Movement Ecology Of Philippine Birds Of Prey, Camille B. Concepcion Jan 2017

Movement Ecology Of Philippine Birds Of Prey, Camille B. Concepcion

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Movement ecology is an emerging paradigm important to conservation biology and to the protection of global biodiversity. I used two common, but poorly known Philippine birds of prey as study tools in understanding movement ecology. One species is the migratory grey-faced buzzard (Butastur indicus), a raptor that which visits the islands in large numbers in winter. The other is the resident Philippine serpent eagle (Spilornis holospilus) which lives there at relatively high population density year-round. I used migration data at two terrestrial hawkwatch sites to assess how weather correlates influenced the movement behaviors of grey-faced buzzards. The grey-faced buzzard was …

Effects Of Volcanic Ash Deposition And The Manson Impact On Marine Paleoredox And Paleoproductivity: Geochemical Evidence From The Cretaceous Pierre Shale, Isabella Cross-Najafi Jan 2017

Effects Of Volcanic Ash Deposition And The Manson Impact On Marine Paleoredox And Paleoproductivity: Geochemical Evidence From The Cretaceous Pierre Shale, Isabella Cross-Najafi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cretaceous Period. There is limited research on organic carbon content of the Pierre Shale in South Dakota. Frequent volcanic eruptions combined with climate change resulted in an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to decreases in marine oxygen content. Decreasing marine oxygen has been attributed to higher amounts of preserved organic matter in marine sediment. Impact of volcanic ash deposition in the Cretaceous Interior Seaway has not been thoroughly studied. The Pierre Shale also contains the Crow Creek Member, a 5 foot thick layer of unconsolidated sand and rip-up clasts which may indicate a high-energy depositional event. Some …

Predictors Of Treatment Attendance And Adherence Among Individuals Receiving Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Insomnia, Ruifeng Cui

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rates of Insomnia Disorder have been found to be as high as 10% in the general population. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an effective treatment for insomnia. Problematically, low rates of treatment attendance and adherence are common in CBT-I and negatively impact treatment outcomes. The present study examined predictors of attendance and adherence in a sample of adults receiving CBT-I. Identifying common predictors may help researchers in designing more effective CBT-I treatments. Participants were 108 community dwelling adults aged 19-95 who met criteria for Insomnia Disorder. The sample was comprised of primarily female (71.3%) middle age ( M …

The Effects Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid And Berberine Supplementation On Markers Of Allopurinol Activated Oxidative Stress In Broiler Chickens, Vincent Dartigue Jan 2017

The Effects Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid And Berberine Supplementation On Markers Of Allopurinol Activated Oxidative Stress In Broiler Chickens, Vincent Dartigue

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Selection for rapid growth in poultry can be linked to an exaggerated state of oxidative stress (reactive oxidative species, ROS). Reactive oxidative species are kept in balance by endogenous and exogenous antioxidants. Two compounds, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and berberine (BRB) a purified compound from plant root extract have been suggested to ameliorate antioxidant activity. A ten week study examined the effect of CLA and berberine supplementation on markers of oxidative stress in poultry. Broiler chickens (n=60) were equally divided into six groups; a control, a CLA group where half of the regular oil used in a standard was substituted …

Depression, Treatment Response To Tnfi, And Economic Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arijita Deb Jan 2017

Depression, Treatment Response To Tnfi, And Economic Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arijita Deb

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depression is one of the most frequently occurring conditions in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients and understanding depression as a comorbidity in RA is very important. The link between RA and depression is very complex and influenced by a multitude of factors such as shared pathophysiologic pathways of inflammation, RA-related treatment response, as well as the patient's demographic and socio-economic factors, and general difficulties in coping with the disease. Depression can increase the clinical, humanistic, and economic burden among RA patients. Growing evidence now suggests that depression is a systemic inflammatory condition and may exert a negative influence on the treatment …

High-Intensity Pleasure And Self-Regulation In Adolescence, Katy L. Delong Jan 2017

High-Intensity Pleasure And Self-Regulation In Adolescence, Katy L. Delong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Much research exists on the importance of high-intensity pleasure and self-regulation predicting various outcomes in adolescence. Less well understood is how these constructs interact. The present study includes 116 adolescents (Mage = 15.50, 61.7% male) and a participating parent. The present studied investigated if self-regulation moderated the association between high- intensity pleasure and adolescent outcomes including depressive symptoms, substance use, interpersonal functioning, and academic functioning. Covarying age and gender, main and moderation effects were examined with hierarchical linear regression and logistic regression analyses. More high-intensity pleasure only predicted parent-rated adolescent interpersonal functioning. Self-regulation predicted less likelihood of alcohol use in …

