Recreational Opportunities And Health Status In West Virginia, Yoav Sneh May 2003

Recreational Opportunities And Health Status In West Virginia, Yoav Sneh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over half of all Americans are considered to be physically inactive and/or obese, leading to significant individual and societal costs. This study investigates the link between recreational supply and health status for West Virginia. Using spatial econometric techniques, this study provides solid evidence that the demand for health care is positively associated with physical inactivity rates, and that physical inactivity rates are inversely related to the supply of recreational opportunities. When promoting the importance of physical activity as preventative health care, policy makers should consider the provision of recreational opportunities as a means to overcome sedentary behaviors.

Cytogenetic Analysis Of Primary Breast Tumors And Mcf10a Cells To Determine Early Steps Of Breast Carcinoma, Mohammad Mah Odetallah May 2003

Cytogenetic Analysis Of Primary Breast Tumors And Mcf10a Cells To Determine Early Steps Of Breast Carcinoma, Mohammad Mah Odetallah

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Breast cancers are characterized by genomic instability, abnormal chromosomal counts and multiple translocations. There is a heavy burden on tumor cells to acquire as many mutations as possible in a short time. Tumors seem to achieve that through genomic instability. The role of homologous recombinational repair loss has been well established as a mechanism of chromosomal instability. A researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Jean Latimer, was able to demonstrate the loss of nucleotide excision repair (NER), in adjacent non tumor tissue. NER functions in bulky adducts repair, following UV radiation. These lesions introduce a bend in the DNA …

Adjustment To Relocation To An Assisted Living Facility, Lisa Whipple Drozdick May 2003

Adjustment To Relocation To An Assisted Living Facility, Lisa Whipple Drozdick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Assisted living has become the fastest growing senior housing alternative for older adults, yet little research has been conducted with residents of assisted living. Relocation involves a major life change and is associated with health problems, poor adjustment, and increased mortality. Research on relocation into nursing homes suggests declines in health and psychological well-being frequently follow relocation and are greatest one to two months following entry into the facility. Control over the decision to relocate and control within the facility following relocation have been related to physical and mental health. Assisted living residents are similar to nursing home residents so …

Sequence And Distribution Of The Neotyphodium Lolii Peptide Synthetase Gene Ipsa., Prapassorn Damrongkool

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Neotyphodium lolii is a fungal endophyte of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Like related endophytes of other grasses, it increases the grass host's fitness. Endophyte-infected grasses have greater resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, and thus are highly competitive. However, the endophytes also produce toxins that cause toxicoses in grazing animals. N. lolii produces a large amount of lolitrems, which are thought to cause ryegrass staggers in mammals. The fungus also produces a smaller amount of a highly toxic ergopeptine ergovaline. In this dissertation, I have characterized, sequenced and surveyed the distribution of peptide synthetase gene IpsA that is required for …

A Normal Accident Theory-Based Complexity Assessment Methodology For Safety-Related Embedded Computer Systems., John J. Sammarco Jan 2003

A Normal Accident Theory-Based Complexity Assessment Methodology For Safety-Related Embedded Computer Systems., John J. Sammarco

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computer-related accidents have caused injuries and fatalities in numerous applications. Normal Accident Theory (NAT) explains that these accidents are inevitable because of system complexity. Complex systems, such as computer-based systems, are highly interconnected, highly interactive, and tightly coupled. We do not have a scientific methodology to identify and quantify these complexities; specifically, NAT has not been operationalized for computer-based systems. Our research addressed this by operationalizing NAT for the system requirements of safety-related computer systems. It was theorized that there are two types of system complexity: external and internal. External complexity was characterized by three variables: system predictability, observability, and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The provision of micro-credit for micro-enterprise development plays an important role in the alleviation and eradication of poverty. In particular, micro-credit programs have been shown to empower women by providing them access to material resources and increasing their participation in household decision-making. Some critics, however, claim that male family members control the loans women receive from credit programs and that women are merely a means for them to access money. Although it is widely believed that these programs are highly effective, there is a debate about the extent to which women are empowered and poverty within these families is reduced. …
