A portable Transparent Indenter Measurement (TIM) instrument that combines Instrumented Indentation Testing characteristics with optical microscopy through a transparent half ball indenter has been developed. The TIM instrument can provide the following experimental data: (a) the load applied as the indenter penetrates the specimen, (b) the displacement of the piezoelectric tip, and (c) the indented area. All these data are used to obtain the material stress-strain curve, through the determination of the elastic modulus, yield strength, and strain hardening exponent.;Using the TIM instrument and based on Hertz elastic contact theory, a new method to obtain material elastic modulus is developed. …

Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Production Induced By Peptidoglycan-Polysaccharide In Early Pregnant Ewes, Gabrielle Marie Rogers

Peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS), cell wall component of gram-positive bacteria, was used to intoxicate sheep to study mastitis-related reproductive failure, mediated by TNF-alpha. Estrus was synchronized in ten adult Suffolk ewes. Four days after mating (Day 0) the jugular and posterior vena cava (saphenous vein) were catheterized. On Day 5, ewes were assigned randomly to either: control group (n = 4, 0.9% NaCl), or PG-PS group (n = 6, 30 mug/kg BW, i.v.). Plasma samples were collected from both jugular and saphenous vein catheters every 15 minutes for 6 hours. Radioimmunoassay quantified concentrations of TNF-alpha. Adolescent Religiosity And Conformity To Parents: Is Sex A Moderator?, Rebecca Kim Summers

This study examines relations between adolescent reports of conformity to their parents and religiosity and if these are moderated by the sex of the adolescent and parent. Self-report data was collected from 121 ninth and tenth graders enrolled in three non-metropolitan high schools. Religiosity was measured by Schumm et al.'s (1991) modified version of Gorsuch and Venable's (1983) scales. Conformity to Parents was assessed using Peterson's (Peterson, Rollins, & Thomas, 1985) Conformity to Parents scales. Four regressions were used. This thesis examined newspapers’ coverage of two female politicians. One is U.S. Senator and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. The newspaper is The Post-Standard (Syracuse, NY). The other is Hsiu-Lien Lu, the first female vice president of Taiwan. The newspaper is China Times (Taiwan). The research analyzed articles in these two newspapers to determine whether the terms associated with Clinton and Lu were gender neutral, feminist or patriarchal. The study compares how media represent female politicians in the two societies, and further illustrates the similarities and differences in the American and Taiwanese societies. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting ones, is tightly controlled under physiological conditions, and deregulated angiogenesis contributes to many pathological situations. This study investigates the role of PI3K/Akt pathway in both physiological and pathological angiogenesis. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) is an endothelial specific growth factor that plays a critical role in vessel maturation and stabilization during angiogenesis. We found that Ang1 potently induced p70S6K1 activation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). p70S6K1 is a downstream target of PI3K, but its role in angiogenesis has not be defined. Examining Problem-Solving Interpretations: The Role Of Age, Sex, And Femininity, Jennifer A. Flinn

The current study examined age and sex differences in communal interpretations (statements focusing on the needs of others), and whether participants' femininity mediated these differences. One hundred and ninety six participants, 121 younger adults (M=19.26, SD=131: 53 M, 68 F) and 75 older adults (M=73.74, SD=7.65: 36 M, 39 F), were given a vignette regarding a hypothetical job relocation problem that involved either a male or female protagonist. To assess interpretations, participants were asked to indicate all the issues to be considered. The degree to which interpretations reflected communal concerns was coded. Thermolysis of the benzannulated enyne-allenes provides an efficient pathway to a variety of novel helical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are represented by a remarkably beautiful diindenophenanthrene with four congested phenyl substituents. For example, its X-ray structure shows that the four phenyl substituents are essentially parallel to one another but are virtually perpendicular to the helical axis of the diindenophenanthrene ring system. Study I evaluated the possibility that a HS diet can reduce the arteriolar response to muscle contraction through reduced nitric oxide (NO) availability and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity. Spinotrapezius muscle arterioles were examined in rats fed a normal salt (NS; 0.45%) or high salt (HS; 4%) diets. Arteriolar diameter responses to an increase in metabolic demand were significantly less in HS rats and these HS rats exhibited increased presence of arteriolar ROS. The attenuated responses to muscle contraction in HS rats were not restored in the presence of ROS scavengers, and inhibition of NO synthesis had no effect …

