Examining Sexual Assault Risk Factors In Female College Athletes, Eric Limegrover
Examining Sexual Assault Risk Factors In Female College Athletes, Eric Limegrover
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sexual assault has been a widely studied occurrence in the United States and continues to be a major problem on college campuses. Recent surveys of college women have found that between 15% and 20% have experienced rape (Flack et al., 2007; McMahon, 2007). Unfortunately, little empirical research has examined specific college populations that maybe at a greater risk of sexual assault. Female college athletes comprise a special population that has been linked to many of the risk factors that are associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing sexual assault. This study examined risk factors associated with sexual assault such as …
Associations Between Co-Parenting, Parenting Stress, And Military Deployment, Brittane L. Todd
Associations Between Co-Parenting, Parenting Stress, And Military Deployment, Brittane L. Todd
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in parenting stress and parenting alliance following a military deployment as a function of the level of co-parenting exhibited during deployment. Two co-parenting groups (high and low) were formed based on co-parenting practices during the deployment. A total of 31 participants comprised the sample (High = 16 and Low = 15) and completed the anonymous online surveys including The Co-Parenting Scale, the Parenting Alliance Measure, and the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form. The groups did not differ in the levels of parenting alliance. Additionally, the low co-parenting group did not report …
Work Adjustment Of Survivors Of Tbi: Subjective Reporting And Indicators Of Work Status., Laura Kay Artman
Work Adjustment Of Survivors Of Tbi: Subjective Reporting And Indicators Of Work Status., Laura Kay Artman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the use of self-reported functional limitations to indicate employment status of traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors after returning to work. This study used data from the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) to examine the utility of self-reported functional limitations in indicating the work status of survivors of TBI. The first research question concerned the most common functional limitation reported by survivors of TBI. The second question asked which functional limitations, if any, could correctly classify the work status of TBI survivors. Results of binary logistic regression suggested that the presence of medical symptoms and emotional dysregulation were reliably …
Perceived Barriers To Persistence Related To Coping Strategies For Undergraduate Nontraditional Learners, Justin C. Griffith
Perceived Barriers To Persistence Related To Coping Strategies For Undergraduate Nontraditional Learners, Justin C. Griffith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nontraditional learners experience a variety of barriers to degree completion. These barriers affect graduation rates and the time it takes to graduate. The method(s) in which the adult learner deals with each barrier will determine if they persist through their program of study or fail to graduate. This study took place at a collaborative campus involving six institutions of higher learning with both a male and female population. Investigation determined, and subsequently reported, internal and external barriers to education persistence for current nontraditional undergraduate learners enrolled in a variety of majors. The investigation then determined and reported coping strategies each …
The Role Of A Sense Of Coherence In The Prevention Of Compassion Fatigue, Mary Eleanor Schaffer
The Role Of A Sense Of Coherence In The Prevention Of Compassion Fatigue, Mary Eleanor Schaffer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Compassion fatigue is defined as the syndrome experienced by a helper who meets the full diagnostic criteria for PTSD with a qualifying criterion A1 event that is not personal experience, but vicarious learning about a traumatic event that was experienced by a person with whom the therapist has a helper/client relationship. The prevention of compassion fatigue is considered important due to the pain associated with distress experienced by the helper and because it may result in a helper who is less able to provide effective treatment for clients. The sense of coherence (salutogenic) model proposed by Aaron Antonovsky (1987) identifies …

Evaluating The Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test Ii As A Diagnostic Screening Instrument Among Clinically Referred Children And Adolescents, Linda R. Marnic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research was designed to investigate the diagnostic utility of the Bender Gestalt II (BGII) test using the Bender Global Scoring System (BGSS) and the Koppitz 2 scoring systems. The scores from these two systems were correlated with scores derived from the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children, Present and Lifetime Edition (KSADS-PL+), a semistructured interview along with Longitudinal Evaluation of all Available Data (LEAD) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Of the 115 children and adolescents who initially participated in the study to assess the validity of the Bender Visual Motor Gestalt II test …
Do Parental Monitoring Strategies, Parental Knowledge, And Adolescent Risk -Taking Differ Based On Family Income And Parental Marital Status? The Role Of Resiliency, Shawn M. Golden-Llewellyn
Do Parental Monitoring Strategies, Parental Knowledge, And Adolescent Risk -Taking Differ Based On Family Income And Parental Marital Status? The Role Of Resiliency, Shawn M. Golden-Llewellyn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adolescents living in low socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors, such as alcohol and other drug use, sexual behavior, and vandalism. Resiliency theory suggests that protective factors could reduce adolescent risk-taking in low SES families. Parental monitoring, parent behaviors involved in tracking their adolescents' whereabouts and activities, tends to be less evident in low SES families. However, it has also been identified as a protective factor in fostering resiliency in adolescents living in high-risk situations. The current study examined group differences in parental knowledge, parental monitoring strategies, and adolescent risk-taking based on two socioeconomic factors, …
Parenting Practices Mediate Parenting Stress And Child Inhibited, Shy Behavior, Ying Dong
Parenting Practices Mediate Parenting Stress And Child Inhibited, Shy Behavior, Ying Dong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Parenting practices were investigated as mediators between parenting stress and child inhibited, shy behavior. Parenting stress was also examined as a moderator between parenting practices and child inhibited, shy behavior. Twenty-seven preschool-aged children (14 boys, 13 girls; mean age =3.5 years) and their mothers (mean age =34 years) participated in the study. Mothers completed a battery of questionnaires to assess parenting stress, parenting practices, and child inhibited, shy behavior. Regression analyses were conducted and it was found that parenting practices do not mediate the relation between parenting stress and inhibited, shy behavior. However, there appears to be an indirect relation …

