Aluminum Resistance Of Mycorrhizal Plants, Katrina R. Klugh
Aluminum Resistance Of Mycorrhizal Plants, Katrina R. Klugh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Aluminum (Al) in acidic soils is toxic to plants, affecting growth, water uptake, and nutrient assimilation. Aluminum resistance of plants has been ascribed to organic acid exudation from roots and changes in plant physiology resulting from the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal symbiosis. This dissertation describes four studies that address questions regarding Al resistance of mycorrhizal plants.;In chapter 2, Liriodendron tulipifera, a common tree species in northeastern U.S. forests, was inoculated with several species of AM fungi and exposed to Al. Biomass and plant nutritional data showed that the AM species Glomus clarum conferred the most benefit to plant hosts. Organic …

Cycles And Weight Effects On Emissions And Development Of Predictive Emissions Models For Heavy Duty Trucks, Kuntal A. Vora
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
NOX and PM emissions data from the 5--mode CARB HHDDT Schedule, UDDS, and AC5080 were reviewed, with reference to each other. Next, two-dimensional correlations were used to predict the emissions rate on one cycle from the rates of two other cycles. The two-dimensional analysis yielded better correlations.;The emission of NOX, CO, CO2, HC and PM were analyzed with respect to weight. Vehicles did not follow linear NOX emissions trends over large weight ranges. Fleet-wide emissions for HHDDT could be predicted.;Lastly, a method was proposed to predict emissions based on the vehicle's emissions history from other cycles and on the properties …

Development Of A Computer -Administered Analog Assessment To Evaluate Ptsd Symptoms In College Students Who Have Experienced A Motor Vehicle Crash (Mvc), Yi-Chuen Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There has been a paucity of research investigating the characteristics of college students following a motor vehicle crash (MVC), a relatively common event in the lives of college students (e.g., an annual incidence rate of 1.37 per 10,000 resulting from dozing and driving between years 1984 to 1999). Moreover, typical PTSD assessment relies almost exclusively on indirect measures (e.g., interview, self report, rating by others). The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) investigation of the characteristics of college students who had been involved in an MVC versus a control group, (b) development of a computer-administered analog assessment, the adult …

Reduction Of Toxic Air Contaminants (Tacs) And Particulate Matter Emissions From Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Engines, Hemanth K. Kappanna
Reduction Of Toxic Air Contaminants (Tacs) And Particulate Matter Emissions From Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Engines, Hemanth K. Kappanna
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Increasing urban pollution levels have driven the Federal and the local air control boards to impose stricter emissions regulations on heavy-duty engines earmarked for transit buses. This has made natural gas a promising fuel for reducing the emissions of oxides of nitrogen and predominantly particulate matter from heavy-duty transit buses. Recent research studies performed at WVU and elsewhere have showed that natural gas engines emit an order of magnitude lower PM emissions, on a mass basis, when compared to diesel engines without any exhaust aftertreatment devices. However, on a number basis the emissions from natural gas fueled buses were an …
Effects Of Morrow's Honeysuckle Control And The Impact Of The Shrub On Invertebrates At Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Pennsylvania, Jason Patrick Love
Effects Of Morrow's Honeysuckle Control And The Impact Of The Shrub On Invertebrates At Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Pennsylvania, Jason Patrick Love
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lonicera morrowii (Morrow's honeysuckle) dominates a degraded meadow at Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. We tested four removal methods of Morrow's honeysuckle during spring and autumn 2004. Cut, stump application of 20% glyphosate, and mechanical removal in autumn were not successful (<47% reduction), while mechanical removal in spring and foliar application of 2% glyphosate were somewhat successful (>66% reduction). We used a modified leaf blower to sample invertebrates at our site. Invertebrate biomass was lowest within the native shrub, Viburnum recognitum (southern arrowwood) (p<0.05). Biomass of larval leaf chewers was highest in the native shrub. Invertebrate abundance, biomass, and richness were reduced under dense thickets of Morrow's honeysuckle (p<0.05), due to low amount of herbaceous cover beneath the shrubs. The amount of leaf area consumed by herbivores was 10 times more on the native shrub. Overall, our findings reveal that the exotic shrubs negatively impact invertebrate communities.
Mechanisms Of Environmental Carcinogenesis And Metal -Induced Cellular Signaling, Jacquelyn Jo Bower
Mechanisms Of Environmental Carcinogenesis And Metal -Induced Cellular Signaling, Jacquelyn Jo Bower
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Low dose chronic exposure to environmental carcinogens is a major cause of human cancers. More than 375 known or suspected environmental carcinogens have been identified, many of which are transition metals or metal containing compounds (IARC, updated to 2004, http://www-cie.iarc.fr/monoeval/crthall.html). Although much research has focused on the ability of these metals to induce reactive oxygen species formation (ROS), DNA damage, and apoptosis, less effort has been put forth to examine the cellular signaling mechanisms responsible for these effects. Our experimental research has focused on the signaling pathways induced in response to arsenic exposure. Arsenic is a highly interesting transition metal …

