On Uncertainty For Ill-Posed Robot Decision Problems, Jared Joseph Beard
On Uncertainty For Ill-Posed Robot Decision Problems, Jared Joseph Beard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As robots adopt more real world responsibilities, they will be expected to solve more complicated problems. In some cases limited prior knowledge will result in unmodelled environmental conditions; in others, multiple users may have competing perspectives on how to frame a decision problem. Many existing frameworks, namely Markov decision processes (MDP) presuppose users have identified a specific problem with models sufficient to solve or learn a problem. If we wish to extend MDPs to novel problems or those heavily dependent on user feedback, autonomous decision makers must be able to identify limitations in how a given problem is framed and …

An Exploration Of Misconceptions In Introductory Physics, Christopher Mattthew Wheatley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The study of student misconceptions about physics concepts has long been an important area of inquiry in physics education research (PER). The research discussed in this dissertation builds upon the developments in PER by exploring the prevalence of consistently held undergraduate student misconceptions in introductory calculus-based physics. This thesis explores the nature of student misconceptions, mistakes, and naive answering patterns in both introductory undergraduate Newtonian mechanics and electromagnetism by applying a network analytic technique called module analysis to student responses to different concept inventories from institutions of various levels of incoming physics preparation. Each study applying these methods also demonstrates …
Machine Learning Based Intrusion Detection Framework For Can Bus Vulnerabilities In Modern Vehicles, Obinna C. Agbo
Machine Learning Based Intrusion Detection Framework For Can Bus Vulnerabilities In Modern Vehicles, Obinna C. Agbo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus is a crucial communication backbone in modern vehicles, connecting various Electronic Control Units (ECUs). However, inherent design weaknesses such as the lack of encryption and authentication make CAN networks vulnerable to cyber-attacks, including spoofing, Denial of Service (DoS), and fuzzing attacks. This thesis thoroughly evaluates these vulnerabilities and the limitations of existing security frameworks like Message Authentication Codes (MACs) and encryption, advocating for the adoption of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) as a more practical solution for CAN bus security. The proposed IDS leverages advanced machine learning techniques to accurately detect intrusions, even under complex …

Stormwater Responses To Climatic And Land Cover Changes In Lowly Urbanized Subcoastal Environments, Md Tanvirul Islam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stormwater runoff is widely considered a significant factor in coastal inundation and water quality degradation. The main objective of this thesis is to determine the potential impacts on stormwater runoff in lowly urbanized coastal/subcoastal environments under a changing climate and land use/cover. The East Fork San Jacinto River Basin (Area = 2577 of southern Texas, USA was considered a pilot area for this study. Given the sparse availability of high-resolution precipitation data in space and time, this research first evaluated four remotely sensed and/or reconstructed precipitation products (CMORPH-CDR, MERRA, PERSIANN-CDR, and PRISM) by comparing the data with the historical gauge …
Assessing Carbon Sequestration Of Mixed Hardwood Forests Through Optimizing Harvesting Strategies And Biomass Utilization For Biochar, Bibek Aryal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the long-term carbon stock of central Appalachian mixed hardwood forests under several harvesting strategies. The strategies were optimized to maximize both long-term carbon sequestration and timber supply during harvest using Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models. Clear-cut (CC), Partial cut (PC), and mixed harvesting methods to unharvested conditions over 190 years were studied. Initially, harvested forests showed lower sequestration rates than unharvested forests but eventually surpassed them, with CC showing the highest rates over time. Younger forests, particularly those aged 85 to 130 years, exhibited peak carbon sequestration rates. Regarding carbon stock, the unharvested scenario initially had the …

Kinetic Study Of Oh Radical Reactions With Cyclopentenone Derivatives, Patrick Kipkoech Rutto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Conjugated a, b-unsaturated carbonyl compounds like cyclopentenone play a significant role in various environmental processes. These compounds are formed in combustion and Earth’s atmosphere from the oxidation of cyclic ketones such as cyclopentanone. Once formed under oxidative conditions, cyclopentenone may react with presence of free radicals like OH in the atmosphere molecules to form vinoxy type resonantly stabilized radicals. The presence of free radicals species like OH, O2 in the atmosphere can react with these molecules resulting into intermediate products that dissociate to give final products. Experimental and theoretical investigations in the reactions of cyclopentenone derivatives with these small free …

