Changing Vulnerabilities In A Changing Climate: Farming Opportunity And Constraint In Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania, Paul O'Keefe
Changing Vulnerabilities In A Changing Climate: Farming Opportunity And Constraint In Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania, Paul O'Keefe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation demonstrates that the vulnerability of households to both socioeconomic and environmental processes is found in unequal, differentiated ability to access the means of social production and reproduction. Place specific environmental and social factors co-produce specific manifestations of vulnerability, but the underlying causes and driving forces are to be found in the social formation and social relations of households in the case study area. The major finding of this dissertation is that changes in the social relations of production and reproduction are creating as much risk to livelihoods as climate change does, or is likely to do in the …
Dimensions Of Political Reasoning: Associations Among Informational Assumptions, Sociopolitical Values, And Domain-Specific Judgments About Laws, Benjamin Oosterhoff
Dimensions Of Political Reasoning: Associations Among Informational Assumptions, Sociopolitical Values, And Domain-Specific Judgments About Laws, Benjamin Oosterhoff
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adolescents' beliefs about laws are a critical component of their emerging political reasoning, which is hypothesized to guide political decisions in adulthood. Laws serve a variety of purposes by restricting certain social behaviors. However, little is known about the types of laws adolescents view as important and obligatory to obey, or the amount of punishment that should be received for breaking different laws. Identifying individual differences in these beliefs may help elucidate the developmental origins of political attitudes. Therefore, the current study had three primary goals. The first goal was to utilize social domain theory to assess adolescents' judgments and …
Perceived Burdensomeness In Older And Younger Adults: Evaluation Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, Julie Lutz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Perceived burdensomeness is a major risk factor in the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, and may be particularly relevant in the older population, in which suicide rates are relatively high. However, there is currently only one widely-used measure of perceived burdensomeness, and there is currently little information on the validity of this measure for older adults. The aims were to 1) evaluate measurement invariance of the INQ-15 Perceived Burdensomeness subscale across younger and older adult age groups, and 2) evaluate the construct validity of the Perceived Burdensomeness subscale in younger and older adult age groups by comparing nomological networks in both …
Legalized Racial Profiling And Arizona Sb1070: A Framing Effects Study, Agnieszka N. Marciniak
Legalized Racial Profiling And Arizona Sb1070: A Framing Effects Study, Agnieszka N. Marciniak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Immigration has become one of the most important topics on the agenda of federal and state governments. President Obama just passed his pro-immigration executive order allowing five million undocumented immigrants to gain legal work visas. Conversely, there are laws such as Arizona Law SB1070, passed by Governor Jan Brewer in 2010, opposing Obama's pro-immigration stance. In the case of Arizona Law SB1070, it is important to have a basic understanding of the stereotypical perceptions people have of immigrants if laws like these are going to be enforced. In this study, we experimentally manipulated a real-life scenario of an immigrant being …
Suicidal Ideation, Attempts, And Associated Psychosocial Risk And Protective Factors In American Indian Youth And Young Adults, Karen Manzo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction. Research consistently shows that suicidal ideation and attempts are more prevalent among American Indian youth and young adults than youth and young adults in other racial/ethnic groups. Many of the associated psychosocial risk and protective factors are shared across racial/ethnic groups; however, for most of them, the prevalence is highest in American Indian youth. Research on the relation between suicide risk and culturally unique risk (e.g., childhood adversity, discrimination, parenting, unresolved grief, out-of-home placement) and protective factors (e.g., enculturation, cultural values, spirituality) in American Indian youth and young adults is limited. The goal of this research was to examine …
Becoming A Mindful Sport Psychology Consultant: Defining, Developing, And Integrating Mindfulness Into Practice, Michelle M. Mcalarnen
Becoming A Mindful Sport Psychology Consultant: Defining, Developing, And Integrating Mindfulness Into Practice, Michelle M. Mcalarnen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sport psychology consultation is a problem solving situation and process (Sears, Rudisill, & Mason-Sears, 2006) in which sport psychology consultants (SPCs) are interpersonal and content communicators. To date, research in applied sport psychology has not examined consultants from the perspective of consultants as communicators in problem solving situations. Additionally, it remains unclear how consultants' graduate education and applied training experience relates to certain communication skills, such as mindfulness, cognitive flexibility, and communication flexibility. Yet, these skills, and its influence on consultants, have garnered interest for further study in professional practice literature (Baer et al., 2008; Davis, 2013; Poczwardowski & Sherman, …
