The Instructional Control Of Problem Solving: Emergent Relations And Blending Of Repertoires., Harold E. Lobo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the effects of strategic and tactical instructions on emergent stimulus relations. Sixteen female college students completed a linear-series baseline training with three potential equivalence classes of five members each. After successfully completing baseline training, participants completed repeated blocks of testing with probes for all possible emerging relations. Six participants performed below 70% correct on these probes. Three of these participants received subsequent training with a strategic instruction, whereas the remaining three participants were trained with tactical instructions. Afterwards, these six participants resumed repeated testing. Performance of participants who received the strategic instruction improved significantly, with correct responding …

The Hospitalized Adolescent: Fears, Stressors, And Coping Skills., Lora L. Garlitz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This paper presents the findings of an investigation to determine whether of not there is a difference in hospitalized adolescents and non-hospitalized adolescents. The participants were 60 adolescents between the ages of 12 to 18 years. Their fears, stressors, and coping skills were evaluated by using three instruments: a 35-item self-report test on coping; a 108-item self-report test on fears; and a 15-item self-report test on stress. The results revealed that on specific measures hospitalized adolescents exhibited a statistically significantly less degree of emotional upset during hospitalization than did the community sample. Implications of these results in determining procedures to …
Juvenile Delinquency And The Acceptance Of Offence-Specific Neutralizations., Jared Wharram
Juvenile Delinquency And The Acceptance Of Offence-Specific Neutralizations., Jared Wharram
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between offense-specific neutralizations and delinquency. Analysis of data from the final wave of the Evaluation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Program in the United States (1995-1999) reveals that youth are likely to accept neutralizations for behaviors they have committed. For example, when controlling for other variables theoretically linked to delinquency, neutralization of lying was found to be significantly associated with lying, while neutralization of stealing was found to be significantly associated with stealing and neutralization of violence was found to be significantly associated with violent behavior. The …
Community Factors And Educational Attainment In A North Appalachian Area., Olena L. Welling
Community Factors And Educational Attainment In A North Appalachian Area., Olena L. Welling
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Regression analysis suggests that district-to-district differences in high school completion rates are positively related to post-high school economic and educational opportunities. High school completion rates are negatively related to the costs of schools. Dropping out of high school is the students’ attempt to rationally respond to their environment and social circumstances. Thus, dropping out can be interpreted as a rational phenomenon. Students are calculating, often unself-consciously, the costs of staying in school versus the returns to education. Students are acting rational in responding to the constraints and opportunities of their social circumstances. District-level high school completion rates were regressed on …
A Study Of Persuasion, Propaganda And The Effectiveness Of Messages., Kelly M. Saunders
A Study Of Persuasion, Propaganda And The Effectiveness Of Messages., Kelly M. Saunders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study of persuasive and propagandistic messages explores the differences and similarities among the two, as well as elements necessary for success, using previous research in the field. In addition, this report includes an analysis of the diffusion, framing, placement within newspaper articles, and effects of news content relating to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth disseminated during the 2004 Presidential campaign. The results of this study suggest a need for greater scrutiny among reporters regarding messages distributed by interest groups.

