Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased among adolescents. This may have health implication because sugar consumption has been suggested to lead to decreased calcium (Ca) intake and increased urinary Ca output and these effects on Ca balance may have a negative impact on bone. Also, the type of sugar added to beverages has also changed from sucrose to high fructose corn syrup resulting in higher fructose consumption. The purpose of this study was to analyze sperm quality parameters and intersex severity of smallmouth bass in the South Branch of the Potomac River, and to determine if contaminants present in this river negatively affect these parameters. Samples were collected by boat electrofishing in May 2006 from three sites in the South Branch of the Potomac River and one site in the Gauley River. The three South Branch sites are in areas with historically high intersex occurrence. The site on the Gauley serves as the reference site. Gonads were collected from 38 male fish. The purpose of this study was to compare the leakage of an MTA apical barrier after final irrigation with 3% sodium hypochlorite, 2% chlorhexidine, 17% EDTA/3% sodium hypochlorite, or MTAD. Seventy single-rooted extracted teeth were accessed and the apical three millimeters of the root resected. The teeth were then instrumented with Profile Series 29 0.04 taper #7 to the apex. The same rotary instrument was then placed in the apical opening and advanced until D16 was even with the resected root-end. Patients who experience nocturnal bruxism are at risk for dysfunction of the stomatognathic system. This study examines participants’ change in knowledge before and after attending a childhood obesity training event. A pre-post assessment scale was used to measure and compare knowledge scores among participants of both two and three-day events. The questionnaire included seven subscales of content delivered during the training sessions. These included: training goals and movement guidelines, general obesity knowledge, general movement knowledge, assessing and evaluating children’s motor skills, and three subscales specifically on the movement workshops in the training. The purpose of this study was to examine the outdoor recreation behavior of Oregon’s aging population, including their motivations, degree of participation and the affect facilities and services have on their outdoor recreation intentions. A stratified random sample of Oregon residents was drawn of Oregon residents, and a mail-back questionnaire was chosen to sample those individuals. Information gathered included their level of outdoor recreation participation, importance of motivations, the affects of facilities and services items and socio-demographic variables. The main focus of this research and thesis was the development of a decentralized framework for the cooperative control of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The goal of the software was to coordinate multiple UAVs to perform a wide area search on a defined area. The developed algorithms were based on the idea that simple rules can be programmed leading to an overall complex behavior. The simple algorithm that was developed illustrates a high level of autonomy, including reactive behavior without human interaction. Increasing anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen deposition has the potential to result in nitrogen saturation in Northeastern forests. The response of forests to chronic N additions may be governed by the stand composition and may differ across spatial scales. Diel (24-hour) cycling of dissolved ions has been linked to various mechanisms such as fluctuations in temperature and photosynthetically-mediated pH. Yttrium and the rare earth elements (YREE) appear to fluctuate in response to temperature. After selecting a field site based on pH and temperature screening, five sampling events were undertaken: each involved hourly or bihourly sampling with concurrent stage, pH and temperature logging. For all events, YREE increased during the nighttime and decreased during the daytime. Dissolved Fe and Mn exhibited similar trends at one of the two sampled locations. Allium burdickii and A. tricoccum, known commonly as ramps or wild leeks, are two phenetically similar taxa with similar distributions. They have been synonymized, treated as varieties o f A. tricoccum, and recognized as distinct species. B ecause^. burdickii is reported rare and therefore tracked by conservation agencies in Appalachia, its taxonomic status is o f interest. This research examined fertility and morphological relationships between the two putative species. Self-compatibility was studied by evaluating agamospermy, passive autogamy, active autogamy and geitonogamy treatments within each taxon. Palladium-catalyzed reductive N-heteroannulation has emerged as a powerful tool in the construction of numerous N-containing heterocycles including indoles. The Soderberg conditions of these reactions have effectively been utilized to synthesize numerous 3-ethoxyindoles, the naturally occurring koniamborine and salviadione. The technique of RNA interference was applied in two different