Russian Soft Power Cultivation In The United States Of America: A Media Content Analysis Of "Russia Beyond The Headlines", David Evans
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The relationship between Russia and the United States of America has been a dominant feature of the international relations landscape for much of the last century. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, this relationship has been significantly altered. Over the last decade, a resurgent Russia has begun to exert its influence on the global stage once again. This effort has been characterized by a mixture of traditional "hard power" and a relatively new form of "soft power." The government of the Russian Federation has developed a broad strategy for engaging the rest of the world with the intention of …
Evaluation Of A Practice Change Using Cope (Creating Opportunities For Parent Empowerment) To Address Maternal Anxiety, Depression And Expectations Related To Preterm Birth And Subsequent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu) Admission, Dennelle Parker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Nearly half a million premature infants are born in the United States each year. The majority of infants born prematurely are admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) for specialized care. Clinical problems related to parental stress due to preterm birth and NICU admission extend beyond feelings of simple stress by parents to that of helplessness, insufficient knowledge, decreased bonding, depression, and the potential development of Post Partum-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Furthermore, these clinical problems can extend to the child. Decreased bonding can cause the child to have clinical and subclinical anxiety disorders; and may further equate to future …
The Role Of Arginase I In Ischemic Stroke And Cardiovascular Disease, Ashley Brooke Petrone
The Role Of Arginase I In Ischemic Stroke And Cardiovascular Disease, Ashley Brooke Petrone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is currently the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Further, the incidence of AIS is expected to increase dramatically through year 2030. Despite the current and anticipated burden of AIS, treatment options for AIS, both acute and chronic, are extremely limited. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is currently the only FDA-approved drug used to treat AIS; however, only a small fraction of AIS patients are eligible to receive tPA, and of these, only roughly 15 percent benefit from treatment with tPA. Given this, there is a crucial …
Emotion Regulation In Families Of Children With Behavior Problems Versus Nonclinical Comparisons, Lauren Borduin Quetsch
Emotion Regulation In Families Of Children With Behavior Problems Versus Nonclinical Comparisons, Lauren Borduin Quetsch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The following study explored the relationship between emotion regulation in children with and without externalizing behavior problems and their caregivers. The study examined emotion regulation in both clinical and comparison samples. The main research question for the study was determining if there was a link between parent and child emotion regulation in both clinical and comparison samples. Sixty families were collected from two rural populations in the United States. Families referred for parent training with children ages 2 through 8 were recruited for a clinical sample (n = 34) along with a nonclinical comparison group (n = 26). A blocking …

A Simulation Model For The Procedure Of Psychiatric Patients' Diversion At William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital Using Flocking Algorithm For Input Modeling, Aida Rabiee Gohar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The high rate of civil commitment in West Virginia indicates that the bureau of mental health in the state has been inefficient and unproductive at facilitating the procedures of mental health system delivery, to the point that the two state hospitals of West Virginia are often at their full capacity and incapable of admitting any new cases. This inadequacy at managing psychiatric emergencies causes frequent diversion of civil committed patients from the state psychiatric hospitals to other community psychiatric units, and ultimately costs the state an un-budgeted {dollar}4 million annually.;The main objective of this research is to contribute to the …
The Role Of Police And Courts In The Implementation Of Domestic Violence Policy In Brazil, Ellen Belchior Rodrigues
The Role Of Police And Courts In The Implementation Of Domestic Violence Policy In Brazil, Ellen Belchior Rodrigues
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation investigated factors that influence the decision-making process of police officers, prosecutors, public attorneys and judges when dealing with cases of domestic violence. The study specifically looked at the types of information the police and the judiciary considered relevant to ask victims when they filed complaints at police stations and at court hearings, respectively. Based on the literature on judicial politics and policing, this research focused on how individuals act as agents, helping or hindering the implementation of the policy. It highlighted the various factors that influence these agents, particularly in the context of small communities such as courts …
Cooperative Learning In Rural Mathematics Classrooms: Interactions Of Instructional Coaching, And Achievement, Joanna Burt-Kinderman
