Local and landscape-scale factors influence peatland floristic assemblages. Our goal in this paper was to assess the interactions between wetland vegetation communities, edaphic factors, and surrounding land cover in central Appalachian peatlands. Specifically we quantified plant community dynamics in relation to edaphic factors and land cover and identified species level responses to human altered landscapes. Cluster analysis on vegetation data identified 3 vegetation groups; an emergent floristic assemblage, a shrub dominated group, and a group with mixed shrub and emergent vegetation. A study was performed to compare measurement capabilities of two commercially available in-use portable emissions measurement systems, from different generations, in order to determine how or if changes to emissions testing standards have affected in-use equipment. The two in-use systems from different generations were the Sensors, Inc. SEMTECH-D, which would be considered first generation because it was built under the CFR 40, Part 86 standard, and the Horiba, Ltd. Stream restoration, involving both in-stream and riparian techniques, was conducted on an impaired stretch of the Cacapon River, West Virginia. Fish and aquatic macroinvertebrate communities were sampled before, during, and after restoration at the restoration site and four other sites (two impaired, two natural) to determine the success of the restoration project. Overall, bluntnose minnows (Pimephales notatus) were the most abundant fish, and riffle beetles (Stenelmis sp.) were the most abundant macroinvertebrates collected. Both communities were negatively impacted by the restoration efforts in the short-term, but recovered quickly. Fish communities returned roughly to the state observed pre-restoration. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing worldwide problem. Patients with CKD are at great risk for multiple health problems and ultimately face end stage renal disease (ESRD). One of the problems of concern is the loss of bone mass, termed mineral bone disorders (MBD). The literature reveals that bone mass loss can begin as early as stage 3 CKD. Labeled cyberbullying, individuals are utilizing technology, such as cell phones and the Internet, to bully and harass others with the intention of causing harm. Most cyberbullying research has been conducted with elementary, middle, and high school-aged students in countries such as Finland, Canada, Taiwan, and Australia. This dissertation addresses issues related to the effectiveness and consequences of state and local spending in the United States. Chapter two examines how merit-based aid tuition assistance contributes to the retention of graduates in a state. An analysis of restricted-use administrative data for West Virginia graduates suggests that in-state college graduates that received merit-based aid to attend college are no more likely to work in the state after graduation, compared to those who did not received the assistance. These graduates are between 1.9 and 5.2 percentage points less likely to remain in the state, decreasing the overall effect of merit-based …

Bias toward individuals who are obese is one of the last bastions of permissible prejudice. The people who are obese report discrimination in a variety of settings; they experience it with families, employers, teachers, and health-care professionals. Research regarding obesity bias indicates that attribution of personal responsibility is correlated with negative attitudes toward individuals who are obese. By examining the effects of landscape disturbance on stream water quality, disturbance thresholds can be calculated from stream conductivity measurements in various segment level watersheds that contain varying levels of landscape disturbance. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the test re-test reliability of three versions of the 3-Cone Test (3CR). In addition, comparisons between the versions of the tests; and the relationships with leg dominance and body mass index (BMI) were to be determined. Forty students enrolled in classes in the Department of Physical Education at a mid-Atlantic university participated. On each of the testing days the participants performed ten total trials. The following study assessed behavioral and psychological services currently being used by bariatric patients before and after surgery. A convenience sample of N = 380 was generated through solicitation on an online support website; inclusion criteria included having had surgery in the United States after implementation of accreditation standards in 2005. Participants completed an Internet-based survey that assessed services completed, satisfaction with services, perceived impact of surgery on mental and physical health as well as diet and physical activity behaviors, and current reported diet and physical activity behaviors. To determine the skeletal and dental changes seen in the sagittal, vertical, and angular directions in a group of patients who had undergone treatment with an inter-arch spring loaded module, the CS2000RTM appliance. Methods. The treatment group consisted of 30 patients treated in the private practice office of Dr. Michael Williams in Gulfport, MS, (15 males, 15 females) with an average pre-treatment age of 9.6 and post-treatment age of 10.9. The average treatment time for the pooled group studied was 1.3 years. This research examined the extent to which future job prospects, peer and parental influence and or intrinsic interest impacted the college major selection processes utilized by freshmen and sophomores. Using a mixed method approach, the researcher interviewed six college recruitment officers, administered surveys to 466 freshmen and sophomores and also conducted a document analysis of college brochures and view books all in a bid to ascertain what combination of factors define the major selection process. This dissertation presents the development of a fault tolerant control scheme for helicopters fitted with individually controlled blades. This novel approach attempts to improve fault tolerant capabilities of helicopter control system by increasing control redundancy using additional actuators for individual blade input and software re-mixing to obtain nominal or close to nominal conditions under failure. Newborn ovary homeobox (NOBOX) is an oocyte-specific transcription factor essential for folliculogenesis and expression of many germ-cell specific genes in mice. However, the temporal and cell specific expression of NOBOX in bovine oocytes and potential function and regulation of NOBOX in early embryogenesis have not been described previously. Messenger RNA for bovine NOBOX is preferentially expressed in ovaries and undetectable by RT-PCR in somatic tissues examined. NOBOX protein is present in oocytes throughout folliculogenesis and is stage-specifically expressed during oocyte maturation and early embryonic development. This study explores the ideology of health care reform in Canada and the United States from 1962 to 1974. During that time, Canada enacted Medicare, which provided a universal physician services program designed by the provinces and supported financially by the federal government. Rejecting a private-sector approach and Quebec's desire for complete autonomy in the program design, the joint federal-provincial program supported the Canadian values of government responsibility for health care (paternal statism) and the belief that Canadians have a responsibility to care for each other (collectivism).;From 1970 to 1974, the U.S. Congress failed to enact any national health insurance …
