The Relationship Between Faculty Nativity And Role Conflict, Role Ambiguity And Job Satisfaction Among Nursing Faculty., Patricia Ann Johnston
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the relationship between faculty nativity and role conflict, role ambiguity and job satisfaction. Role conflict and role ambiguity were measured by Rizzo, House and Lutzman's instrument. Job satisfaction was measured in six areas using Smith, Kendall and Hulin's revised Job Descriptive Index. Inbred faculty were defined as those faculty holding a nursing degree from the employing institution and comprised 31% of the sample. Questionnaires were sent to faculty at 21 accredited schools of nursing in eight states in the southern United States. Demographically, the faculty were female (98%), young (73% under age 50), and in the lower …

Curricula Of Selected Korean Ethnic Schools In The United States: A Curriculum Assessment Study., Minza Kim Boo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Demographic, historical, and educational data on Korean ethnic education programs in the United States posed some possible curricular problems concerning such questions as: "How well did Korean ethnic schools define the curricular purposes, organize the curricular content, select the curricular methodology, and practice the evaluation of curricular outcomes?" Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of Korean ethnic schools in terms of whether the Korean ethnic school curricula used essential curricular principles and guidelines; and whether the Korean ethnic education programs were implemented to respond to multi-dimensional ethnic needs of Korean immigrants. The procedures …

A Study Of The Women In W. S. Gilbert's "Patience", "Iolanthe", And "Princess Ida"; Or, The Folly Of Being Feminist., Cheryl Conover Hoffman
A Study Of The Women In W. S. Gilbert's "Patience", "Iolanthe", And "Princess Ida"; Or, The Folly Of Being Feminist., Cheryl Conover Hoffman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In his three operas of the early 1880s--Patience, Iolanthe, and Princess Ida--W. S. Gilbert directs his wit at free-thinking women. Although the overt subjects of these operas (Aestheticism, the reform of the House of Lords, and women's education) have received much critical attention, the subplot--the conflict between men and women--has not. In all three, the tension in the plot is the result of the sexual struggle; and, in all three, Gilbert trivializes the feminist idea of woman's independence and advocates the Separate Spheres theory, which postulated that equality between the sexes was not possible because of the God-ordained biological difference …

Eighty intermediate level subjects of a private elementary school in Weirton, West Virginia were administered the Group Embedded Figures Test (Oltman, Raskin & Witkin, 1971) and the Learning Style Inventory (Dunn, …
John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt
John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
From an investigation of the entire published works of John Dewey, as well as much of his personal correspondence, this dissertation described and analyzed Dewey's concept of the child. It was discovered that Dewey's concept evolved through interactions with his family and, to a lesser extent, his social milieu. Despite some inconsistencies in his writings about the child, arising primarily from his attempts to persuade his audience to make societal changes benefiting the child, Dewey developed a cohesive, comprehensive concept--a concept which emphasized a view of the child as an active, growing being. Ten aspects of the child were examined …

Relaxation Training With Children: A Test Of The Specific Effects Hypothesis., Floyd Daniel Armstrong
Relaxation Training With Children: A Test Of The Specific Effects Hypothesis., Floyd Daniel Armstrong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Schwartz and his colleagues (Davidson & Schwartz, 1976; Schwartz, Davidson, & Goleman, 1978) have argued that there are specific types of relaxation responses that occur in response to different types of relaxation training. Various techniques believed to produce cognitive or somatic forms of relaxation have been identified, but the empirical evidence in support of the specific effects hypothesis is mixed with adults and absent with children. This study was designed to test whether techniques labeled somatic (progressive muscle relaxation) and cognitive (visual imagery training) would produce different patterns of reductions in physiological, self-report, and performance measures of somatic and cognitive …

The refined list of management principles was …
A Comparison Of An Active And A Passive Relaxation Procedure For The Management Of General Anxiety (Relaxation, Stress Management, Sensory Awareness)., Jeffrey Alan Knight
A Comparison Of An Active And A Passive Relaxation Procedure For The Management Of General Anxiety (Relaxation, Stress Management, Sensory Awareness)., Jeffrey Alan Knight
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Relaxation training procedures have been used increasingly over the last 20 years as a treatment intervention for generalized anxiety. Treatment of anxiety is often approached from the broader perspective of stress management training using relaxation procedures as components of the treatment protocol. Historically, active relaxation techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation, have been employed in stress management programs, although passive relaxation techniques, those not requiring muscle tension release, have also proven effective in reducing symptoms of tension and anxiety. The present study was designed to compare the efficacy of a clinically proven, but empirically untested, passive relaxation procedure called Sensory …
A Functional Assessment Of Heterosocial Initiation Behaviors In Adults (Social Competence, Effectiveness, External Validity)., Thomas Michael Dilorenzo
A Functional Assessment Of Heterosocial Initiation Behaviors In Adults (Social Competence, Effectiveness, External Validity)., Thomas Michael Dilorenzo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of the present investigation was to incorporate the extant literature in the area of social competence in an attempt to assess the relationship between empirically defined classes of behavior or strategies and ratings of effectiveness, liking, and skill with adults. Female subjects were asked to listen to and rate audiotapes of dyadic interactions of males and females. The dyads' verbal behavior had been manipulated experimentally such that each "actor" exhibited one of two strategies in each audiotaped interaction. The male actor exhibited either an "other enhancement" or a "positive self presentation" intiation strategy. The female actor either encouraged …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which committees effectively determined institutional governance conditions. More specifically, answers to the following questions were sought: (1) to what extent did those committees specified in the collective bargaining agreement between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COMMONWEALTH) and the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) effectively determine institutional governance in the Pennsylvania State Colleges and University System; (2) what were the conditions that tended to militate for or against effective governance involvement via committees specified in the collective bargaining agreement; (3) in what ways were the committees at …
A Reassessment Of Julian Hawthorne Through Consideration Of His Short Fiction, John William Teel
A Reassessment Of Julian Hawthorne Through Consideration Of His Short Fiction, John William Teel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Julian Hawthorne, the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne, was once a popular writer whose fictional works include twenty-four novels and over eighty short stories. Though he was highly regarded by many critics in his time, he is little known today, even among scholars specializing in American literature. The few studies of Hawthorne written in this century generally concur with an opinion commonly expressed by Hawthorne's contemporaries: that he wrote too rapidly to produce carefully crafted novels though he was more successful with his short stories and novellas. Most of his stories have never been collected or anthologized, however, so there has …
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study approaches the problem of the relation of man and nature in William Wordsworth's The Prelude from the phenomenological perspective developed in Martin Heidegger's early work, Being and Time. More specifically, I attempt to work out a detailed comparison between Wordsworth's description of nature as an environing and supporting presence and Heidegger's notion of "world" as an irreducible component of human existence. In contrast to most philosophically oriented critics of The Prelude, who locate Wordsworth's ideas within the metaphysical context of English empiricism or continental transcendentalism and idealism, I argue that the structure of experience presented in ThePrelude actually …
The Widow In Restoration Comedy., Beverly Cardwell Debord
The Widow In Restoration Comedy., Beverly Cardwell Debord
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The widow appears frequently on the Restoration comic stage, and yet, almost without exception, she provokes laughter only at her own expense. In the thirty-eight comedies examined in this study, widows suffer various types of abuse, from witty derision to physical assault. However, in virtually every instance--whether in her treatment by fellow characters or in her depiction by the playwright--the widow's exploitation involves her financial situation. Moreover, this common factor is a key to understanding why widowhood, essentially tragic, became comic during the Restoration. Traditionally an unwelcome reminder of death and the power of sexuality, even before the Restoration widows …