Cooperative Learning In Rural Mathematics Classrooms: Interactions Of Instructional Coaching, And Achievement, Joanna Burt-Kinderman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cooperative learning in school mathematics has been widely studied. However, variation is found in efficacy of this approach. This study examines the particular fit of a cooperative learning approach in rural mathematics classrooms. Research centers on two rural sixth-grade mathematics classrooms whose teachers have had varying degrees of experience in and support for a student-centered cooperative approach to mathematics. This study examines the overall effect of cooperative learning in this setting, then searches for differences in outcomes that may correlate with differences in experience, support, and teacher training in cooperative learning processes. Throughout the school year, benchmark measures of students' …
Improving Community College Student Success Through Investment Of A Community Capitals Framework: A Multi-Case Study, Gregory T. Busch
Improving Community College Student Success Through Investment Of A Community Capitals Framework: A Multi-Case Study, Gregory T. Busch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how community colleges invest in a wide range of resources to achieve student success and how that investment can be better understood through the roles of the constructs found in the Community Capitals Framework. To address these questions, the top two Ohio community colleges demonstrating the greatest positive percent growth in overall student success from 2012 to 2015 were analyzed through case studies. From these inductive inquiries, success initiatives and college interventions to overcome barriers to student success were grouped into strands. The strands reflected a collection of similar themes helpful for …
The Experience Of Transition As Told By First-Year, First-Generation Appalachian College Students, Jeffrey T. Bush
The Experience Of Transition As Told By First-Year, First-Generation Appalachian College Students, Jeffrey T. Bush
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The study examines the transitional experiences of Appalachian first-generation students during their first year of college. Because first-generation status, alone, has a negative affect on student persistence (Ishitani, 2003; Paulsen & Martin Lohfink, 2005), this phenomenological inquiry explores perceptions and experiences of separation and adjustment as expressed by students through semi-structured interviews with Tinto's Theory of Student Departure (1993) as a theoretical framework. Tinto's theory states that students arrive at college with personal attributes, as well as intentions and commitment, however it is their perception of their transition from home culture into the college that can affect persistence. This study …
The Role Of Thin Slices Of Behavior And Incentive Compensation In Employee Selection Decisions, Andrew Michael Carnes
The Role Of Thin Slices Of Behavior And Incentive Compensation In Employee Selection Decisions, Andrew Michael Carnes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite notable research attention, past studies addressing decision stability have provided conflicting recommendations regarding the stability and impact of initial impressions in an interview context. As a result, this dissertation focused on the integration of literature addressing decision making, employee selection, and influence processes in an attempt to provide both a theoretical and empirical foundation for future research addressing initial impressions throughout the interview process. Utilizing fuzzy trace theory and the thin slices of behavior literature, it was hypothesized that impressions formed at career fairs and at the beginning of interviews would account for significant variance in final impressions of …

Exploring The Anticipatory Socialization Stage Of Division I Student-Athletes: The Content, Characteristics, And Functions Of Memorable Messages, Gregory A. Cranmer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the socialization of Division I student-athletes prior to their arrival on campus via the framework of organizational socialization and assimilation stage models, and by specifically examining the content, characteristics, and functions of the memorable messages they receive during their anticipatory stage of socialization. Using first cycle, initial coding and second cycle, pattern coding, results indicated that the content of student-athletes' memorable messages include 10 topics that can be categorized as either addressing the characteristics or experiences of collegiate student-athletes. The results of frequency counts regarding the characteristics of memorable messages indicate that …
Using Growth Curve Modeling To Describe Differential Patterns Of Change In College Level Student Academic Achievement Across Four Years Based On Degree Attainment And Mathematics Remediation, Zornitsa Georgieva
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is a focus on increasing the number of college degrees on national and state levels and a move toward performance-based funding for institutions of higher education. With these shifts, institutions need to study not only student persistence but student progression toward degree completion as well. This institutional case study of a single liberal arts four-year institution utilized academic momentum theory to examine college student academic performance trajectories across four years. Academic momentum theory poses that student initial academic progress defines a trajectory of subsequent progress and degree completion. Growth curve modeling was used to examine changes in student performance …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study was designed to determine the relationship between attitudes toward nanotechnology and the intention of implementing it in science classrooms; to detect the relationship between attitudes and other influential factors (knowledge and self-confidence, professional development, professional context, personal research experience, and personal practice of bringing nanotechnology in science classrooms); to highlight the salient attitudes of science teachers toward nanotechnology and implementing its related content, materials, and activities in science classrooms; and to identify the salient factors that would facilitate the process of integrating nanotechnology in science classrooms.;Science Teachers' Attitudes toward Nanotechnology (STAT-N) survey and semi-structured interview were both used …