A Multidimensional Approach To Understanding Gender And Health Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Rebecca K. Delaney Jan 2017

A Multidimensional Approach To Understanding Gender And Health Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Rebecca K. Delaney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

"Women get sicker, men die quicker," is a statement used to describe how women suffer from more chronic health conditions, greater physical limitations, and report poorer health compared to men (Crimmins, Kim, & Sole -Auro, 2011; Lochner & Cox, 2010), whereas men have a shorter life expectancy compared to women (CDC, 2013). Although biological sex differences offer some explanation for why men and women differ in health and mortality, there is much left unexplained (Miller, 2014). Gender, a psychosocial construct that reflects attitudes, feelings, and behaviors prescribed by cultural expectations for men and women (Unger, 1979) has been highlighted as …

Development Of Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Acid Mine Drainage And Municipal Wastewater Management In Energy Producing Regions, Dongyang Deng Jan 2017

Development Of Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Acid Mine Drainage And Municipal Wastewater Management In Energy Producing Regions, Dongyang Deng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Acid mine drainage (AMD) and municipal wastewater (MWW) are two major pollution sources in headwaters of Appalachia and energy producing regions worldwide. Incorporating the prevalent chemistry of the two wastes in designing treatment technologies for concurrent management of the wastes can provide multi-faceted benefits. First, alkalinity in MWW can raise the pH of AMD upon mixing, and promote chemical precipitation of metal hydroxides and carbonates. Second, low solubility of phosphate with multivalent metals (e.g., Fe and Al) can be an effective mechanism for recovering phosphate from MWW. Third, sulfate ions from AMD can serve as an electron acceptor for oxidation …

Charge Transfer Dissociation Mass Spectrometry Of Biomolecules, Pengfei Li Jan 2017

Charge Transfer Dissociation Mass Spectrometry Of Biomolecules, Pengfei Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent advances in many biological disciplines are closely related to the development and application of new mass spectrometry techniques. The investigation of gas-phase ion activation techniques is one of the active research fields. Although researchers have developed a variety of ion activation techniques, they all suffer from certain intrinsic limitations---either limited in the types of fragment ions, or limited by the inefficiency with low charge-state precursor ions. Most of the ion activation techniques are not commercially available, and are at their developing stages.;As an attempt to explore new possibilities of fragmenting a gas-phase ion, charge transfer dissociation (CTD) was developed …

Microbial Quality And Pathogen Decontamination Strategies For Locally-Grown, Fresh Produce From West Virginia And Kentucky, Ka Wang Li Jan 2017

Microbial Quality And Pathogen Decontamination Strategies For Locally-Grown, Fresh Produce From West Virginia And Kentucky, Ka Wang Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological quality/safety of fresh produce from farmers' markets (FM) and assess the post-harvest washing practice with antimicrobials to inactivate Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes on fresh produce. In study I, 212 produce samples were tested for the presence of Salmonella and Listeria spp. using modified FDA-BAM methods. Aerobic plate counts (APCs), total coliforms (TCCs), and yeast/molds were analyzed on petri-films. Among the 212 samples, the APCs, TCCs, and yeast/molds were 3.72-5.63, 3.67-5.47, and 3.07-4.13 log CFU/g, respectively, with spinach containing the highest (P<0.05) populations. Among all tested samples, Salmonella enterica spp. enterica was detected on 18.6% of spinach, 10.9% of tomatoes, 18.5% of peppers, and 56.3% of cantaloupes, which is much higher than previous reported. Only 3.78% of the samples were confirmed for Listeria spp., and 50% of them were identified as L. monocytogenes, based on multiplex PCR results. Due to the high percentage of pathogens detected on the farmers' marker produce, an evaluation of post-harvest produce washing with various antimicrobials was conducted in study II. Specifically, spinach, tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers were inoculated with S. Typhimurium and Tennessee or L. monocytogenes and washed in tap water, vinegar water (10%), lactic acid (5%), a lactic and citric acid blend (2.5%), and sodium hypochlorite (200 ppm) for 30 sec or unwashed. Vinegar water (10%) showed better (P<0.05) reduction of S. Typhimurium and Tennessee on tomatoes and cucumbers, and L. monocytogenes on tomatoes and peppers than tap water. The three antimicrobials reached an additional reduction level of 0.9 to 2.7 (S. Typhimurium and Tennessee) and 0.2 to 1.4 log CFU/g ( L. monocytogenes) compared to tap water. Lactic acid caused the greatest (P<0.05) reduction of S. Typhimurium and Tennessee on spinach and green peppers, and sodium hypochlorite showed the great (P<0.05) reduction of L. monocytogenes on cucumbers. The results supplied important information for FM vendors to develop post-harvest protocols to control foodborne pathogens.