Measuring And Modeling Riparian Wetland Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity, Nutrient Concentrations And Shallow Groundwater Dynamics In An Appalachian Mixed Land Use Catchment, Bidisha Faruque Abesh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The paucity of research on accurate predictions of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), spatiotemporal analysis of nutrient concentrations relative to water source types (stream and shallow groundwater (SGW)), water flow directions, and land use in riparian wetlands of Appalachian mixed land use catchments underscored the need for this study. Additionally, the lack of SGW flow simulations and stream-SGW interactions using three-dimensional (3D) numerical models (i.e., MODFLOW) in these riparian wetlands further highlighted the research gap. Observed data including soil properties, Ksat, surface water (SW) and SGW levels, and nutrient concentrations, including nitrate (NO3-N), nitrite (NO2-N), ammonium (NH4-N), orthophosphate (PO43-P), total nitrogen …
Modeling And Techno-Economic Optimization Of Microwave Assisted Ammonia Synthesis Processes, Opeyemi Aduragbemi Ogunniyan
Modeling And Techno-Economic Optimization Of Microwave Assisted Ammonia Synthesis Processes, Opeyemi Aduragbemi Ogunniyan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ammonia, which plays a crucial role in agriculture, chemical production, and energy storage applications, has traditionally been produced using the Haber-Bosch (HB) process. However, this well-established technology has significant drawbacks. The HB process requires extremely high pressures (up to 300 bar) and temperatures (400-500°C), making it feasible only for large-scale operations with substantial capital investment. Additionally, the high energy consumption of the HB process contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, raising concerns about its environmental sustainability. This dissertation extensively explores a new low-pressure microwave-assisted process for synthesizing ammonia, demonstrating its economic viability and potential cost-effectiveness compared to the traditional method, …

Foraging Economies: A Market Based Methodology For Robotic Swarm Foraging, John A. Little
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Swarm robotics involves coordinating large groups of autonomous agents to accomplish complex tasks through decentralized, adaptive behaviors, providing a robust and scalable approach suited to dynamic and unpredictable environments. While traditional swarm models frequently draw inspiration from biological systems such as ant colonies or bee foraging, other approaches use techniques from physics, control theory, and economics to achieve effective coordination. This study distinguishes itself by applying economic principles—specifically, market-driven mechanisms like auctions, utility functions based on opportunity cost, and supply-demand dynamics based on fluctuating resource values at a central base—to improve task allocation within a swarm foraging context. This approach …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In recent decades, deep learning approaches have shown significant improvement in various image understanding tasks. However, analysis of high-resolution images remains a major challenge. In this work, we address the challenge of very high-resolution histopathological image (VHRHI) classification using a new information-theoretic discriminative patch selection approach. We show results on a high-resolution image dataset, namely, gigapixel whole slide tissue images for cancer tumors. Then we address how to efficiently classify challenging histopathology images, such as gigapixel whole-slide images for cancer diagnostics with image-level annotation. These ``weak labels'' are applied throughout the image but describe tumor regions of variable sizes and …

Investigation Of Synergistic Effect Between Polystyrene And Polyethylene Under Conventional Thermal Heating And Microwave Heating, Thang Luong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Single-use plastics (Low Density Polyethylene, LDPE; Polystyrene, PS; Polypropylene, PP) are increasingly used in the modern world, with their usage growing every year. An effective method to manage the resulting waste is urgently needed, as landfilling and incineration have proven harmful to the environment in the long term. Mechanical recycling may not maintain the desirable characteristics of the single-use plastics through several cycles. Pyrolysis emerges as a promising approach to address plastic waste. Given that single-use plastic waste often comes in a mixture, combining plastic in the feedstock is a viable solution to effectively convert these polymers altogether to gain …
Dynamic Load Identification Using Optimal Sensor Placement And Dynamic Condensation Methods, Iole Pecora
Dynamic Load Identification Using Optimal Sensor Placement And Dynamic Condensation Methods, Iole Pecora
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Knowledge of excitation loads that structures experience during their service life is pivotal in different engineering fields, not only from a structural design optimization point of view but also as prevention of possible damages to the structures themselves. However, in case of dynamic events such as tornadoes, structures subjected to impulsive load due to their vicinity of explosions, the excitation load cannot be directly determined through direct measurements. In these scenarios, the inverse problem is used, and it is called load identification. This type of problem tries to determine the excitation load knowing the system response through a series of …

