was found that popular rap music contained more sexual references than violence. Also, when sexual references were present it was gratuitously, without reference to relationships. Ice Mountain is an algific talus slope located in Hampshire County, West Virginia, protected for its status as a biological refugium. Both the origin of the slope and the mechanism by which cold air is produced from the base of the slope have remained mysteries to local residents and tourists for many years. This research effort takes a scientific approach to exploring the mysteries of Ice Mountain. Workers exposed to occupational irritants often develop symptoms of airway inflammation by unknown mechanisms. In laboratory animals, occupational irritants activate sensory nerves located in airway walls. Sensory nerves respond by increasing neuropeptide production. The neuropeptide, substance P (SP), is produced in trigeminal ganglia (TG) cell bodies and released from nasal mucosa nerve endings. Neurogenic inflammation results from the release of neuropeptides and is characterized by vasodilation, plasma extravasation, mucous secretion and neutrophil chemotaxis. Riparian zones play a major role in the structure and function of headwater stream ecosystems. Inputs of leaf litter from riparian zones are the primary energy source for secondary production in these streams and inputs of large woody debris (LWD) help shape stream habitat. Riparian zones of Appalachian streams were degraded by past timber harvest activities. Streamside management zones (SMZs) now protect the riparian zone by limiting timber harvest activities near streams. We used hydroacoustics to seasonally estimate regional density and combined river region total abundance of larvae, juvenile, and adult bay anchovy in the Hudson River Estuary from May 1996 through September 1998. The first section of this work addressed the relationship between apoptotic and necrotic cell death and their role in inflammatory lung injury induced by endotoxin. Pulmonary administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into the lung of mice caused a time-dependent increase in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α and inflammatory cell influx in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids. Control mice showed only resident alveolar macrophages with no apoptosis as determined by terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) and histone-bound DNA fragmentation assays. Pulmonary fibrosis due to acute or chronic occupational exposures is the leading cause of work-related illness in the U.S. according to the 2002 report by the American Lung Association. Asbestosis and silicosis are well described lung diseases that result from asbestos fiber or crystalline silica inhalation, respectively. Thermolysis of the benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides provides easy access to a variety of pyrido[1′,2′:1,2]pyrimido[4,5- b]indoles and related heteroaromatic compounds. Methylation of some of these new compounds with methyl iodide occurs exclusively at the site of the indolo nitrogen. The simplicity of the reaction sequence makes the process especially attractive for the synthesis of novel heteroaromatic compounds as potential DNA-intercalating agents. The formation of pyrimido[6 ′,1′:2,3]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles was unexpected and likely involved a novel [2+2] cycloaddition pathway of the benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides. Similarly, several novel heteroaromatics structurally related to ellipticine alkaloids are synthesized by thermolysis of the pyridannulated enyne-carbodiimides. Little is known about nest tree use of the endangered Virginia northern flying squirrel. I compared characteristics of nest trees used by Virginia northern flying squirrels with randomly selected trees during summer and fall of 2000 and 2001. I tracked 13 squirrels to 59 nest trees. Sixty-nine percent of the nests were in cavities and 31% were leaf nests. Yellow birch, black birch and American beech were selected for nest trees more than expected. Nest trees were in larger and taller trees than trees in the surrounding area. There were a significant number of trees located near skidder and hiking …

The stated research problem of this study was to examine the relationship between motivational factors and the degree to which the higher education faculty integrate CMC tools into their courses. The study population and sample involved higher education faculty teaching in science departments at one public university and three public colleges in the state of West Virginia (N = 153). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (EN-DOR) have been used to identify and characterize point defects in nonlinear optical crystals of lithium triborate (LiB3O5) and beta barium borate (β-BaB2O4). Two similar hole centers, one (Hole Center A) stable below approximately 130 K and the other one (Hole Center B) stable below approximately 170 K, were observed in LiB3O 5. For both centers, there is a major hyperfine interaction with only one 11B nucleus. The g matrix and the 11B hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole matrices have been determined for each hole center. This study traces the flowering of Western scientific exploration during the fifteen years following the Civil War. During these years, the empirical modes of perception and representation associated with Western exploration gained growing cultural authority and increasingly came to frame discussions of Western policy. At the same time, the systematic exploration of the West revealed the region in new and sometimes startling ways, in some cases prompting far-reaching revisions in the nation's self-perception.
