The aim of this study was to determine 1) If teeth centeredness over basal bone improves when teeth are more upright or approach WALA Ridge norms 2) If teeth centeredness in alveolar bone improves when teeth are more upright or approach WALA Ridge norms 3) If the WALA ridge is located at or near the estimated center of resistance …
Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), Jakob Goldner
Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), Jakob Goldner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An obstacle to efficient management of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is the lack of knowledge of its seasonal movements at the landscape level. H. halys is highly mobile and utilizes various commodities throughout the growing season and winter, making it difficult to manage. We hypothesized that H. halys displayed an annual spatial pattern at the farm scale and as they moved into overwintering habitats. To test for a spatial pattern at the farm scale, we conducted a two-year spatial study on three organic farms in West Virginia and New Jersey. A total of 92-127 sample …
Development Of A Cobinamide-Based Optical Sensor For Hydrogen Cyanide And Hydrogen Sulfide, Lee Ann Greenawald
Development Of A Cobinamide-Based Optical Sensor For Hydrogen Cyanide And Hydrogen Sulfide, Lee Ann Greenawald
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In an occupational or military environment, a personal air-purifying respirator must be provided when breathing-air is contaminated by harmful dust, fumes, gases, aerosols, or vapors. Too often, a respirator user does not have enough information to know when to change his/her cartridge/canister and thus is potentially exposed to toxic gases. Currently, there is no definitive way to determine when respirators' carbon beds have begun to fail. When an end-of-service-life indicator (ESLI) is incorporated into the carbon bed, it informs one, in real-time, when imminent breakthrough is occurring and to replace the cartridge/canister. ESLIs are a more reliable and safer way …

An Integrated Lateral Flow Device For Flow Control And Blood Separation, Veronica Betancur Calle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lateral flow devices (LFD) have been used and are promising in many applications, including point-of-care diagnosis in medical, clinical, food and environmental control and monitoring. In particular, disposable paper-based lateral flow strips utilize low-cost materials and do not require expensive fabrication instruments. Many examples of diagnostic tests have been developed using microfluidics paper analytical devices (muPADs), including tests for the detection of total glucose and protein in urine (colorimetric), detection of beta-galactosidase (fluorescence), and liver enzyme tests for monitoring the health of patients been treated with multiple medications for HIV and/or tuberculosis that can cause hepatotoxicity. However, there are constraints …
Paradoxical Roles Of Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapeutics And Carcinogenesis, Emily Despeaux
Paradoxical Roles Of Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapeutics And Carcinogenesis, Emily Despeaux
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nanoparticles (NPs) are becoming increasingly common in consumer goods and are under investigation for a variety of industrial and biomedical applications. However, challenges in determining NP toxicity may prevent them from reaching their full potential. NPs cannot be treated as single class for toxicity evaluations. Even among particles made from the same material, particle-specific physical properties, including size, shape, surface charge, agglomeration state, and surface modifications have a strong effect on the toxicity. Even so, the obstacles to conclusively and reproducibly evaluating toxicity span all NP classes. NP literature is riddled with confusing and often contradictory reports regarding the biocompatibility …
Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Volcanic eruptions have influenced regional and global climate on annual, interannual, decadal, and multi-decadal time scales. However, past studies have largely focused on the response of global temperature to modern eruptions with the aid of satellite records. This approach limits the number of eruptions that can be studied and restricts our knowledge to relatively small events when compared to the volcanic history of the late Holocene. I used modern climate records to evaluate the effect of recent eruptions on Mongolian climate. I then extended my analysis to the last 2500 years by examining existing and new tree-ring data from Mongolia …

The Effect Of Physicochemical Properties On The Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Induced Genotoxicity And Carcinogenesis, Katelyn J. Siegrist
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are one of the most exciting industrial materials of our time. They are used in life-saving medical therapeutics and many commercial products that could make day-to-day life seem effortless. However, previous toxicological research has demonstrated this material to be significantly genotoxic in both in vitro and in vivo models and potentially carcinogenic in the lung. The unique physiochemical properties of MWCNT make respiratory exposures likely in workers. Combining the genotoxic effects with the potential for lung deposition in the workplace, MWCNT should be considered as a potential health hazard. Altering the physiochemical properties of MWCNT has …