Rising levels of obesity continue to challenge physical educators to engage their students in activities sufficiently vigorous to accrue health-related benefits. Physically active video games are now recognized as a way to enhance physical activity levels in children. A school-based intervention in fifth- and sixth-grade participants (N=33) compared six lessons each of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), volleyball, and an exercise video (Tae-Bo) according to the following dependent variables: heart rate, step count, active time, rate of perceived exertion, enjoyment, and self-efficacy. Lesbian and gay (LG) adults must do this from within a context of heterosexist discrimination, which can negatively influence multiple aspects of psychological well-being. Implementation of modern fishing techniques and hatchery technologies necessitates use of genetics in management of fishery stocks. Genetic analysis of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, will assist development of superior strains of a valuable aquacultured species. This study was to (1) develop polymorphic microsatellite markers to examine for variation among rainbow trout strains and develop an identification panel of microsatellites to distinguish individual strains, and (2) to identify novel genes and estimate relative gene expression profiles (expressed sequence tags from rainbow trout liver, intestine, kidney, and ovary non-normalized libraries). The overall intent of this study is to illustrate how GIS and crime mapping methods can be applied to forensic evidence to better understand and comprehend spatial patterns that exist in these data. This study bridges common crime mapping principles such as hot spot mapping, exploratory data analysis, and spatial statistics to spatial forensic evidence investigation. In particular, forensic shoeprint evidence is examined and spatial relationships are analyzed using both exploratory and confirmatory statistical analysis. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is the rate-limiting enzyme of pentose phosphate pathway and provides NADPH for de novo fatty acid biosynthesis. For the later reason, G6PD is known as a lipogenic enzyme. Insulin induces expression of G6PD mRNA via activating the PI3 kinase pathway in primary rat hepatocytes. Addition of arachidonic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid, in the medium interferes with the PI3 kinase pathway, and thus inhibits the insulin-mediated induction of G6PD. Arachidonic acid in the presence of insulin induces p38 MAP kinase pathway over insulin treatment alone. Activation of p38 MAP kinase by arachidonic acid interferes with the insulin …

