Harold Nicolson And Alfred Duff Cooper: The Historian As Politician In The Age Of Appeasement, 1935-1939., John Beecher Shorrock
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several months after the signing of the armistice ending the First World War, a policy was adopted in Great Britain which aimed at the pacification of Europe. It was not new or altruistic. It was a policy grounded in the legitimate assumption that a peaceful reconciliation of differences among nations would prevent future generations from falling into a holocaust similar to that which had convulsed Europe between 1912* and 1918. It was a noble policy; mention of its name did not provoke illusions of cowardice, treachery, or betrayal. It was called appeasement,

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the relative contribution of nonverbal behavior to the judged level of empathy communicated in a role-played counseling interview. Thirty master's level counselor candidates rated thirty-two combinations of eye contact, body orientation, trunk lean, hand gesture, and positive head nod, with standardized interaction distance and medium level verbal empathy message on a modification of the Truax-Carkhuff Empathy Scale. The study employed a 2x2x2x2x2 repeated measures analysis of variance design. Results showed that two of the main effects and fifteen interactions significantly accounted for the variability of the subejcts' ratings. The results support the conclusion that empathy is communicated …

The Effects Of Contingent--Noncontingent Structured Environments On Selected Behaviors Of Federal Youth Offenders., Paul Richard Thomas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Correctional treatment programming for juvenile offenders has been characterized as being without focus and lacking any clear conception of treatment goal or program objectives (More, 1973). The basic lack of widespread agreement on such fundamental assumptions as program goals, objectives, methodology, and definitions is further confused by not having an objectively derived data base from which different correctional programs could be derived or to which programming effectiveness could be compared.

Factors Related To Children's In-Tune Singing Abilities., Robert Stewart Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The growth of music education within the public schools of America and the philosophy which reflects its goals and objectives should serve as a measure of the desirability for correction of intonation within the elementary schools. If this is the philosophy of music education and elementary students are to develop an esthetic appreciation of music, a performance skill should be taught. This skill should aid in teaching a knowledge of literature and an understanding of the organization of music, which lead to the achievement of musicality.

It was the purpose of this investigation to study the use of concrete and abstract stimuli in the development of perceptual abilities of disadvantaged five year old children. Hypotheses to be tested were (1) that subjects who were presented a curriculum of concrete stimuli initially and progressing to stimuli if abstraction would have greater perceptual development than those subjects who were presented a curriculum of abstract stimuli, and (2) that subjects receiving curricula of concrete and abstract stimuli would have greater perceptual development than subjects serving as the Control Group. Subjects (N=44) were enrolled in Head Start and received the …
Equivalence Of Personality Structure In Leary's Interpersonal System Of Diagnosis., James Leroy Truckenmiller
Equivalence Of Personality Structure In Leary's Interpersonal System Of Diagnosis., James Leroy Truckenmiller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Leary system of interpersonal diagnosis was introduced in its entirety during 1957 as a descriptive alternative to traditional psychiatric assessment involving interpersonal behavior. It attempts to provide a conceptual and measurement framework by removing rating discrepancies among data sources from the realm of undesirable distortions vis-a-vis "True" traits, and by relating these discrepancies to processes such as conflict and identification in an operational fashion. The basic premise supporting operational definitions such as conflict and identification requires that the structural interrelations of interpersonal variables be similar regardless of the data source from which obtained. If this premise were to hold, …

An Analysis Of The Transformation Process Affecting The Stated Instructional Goals Of The West Virginia University School Of Nursing, Charles Joseph Staropoli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study will be to identify and explain the conceptual syndrome operating in the transformation by which the stated instructional goals, as established by the School of Nursing at West Virginia University, become the real instructional goals as pursued by the teaching staff of the School of Nursing. This study will not establish that these concepts caused the transformation, but will only identify the concepts through inductive analysis of the data. The identification of these concepts and their subsequent operationalization is the necessary first step if productive experimental research into the causality of goal transformation is to …