Exercise As A Treatment For Conduit Artery Dysfunction In A Comorbid State Of Metabolic Syndrome And Depressive-Like Symptoms, Chris Skinner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metabolic Syndrome (Mets) is a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors that results in a three-fold increase in cardiovascular disease. MetS is known to be associated with adverse arterial remodeling, endothelial dysfunction, decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, increased inflammation, and conduit artery dysfunction. Depression/chronic stress is emerging as a potent contributor to MetS, with MetS also aiding in the progression of depression, and thus increased vascular dysfunction. These bi-directional comorbidities are continually increasing in prevalence, justifying a need for research on their interplay and potential treatments. Aerobic exercise is a widely accepted therapy for the risk factors associated with MetS, mental …
Bone Marrow Microenvironment Regulation Of Bcl6 In Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, William Lee Slone
Bone Marrow Microenvironment Regulation Of Bcl6 In Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, William Lee Slone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a hematological malignancy with approximately 6000 newly diagnosed cases every year. Although ALL is the most common malignancy in children, it can occur in patients of all ages. Great strides have been made in the treatment of ALL and remission rates are at all-time highs. However, relapse rates have remained relatively consistent, and relapse continues to be correlated with a poor prognosis in patients with ALL. As the site of origin and progression of ALL, the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM) is important in regulating tumor cell quiescence and proliferation. Of clinical relevance is the frequency …

Recent advancements in the semiconductor fabrication technologies have greatly helped in advancing the understanding of electrochemistry at nano scale (10-9 m). Electrodes are being produced at micro (10-6 m) and nano scale with varied materials, designs and for diverse applications. Better electrochemical sensing and detecting capabilities are achieved with nanoelectrodes in comparison with regular macroelectrodes. Lot of theoretical studies of electrochemistry at these nanoelectrodes have been proposed and developed. Despite the theoretical advancements, little has been done in experimental studies of nanoelectrodes. The progress is majorly impeded by lack of reliable fabrication procedures to produce such nanoelectrodes and test them …
Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Preference Of Aquatic Versus Terrestrial Prey In Appalachian Headwater Streams, Erin E. Thayer
Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Preference Of Aquatic Versus Terrestrial Prey In Appalachian Headwater Streams, Erin E. Thayer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis aims to investigate the foraging behavior of Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), specially focusing on prey preference. Brook Trout are mainly restricted to head-water streams in Appalachia, which is a portion of their native range. These environments generally have low autochthonous materials. Therefore, resident aquatic organisms rely heavily on terrestrial inputs, i.e. leaf litter and terrestrial invertebrates (TI's), to subsidize individual energy requirements at critical times of the year. There is mixed evidence demonstrating stream dwelling trout show either a feeding preference towards aquatic invertebrates (AI's) or towards TI's. Chapter one is an in depth literature review of headwater …

Climate Change, Capitalism, And Citizen Science: Developing A Dialectical Framework For Examining Volunteer Participation In Climate Change Research, Joshua A. Wixom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation discusses the complex social relations that link citizen science, scientific literacy, and the dissemination of information to the public. Scientific information is not produced in value-neutral settings by people removed from their social context. Instead, science is a social pursuit and the scientist's social context is embedded in the knowledge produced. Additionally, the dissemination of this information via numerous media outlets is filtered through institutional lenses and subject to journalistic norms. As a result, the general public must be able to recognize the inherent biases in this information. Yet, the rates of scientific literacy in the U.S. are …

Responses And Adaptation Strategies Of Terrestrial Ecosystems To Climate Change, Zhen Yu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Terrestrial ecosystems are likely to be affected by climate change, as climate change-induced shift of water and heat stresses patterns will have significant impacts on species composition, habitat distribution, and ecosystem functions, and thereby weaken the terrestrial carbon (C) sink and threaten global food security and biofuel production. This thesis investigates the responses of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change and is structured in four main chapters.;The first chapter of the thesis is directed towards the impacts of snow variation on ecosystem phenology. Variations in seasonal snowfall regulate regional and global climatic systems and vegetation growth by changing energy budgets of …
Effects Of Rumen-Protected Methionine, Choline And Betaine On Dairy Cattle Health And Performance, Yu Zang
Effects Of Rumen-Protected Methionine, Choline And Betaine On Dairy Cattle Health And Performance, Yu Zang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dairy cows experience extensive lipid mobilization in adipose tissue during the transition from gestation to lactation. A high amount of circulating non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) results in fatty liver that is associated with reduced milk production (Duffield et al., 2009), metabolic diseases (Hammon et al., 2006), and decreased reproductive performance (Walsh et al., 2007). The function of VLDL is to export TAG from liver. Previous work suggested that micronutrients supplemented may elevated VLDL export. Choline has been shown to increase milk production and milk fat yield (Erdman et al., 1991) and decrease triacylglycerol (TAG) in the liver (Pomfret et al., …