Due to the imbalance of positive and negative angiogenic regulation, tumor blood vessels are usually leaky and chaotic which create accessible avenue for tumor metastasis. The purpose of this study was to compare Resilon™ density produced by different filling techniques. Cold lateral condensation technique (CLC) was compared to continuous wave of condensation technique (CWC) under varying temperature settings and depth of plugger penetration. Seventy acrylic blocks were instrumented, weighed and distributed into seven groups. Group 1 was obturated with CLC. Groups 2, 3, and 4 were obturated with CWC at 100° C, 150° C, and 200° C, respectively, with the plugger taken to a depth of 3 mm short of working length, and then backfilled. Although most child research is conducted with mothers as the primary source of data, results often are applied to fathers. Yet, mothers and fathers engage in different interactions with children and may have varying attitudes and knowledge of parenting. This project compared mothers and fathers on a variety of parenting measures. Participants included a community sample of 80 parents (40 mother-father pairs) and their male child between the ages of two and seven. This study evaluated potential differences between mothers and fathers on treatment acceptability, knowledge of behavioral principles, and observed parenting behaviors. Despite the existing evidence that implicates arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites, collectively called eicosanoids, in cancer onset and progression, little attention has been given to the enzymes, the cytosolic PLA2 (cPLA2), that usually provide free AA for eicosanoid biosynthesis. Four studies of point defects RbTiOPO4 and KTiOAsO4 crystals are described in this dissertation. In the first study, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electronnuclear double resonance (ENDOR) are used to characterize the complex hyperfine patterns exhibited by the primary radiation-induced trapped hole center in single crystals of RbTiOPO4 (commonly referred to as RTP). These defects are produced at 77 K by irradiating with x rays, and they are destroyed by raising the temperature above approximately 170 K.  Lysine is the limiting amino acid in many animal diets. Improving the efficiency of lysine use for protein synthesis can reduce feed cost and potentially the nitrogen and phosphorus output of agricultural production systems. Lysine not used for protein synthesis is oxidized, primarily by lysine α-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR). The mechanism(s) responsible for alterations in hepatic LKR activity in rodents and poultry are still unclear. This paper investigates racial differences in rates of arrest for violent hate crimes against persons. Using 2002 NIBRS data compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I develop and test logistic regression models which illuminate race’s influence on the police decision to arrest in violent hate crime incidents. Analyses of these models yield mixed support for hypotheses derived from the conflict perspective, central to which is the proposition that, within a class society, dominant groups use criminal law to increase their control of minority groups in order to maintain power and privileges historically reserved for elites. The present study considers how communication efficacy, activity preference, peer censure, femininity, masculinity, and gender identity relate to adolescents’ proportion of samesex friends. Participants were 149 adolescents aged between 15 and 17 years (63 males, 86 females, mean age 16.01). Participants completed a written questionnaire that asked questions about their friendships and about communication efficacy, activity preference, peer censure, femininity and masculinity, and gender identity. When both male and female data were analyzed together, results suggested that communication preference, a subscale of communication efficacy, and gender identity contributed to proportion of same-sex friends in adolescence. Ergot alkaloids, a category of mycotoxins produced by various fungi, adversely affect both humans and animals. Several plant-associated fungi in the genera Claviceps, Neotyphodium, and Epichloe (order Hypocreales) produce an array of ergot alkaloids. Another fungus, Aspergillus fumigatus that occupies a completely different ecological niche and is classified under the order Eurotiales, also produces ergot alkaloids. The gene clusters predicted to encode the enzymes required for ergot alkaloid production within these species are strikingly similar, however, they are poorly understood. Large rivers are multidimensional systems where ecological processes occur at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. This investigation addresses the relationship between fish distribution and habitat use within the Marmet Pool of the Kanawha River, West Virginia. Fish habitat use, movement patterns, distribution, and density data were obtained concurrently with abiotic data such as river discharge, temperature, depth, and sediment composition to provide essential dimensions to the assumption that habitat dictates location of organisms. Radio telemetry was used to examine movement, habitat use, and associations between large river fish species. These data were also used to make inferences about …

Religion And Spirituality In Professional Psychologist Training: A Survey Of Interns., Elizabeth J. Cassidy

This study examined doctoral psychology training practices in religion and spirituality. The relationships between training, religious/spiritual beliefs, and self-reported competence to address spirituality in counseling were explored. Approximately 253 clinical and counseling psychology interns completed a demographic questionnaire, a survey of religious/spiritual training received, measures of religious commitment and of the personal importance of spirituality, and a measure of self-perceived competence in addressing religious/spiritual issues in counseling. The return rate was 28%. Results suggest that a majority of interns had not been offered specific training in religion/spirituality and counseling; a majority felt only moderately competent to address spirituality within counseling; …

The National Science Education Standards (NSES) have established scientific literacy as a goal for all students. The goals advocate scientific inquiry as an instructional strategy to be used in the classroom, and standards of inquiry have even been established. At the same time, co-teaching has become prevalent in classroom as regular education teachers work with special education teachers. The classrooms are inclusive and both teachers are to work together to benefit all the students. Research has shown positive perceptions and negative perceptions of co-teaching. In this study, pre-service teachers are co-taught an elementary science methods course at a medium-sized university. …
