What Are Faculty Perceptions Of Using Emotional Intelligence In Pedagogy And Andragogy?, Eveldora R. Wheeler
What Are Faculty Perceptions Of Using Emotional Intelligence In Pedagogy And Andragogy?, Eveldora R. Wheeler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation study compared the key findings from the first piece of research (pilot study) by allowing further exploration and re-examination of faculties' Perceptions of Using Emotional Intelligence (PUEI) in STEM, Social Sciences, online, and face to face in Pedagogy and Andragogy. This study draws particular attention to the notable rise of emotional issues emerging in differing educational contexts (online and face to face) and the significance of faculty response to their PUEI. Emotional intelligence, a complexity often viewed skeptically is a recurring theme for this study and can greatly benefit higher educational institutions, professional learning environments, and businesses particularly. …
School Climate, Early Adolescent Development, And Identity: Associations With Adjustment Outcomes, Megan Lorraine Smith
School Climate, Early Adolescent Development, And Identity: Associations With Adjustment Outcomes, Megan Lorraine Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early adolescence is a time of risk and exploration for young people. In a period of development marked by increasing independence, young people are still learning the skills necessary for success in their adult lives. Positive development is impacted not only by individual characteristics, but also by the environments and social supports present. Adolescents spend a significant amount of time in schools, thus schools are an important context to study in regards to positive adolescent outcomes. Self Determination Theory (SDT, Deci & Ryan, 2000) posits that the degree to which an individual's basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness …
Building An Understanding: What Motivates Teachers To Use Science In Motion, Karen M. Spuck
Building An Understanding: What Motivates Teachers To Use Science In Motion, Karen M. Spuck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Science education reform documents call for instructional practices that include scientific equipment and materials. Often, these types of resources are inaccessible for schools, especially those which are rural and socio-economically challenged, due largely to budgetary considerations. Science outreach partnerships are able to bridge the gap between what is called for in science education reform documents and the realities of many schools. Science in Motion is a science outreach partnership project located in rural Northwestern Pennsylvania, supported by state funds, that provides equipment, curricular materials, and professional development free of charge for area science educators. Teacher participation in this project is …
Family Distress, First-Generation College Status, And Financial Stress As Predictors Of Alcohol Use In College Students Seeking Mental Health Treatment, Narayan Jeremy Gold
Family Distress, First-Generation College Status, And Financial Stress As Predictors Of Alcohol Use In College Students Seeking Mental Health Treatment, Narayan Jeremy Gold
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Increasing numbers of students have been presenting for mental health treatment on college campuses to address their alcohol use (Gallagher, 2010). The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between presenting alcohol use, family distress, college generational status (first-generation to college or non-first-generation to college), and financial distress. By examining the predictive nature of these variables screening could be improved to help identify and help students who are more at risk of experiencing the negative impact of alcohol use. It was hypothesized that higher levels of family distress, more financial stress, and being a first-generation college student …
The Relation Of Ethnic Identity To Self-Esteem And Academic Self-Concept Of African American Students At A Predominantly White Institution, Drummond Russell Bush
The Relation Of Ethnic Identity To Self-Esteem And Academic Self-Concept Of African American Students At A Predominantly White Institution, Drummond Russell Bush
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Social scientists have challenged professionals and educators alike to develop a better understanding of the influences a predominantly White environment has on the academic and interpersonal experiences of African American college students. This study explored the psychosocial impact of several factors, both dispositional (e.g., ethnic identity, self-esteem, and academic self-concept) and contextual (e.g., racial composition of the institution), for 91 African American college students enrolled at a predominantly White institution in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Pearson correlations indicated the other group orientation sub-factor of ethnic identity is positively correlated with self-esteem and academic self-concept. Multiple regression analyses …
Same-Race Role-Models And Self-Efficacy Among African American College Students, Rueben Brock
Same-Race Role-Models And Self-Efficacy Among African American College Students, Rueben Brock
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent & Brown, 1996) offers an understanding of career interest, goals, and performance. It is based, in large part, on the social cognitive construct of self-efficacy (Bandura, 1986). The theory offers a framework for the interactive influence that self-efficacy, outcomes expectations, and personal goals have upon each other in the formation of a person's career aspirations. Within SCCT and the Social Learning Theory that it is based on, there is the presumption that modeling is a key component of learning (Bandura, 1986). The purpose of this study was to explore the impact that same-race role-models …