First Row Transition Metal Mediated Redox Reactions Of Hydrazines And Isonitriles, John Riedesel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Over the past 50 years, there has been an explosion in the progress of transition-metal mediated reaction design, allowing chemists to perform a vast array of organic and inorganic transformations. While first-row transition-metals play a role in many reactions that have been known for some time, second- and third-row transition-metals have been key for the discovery and success of many of the most well-known and utilized reactions in homogeneous catalysis existing today. However, developing reactions utilizing first-row transition-metals has re-gained in popularity over recent years, in part due to the general expense of heavier metals. Also, the ability of first-row …
Imaging White Blood Cells Using A Snapshot Hyper-Spectral Imaging System, Christopher John Robison
Imaging White Blood Cells Using A Snapshot Hyper-Spectral Imaging System, Christopher John Robison
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Automated white blood cell (WBC) counting systems process an extracted whole blood sample and provide a cell count. A step that would not be ideal for onsite screening of individuals in triage or at a security gate. Snapshot Hyper-Spectral imaging systems are capable of capturing several spectral bands simultaneously, offering co-registered images of a target. With appropriate optics, these systems are potentially able to image blood cells in vivo as they flow through a vessel, eliminating the need for a blood draw and sample staining. Our group has evaluated the capability of a commercial Snapshot Hyper-Spectral imaging system, specifically the …
Radioactive Masculinity: How The Anxious Postcolonial Learnt To Love And Live In Fear Of The Nuclear Bomb, Dibyadyuti Roy
Radioactive Masculinity: How The Anxious Postcolonial Learnt To Love And Live In Fear Of The Nuclear Bomb, Dibyadyuti Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Radioactive Masculinity explores how the Cold War legacy, of nuclear weapons finding resonance in images of white maleness and masculinity, results in anxious hypermasculine performances. These discursive and physical masculine acts contingent on the symbolic and material power of nuclear weapons, I argue, represent radioactive masculinity, a form of hegemonic militarized masculinity, which is intrinsically linked to the concept of nationhood and sovereignty. This idealized masculinity is fluid and cannot be tangibly or materially realized, much like the constantly decaying radioactive bomb on which it is modeled. Through analyzing a wide range of artifacts from America and India, I show …

A Feasibility Study For The Automated Monitoring And Control Of Mine Water Discharges, Christopher R. Vass
A Feasibility Study For The Automated Monitoring And Control Of Mine Water Discharges, Christopher R. Vass
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The chemical treatment of mine-influenced waters is a longstanding environmental challenge for many coal operators, particularly in Central Appalachia. Mining conditions in this region present several unique obstacles to meeting NPDES effluent limits. Outlets that discharge effluent are often located in remote areas with challenging terrain where conditions do not facilitate the implementation of large-scale commercial treatment systems. Furthermore, maintenance of these systems is often laborious, expensive, and time consuming. Many large mining complexes discharge water from numerous outlets, while using environmental technicians to assess the water quality and treatment process multiple times per day. Unfortunately, this treatment method when …

Identification And Functional Predication Of Long Non-Coding Rnas In Rainbow Trout And Cattle, Jian Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The simplest definition of a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is an RNA transcript larger than 200 nucleotides that does not encode for a functional protein product. This definition distinguishes lncRNAs from small regulatory RNAs such as microRNAs (miRNAs), short interfering RNAs (siRNAs), Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) and other short RNAs. They have emerged as a new class of regulatory transcripts in recent years. Recent advances in sequencing technologies have opened a new horizon for the identification and annotation of this class of RNAs in many species. With the increasing evidence supporting important roles of lincRNAs in diverse processes, a systematic catalog …

Eye Tracking To Evaluate Proficiency Of Crime Scene Investigators With Varying Levels Of Expertise: The Ability To Recognize Evidence And Understand Its Significance, Renuka Devi Watalingam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Crime scene analysts are the core of criminal investigations; decisions made at the scene greatly affect the speed of analysis and quality of conclusions that directly impact the successful resolution of a case. If an examiner does not recognize the pertinence of an item on scene, it cannot be used to support his or her theory regarding the crime. Conversely, unselective evidence collection will include irrelevant material, thus increasing a forensic laboratory's backlog and sending the investigation into an unproductive and costly direction. Therefore, it is critical that analysts recognize and properly evaluate forensic evidence that can support or disprove …