More Than Just Attendance: Individualistic Versus Collective Religious Socialization On Religious Change, Caitlin Halligan Jan 2017

More Than Just Attendance: Individualistic Versus Collective Religious Socialization On Religious Change, Caitlin Halligan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the recent rise in individuals not identifying with a religion, now is a prime time to research disaffiliation. Using data from the National Study of Youth and Religion, the present study examines whether or not collective religious participation in early adolescence, above and beyond individualistic religious participation, reduces the likelihood of disaffiliation in young adulthood. The results show that those who attended a religious youth group in early adolescence were less likely to disaffiliate in early adulthood than those who did not attend. Youth group seems to have a unique role in retaining youth involvement in the church.

High School Coaches' Experiences With Openly Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Athletes, Meghan K. Halbrook Jan 2017

High School Coaches' Experiences With Openly Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Athletes, Meghan K. Halbrook

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite reports that there has been a positive trend in perception and treatment of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals in recent years (Griffin, 2012; Loftus, 2001), sport, in general, is still an uncertain, and sometimes even hostile, environment for LGB athletes (Anderson, 2005; Beylin, 2006; Waldron & Krane, 2005). These concerns may be even more prevalent at the high school level, with student-athletes putting a strong emphasis on attempting to develop an independent and positive social identity through group or team interactions (Grant et al., 2014; Taifel & Turner, 1986). To gain more information on coach understanding and perceptions …

Investigating Stress Response Across Integrated Biological Systems, Alice A. Han Jan 2017

Investigating Stress Response Across Integrated Biological Systems, Alice A. Han

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The impact that a stressor has on a living system, whether it is on a cellular, organ, or even a whole organism level, can affect the overall health of the system. Monitoring the biochemical response resulting from a stressful experience offers insight into the numerous potential outcomes ranging on the spectrum of survival and death. Accessing this information not only provides a heightened understanding of the biochemical adaptions that occur, but also allows for the development of prediction models (to assess prospective influences of the stressor) or potential therapeutic treatments (to alleviate adverse effects) using measurable, quantifiable, and comparable metrics. …

Correlating Metastable-Atom Density, Reduced Electric Field, And Electron Energy Distribution In The Initiation, Transient, And Post-Transient Stages Of A Pulsed Argon Discharge, James B. Franek Jan 2017

Correlating Metastable-Atom Density, Reduced Electric Field, And Electron Energy Distribution In The Initiation, Transient, And Post-Transient Stages Of A Pulsed Argon Discharge, James B. Franek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Argon emission lines, particularly those in the near-infrared region (700-900nm), are used to determine plasma properties in low-temperature, partially ionized plasmas to determine effective electron temperature [Boffard et al., 2012], and argon excited state density [Boffard et al., 2009] using appropriately assumed electron energy distributions. While the effect of radiation trapping influences the interpretation of plasma properties from emission-line ratio analysis, eliminating the need to account for these effects by directly observing the 3px-to-1sy transitions [ Boffard et al., 2012] is preferable in most cases as this simplifies the analysis. In this dissertation, a 1-Torr argon, pulsed positive column in …

The Impact Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma On Primary Care And Costs Of Chronic Conditions In Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries, Rahul Garg Jan 2017

The Impact Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma On Primary Care And Costs Of Chronic Conditions In Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries, Rahul Garg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is an aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with a median age of diagnosis of 67 years. The intensive treatment of DLBCL can negatively influence elderly patients' preventive and chronic care, which can increase the costs of different chronic conditions. DLBCL diagnosis and treatment can affect patients' visits to their primary care providers (PCPs) and other specialists, which are important for patients' preventive screenings and chronic care. Further, having DLBCL increases the risk for breast cancer, and DLBCL treatment is associated with cardiotoxicity and increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Thus, mammography and bone mineral …

Relative Linkages Of Stream Dissolved Oxygen With The Environmental Drivers Across The Gulf Coast Of U.S.A, Aron Gebreslase

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dynamics of coastal stream water quality and ecosystem health is influenced by a multitude of interacting environmental drivers. A systematic data analytics approach was employed to determine the relative environmental controls on stream dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics across the Gulf Coast of U.S.A. Pearson's correlation, principal component, and factor analyses were utilized to examine the interrelations among DO, solar radiation, water temperature, atmospheric pressure, flow rate, nutrients, pH, and specific conductance (a surrogate of salinity) in 36 streams. Relative linkages of DO and the environmental drivers were then reliably estimated by resolving multicollinearity with power-law based partial least squares regression …

