The ubiquitin/26S proteasome system (UPS) is conserved in all eukaryotic species. The 26S proteasome serves as the protease in this pathway and is responsible for the degradation of abnormal and short-lived proteins after their modification with a polyubiquitin tag. It consists of one or two ATP-dependent, 19S regulatory particles and an ATP-independent 20S core protease. PAG1 serves as one of at least 14 different subunits of the 20S core protease. Photonic crystals are periodic nanostructures used to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Depending on geometry and refractive index contrast between adjacent regions, periodic variation of the refractive index can result in a photonic band gap or non-allowed set of frequencies that cannot propagate through the crystal. Defects can be introduced at photonic crystal lattice sites, resulting in localized modes that lie within the photonic gap. Such defect cavities can be tuned to resonant frequencies of a defect mode and whole planes or lines of defects can be fabricated in photonic crystals resulting in optical confinement of defect modes. Peanut butter and peanut paste products were implicated as the vehicle of contamination in an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium that began in September 2008 and in the November 2006 outbreak of Salmonella Tennessee; therefore based on the apparent need for intervention measure, the purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of non-thermal electron beam irradiation for reduction of Salmonella serovars Tennessee (ATCC 10722) and Typhimurium (ATCC 14028) in creamy peanut butter. The impact of acid deposition on forest productivity has been studied extensively during the past 30 years. Mixed results abound due to variations in forest age, species composition, land use history, climate, and different experimental procedures. However, most results suggest alterations in productivity and nutrient status as a result of elevated acid deposition. Successful management of recurrent headache among adolescents requires an understanding of the lifestyle behaviors (skipping meals, water intake, tobacco use, alcohol use, and physical activity) and illness related factors (depression, somatic complaints, insomnia and obesity) reported to be associated with this headache type. This study describes a multivariate model demonstrating how lifestyle behaviors and illness related factors work together to predict recurrent headache in an adolescent population.;Method. High dimensional data is widely available in bioinformatics, chemometrics and other applications. For example, in gene expression experiments, tens of thousands of genes are probed. Phenotype data may be clinical data such as tumor types, or quantities measuring biological characteristics of a subject. While such high dimensional data can be readily generated, successful analysis and modeling of these data is highly challenging.;Random KNN, as proposed in this dissertation, is a novel generalization of traditional nearest-neighbor modeling. Fire is an inherently spatial process that is tightly coupled to spatial patterns in climate and topography. This is particularly true in the dry western United States, where confounded by the legacy of fire suppression and the trend in global warming, large high severity fires are increasingly frequent. Recent work has integrated space and time analyses of fire regimes through the application of geographic information science (GIS). Various evidence-based behavioral parent training programs are theoretically designed to target parenting skills that enhance parent-child interactions. Many similarities exist across the empirically-supported interventions, however programs also include unique components (e.g., use of reflections in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy). Empirical examination of individual components is necessary to inform components that promote or deter intervention effectiveness and efficiency. An empirically established association among language delays, behavior difficulties, and poor longitudinal outcomes further supports a need for identification of facilitative components. Mothers are primary caregivers and gatekeepers for family health yet little is known about the nature and level of maternal concern, social support, and health-related quality of life for mothers across the maternal continuum. This research was designed to examine the relationship between maternal concerns and health-related quality of life, describe the impact of social support on this relationship, identify the relationship between sociodemographic factors and concern, social support and HRQOL, and identify differences in these variables among categories of mothers. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) has been shown to be the most promising exhaust aftertreatment system for reducing oxides of nitrogen in near term in-use applications. SCRs use the ammonia containing compound urea, as a reducing agent. In order to control the urea dosage during transient operation of the engine, sophisticated control strategies are needed. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) has been used to investigate the potential for retrieving information from an erased or altered audiotape. The audiotape recording process, the reasons for the distortion of signals during the recording process are presented. An in-depth study has been conducted to investigate the effects of MFM operation parameters on the data retrieval process. Most importantly, these include interleave height and tip speed. Interleave height (i.e., the height of the MFM tip above the surface) has been optimized for maximum clarity of MFM images. How can young children use visual art to communicate? This study used Halliday's communicative functions of language (Halliday, 1973), to frame the answer to this question; Halliday's categories of communicative functions are: instrumental, regulatory, interactional, personal, heuristic, imaginative, and representational/informative. Five children, between the ages of three and five, were observed and interviewed as they voluntarily created visual art over a six-week period. In that time period, each of the seven functions of language was demonstrated collectively by the participants. The research was conducted by an educator employed in the early childhood setting. A short asymmetric synthesis of (R)-(+)-Goniothalamin oxide was developed and synthesized using a Leighton asymmetric allylation reaction and Grubbs ring-closing metathesis. (R)-(+)-Goniothalamin oxide is a styryl lactone that exhibits anti-cancer activity against a variety of cancer cell lines including MCF-7, T47D, and MDA-MB-231. The methododology of asymmetric allylation is also demonstrated on intermediates of RK-397, which is a 32-membered oxopolyene macrolide with anti-cancer activity.