Unbalanced Frame: A Content Analysis Of Four Main American Newspapers And Their Coverage Of Colombia And The Drug Issue., Olga Elena Velez Galvis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study used content analysis of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald and Dallas Morning news and analyzed their coverage of Colombia and the drug issue during 1993, 1998 and 2003. The main purpose was to observe how these publications reported on this topic over that specific period of time. Findings showed prevalence of episodic stories over the thematic ones. These papers primarily presented episodic news coverage on Colombia and their drugs, which exhibited mainly a negative tone. On the other hand, thematic news coverage on Colombia and its drugs were more positive than the episodic, since …
Understanding The Coach -Athlete Dyad: The Impact Of Educational Interventions On Perceptions And Psychosocial Variables., Lindsey C. Blom
Understanding The Coach -Athlete Dyad: The Impact Of Educational Interventions On Perceptions And Psychosocial Variables., Lindsey C. Blom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With the understanding that coaches have a direct impact on the athletes with whom they work (Libman, 1998) and with the knowledge that this influence is complex (Weiss & Hayashi, 1996), it can be assumed that coaching education is of the utmost importance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the PASS IT Back program developed to help coaches address their specific players' perceptions and preferences for the coach-athlete relationship. Nine boys' high school soccer coaches and their respective teams were randomly placed in one of three categories: (1) control group, (2) feedback group receiving information about players' perceptions …
Students' Propensity To Ask Questions: Do Cognitive Flexibility, Teacher Self-Disclosure, Student Motives To Communicate, And Affective Learning Influence Question Asking In The Classroom?, Jacob L. Cayanus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this study was to examine if cognitive flexibility, teacher self-disclosure, student motives to communicate and affective learning influence question asking in the classroom. Results from semi-structured interviews indicated that students ask questions for clarity, teacher behaviors, participation reasons, other students, and class size. Furthermore, cognitive flexibility and the participatory student motive to communicate predicted student question asking in the classroom. Results are discussed in relation to the classroom.
Change In The Political System Of Republic Of Korea (Rok) And The United States (United States)-Rok Alliance., Pyungwon Kong
Change In The Political System Of Republic Of Korea (Rok) And The United States (United States)-Rok Alliance., Pyungwon Kong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The United States (U.S.)-Republic of Korea (ROK) alliance is one of the most successful bilateral alliances within the international system, since its formation after the Korean War (1950-1953) in 1953. However, there has been increasing divergence in the perception of Seoul and Washington about the alliance. Thus, the dependent variable of this study is change in South Korea's perception of the alliance. Not downplaying the importance of systemic explanations of this phenomenon, this study employs foreign policy approaches to explain transformation of Seoul's perception of the alliance. However, the study goes beyond democratization and war theory to analyze how socio-economic …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) significantly impact morbidity and mortality. In spite of the well-known benefits of prophylactic medication use, especially in asthma, the rate of medication nonadherence is more than 50%. In Phase I, this study examined the relationship between refill-based medication nonadherence and healthcare utilization/costs in patients with asthma, COPD, and those with both asthma and COPD from the West Virginia (WV) Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) program. In Phase II, the study measured the relationship between refill-based and self-reported medication nonadherence, health-related quality of life (HRQL), and losses in workplace productivity, all of which were …
Social Anxiety In College Students: The Interaction Of Parental Control And Proximity., Jennifer A. Chrystan
Social Anxiety In College Students: The Interaction Of Parental Control And Proximity., Jennifer A. Chrystan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between parental control and parental proximity as they influence social anxiety in young adults. Previous research has consistently demonstrated the positive relationship between parental control and social anxiety. However, studies that have examined the desirability of continued parental attachment (proximity) have resulted in a contradictory body of literature. It was hypothesized that two interaction terms, mother protection by mother proximity and father protection by father proximity, would significantly predict participants’ self-reported level of social anxiety after controlling for mother and father parenting variables. Specifically, it was hypothesized that among …
The Relationships Of Trait Learning Relevance With Teacher Communication Behaviors And Learning Outcomes., Vicki E. Bennett
