A Comparison Of An Active And A Passive Relaxation Procedure For The Management Of General Anxiety (Relaxation, Stress Management, Sensory Awareness)., Jeffrey Alan Knight
A Comparison Of An Active And A Passive Relaxation Procedure For The Management Of General Anxiety (Relaxation, Stress Management, Sensory Awareness)., Jeffrey Alan Knight
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Relaxation training procedures have been used increasingly over the last 20 years as a treatment intervention for generalized anxiety. Treatment of anxiety is often approached from the broader perspective of stress management training using relaxation procedures as components of the treatment protocol. Historically, active relaxation techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation, have been employed in stress management programs, although passive relaxation techniques, those not requiring muscle tension release, have also proven effective in reducing symptoms of tension and anxiety. The present study was designed to compare the efficacy of a clinically proven, but empirically untested, passive relaxation procedure called Sensory …

The present study involved an examination of cost-effectiveness analysis of two types of back-up reinforcers (high-cost, low-cost) in a token economy program. Subjects were ten adult institutionalized retarded females who earned tokens for completion of three unit management and three recreation target behaviors. Tokens were redeemable for one of two types of back-up reinforcers, either high-cost or low-cost reinforcers. Classification of reinforcers into one of the two types was primarily related to whether or not they involved a monetary expenditure that was frequent and necessitated fiscal programmatic planning. The experimental design utilized was a reversal design with subjects divided into …
Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Schmidt (1975) and Weinberg, Guy, and Tupper (1964) have expressed the expectation that post-KR delays in simple to complex motor tasks must increase as task complexity increases if the rate of acquisition is to be maintained. This study was an attempt to investigate that prediction. Nine treatment conditions were established by the interaction of three levels of post-KR delay with three levels of task complexity. Volunteer subjects (N = 10 for each treatment condition) were male undergraduate and graduate students at West Virginia University during the summer of 1979. Twenty trials were received by each subject; the first ten were …

A History Of Game Preservation In British East Africa, 1895-1963., Thomas Paul Ofcansky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
East Africa's wildlife is justly famous. This study examines the difficulty of preserving large numbers of wild animals in societies committed to widespread and rapid economic development. In Kenya the colonial administration had to devise a policy that would enable a rapidly expanding European settler community to live side by side with hundreds of thousands of potentially destructive wild animals. As far as Uganda was concerned, the authorities had to prevent the country's elephant herds from destroying agricultural crops without destroying them. Tanganyika's situation was even more complex. A large number of European and African farmers believed that the only …

Clinical Treatments Of Depression., Deborah Kay Orth
Clinical Treatments Of Depression., Deborah Kay Orth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Depression seems to be a major problem for college students who are coping with academic and social pressures, as well as defining goals for life and career, often without adequate support systems. Therapy is frequently sought by moderately depressed college students. This treatment teaches the individual a style of thinking or a way of approaching their difficulties, but in one study, the 42 percent who did seek therapy rated the effectiveness as only 3.5 on a 5-point scale (Bosse, 1975). Students perhaps also need a means of coping that they can rely on in addition to the insight and behavior …

Talking To A Whirlwind: The Loyalist Printers In America, 1763-1783, George Edward Cullen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation tells the story of the Loyalist printers of Revolutionary America. They numbered 34, varying in degree from those who adhered to the crown as a matter of principle, to those who merely wanted to be on the winning side, and still others whose loyalism was due to circumstances of time and place. No attempt has been made to provide a blanket "why" for the actions of the Loyalist printers; each is treated as the individual he was and the reasons for his actions are examined on that basis.

Thermo-Mechanical Responses For Porous-Permeable Media With Applications To Underground Coal Gasification., Kang Yong Lee
Thermo-Mechanical Responses For Porous-Permeable Media With Applications To Underground Coal Gasification., Kang Yong Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A two-dimensional crack/cavity thermo-mechanical-elastic loading model for characterizing the response of porous—permeable media is developed. The stress and displacement field expressions for this formulated model, with a general elliptic crack/cavity shape, are derived by using the complex variable approach for twodimensional thermo-elastic problems. The critical loading criteria for crack-closure are expressed in terms of the applied stresses and temperature gradient and the mechanisms for line crack-closure are determined from these conditions. Expressions for the contact normal stress and frictional shear stress are analytically developed by extending McClintock and Walsh's crack-closing concept to thermo-mechanical loads. The stress intensity factors for a …

A History Of The Samia Location In Western Kenya, 1890-1930., Jacob Raymond Seitz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This is a study of development and change on the local level in East Africa during the introduction and establishment of colonialism. Over the years the emphasis in African History has gradually shifted from the study of imperial policy and the Europeans' role to that of the African inhabitants. Until recently, this new focus has resulted principally in valuable studies of the precolonial life and migrations. Now it is the first decades of the twentieth century that are under scrutiny. This period, spanning the establishment of the colonial system, undoubtably had a great impact on independent Kenya.