Spirituality, Help-Seeking Attitude, And Black Women: A Qualitative Study, Pamela Lashe Jackson
Spirituality, Help-Seeking Attitude, And Black Women: A Qualitative Study, Pamela Lashe Jackson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A semi-structured interview was used to survey help-seeking attitude via questions about spirituality, therapy, and the connections between the two. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to provide a framework for understanding how these factors potentially effect professional help-seeking attitudes in Black women and the role spirituality plays in developing help-seeking attitudes and the potential effect on professional psychological help. Ten interviews were conducted with Black women who lived or went to church in Akron, Ohio. Data from nine study participants were used and seven super-ordinate themes were found. The themes identified were as follows: 1) awareness and access; 2) …
Psychologists Working In State Psychiatric Hospitals: An Exploration Of Factors Related To Work Engagement, Valerie Ignatenko
Psychologists Working In State Psychiatric Hospitals: An Exploration Of Factors Related To Work Engagement, Valerie Ignatenko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The role of psychologists working in state psychiatric hospitals has been ambiguous throughout most of the last century. State psychiatric hospitals continue to provide care to patients with severe mental illness, and psychologists remain employed in such settings. Eight factors related to work engagement for psychologists in state psychiatric hospitals were explored, including geographic region, length of time in the field, length of time at the hospital, number of clients seen per week, number of supervision hours per month, job ambiguity, autonomy, and perceived social support. Results found that psychologists are engaged in their work in state hospitals, and three …
The Roles Of Resilience And Perceived Discrimination In Sexual Minority Identity Integration, Peter Alexander Brown
The Roles Of Resilience And Perceived Discrimination In Sexual Minority Identity Integration, Peter Alexander Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although researchers and theorists have long moved away from public disclosure of sexual minority identity (i.e. coming out) as the theoretical apex of lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identity development, it is still considered an important process of overall identity integration. Unfortunately public disclosure of sexual minority identity may be dependent upon the social environment in which disclosure occurs. Given the variable nature of social contexts, public disclosure across domains of social functioning may be problematic. Previous research has suggested that disclosure is in part more or less likely to occur based on individual appraisal of discriminative experiences (Meyer, 2013). …
Disclosure And Perceptions Of Social Support In Male Victims Of Child Sexual Abuse, Abigail Leslie
Disclosure And Perceptions Of Social Support In Male Victims Of Child Sexual Abuse, Abigail Leslie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Child sexual abuse of males is a serious issue that is largely hidden in the United States because many victims never disclose the abuse. The literature review highlights the prevalence and severity of child sexual abuse of males and the negative effects non-disclosure has on the psychological well-being of the victim. The need to study factors affecting whether or not a male victim discloses is stressed, and social support is proposed to be an influencing factor. This study explored the impact of social support on disclosure status for male victims of child sexual abuse in parts of West Virginia and …
Supervisee Experiences Of Impression Management, The Supervisory Working Alliance, And Counseling Self-Efficacy, Jennifer M. Haist
Supervisee Experiences Of Impression Management, The Supervisory Working Alliance, And Counseling Self-Efficacy, Jennifer M. Haist
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Supervision plays a vital role in fostering competent, ethical and effective counseling psychologists. However, studies have shown that supervisees act in ways that counteract the benefits of supervision. Trainees manage supervisor impressions to the detriment of their professional growth; they withhold information that would help supervisors promote learning, clarify misunderstandings, gain insight into supervisee weaknesses and strengths, and provide feedback that would enhance supervisee competence. Supervisee nondisclosure is a particularly prevalent impression management behavior documented in the supervision literature (Hill, Thompson, & Corbett, 1992; Ladany et al., 1996). It and other forms of impression management may be particularly related to …
Examining Childbirth-Related Trauma And Its Effect On Maternal Self-Efficacy And Appraisal Of Infant Temperament, Teresa B. Stire
Examining Childbirth-Related Trauma And Its Effect On Maternal Self-Efficacy And Appraisal Of Infant Temperament, Teresa B. Stire
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is estimated that 3--9% of women will meet full diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth, with another 20 to 40% being partially symptomatic for the disorder. While precedents and associated factors leading to childbirth related PTSD have been fairly well researched, the postpartum outcomes such as the mother's perception of herself in the parenting role, and her appraisal of her infant's temperament have been far less studied. Other psychiatric disorders have been linked to lower estimations of parental self efficacy and more negative views of infant temperament. This study examined childbirth related trauma and its effect …