The Relationships Of Trait Learning Relevance With Teacher Communication Behaviors And Learning Outcomes., Vicki E. Bennett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This investigation explored the relationship of trait learning relevance to teacher communication behaviors and student outcomes. The operationalized student outcomes were student affect for teacher, student affect for course content, and student motivation. The operationalized teacher communication behaviors were teacher clarity, teacher immediacy, and teacher socio-communicative style (assertiveness and responsiveness). Learning relevance was operationalized through use of questions based on Herzberg’s Motivator-Hygiene Theory, five educational relevance questions scaled using the generalized belief scale, and a modified organizational orientation scale. Previous research has yielded inconsistent results in relation to the nature of students’ perceptions of state learning relevance and learning outcomes. …

Effects Of Transitive Stimulus Generalization On Within -Sets Generalization And Between -Sets Generalization, Dana S. Siira
Effects Of Transitive Stimulus Generalization On Within -Sets Generalization And Between -Sets Generalization, Dana S. Siira
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of the study was to examine whether or not within-sets generalization (WSG) and between-sets generalization (BSG) are dependent on transitive stimulus generalization (TSG). A match-to-sample training procedure was used to train four typically developing five-year-old children to select stimuli from set A (fractions in ratio form) in the presence of stimuli from either set B or set C (fractions in picture form). The emergence of TSG, WSG, and BSG then was examined through presentations of stimuli involved in training and stimuli not involved in training.;Participants then were trained on the certain combinations of stimuli that were used to …
Coach And Athlete Burnout: The Role Of Coaches' Decision-Making Style., Brandonn S. Harris
Coach And Athlete Burnout: The Role Of Coaches' Decision-Making Style., Brandonn S. Harris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent burnout research has examined coaches and athletes collectively to determine the influence of coach behaviors on coach and athlete burnout. Results revealed a potential incongruity between decision-making behaviors and their influence on coach and athlete burnout. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between decision-making styles of coaches and burnout among coaches and athletes; gender influence on burnout was also examined. Collegiate swimmers and coaches completed questionnaires assessing burnout and decision-making behaviors. Results revealed a significant relationship between athlete burnout and autocratic coaching behaviors. A significant inverse relationship emerged between athlete burnout and democratic behaviors. …
Paradise Negotiated: Early Modern Women Writing Utopia, 1640--1760, Lisa K. Brewer
Paradise Negotiated: Early Modern Women Writing Utopia, 1640--1760, Lisa K. Brewer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Utopian writing by early modern women traditionally has been left out of the canon of utopian literature because it has been overlooked, undervalued, and often does not conform to the genre characteristics set forth by the example of Thomas More and other male writers of "classic utopias." The works recognized by scholars as fitting into this genre have all been written by men, and the few agreed upon works considered as "utopia proper" describe an imaginary, perfect, political state. However, because class and gender greatly influence the form and content of utopia, I argue for the expansion of the definition …

An Assessment Of Eyewitness Accuracy: The Integration Of Suggestibility And Misidentification, Karri Bonner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study was an examination of eyewitness accuracy and how it relates to misidentification. A new scale to measure suggestibility in adults (The Video Suggestibility Scale for Adults, VSSA) was developed. This scale is modeled after the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scales, which define suggestibility as a combination of Yield and Shift. Participants (N = 160) were administered the VSSA. Participants watched a video of two crimes and were subsequently interviewed either immediately or after a 5-8 day delay. The interview consisted of free recall, open-ended questions, and closed-ended questions suggestive questions. Participants also viewed several lineups to assess accuracy of …
The Effects Of Postindustrial Employment Configurations On Father-Child Involvement In Urban Fragile Families, Michael G. Cina
The Effects Of Postindustrial Employment Configurations On Father-Child Involvement In Urban Fragile Families, Michael G. Cina
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research shows that many inner city fathers work a variety of jobs to make a living for themselves and their families. While some fathers work in traditional jobs that are regulated and taxed, others generate income "off-the-books" or through illegal work called "hustles." This thesis uses data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study to assess the impact of hours worked in regular jobs, off-the-books ventures, and illicit hustles on fathers' involvement with their eighteen-month old child. The regression results show that fathers who spend increasing hours hustling tend to be less involved with their children than fathers who …

Child Abuse And Crime: Testing In The "Cycle Of Violence" Theory, Melanie A. Cox
