Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle Jan 2004

Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mankind has been concerned with the safety and well-being of workers for more than 2,000 years. Despite this concern, occupational injuries have claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 American workers from 1992-2001 as reported through the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The traditional measures of the human loss used—frequency, rate, and severity—are not the only measures of the achievements of the occupational safety and health community. Nor are they the only means to direct efforts to reduce the number of occupational incidents. Economic loss is another perspective that provides a more complete and meaningful …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Intensive and extensive caregiving of older adults disabled by dementia is frequently provided by the older adult's spouse. Caregiving for a spouse with dementia has been related to a number of poor physical and mental health outcomes for the primary caregiver. Anxiety is one outcome that is endorsed frequently by the caregiver, yet remains minimally studied in relation to caregiving. In addition, no study has identified factors that potentially moderate the relation between caregiving stressors and anxiety in older adults. This study explored the relations among caregiving stressors, burden, religiosity, spirituality, and anxiety in older adult caregivers. Several models were …

Parallel Structures And Binary Oppositions In Andre Gide's "L'Immoraliste" And "La Porte Etroite"., Jennifer Lawrence

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two of André Gide’s books, L’Immoraliste and La Porte étroite, exemplify the ethical struggles that defined the author’s life through the codependence of their singular message. By submitting these two intrinsically similar works to a structuralist analysis of the binary oppositions that exist between them, the relationship between good and evil becomes solidified through the structures and semiotic codes of the novels, the opposition of the protagonists, and the motifs of geography, personal relationships, nature, and religion.

Enhanced Solids Removal Design Based On Characterization Of Quiescent Zone Hydrodynamics In Flow-Through Aquaculture Systems., Andrea T. Rumberg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Typically, solids removal in flow-through aquaculture systems consists of movement of solids to a quiescent settling chamber from which they are removed after settling. Commonly used solids removal processes are time and labor intensive and generally inefficient. Due to expected increases in federal effluent discharge regulations, development of efficient quiescent zones is essential to future growth of the aquaculture industry. However, before alternate designs were considered, hydrodynamic properties of traditional systems needed studied to adequately establish baseline characteristics. Characterization was achieved using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), which measured velocity in three dimensions. Solids settling properties were characterized using specific …

A Simple Two-Dimensional Boundary Element Program For Estimating Multiple Seam Interaction., Olayemi Olumide Akinkugbe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis, the need for a fast and easy to use numerical analysis program for calculating multiple seam interactions is established. To fulfill this, a simplified twodimensional (2D) laminated overburden model was mathematically developed. Also the utility of the 2D laminated model for modeling complex multiple-seam interaction was further enhanced by its ability to calculate the pillar safety factors and multiple-seam induced subsidence and strain. The 2D laminated overburden model is then implemented into a displacementdiscontinuity program called LaM2D. The LaM2D program can be used to calculate seam convergence, vertical stress, multiple seam stress, pillar safety factors, subsidence and …

The FISH probe set included centromere enumeration probes for chromosomes 3, 7, and 17, and a cosmid probe 9p21, which contains the p16 tumor suppressor gene. A total of 113 urine specimens were tested. Genetic changes associated with urothelial neoplasia were identified in 5% of the negative and …

A Spatial-Temporal Optimization Approach To Watershed Management: Amd Treatment In The Cheat River Watershed, West Virginia., Xiaobing Zhao Jan 2004

A Spatial-Temporal Optimization Approach To Watershed Management: Amd Treatment In The Cheat River Watershed, West Virginia., Xiaobing Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most water management studies concentrate on the inter-temporal allocation problem or, more recently, spatial dynamics—but not both. While early spatial-temporal studies focused on the allocation of water quantity, this paper presents an approach to water quality analysis that incorporates both spatial and temporal dynamics in a watershed framework. The model developed is an explicit economic watershed optimization model built upon an underlying water quality model where pollution loads are driven by pollution sources and alternative control strategies. It reflects the spatial aspects of pollution loads and treatment and the way the system reacts over time to management options and natural …

Surrogate Mothers Use Of Online Messaging: A Study Of Social Support., Shauna Lively Aurelio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

People faced with challenging life events, such as pregnancy, need social support for well being. Traditionally, this support has been given via face-to-face contact in communities. It is known that online messaging promotes effective social support among people with disabilities or illnesses, and during life events such as pregnancy and parenting. It has been further suggested that surrogate mothers, women who contract with another person or a couple to bear a child, receive less social support from their families than other mothers. What is not known is how effective online social support is for surrogate mothers and how much they …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Firefighters: A Proposed Model Of Mediators And Moderators., Kevin S. Del Ben

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been studied extensively in victim populations (e.g., combat veterans and rape victims); however, very little attention has been given to the responders who come to the aid of these victims, specifically firefighters. Firefighters will respond to both a large number, and a wide variety of potentially stressful situations over the course of their careers. The dangers that firefighters encounter were brought to the attention of the public during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Currently, there is a lack of research on basic information regarding PTSD in firefighters, such as prevalence …