The Effects Of A Happiness Intervention On Measures Of Psychological Well-Being And Motivation To Quit Smoking Among Smokers With Depressive Symptoms, Kelly A. Bailey
The Effects Of A Happiness Intervention On Measures Of Psychological Well-Being And Motivation To Quit Smoking Among Smokers With Depressive Symptoms, Kelly A. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Depressed smokers are a group of individuals whose health and overall functioning can benefit from interventions aimed to enhance well-being. Researchers have recently found significant relations between positive affect and smoking cessation success, and between low affect and smoking relapse, and unsuccessful abstinence (Cook et al., 2010; Leventhal et al., 2008, 2009; Niemiec, 2010). The examination of the effects of happiness interventions for a population considered to be “underserved” has only just begun (Borrelli, 2010, p. 2; Kahler et al., 2013). In this study, the independent variable was a happiness intervention and the outcome variables were psychological well-being and motivation …
The Utilization Of Adventure Based Programming To Foster Posttraumatic Growth Within A Veteran Population: A Mixed Methods Study, Joseph A. Wassif
The Utilization Of Adventure Based Programming To Foster Posttraumatic Growth Within A Veteran Population: A Mixed Methods Study, Joseph A. Wassif
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is a lack of research exploring interventions that promote posttraumatic growth with veterans. The current project represents a first attempt to explore posttraumatic growth among veterans who participate in a strength-based program specifically designed for the healthy reintegration and socialization of returning members of the armed services. Through the use of a mixed methods approach, I hoped to show that veterans would report increases in posttraumatic growth following participation in an Outward Bound Veterans Program. Veterans that completed the program were compared to a waitlist control, which consisted of other military personnel that had signed up for, but had …
Cultural Identity, Vocational Development, And The Meaning Of Work Among Appalachian Coal Miners: A Qualitative Study, Susan Chamberlain
Cultural Identity, Vocational Development, And The Meaning Of Work Among Appalachian Coal Miners: A Qualitative Study, Susan Chamberlain
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study I explore what coal mining means to underground miners in Appalachia, and how these meanings interact with participants' cultural and vocational identities. Using narrative data from eight underground coal miners, the study investigates the connections between cultural values, career, and personality. These connections are singularly intertwined in Appalachia, where economic and social landscapes have been heavily influenced by coal mining for over a century. The resulting relationships have blurred the lines of identity among career, family, and community. This qualitative study is based on data from semi-structured interviews; participant language was analyzed using grounded theory to create …

Differences In Interpersonal Problems Among Bereaved Vs. Non-Bereaved College Students: The Impact Of Loneliness And Social Inhibition, Adam M. Moller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explored the differences in loneliness and social inhibition between parentally bereaved and non-bereaved college students. Participants from West Virginia and Montana State universities were recruited through flyers, newspaper advertisements, and Craigslist.com. Those who volunteered were directed to a website to complete an online survey that included basic demographic information, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Socially Inhibited subscale of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-64. Bereavement status (bereaved vs. non-bereaved) and gender of participant (male vs. female) were the independent variables in the study. Loneliness and social inhibition were the dependent variables. A MANOVA was conducted to explore the …
When The Sacred Hurts: Using Grounded Theory Analysis To Understand How Former Members Experienced Abuse Of Religious Authority In Christian Groups, Karianne D. P. Bilsky
When The Sacred Hurts: Using Grounded Theory Analysis To Understand How Former Members Experienced Abuse Of Religious Authority In Christian Groups, Karianne D. P. Bilsky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The topic of spirituality has recently enjoyed increased popularity within the field of psychology (Pargament, 2007). However, there is an aspect of spirituality that the scientific literature has only started to address -- trauma that occurs through religious manipulation. The current study utilizes a qualitative research design to develop an empirical definition and preliminary model of abuse of religious authority (ARA). Seventeen former members of Christian groups were interviewed by employing a semi-structured interview, and the results were analyzed using grounded theory analysis. All participants reported that the negative aspects of their experience outweighed the positive aspects. Participants provided a …
Cross Cultural Relationships Of Depression, Attachment Styles, And Quality Of Romantic Relationships: Cultural Difference Between Taiwanese/Chinese And American College Students, Yi-An Lo Burleson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Relationship quality has been determined to be a positive factor in the treatment of depression (Brown, 2000; Fagan, 2009). Although the importance of marriage has been broadly studied, little research has investigated correlations among relationship quality, depressive moods, and attachment styles. Although the prevalence of depressive moods has been documented within populations of Taiwanese/Chinese international students and American college students (Wei et al., 2007), Wang and Mallinckrodt (2006) found that definitions of ideal attachment differ in these groups. Furthermore, researchers have not yet investigated the effect of cultural differences and attachment styles on the interactions between relationship quality and depressive …