An Evaluation Of Vibration And Other Effects On The Accuracy Of Grip And Push Force Recall, Thomas W. Mcdowell
An Evaluation Of Vibration And Other Effects On The Accuracy Of Grip And Push Force Recall, Thomas W. Mcdowell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Operators of vibratory hand tools can be at risk of developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposure to intense hand-transmitted vibration. To better assess health risks, comprehensive risk evaluations of these tasks must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces. Researchers have used instrumentation for such measurements; but those techniques may be ill-suited for certain field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques have been proposed as alternatives to handle instrumentation. This study comprised two experiments that examined the effects of vibration and other factors upon force-recall accuracy and reliability. In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Female Muslim immigrants in France and Germany are increasingly experiencing challenges integrating into Western lifestyle. They have to adjust to occidental communities in which they try to incorporate their own traditions and values. They experience feelings of simultaneous belonging and rejection at the same time. My research concentrated on the adaptation of Muslim Women in Germany and France. Although many similarities exist between the French and German immigrant groups, it was necessary to examine each one separately. In order to understand Islamic female immigrants' quest for a new identity, it was beneficial not only to address the sociocultural aspects of …
The Evolution Of Product Placement: Consumer Awareness And Ethical Considerations, Leigh Ann Hornick
The Evolution Of Product Placement: Consumer Awareness And Ethical Considerations, Leigh Ann Hornick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Found today in virtually every type of media, the practice of product placement has been around since the First World War. The concept of this form of advertising stems from the idea that studio executives are constantly seeking out cost effective ways to produce movies and marketers' are supporting ways to get their products seen. Moreover, advertisements are becoming a thing of the past with new technological devices that allow viewers to skip commercials. It was found throughout this study that although consumers are aware of the practice and deem it ethical, they still vastly believe it can be a …
Assessing Student Learning Outcomes In Health Professions Service -Learning Courses, Tracey K. Anderson
Assessing Student Learning Outcomes In Health Professions Service -Learning Courses, Tracey K. Anderson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Service learning is a pedagogical method that is currently on the rise in health professions schools as a method of meeting Healthy People 2010 objectives (Narsavage, Lindell, Chen, Savin & Duffy, 2002). The intended result for participating students is an increased awareness of health care issues, civic responsibility, and course content in this learning experience. However, there is no clear assessment documentation that shows health professions students are meeting the intended learning outcomes. Eyler (2000) indicates that outcomes in service learning have not been "well studied and relatively little attention has been given to defining learning outcomes that would be …
Effects Of Diameter And Cross-Sectional Partitioning On Active Noise Control In Round Ducts, Jeremy Michael Slagley
Effects Of Diameter And Cross-Sectional Partitioning On Active Noise Control In Round Ducts, Jeremy Michael Slagley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Active noise control (ANC) is particularly useful in hard-walled ducts where plane waves propagate. Higher order mode waves are much more difficult to control. Basic acoustic principles dictate that the cut-on frequency at which higher order modes will first begin to eclipse simple plane waves in a duct will be determined by the cross-sectional diameter of the duct. The lowest frequency for higher order modes will increase as duct diameter decreases. Therefore, the range of frequencies where plane waves dominate will be greater and effective control using ANC better as duct diameter decreases. The result is that somewhat higher frequencies …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Opequon watershed is in northern Virginia and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. In both states, Opequon Creek is classified as impaired due to violation of the bacteria standard and the narrative General Standard. Both states are using Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) plans to improve water quality. As part of the TMDL process, a contingent valuation survey was developed which would measure the benefits of improved water quality in Opequon watershed. Five thousand surveys were mailed to households in West Virginia and Virginia. Median willingness-to-pay (WTP) values were estimated from grouped tobit models. For in-state water quality improvements, …
Social Status And Behavioral Observations Of Children Exhibiting Comorbid Anxiety And Adhd Symptoms, Daniel B. Chorney
Social Status And Behavioral Observations Of Children Exhibiting Comorbid Anxiety And Adhd Symptoms, Daniel B. Chorney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The development of strong and positive relationships early in childhood is key to later social adjustment. Many behaviors have been shown to be related to children's status among their peers, defining whether they will be seen as popular, rejected, neglected, controversial, or of average status in the child's peer group. Children who display anxious behaviors are often overlooked by their peers, while aggressive and disruptive behaviors can lead to rejection. A small proportion of students display both symptoms of anxiety and ADHD, and prior research fails to show what peer status group most represents these children, or what social interaction …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mute Swans (Cygnus olor) contribute to the localized decline in Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) through foraging in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. I assessed intensity of feeding activity of 868 Mute Swans in non-breeding flocks and breeding pairs through focal sampling during 2003 and 2004. I also assessed SAV reduction due to Mute Swan herbivory by measuring difference in percent cover, shoot density, and canopy height among 2 year controls (n = 54), 2 year exclosures (n = 54), and 1 year exclosures (n = 54) at 18 sites on the eastern shore during the same time period. Analyses of the …
Development And Evaluation Of Smart Materials For Structural Health Monitoring, Sandilya Hota
Development And Evaluation Of Smart Materials For Structural Health Monitoring, Sandilya Hota
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most neat resins, including thermoplastics and thermosets are electrical insulators. However, conductive additives or fillers (such as carbon black, carbon fibers) can be added into resins to produce electrically conductive resins and composite materials. At a specific concentration of conductive filler, electroconductive channels are formed and the insulators are turned into semi-conductors. This transformation process can be described within the framework of the percolation theory. The objective of the present study is to develop conductive polymer composites as sensors in terms of change in their electrical resistance as a function of deformation and other parameters for health monitoring and structural …