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study of Child Abuse and Neglect: Testing in the "Cycle of Violence" Theory, is a demonstration of Applied Social Research in partial fulfillment of a master's degree in Sociology. It examines the Cycle of Violence theory by looking at two groups of children: an abuse/neglect group and a control group. It tests the likelihood of the abuse/neglect group to commit a crime in adulthood i.e., property crime, person crime, or public morality; while controlling for race, sex and type of abuse. Also, the odds of gender and race of the children in the abuse/neglect group, becoming a criminal offender …
Suicide And Socioeconomic Context In The Appalachian Region, Joel A. Halverson
Suicide And Socioeconomic Context In The Appalachian Region, Joel A. Halverson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Significant economic changes have occurred over the past thirty years that have altered the geoeconomic landscape of the United States. Although a considerable literature examines economic impacts that have resulted from these changes, there has been less work devoted to understanding the extraeconomic affects of economic change. Many places in the U.S. have experienced large-scale employment and industry losses over the past thirty years. At the same time some places have experienced rapid industrial and employment growth. Together these events represent the continued process of geographic uneven development and provide the context for examining potential affects that economic conditions and …

Quality Of Life And Clinical Outcomes In Type 2 Diabetes Patients At The Primary Care Clinics Of The West Virginia University Hospital, Murali Sundaram
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines relationships between quality of life (QoL) and clinical outcomes, specifically A1C, in Type 2 diabetes patients. Type 2 diabetes patients at the outpatient clinics of a university hospital completed the SF-12 and the Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL), and this was merged with a retrospective collection of his/her clinical and utilization data, including A1C. Usable response rate was 44.3% (n = 385). Mean A1C of respondents was 7.2 (+1.4), mean diabetes duration was 10.2 (+9.1), and 62.1% were obese. Only ADDQoL scores showed significant correlation with A1C (r = -0.19, p < 0.000). Hierarchical regression models were used to explain the effect of A1C on QoL controlling for demographics and clinical variables. A1C was not a significant predictor in any regression model, although univariate analyses indicated significantly lower ADDQoL and SF-12 PCS in the group with A1C > 7.0. Obesity was …
The Relation Of Psychopathic Characteristics And Malingering Of Ptsd, Elizabeth Ann Tyner
The Relation Of Psychopathic Characteristics And Malingering Of Ptsd, Elizabeth Ann Tyner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Clinical lore suggests that psychopaths should be successful malingers, yet empirical evidence is inconclusive. To further investigate the relation of psychopathy and malingering, 56 undergraduate males were classified into three groups based on responses to one trauma screener (Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale; PDS, Foa, Cashman, Jaycox & Perry, 1997) and one psychopathy screener (Psychopathic Personality Inventory: Short Form; PPI: SF, Lilienfeld & Andrews, 1996). This multimodal simulation study examined the ability of participants high and low in psychopathic characteristics to successfully malinger PTSD. Contrary to predictions, results indicated that individuals high in psychopathic characteristics were not better at convincing raters …
Predicting Treatment Completion: A Study Of The Federal Bureau Of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program, Y. Tami Yanez
Predicting Treatment Completion: A Study Of The Federal Bureau Of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program, Y. Tami Yanez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Substance abuse and criminal behavior are two commonly associated social concerns. It is not surprising that substance abuse treatment also has demonstrated a reduction not only substance abuse, as well as criminal behavior. The Federal Bureau of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) has demonstrated wide-reaching benefits. Understanding the 33% non-completion rate of RDAP, then, is an important component of the treatment process. This study, therefore, sought to identify factors present prior to RDAP participation that may predict program completion, which may also guide efforts to reduce relapse and recidivism rates. RDAP completers were slightly more likely to have fewer …
Para-Verbal Avoidance During Public Speaking: The Relationship Between Self -Disclosure And Social Anxiety., Michael F. Detweiler
Para-Verbal Avoidance During Public Speaking: The Relationship Between Self -Disclosure And Social Anxiety., Michael F. Detweiler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Unlike dyadic conversation where the social burden of conversation can be shared, the quantity and quality of speech produced during a public speaking challenge is primarily dependent upon the speaker. This study examined whether differences in disclosure patterns reflect a form of subtle avoidance during public speaking challenges. Termed para-verbal avoidance, it was hypothesized individuals with increased anxiety would refrain from talking about themselves for fear of revealing potentially embarrassing personal information. Also, it was proposed individuals with increased anxiety would avoid discussing subjective information, as it can be debated by others and used as the basis for forming a …