Crisis As Opportunity: Personality Constructs And Erikson Identity Development, Christopher E. Ruth
Crisis As Opportunity: Personality Constructs And Erikson Identity Development, Christopher E. Ruth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Identity development theory suggests that the developmental trajectory from childhood through young adulthood involves a movement from exploration towards eventual tentative commitment to adult values, beliefs, and career goals. Currently little research has focused on the impact of personality traits commonly studied in personal counseling and career work with collegeattending emerging adults on the process of identity development. This study examined the predictive quality of personality preferences on Erickson's and Marcia's operationalization of identity status. More specifically, do particular personality preferences derived from the Myers- Briggs Typology Indicator more often result in particular Eriksonian identity statuses (i.e., foreclosed, diffused, moratorium …
Institutional Integration As A Predictor Of Success In At-Risk First-Year College Students, Jan-Erin Miller
Institutional Integration As A Predictor Of Success In At-Risk First-Year College Students, Jan-Erin Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As earning a postsecondary degree becomes more necessary in the preparation for future employment, many of this nation's four-year colleges and universities are admitting underprepared students who are at-risk for poor academic performance and early departure from the institutions. There are a myriad of factors and characteristics that can cause students to be labeled at-risk, including being a first-generation student, coming from a lower socioeconomic environment, and having certain personality traits. At-risk college students have higher incidence of departure from the institutions, which can produce emotional distress and long-lasting financial obligations. Over the past thirty years, research in the area …
Resilient First-Generation College Students: A Multiple Regression Analysis Examining The Impact Of Optimism, Academic Self-Efficacy, Social Support, Religiousness, And Spirituality On Perceived Resilience, David F. Davino
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
First-generation college students (FGCS) have been identified as an at-risk population as evidenced by higher attrition rates, lower socio-economic backgrounds, and are less engaged in the college environment when compared to their college peers. Yet despite these stressors, many will graduate college demonstrating their resilience. This study examined optimism, academic self-efficacy, social support, religiousness, and spirituality as potential protective factors for FGCS who perceive themselves to be resilient. Two-way effects were examined in order to determine if any two-way combination of the five protective factors explored in this study explained more of the variance in perceived resilience of FGCS. Demographic …
Degrees Of Disordered Eating And Perfectionism In College Students: A Comparison Of Sex And Athletic Status, Melinda K. Graham-Hinners
Degrees Of Disordered Eating And Perfectionism In College Students: A Comparison Of Sex And Athletic Status, Melinda K. Graham-Hinners
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most research on disordered eating behaviors and body image concerns have focused on females, as females tend to have a higher prevalence of these behaviors than males; however, over the past decade there has been an increase in the number of males presenting with disordered eating behaviors. There has been a debate over whether eating disorders should be viewed as only diagnosable versus non-diagnosable or through a continuum model, with people being categorized as having a diagnosable eating disorder, disordered eating behaviors, or no eating disorder symptoms. Numerous recent studies have supported examining eating disorders from a continuum perspective. An …
The Role Of Tobacco Cessation Counseling In Physical Therapist Practice And Education, Rose M. Pignataro
The Role Of Tobacco Cessation Counseling In Physical Therapist Practice And Education, Rose M. Pignataro
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this research was to promote the use of evidence-based TCC guidelines in physical therapist practice and education by applying principles of knowledge translation as defined by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). According to the NIDDR, research should be framed so that knowledge gained is ultimately applied in a manner geared towards improving the lives of people with disabilities.;Study 1 resulted in a perspectives paper which established a sound clinical rationale for the inclusion of TCC as a component of physical therapist practice. This rationale is based on the pathophysiologic effects of smoking on …
Comparing U.S. And International Medical Graduates' Treatment Of Chronic Diseases: Utilization Of Psychosocial Interventions., Susan E. Jarquin
Comparing U.S. And International Medical Graduates' Treatment Of Chronic Diseases: Utilization Of Psychosocial Interventions., Susan E. Jarquin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic disease care places significant pressure on healthcare provider resources, often requiring the hiring of physicians trained abroad to meet these demands. International medical graduates are on trend to become the primary suppliers of chronic disease care in the U.S. Consequently, there is a need to assess how physicians trained abroad care for patients with chronic diseases. The purpose of this exploratory survey study was to determine whether international and U.S. medical graduates differ in their use of three specific psychosocial interventions when caring for patients suffering from chronic diseases. Medical residents in U.S. allopathic family medicine and internal medicine …