Clustering By Academic Major At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Aaron Goodson
Clustering By Academic Major At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Aaron Goodson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Follow-up studies of clustering by academic major, the dynamic of 25% or more of the student-athletes on a roster pursuing the same academic major, indicate that it still occurs in revenue-generating sports (Fountain & Finley 2009, 2011; Otto, 2012). Clustering challenges the notion that student-athletes have control over their collegiate academic experience and reveals that their educational pursuits may not align with their professional goals or provide a meaningful educational experience (Sharp & Sheilley, 2008). Research on clustering is absent in member institutions of different NCAA divisions, institutions with unique missions and history (such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities …
Variable-Interval And Variable-Ratio Schedules Of Punishment By Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Ezra G. Hall
Variable-Interval And Variable-Ratio Schedules Of Punishment By Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Ezra G. Hall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Timeout punishment is among the most commonly reported disciplinary procedures (Barkin, Scheindlin, Ip, Richardson, & Finch, 2007). Despite the frequent use of timeout, little basic research has systematically examined different schedule effects of timeout from positive reinforcement. Using pigeons as subjects, the current series of experiments arranged variable schedules of timeout from positive reinforcement within a multiple-schedule arrangement where 20-s timeouts were response-dependent, response-independent, and delayed. Experiment 1 used a within-subject yoking procedure to compare schedules of variable-ratio (VR) and yoked-interval (YI) timeouts. Experiment 2 arranged separate parametric analyses of variable-interval (VI) and VR schedules of timeout. Within-session, yoked-control components …
Biomechanical Evaluation Of Surgical Loupes, Marsha Chapman Holcomb
Biomechanical Evaluation Of Surgical Loupes, Marsha Chapman Holcomb
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cervical musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a known occupational hazard in micro surgeons who use loupes (telescopes mounted on glasses) to operate, with over 80% having neck pain related to performing surgery. Despite this known occupational risk, the cause, prevention, and treatment of cervical MSDs have been largely ignored in this population. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of loupe use on cervical spine load and characterize the impact of loupe mount angle. In the study, loupes were systematically altered during surgical tasks simulated by twelve healthy individuals (6 male and 6 female) in a laboratory setting. …
Party Systems, Democratization And Governance In Africa: Aligning Theory And Praxis Using Sierra Leone As A Case Study, Mohamed Saffa Lamin
Party Systems, Democratization And Governance In Africa: Aligning Theory And Praxis Using Sierra Leone As A Case Study, Mohamed Saffa Lamin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There has been an upsurge in the movement towards democracy in developing countries since the end of the Cold War, which has led former autocratic regimes to embrace values of good governance as they transition to democracy (Huntington, 1991: 21-26). Democratic triumphalism has even led some scholars to declare the "end of history" due to the absence of alternative political systems that rival Western democracy (Fukuyama, 2006). The so-called "third wave" of democratization has been aided by multilateral institutions, international aid agencies and Western democratic governments, which since the 1990s have used democratization and good governance as collateral for foreign …
Differences In Psychosexual Development Between Child And Peer Male Juvenile Sex Offenders, Colleen M. Lillard
Differences In Psychosexual Development Between Child And Peer Male Juvenile Sex Offenders, Colleen M. Lillard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Juvenile sex offenders account for approximately 50% of child sex abuse cases and 20% of sexual assault cases in the United States. Researchers, in an attempt to better understand the etiology of this behavior, have examined typologies of juvenile sex offenders, including victim-age. Much of the research has compared juveniles who offended against children versus juveniles who have offended against peers/adults. Recent research has also compared these two groups with those juvenile sex offenders who offended against both children and peers (i.e., mixed offenders). Using data from psychological evaluations and the Multiphasic Sex Inventory- II (MSI-II; Nichols & Molinder, 2010), …
Institutional Decolonization: The Internationalization Of The Conflict Over Organized Labor In British Guiana, 1946-1961, Joshua David Esposito