Participants received three cancer scenarios framed in either survival or mortality terms, with scenarios presented in cumulative probability, interval probability, and life expectancy format. There were two between-subjects factors and one within-subjects factor. Younger adults exhibited the framing effect with the cumulative and interval probability formats. No framing effect was found in the debias condition. Older adults exhibited the framing effect with the interval probability …
Regulation Of Polymeric Immunoglobulin Receptor By Reovirus In Intestinal Epithelial Cells, Kasturi Pal
Regulation Of Polymeric Immunoglobulin Receptor By Reovirus In Intestinal Epithelial Cells, Kasturi Pal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most pathogens invade the human body through mucosal surfaces. Enteric viruses are one such group of pathogens that are of great public health significance because they cause a number of serious diseases including gastroenteritis, hepatitis and poliomyelitis. Gastrointestinal disease is the second most common cause of morbidity worldwide, with diarrhea ranking first among infectious diseases in the categories of frequency and mortality in children. The mucosal epithelium provides the first line of defense against invading pathogens by serving as the first sensors of microbial infection and launching an innate immune response that leads to the development of adaptive immunity. An …
Soluble Metals Of Residual Oil Fly Ash Alter Pulmonary Host Defense In Rats, Jenny Renee Roberts
Soluble Metals Of Residual Oil Fly Ash Alter Pulmonary Host Defense In Rats, Jenny Renee Roberts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Incidences of high levels of air pollution have been correlated with increased morbidity and mortality in susceptible populations. Inhalation of the combustion-derived pollutant, residual oil fly ash (ROFA), has been shown to impair lung defense mechanisms in laboratory animals and susceptible populations. The hypothesis of these studies was that the soluble metals in ROFA would increase susceptibility to pulmonary infection in rats, and that the primary metal responsible for the increase is soluble Ni. To investigate the hypothesis, three specific aims were established: (1) determine if soluble metals in ROFA cause a decrease in bacterial clearance from the lungs of …
Silent, No More: The 1974 Kanawha County Textbook Controversy And The Rise Of Conservatism In America, Justin J. Mchenry
Silent, No More: The 1974 Kanawha County Textbook Controversy And The Rise Of Conservatism In America, Justin J. Mchenry
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Silent, No More explores the 1974 Kanawha County textbook controversy, and places it within the context of the rise of conservatism in America. This rise can be seen in the upsurge of grassroots, community activism in the seventies, the White Backlash associated with the campaigns of George Wallace, the New Right, and the New Christian Right. The thesis shows how the Kanawha County protestors' words and actions paralleled that of aforementioned conservative movements, creating, in the end, one of the first manifestations of a single-issue conservative uprising in the seventies.