Variables That Predict Burnout Among Sex Offender Treatment Providers: Work Setting, Gender, Work Hours, Jennifer Pravlik
Variables That Predict Burnout Among Sex Offender Treatment Providers: Work Setting, Gender, Work Hours, Jennifer Pravlik
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Psychological treatment of the sexual offender population continues to be an arduous task for therapists. There is evidence that many therapists will experience burnout at some point during their careers. Providing treatment in a burned out state can cause harm to the therapist, client, and community (Barnett, Baker, Elman, & Schoener, 2007). It is necessary to determine the variables that influence burnout in order to increase awareness and to address the variables at an organization and personal level in order to identify therapists that may be at risk of burnout. In this I study examined the relationship of variables identified …
The Relationship Between Temperament And Facets Of Creativity, Clark Daniel Pinson
The Relationship Between Temperament And Facets Of Creativity, Clark Daniel Pinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purported association between mental illness and creativity has been most heavily researched in individuals diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. The bipolar disorders have been conceptualized as a spectrum of disorders that range from problematic and labile affect to different types of temperament. Temperament has classically been defined as elements of personality that are heritable, stable, based on emotion, and uninfluenced by socio-cultural learning. Contemporary literature suggested that at least some aspects of creativity may be enhanced by an affective range that has been best characterized by the milder part of the bipolar spectrum of disorders. The primary inquiry of …

Relationship Between Fidelity And Dose Of Human Patient Simulation, Critical Thinking Skills, And Knowledge In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Rosella I. Beebe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined the relationship between human patient simulation (HPS), critical thinking skills, and knowledge acquisition after HPS was integrated across the curriculum of an associate degree nursing program to determine if differences existed in critical thinking and knowledge of students based on the fidelity of HPS used and amount of student exposure to HPS. The effectiveness of HPS when used as a teaching strategy in lieu of traditional clinical experiences was examined to determine the impact on critical thinking and knowledge in relation to the percentage of traditional clinical experiences substituted with HPS. The National League for Nurses' (NLN) …

Child Temperament As An Influence On Maternal Emotion Socialization In Preschool-Aged Children, Stephanie L. Clarke
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relation between child temperament and maternal emotion socialization practices (e.g., supportive/non-supportive). Data were gathered from mothers of 3- and 4-year-olds; 51 mothers participated anonymously via Facebook, and 33 were drawn from a larger study on emotion socialization. Mothers completed a series of questionnaires, including a demographics questionnaire; the Child Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ; Putnam & Rothbart, 2000) to assess maternal perception of child temperament, and the Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale (CCNES; Fabes, Poulin, Eisenberg, & Madden-Derdich, 2002) to examine maternal responsiveness to children's emotions. Pearson r correlation tests were …
Behavior That Hurts: Theoretical Orientation, Terminology, And Diagnosis Of Self-Injury, Susannah C. Rowan Flamm
Behavior That Hurts: Theoretical Orientation, Terminology, And Diagnosis Of Self-Injury, Susannah C. Rowan Flamm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Self-injurious behavior prevalence continues to rise in both adolescent and adult non-clinical populations and within adolescent and adult clinical populations. Despite a large volume of literature regarding the antecedents and functions of self-injury, exploration of clinician factors in regard to these clients is sparse. This study examined the associations among 346 doctoral level clinicians' theoretical orientations, preferred terminology to describe self-injurious behaviors, and preferred diagnoses for clients who engage in self-injury. Therapist variables such as age, years in practice, and gender were examined for their association with terminology and diagnostic preferences. Chi-square analyses were conducted for the two-way interactions and …
Weightism: Can Personality Characteristics Predict Prejudice In College Students?, John E. Damm
Weightism: Can Personality Characteristics Predict Prejudice In College Students?, John E. Damm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Bias toward individuals who are obese is one of the last bastions of permissible prejudice. The people who are obese report discrimination in a variety of settings; they experience it with families, employers, teachers, and health-care professionals. Research regarding obesity bias indicates that attribution of personal responsibility is correlated with negative attitudes toward individuals who are obese. Attribution of causality and resulting bias has been linked to specific personality characteristics, specifically the Big Five traits Agreeableness and Openness to Experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and obesity bias. Students at a large …