Institutional Decolonization: The Internationalization Of The Conflict Over Organized Labor In British Guiana, 1946-1961, Joshua David Esposito
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation argues that an internationalized struggle for control of British Guiana's trade unions after 1946 resulted in institutional dysfunction and violence in the early 1960s. Some Guianese nationalists, who eventually became leaders of the People's Progressive Party (PPP), wanted to replace the institutions imported from Great Britain with trade unionism geared towards a Guianese version of communism. Conversely, reformist Guianese labor leaders were intent on establishing a left-leaning capitalist framework of labor relations, primarily based on a British model of unionism. Guianese unionists' ideological proclivities shaped their international affiliations, adding a transnational dimension to the struggle between the colony's …
The Literacy Beliefs And Practices Of Middle Level English Language Arts Teachers, Diane Fine
The Literacy Beliefs And Practices Of Middle Level English Language Arts Teachers, Diane Fine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study presents data from a two-phase phenomenological case study investigation designed to ascertain two middle level English teachers' beliefs about literacy. In addition to revealing the teachers' beliefs about literacy, this study sought to discover the ways in which these literacy beliefs were manifested in the instructional tasks employed by each teacher in her middle level English classroom. A pilot study conducted during the fall semester of 2012 described one middle level English teacher's beliefs about literacy. The final phase of the investigation expanded upon data collected during the pilot study and involved two middle level English teachers. This …
What Elite Men's Collegiate Tennis Coaches Look For In Recruits And How They Assess Preferred Player Characteristics, Brandyn H. Fisher
What Elite Men's Collegiate Tennis Coaches Look For In Recruits And How They Assess Preferred Player Characteristics, Brandyn H. Fisher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding what characteristics college tennis coaches look for, and how they evaluate these skills may provide beneficial information related to the recruiting process at the collegiate level. Currently, limited research exists concerning how college tennis coaches evaluate a recruit's intangible characteristics and what specific characteristics they look for. Some authors have suggested that coaches highly value intangible characteristics, such as character and leadership ability, and that these skills are believed to be necessary for success at the collegiate level (Flett, Paule, & Schneider, 2010). However, little is known about the exact processes coaches use to evaluate intangible skills, nor which …
I Support Clean Energy: A Test Of The Eppm And Psychological Reactance Theory, Lindsey Beall
I Support Clean Energy: A Test Of The Eppm And Psychological Reactance Theory, Lindsey Beall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to test components of the extended parallel process model (Witte, 1992) and psychological reactance theory (Brehm, 1966) using environmental hazards as a primary threat, rather than a personal health threat. In addition, this study examined the effect that response costs, ego involvement, and personal connection had on individuals' self-efficacy to perform a behavior. Participants (N = 157) watched a short video that emphasized the environmental and health risks of coal as well as the benefits of using clean energy sources. One group of participants saw a recommended response encouraging them to contact a state …
Types Of Co-Existing Chronic Physical Conditions And Newly-Diagnosed Depression, Its Treatment And Economic Outcomes Among Medicaid Beneficiaries With Type 2 Diabetes, Rituparna Bhattacharya
Types Of Co-Existing Chronic Physical Conditions And Newly-Diagnosed Depression, Its Treatment And Economic Outcomes Among Medicaid Beneficiaries With Type 2 Diabetes, Rituparna Bhattacharya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diabetes is a widely prevalent metabolic condition. Adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) also have many coexisting chronic physical conditions. Coexisting chronic physical conditions among individuals with T2DM may be concordant (conditions that overlap with T2DM in their pathogenesis and management plans such as cardiovascular diseases) or discordant (conditions with unrelated pathogenesis or management plans such as musculoskeletal disorders) or dominant (conditions whose severity eclipses all other illness management plans such as metastatic cancer). There is documented evidence on the negative consequences of depression in adults with T2DM. However, there is only limited knowledge on how the types of …
A Journey In Magic And Realism Performing The Role Of Titania From William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Mya Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This document consists of a detailed account of my process in developing my thesis role and the pedagogical experiences which have contributed to my artistry. The purpose of this thesis role was to allow exploration of the character Titania, from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Titania was an interesting character to portray due to the fact that I had previously performed this role. My study consisted of applying acting methodology to Shakespeare's play in order to realistically present a fresh characterization of the role. A detailed interpretation of the text along with the engagement of my imagination provided the …