General And Emotion-Specific Parenting Styles As Predictors Of Children's Internalizing And Externalizing Behavior, Jessica W. Rupenthal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between general parenting practices (e.g., authoritative and authoritarian) and emotion-specific parenting practices (supportive and non-supportive). In addition, a second goal of this study was to examine the manner which general parenting practices and emotion-specific parenting practices collectively contribute to children's displays of fear/anxiety and hostility/aggression. Data were gathered from 27 mothers (mean age = 34 years) and their preschool-aged children (14 boys, 13 girls; mean age = 3.5 years) in Morgantown, West Virginia. The majority (92%) of mothers were White (4% Black, 4% Bi-racial). Mothers completed a series of questionnaires. …

Multicultural Counseling Competencies, White Racial Identity Development, And Color-Blind Racial Attitudes: Differences Across Mental Health Sub-Disciplines., Jacquelyn Monique Strait
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multicultural counseling education in graduate programs is an essential component of clinical training. The exploration of racial identity attitudes and color-blind racial attitudes are starting to become increasingly integrated into multicultural training. The sub-fields of counseling, counseling psychology, and clinical psychology programs have different histories and unique professional identities that set them apart from one another. Limited research exists that explores whether multicultural training differs according to type of graduate training program. The current study examined differences in self-reported multicultural competencies, racial identity development, and color-blind racial attitudes across mental health sub-disciplines. Social desirability was used as a control measure. …
Preparing Medical Students To Counsel For Smoking Cessation, Aubree M. Guiffre
Preparing Medical Students To Counsel For Smoking Cessation, Aubree M. Guiffre
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Smoking is a national epidemic. Medical providers are the first line of defense to help patients reduce or stop smoking. However, smoking cessation counseling does not occur consistently or regularly. Medical providers must be trained to counsel for smoking cessation, with certain areas requiring attention in order for the training to be successful. There is a relationship between medical students who have high rates of self-efficacy related to smoking cessation counseling and high rates of actual counseling. Understanding the relationships between knowledge, skills, attitudes, and the medical school year in training on self-efficacy is important to better prepare medical students …
The Content, Nature, And Ethics Of Pastoral Counseling By West Virginia Baptist Ministers, Nancy Landis-Taylor
The Content, Nature, And Ethics Of Pastoral Counseling By West Virginia Baptist Ministers, Nancy Landis-Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While there is considerable literature available on pastors and the ministry and much writing concerning therapists and secular counseling as well as pastoral counseling, very little has been written concerning counseling by pastors without professional counseling training. This neglected area of research is unfortunate considering many pastors are considered or required to be counselors by their churches and denominations. In addition, there is minimal training in pastoral counseling in most seminaries, leaving many pastors to assume a role for which they may be unprepared. This exploratory study used a self-report instrument specifically developed for this research endeavor to collect information …
Neuropsychological Functioning Of College Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Melanie Ann Nuszkowski
Neuropsychological Functioning Of College Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Melanie Ann Nuszkowski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience significant impairment in multiple life domains not only during childhood, but also throughout their adult lives. While there is no single litmus test for identifying ADHD, neuropsychological tests have been proposed as one means of enhancing identification of ADHD in adults. Theories of ADHD have suggested that deficits in executive functioning underlie the symptom appearance for ADHD; however, meta-analyses have suggested that non-executive functioning skills provide nearly equal discriminatory results. Given the increasing proportion of students with ADHD who are pursuing postsecondary education, the need for further research addressing the impact …
Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles
Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Job satisfaction is considered to be the most important and frequently examined outcome variable in congruence research. The assumption that congruence results in job satisfaction is fundamental to Holland's theory; however, the empirical evidence predominantly indicates that the congruence - job satisfaction correlation is, at best, equivocal. There is a movement within vocational psychology that the congruence construct is “dead†as a viable theoretical concept and that the field should abandon Holland's theory. This idea does not exist without significant argument, however. It has been recognized widely that congruence has not fared better in the empirical research literature because methodological …
Application Of The Emotional Intelligence Construct To College Student Binge Drinking, Jeffrey P. Dulko
Application Of The Emotional Intelligence Construct To College Student Binge Drinking, Jeffrey P. Dulko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although extensive research has been conducted in the area of college binge drinking, relatively little has been done to study differences among alcohol-related consequences. Some initial studies have shown that binge drinking and its consequences are associated with several emotional and interpersonal factors, but there has been no comprehensive examination of these relationships. The theory of emotional intelligence (EI) has been developed recently to study emotional and interpersonal factors as an integrated construct. Research of the relationship between alcohol and EI could provide a valuable base for which to design alcohol prevention programs that target improving emotional and interpersonal deficits …