Researchers have associated Diane Baumrind's parenting styles (Baumrind, 1967; Baumrind, 1966; Baumrind, 1968; Baumrind, 1971) with countless outcomes among children, adolescents, and adults. However, few, if any, have investigated an age group's perceptions of their childrearing compared with their inclination to become parents. This study examined 67 West Virginia University students' responses to the Adapted Parenting Attribute Questionnaire (APAQ) completed by Child Development and Family Studies majors in 2007. The formation and growth of intracranial aneurysms are partly attributed to various hemodynamic factors, such as the wall shear stress and pressure. However, the exact nature of the hemodynamic variables responsible for triggering aneurismal growth is still unknown. The conclusions drawn by various studies in this regard are found to be speculative and sometimes ambiguous. Using pest species in initial studies of pentosidine (Ps) aging research for birds may be the catalyst to discovering more effective population control strategies for pest, invasive, and hard to manage birds. Pentosidine is an irreversible, stable, fluorescent, collagen cross-link, created through the Maillard reaction, which has been found to accumulate throughout the lifetime of an organism in various body parts such as skin, lens crystalline, and dura matter. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are the most abundant big game species in North America and serve as the dominant herbivore in the majority of the Appalachian region. Despite the abundance of research conducted on this species, relatively little is known of the ecology of white-tailed deer occurring at low densities. Our study population experienced a 75% decline in population density and a three-fold increase in habitat disturbance via timber harvests between 2002 and 2005. Modern wireless communication systems must be optimized with respect to both bandwidth efficiency and energy efficiency. A common approach to achieve these goals is to use multi-level modulation such as quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) for bandwidth efficiency and an error-control code for energy efficiency. In benign additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, Ungerboeck proposed trellis-coded modulation (TCM), which combines modulation and coding into a joint operation. The protein caveolin-1 has been shown to positively affect angiogenesis and vascular remodeling in vivo via studies using knockout mice. In fact, defects in these two processes are among the major hallmarks of an otherwise benign caveolin-null phenotype. Current dogma on the function of caveolin-1 does not predict or account for these deficits. There are few USDA organic certified practices for controlling the nematode Haemonchus contortus. This small ruminant parasite has a life cycle that makes it a candidate for control using field rotations. The third-stage of the nematode's life cycle is responsible for infecting or re-infecting a host and the use of chickens to control H. contortus has not been tested. This experiment was conducted to determine if the chicken's foraging behavior reduces the number of infective third-stage larvae on the pasture by comparing a chicken sub-plot, a sub-plot that was mowed, a control sub-plot and a pretreatment. The Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV) was formed to implement range-wide strategies that sustain healthy, fishable brook trout populations. Hudy et al. (2006) recently completed a comprehensive analysis of eastern brook trout distributions representing a critical first step towards fully integrating brook trout conservation efforts in this region. This study was designed to supplement and complement existing data on brook trout distributions and status within West Virginia. Root rot disease is a limiting factor in organic production of cool season crops for many growers in North central West Virginia. In attempt to control root rot and its devastating impact on crop stands we decided to study a number of environmental, cultural, and biological control methods. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of alterations of the seed environment on disease incidence (measured by crop emergence and survival 21 days after planting) and thereby define techniques which are suitable for small growers to adopt if they have root rot problems. Background. Within adherence research, health beliefs have been identified as being significant predictors of adherence. Specifically, perceived threat as a health belief has received considerable attention. However, a gap in current knowledge exists in terms of understanding perceived threat of illness as an event that is appraised by the patient.;Aim. The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive study was to examine cognitive appraisal of perceived threat of illness in relation to adherence to self-management behaviors in uninsured/under-insured persons with type 2 diabetes.;Method.