Gas-Phase Protein Structure Characterization With Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samaneh Ghassabi Kondalaji Jan 2017

Gas-Phase Protein Structure Characterization With Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Samaneh Ghassabi Kondalaji

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the last few decades, the widespread application of soft ionization techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) facilitated the characterization of large biomolecules in the gas phase. Under suitable conditions and during the short timescale of the desolvation process associated with ESI (10-12-102 s), the solvent-free protein ions preserve significant portions of their native solution-phase structure and are presumed to be kinetically protected from thermodynamic destabilization such as unfolding-refolding processes occurring in the gas phase that could yield an "inside-out" structure.;The combination of ESI with ion mobility spectrometry- mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) provides information regarding higher-order …

A Cbct Analysis Of Optimal Maxillary And Mandibular Incisor Inclination, Marina Gonchar Jan 2017

A Cbct Analysis Of Optimal Maxillary And Mandibular Incisor Inclination, Marina Gonchar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background and Objectives: One of the most challenging questions faced in the field of orthodontics is defining the envelope of tooth movement, and answering a fundamental question, where do teeth belong in relation to bone? Incisor position, both in the maxilla and mandible, are often compromised in order to accommodate an unfavorable skeletal pattern in the sagittal, vertical, and transverse dimensions during orthodontic therapy. Optimal incisor inclination has been a continuous debate in the field of orthodontics leaving the experts divided. The question still remains what are the clinical limits of orthodontic tooth movement, which will result in the most …

Effects Of Systematic Sleep Fragmentation On Tolerance And Threshold In A Pressure Pain Task: Associations With Sustained Attention, Margeaux Marissa Gray Jan 2017

Effects Of Systematic Sleep Fragmentation On Tolerance And Threshold In A Pressure Pain Task: Associations With Sustained Attention, Margeaux Marissa Gray

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Purpose: Pain is amplified following partial sleep deprivation. Pain has not been evaluated after sleep interruption, when total sleep time is preserved. Sleep interruption, also called sleep fragmentation, is ecologically relevant because it is caused by common sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea [OSA], Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome [UARS] and Periodic Limb Movements Disorder [PLMD]. The Sleep Continuity Hypothesis posits that the restorative effects of sleep are related to sleep quality in addition to quantity. With this study, my goal was to evaluate whether sleep fragmentation affected pain threshold and/or tolerance by systematically fragmenting the sleep of otherwise healthy …

Data Conversion Within Energy Constrained Environments, Brandon M. Kelly Jan 2017

Data Conversion Within Energy Constrained Environments, Brandon M. Kelly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Within scientific research, engineering, and consumer electronics, there is a multitude of new discrete sensor-interfaced devices. Maintaining high accuracy in signal quantization while staying within the strict power-budget of these devices is a very challenging problem. Traditional paths to solving this problem include researching more energy-efficient digital topologies as well as digital scaling.;This work offers an alternative path to lower-energy expenditure in the quantization stage --- content-dependent sampling of a signal. Instead of sampling at a constant rate, this work explores techniques which allow sampling based upon features of the signal itself through the use of application-dependent analog processing. This …

Protein And Peptide Gas-Phase Structure Investigation Using Collision Cross Section Measurements And Hydrogen Deuterium Exchange, Mahdiar Khakinejad Jan 2017

Protein And Peptide Gas-Phase Structure Investigation Using Collision Cross Section Measurements And Hydrogen Deuterium Exchange, Mahdiar Khakinejad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Protein and peptide gas-phase structure analysis provides the opportunity to study these species outside of their explicit environment where the interaction network with surrounding molecules makes the analysis difficult [1]. Although gas-phase structure analysis offers a unique opportunity to study the intrinsic behavior of these biomolecules [2-4], proteins and peptides exhibit very low vapor pressures [2]. Peptide and protein ions can be rendered in the gas-phase using electrospray ionization (ESI) [5]. There is a growing body of literature that shows proteins and peptides can maintain solution structures during the process of ESI and these structures can persist for a few …

Selected Topics In Image Super-Resolution: Guided Image And Learning Representation, Wentian Zhou Jan 2017

Selected Topics In Image Super-Resolution: Guided Image And Learning Representation, Wentian Zhou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Obtaining high-resolution images is a fundamental challenge for many vision related tasks. It is highly desirable to develop effective and efficient super-resolution algorithms to enhance the spatial resolution of acquired images. However, estimating high-resolution images is an ill-posed problem where a large set of possible solutions exist. To make this inverse problem more tractable, it is often necessary to constrain the targeted high-resolution image with a priori information (i.e., in model-based approaches) or to assume the availability of additional training data (i.e., in learning-based approaches). In this dissertation, we propose to (i) use simultaneous-sparse-coding and machine learning techniques to incorporate …