Room Temperature Decarboxylative Amination Reactions Of Carboxylic Acids, Rabina Basnet
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Anilines are important structural motifs present in numerous natural products and pharmaceutically relevant compounds. Among the various synthetic strategies that have been developed, transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions represent one of the most commonly employed methods for the formation of anilines. However, these approaches generally require pre-functionalized aryl coupling partners, and the utilization of more readily available, and structurally diverse coupling partners, such as carboxylic acids, would be desirable. Decarboxylative coupling reactions have garnered significant attention as an alternative approach to form new C-N bonds, and substantial progress has been made in this area. Nevertheless, these methods remain limited, with a predominant …

Investigating The Role Of Spinal Motoneuron Organization In Human Motor Control, Rachel I. Taitano
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mechanisms of voluntary motor control are complex and require inputs via cortical centers, peripheral sensory systems, and spinal inputs such as central pattern generators. It is hypothesized that control is simplified via utilization of motor primitives, which may rely on structures within the spinal cord, however this remains unknown in both human and non-human primates. The goal of this dissertation is to characterize muscle activity in the upper extremity in relation to the corresponding anatomical organization of spinal motoneurons to provide insight into how primitives are both organized and activated to produce movement.
The first aim of this work was …

Venus Balloon Localization: A Map-Aided Navigation Approach Supported By A Single-Satellite, Heath Scott Cottrill
Venus Balloon Localization: A Map-Aided Navigation Approach Supported By A Single-Satellite, Heath Scott Cottrill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although Venus and Earth began as twins, possessing comparable size, mass, and composition, past exploration missions have revealed that Venus is now hellishly hot, devoid of oceans, and enveloped in a carbon dioxide-filled atmosphere. To understand when and why this evolutionary divergence occurred, further exploration is required. Today, there is a growing interest in the use of aerial platforms to circumvent the harsh conditions at the surface, which limit the lifetime of landed instruments. In this concept, a single balloon, propelled by the ambient wind field, would operate in the atmosphere at an altitude between 50 and 70 km, where …
Making Something Out Of Nothing: Immobility As An Operant, KaʻAla K. Bajo
Making Something Out Of Nothing: Immobility As An Operant, KaʻAla K. Bajo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The tradition of research in the experimental analysis of behavior generally emphasizes the analysis of overt, discrete responses such as lever presses or key pecks. Reflecting this emphasis, definitions of behavior involve the observable action or movement of an organism through space. Although continuous responses involving little to no movement, such as “holding still” or “immobility”, fall outside these definitions, immobility is a form of continuous, operant responding that can be learned and experimentally controlled. Three experiments were conducted to investigate parameters surrounding immobility as an operant. In Experiment 1, immobility in the form of platform-standing bouts was shaped and …

Examining The Role Of Microbial Communities In Soil Carbon Cycling Across Levels Of Complexity, Chansotheary Dang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Microorganisms provide the foundation for many ecosystem processes and are important drivers of carbon and nutrient cycling. The advancement of next generation sequencing has allowed researchers to lift open the lid on the ‘black box’ in microbial ecology. While previously unculturable microbes can now be characterized with the 16S rRNA gene, answering ‘who’s there?’ is only part of the challenge. Hidden inside the ‘black box’ remains the question, ‘who’s doing what?’. Recent development in trait-based methods like quantitative stable isotope probing (qSIP) equipped microbial ecologists with the tool to connect taxon-specific traits to ecosystem processes. Despite the growing body of …

Triggered Online System Re-Identification Applied To Model Predictive Control Using Gaussian Processes, Daniel Augusto Kestering
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Safety, product quality, enhanced performance, and increased profit all depend on the control of chemical and energy processes. However, operational issues can lead to control challenges, especially when processes are subject to disturbances during their operation. Process control methods work best when processes operate close to their designed operat- ing conditions, but lack of performance or other issues may occur when the process is far from such conditions. To overcome these challenges, in this dissertation, online model re- identification is proposed for Model Predictive Control (MPC). This involves reassessing the predictive model of an advanced controller, namely MPC, when re-identification …