Smoking As A Maladaptive Method Of Weight Control In Female College Students: Perceived Negative Health Effects And Weight Control Properties., Melissa M. Garrison
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Women are at great risks for smoking-related health consequences. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States. A relationship exists between smoking behavior and weight control in women. Women are more likely to smoke to control their weight and experience higher relapse and dropout rates in smoking cessation programs due to issues of weight concern. The most effective smoking cessation programs are those that contain a cognitive behavioral component that addresses issues of weight concern in conjunction with the standard smoking cessation treatment. However, women are still experiencing high relapse and dropout rates …
Geropsychology Training: A National Survey Of Psychology Trainees., Brian Heath Gordon
Geropsychology Training: A National Survey Of Psychology Trainees., Brian Heath Gordon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study was designed to investigate factors that influence a trainee's pursuit of geropsychology training in effort to identify ways of attracting students to a promising area of research and practice. Researchers have indicated that the older adult population is a heterogeneous group whose numbers will increase significantly over the next 30 years. This changing age demographic is predicted to have a considerable impact on applied psychology by amplifying the need for psychologists trained in providing services to older adults. However, few psychologists have received such training, and few students elect to pursue training in aging. This study utilized a …
Training Experiences And Feelings Of Competency In Utilizing Multicultural Counseling Guidelines., Lauren Rae Krug
Training Experiences And Feelings Of Competency In Utilizing Multicultural Counseling Guidelines., Lauren Rae Krug
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Awareness of changing demographics in the United States has resulted in psychologists paying greater attention to multicultural issues. As a result, in 1993, the APA adopted a set of guidelines, the “Guidelines for Providers of Psychological Services to Ethnic, Linguistic, and Culturally Diverse Populations,†directed to all areas of practice. This document consists of a set of forty brief, action-oriented recommendations. Despite frequent calls for multicultural guidelines and increased attention to multicultural issues, no research has evaluated the use of these guidelines in the context of the treatment setting or examined the impact of training on the incorporation of the …

Examining Therapists' Perceptions Of Confidentiality Across Various Therapeutic Environments, Professional Organizations, And Client Development (An Exploratory Study)., Traci Aaron Berry-Harris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Confidentiality is at the cornerstone of what can make or break the therapeutic relationship. Ethical guidelines are constantly changing, and therapists need to consider their ethical code and other variables including their state law and organizational policy when making decisions related to confidentiality. When working with clients of varying developmental levels, the decisions therapists make regarding confidentiality issues are often not clear. In addition, therapists’ views and experiences concerning confidentiality can play a large role in their decisions concerning obtaining informed consent, duty to protect, and breaching confidentiality in therapy. This exploratory study examined the differences among therapists of diverse …
An Exploratory Study Of Multiple Relationships, Ethical Decision Making And The Identification Of Potentially Harmful Relationships In College Counseling Centers., Leslie M. Frere
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multiple relationships are a concern for the helping professions, yet are often unavoidable. Smaller communities, such as those on college campuses, can make avoiding these types of relationships difficult where professional roles frequently overlap. This research explores the characteristics that may influence an individual’s ability to identify situations where harmful relationships are likely to occur. Respondents included staff members and interns at APA accredited internship sites in college counseling centers across the United States. A survey was mailed to 659 potential respondents with 136 usable responses. The independent variables of age, clinical experience, and amount of received supervision were examined …

This study explored the attitudes pre-service teachers held toward people with disabilities. The researcher conducted a survey methodology study via questionnaire of repeated measures design, using the respondents as their own controls. The goal of this study was to find out if pre-service teachers attitudes toward people with disabilities were affected by descriptive labels such as physicaldisability or mental disability. In other words, did the type of disability affect the pre-service teachers attitudes toward that person? Findings revealed that pre-service teachers had a more negative attitude toward people labeled with mental disabilities, and a more positive attitude toward people labeled …

Counseling And Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students' Perceptions Of Their Faculty's Ethical Behavior, Philip W. Cromer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of psychology doctoral students with regard to their faculty's ethical behavior. A review of the literature suggested that research on the perception of ethical behavior in academia has been narrowly focused on undergraduate students. Furthermore, many of the studies did not convey a comprehensive picture of the students' perceptions of their faculty's ethical behavior. A survey instrument was adapted from a survey used in a study of students' view of their undergraduate professors' actions (Keith-Spiegel, Tabachnick, & Allen, 1993). A randomized sample of 50 accredited counseling psychology doctoral programs and …