Social Capital Structure And Dynamics In Stream Restoration: A Social Network Analysis Approach To The Upper Shavers Fork, West Virginia, Paul J. Kinder Jr. Jan 2017

Social Capital Structure And Dynamics In Stream Restoration: A Social Network Analysis Approach To The Upper Shavers Fork, West Virginia, Paul J. Kinder Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Streams are common pool resources embedded in watersheds representing complex socio-ecological systems that provide ecological goods and services as well as economic and social benefits. They have been referred to as the lifeblood of civilization. Streams, however, are among the most vulnerable natural resources globally to anthropocentric impacts and are all too often in need of restoration. While the primary objective of stream restoration is to bring back healthy ecological functions, other benefits and outcomes from restoration efforts exist, but are often overlooked. These benefits and outcomes relate to effective natural resource governance systems, which rely on social networks comprised …

Characterization Of Insulin Sensitivity And The Plasma Lipidome In Periparturient Dairy Cows, Sina Saed Samii Jan 2017

Characterization Of Insulin Sensitivity And The Plasma Lipidome In Periparturient Dairy Cows, Sina Saed Samii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the transition from gestation to lactation, dairy cows experience negative energy balance due to an increased demand for energy to support milk production coupled with inadequate energy intake. Energy deficit during the peripartum is associated with the development of insulin resistance which contributes to adipose tissue lipolysis. In turn, elevated free fatty acids (FFA) in circulation increase triacylglycerol (TAG) deposition in liver. This metabolic impairment is known to cause postpartum metabolic diseases including fatty liver and ketosis. Consequently, postpartum metabolic disease can lead to reduced milk production in early lactation, impaired reproductive performance, and increased culling rates. Moreover, cows …

Cardiac And Mitochondrial Dysfunction During Diabetes Mellitus: Examination Of Mitochondrial Import Mechanisms, Danielle Lee Shepherd Jan 2017

Cardiac And Mitochondrial Dysfunction During Diabetes Mellitus: Examination Of Mitochondrial Import Mechanisms, Danielle Lee Shepherd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Approximately 9% of the United States population is diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM), which is comprised of 2 distinct pathologies: type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T1DM, which is caused by insufficient insulin production, affects approximately 5% of diabetic patients, while T2DM results from insulin resistance and affects 95% of all diabetic patients. Within diabetic patients, cardiac complications, such as diabetic cardiomyopathy, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The mitochondrion has been implicated as an underlying factor in the etiology and progression of the cardiac contractile deficits and cardiac failure that accompany DM. …

In most living tissue, cells resident in a complex microenvironment where these cells interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the neighboring cells. The interactions between cells and ECM could regulate the cell behavior. Similar to in vivo, in vitro models have been reported that cells have the ability to sense the nanotopography and stiffness of synthetic substrate and, the variation of substrate nanotopography configuration and stiffness could affect cell phenotype and function.;The first project focused on applying nanotopography to capture circulating tumor cells (CTCs) for early cancer detection. CTCs shed from primary tumors, transport through the bloodstream to distant …

Fish, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) And Natural Resource Injury, Daniel W. Sparks Jan 2017

Fish, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) And Natural Resource Injury, Daniel W. Sparks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) program is authorized by the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) to pursue compensation for injury to, or destruction and loss of, natural resources. Fish are an important "natural resource" present in almost all aquatic ecosystems. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a hazardous substance and have been shown to cause harm to fish (and fish-eating animals). A series of investigations were conducted to determine if "injury" had occurred to creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and in one study, the fish community that creek chubs were a part of, …

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Is Transmissible Among Cells Of The Central Nervous System, Neil T. Sprenkle Jan 2017

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Is Transmissible Among Cells Of The Central Nervous System, Neil T. Sprenkle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Improper protein folding and trafficking are common pathological events observed in various cell types in neurodegenerative diseases. If the protein quality control mechanisms of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) fail to re-establish proteostasis, misfolded proteins accumulate within the lumen of the ER and perturb normal cellular processes. While low-level stimulation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) is considered a beneficial physiological response to transient protein misfolding stress, or ER stress, sustained UPR activation resulting from prolonged ER stress can promote neurotoxicity. The cell-autonomous mechanisms of the UPR have been extensively characterized in the context of neuropathology. Nevertheless, there still remain unanswered …
