The Effects Of Contingent--Noncontingent Structured Environments On Selected Behaviors Of Federal Youth Offenders., Paul Richard Thomas
The Effects Of Contingent--Noncontingent Structured Environments On Selected Behaviors Of Federal Youth Offenders., Paul Richard Thomas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Correctional treatment programming for juvenile offenders has been characterized as being without focus and lacking any clear conception of treatment goal or program objectives (More, 1973). The basic lack of widespread agreement on such fundamental assumptions as program goals, objectives, methodology, and definitions is further confused by not having an objectively derived data base from which different correctional programs could be derived or to which programming effectiveness could be compared.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this study was to experimentally determine the behavior of a solid-gas jet issuing into a transverse gas stream. The z’esults of this study should also pertain to other types of two phase jets injected into a cross flow; in particulars atomized liquidgas jets into a gas stream and solid-liquid jets into a liquid stream. Applications for such processes might include the dynamics of liquid fuels injected into turbine combustion chambers and effluents injected into rivers. The application which led to the choice of this dissertation topic was the study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) involving the …

Symmetry As A Determinant Of Musical Composition., Larry Joseph Solomon
Symmetry As A Determinant Of Musical Composition., Larry Joseph Solomon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this dissertation is to show how symmetry is a general determinant* of musical composition. Symmetry will be defined as a congruence which results from certain specific operations, namely those of reflection, rotation, or translation and will be applied to any aspect of musical composition. A composition is here to be the combination and arrangement of parts to form a whole. Stated in another v/ay, the purpose is to demonstrate how postoperative congruences define the arrangement and combination of the parts of musical works.

Optimization Of Coal Gasification Processes For Synthetic Natural Gas Production., Charles Tsun-Hsiung Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The second section of the questionnaire assessed West Virginia Home Economists about a number of items affecting the future of home economics„ A majority supported the notion that home economics should emphasize energy management and about half of them believed this involvement would have great social impact. WVHEA respondents were not united on the idea of integrating knowledge from several disciplines as compared to strengthening specialization. They were divided on the idea of using process problem analysis and solutions in lieu of the specialized, subject matter approach to content. The WVHEA respondents agreed solidly that food and clothing labs should …
Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman
Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This document reports a research effort directed at compiling the field theory, noise theory, and communication theory necessary to perform systems analysis and optimization of an electromagnetic communication system for use within a mine. The field equations and power transfer between loops placed in an infinite, homogeneous, lossy medium is examined and relationships between parameters are determined that provide optimum transfer of signal power. This analysis is extended to cover the case of an infinite, homogeneous, lossy half-space used to model the actual mining situation. Approximate solutions are found to greatly simplify systems analysis. Noise, bandwidth, false alarm rate, missed …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This document reports a research effort to define criteria which can be used for early indications of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) in association with coal miners' pneumoconiosis. Selected measurements of the vectorcardiograms (VCG's) of 18 miners with pneumoconiosis are compared with corresponding measurements of a normal group of 32 non-miners. The components of the vectors associated with the MRSV, SMRSV, MLSV, and the MAZ are the selected measurements. MAZ is a vector occurring before the MLSV and which has a maximum anterior component. Each of these vectors has been reported as an indicator of RVH. The major methods of analysis …
The Strength And Stiffness Of Steel Deck Subjected To In-Plane Loading., Duane Scott Ellifritt
The Strength And Stiffness Of Steel Deck Subjected To In-Plane Loading., Duane Scott Ellifritt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Steel deck is widely used in the floors and roofs of steel framed structures to support gravity loads. In addition, it can effectively resist in-plane shear loading when properly connected to a structural steel framework and can help to brace a building against lateral forces. This feature of steel deck floors and roofs has long been recognized but, with few exceptions, designers have not been able to take advantage of it because design formulas have not been available. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of evaluating the performance of wide, narrow, and intermediate rib decks when used as shear-resistant …
The Mechanical Response Of Graphite, Alvin M. Strauss
The Mechanical Response Of Graphite, Alvin M. Strauss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A theory of rate Independent material response is developed In conjunction with a functional Integral approximation. The linear term of this approximation Is used to represent the mechanical behavior of reactor grade polycrystalline graphite. The constitutive relation ls then applied to the case of one dimensional cyclic straining. A general three dimensional rate independent constitutive theory for the mechanical behavior of graphite is also developed. This theory Is then analyzed with respect to the available cyclic loading data obtained from uniaxial experiments.
Sensitivity Analysis In Optimum Process Design, Tai Ming Chang
Sensitivity Analysis In Optimum Process Design, Tai Ming Chang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The effects of parameter variation and uncertainty on optimal process design have been studied. Equations necessary for determining the sensitivity of optimal system performance to parameter variation are derived. Design criteria have been developed for optimal design of systems that are either sensitive to parameter variation or involving parameter uncertainty. The sensitivity equations for systems described by algebraic, differential, and difference equations are derived based on the Lagrange multiplier method, Pontryagin's maximum principle, and the discrete version of the maximum principle, respectively. Such sensitivity equations are linear and can be solved for sensitivity coefficients. Two methods are proposed for optimal …