systems. In system I, RNA interference was used to knockdown expression of α-aminoadipate δ semialdehyde synthase (AASS). AASS is the bifunctional enzyme containing the lysine α-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR) and saccharopine dehydrogenase activities responsible for the first two steps in the irreversible catabolism of lysine. A rare disease in humans, familial hyperlysinemia, can be caused by very low LKR activity and, as expected, reduces the lysine “requirement” of the individual. Traditionally, endodontic therapy has maintained very high success rates; however when teeth are obturated with a positive culture in the root canal, the success rate of treatment is only 68% (50). Therefore, complete elimination of bacteria from the root canal system is a crucial aspect of endodontic therapy. Studies consistently show that success rates for teeth that were necrotic before treatment are lower than cases with vital pulps. Atrazine is the most heavily used herbicide in the United States by weight and human exposure to the compound is wide spread. This study sought to define the immunotoxic effects of atrazine for two types of atrazine exposure models; maternal exposure to atrazine over a period of weeks and acute exposure of adult immune cells to atrazine. We hypothesized that maternal atrazine exposure from day ten of pregnancy to day ten of lactation would result in significant changes to the adult immune system. Co-morbid insomnia accounts for almost 75% of such cases and, is considered to be a symptom (rather than a stand-alone disorder) that remits with treatment of the underlying medical or psychiatric disorder. Stevia and red beet suspension cultures were examined for uptake of silver from AgNO3 solution. Alfalfa and mung bean sprouts were also studied for silver accumulation when grown in AgNO3 solution. AA analysis confirmed the presence of silver in both sprouts and suspension cultures after exposure to AgNO3 solution, despite the toxic effects of silver on the living matter.;Extract from Pelargonium graveolens underwent reaction with both AgNO3 and KAuCl4 to form silver or gold nanoparticles. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of social bond and neutralization on juvenile drug usage. Part I of the Evaluation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program in the United States (1995-1999) was used for the data analysis. When controlling for other variables, the data revealed that juveniles who accept neutralization of stealing and juveniles who are involved with other delinquent peers are more likely to use illegal drugs. In addition, the data revealed that an adolescent's gender was significant in determining drug usage. The results generally support Hirschi's (1969) Social Bond Theory, and …

The inundation of cultural resources due to the construction of dams as water retention mechanism is a global problem, affecting thousands of historic and prehistoric sites. Recent warming trends, in combination with increasing water usage from growing populations and urban expansion has initiated dramatic pool-level shallowing in many reservoirs, especially in the American Southwest, resulting in the re-emergence of inundated cultural sites. Sensors based on evanescent wave techniques have the potential to detect minute change in refractive index arising from surface modifications. The biosensor device architecture evaluated in this work is the SPARROW (Stacked Planar Affinity Regulated Resonant Optical Waveguide) structure. To enhance and optimize sport performance, athletes are training at increasingly higher levels of intensity, volume and frequency. When increases in any of these areas of training are not accompanied by adequate recovery, over time, decrements in performance and physical/psychological maladies can result. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to monitor five competitive swimmers during a swimming season in two of the potential areas in which an adverse response to training may appear: the immunological parameter of mucosal immune function and the psychological parameter of mood state. This thesis explores the benefits of using multispectral iris information acquired using a narrow-band multispectral imaging system. Commercial iris recognition systems typically sense the iridal reflection pertaining to the near-infrared (IR) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. While near-infrared imaging does give a very reasonable image of the iris texture, it only exploits a narrow band of spectral information. By incorporating other wavelength ranges (infrared, red, green, blue) in iris recognition systems, the reflectance and absorbance properties of the iris tissue can be exploited to enhance recognition performance. Crystallaria asprella spp. (Elk River crystal darter) is documented only in Elk River, West Virginia. Little life history detail is known about this lotic, benthic-dependent species. Previous studies have led to a very basic understanding of the use of depth, flow and substrate of the crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella), and less is known about the Elk River crystal darter.
