Characterization Of M-Cadherin's Role In Regulating Apoptosis And Myogenic Differentiation Of Myoblasts By Interacting With Key Components Of Canonical Wnt Signaling, Yan Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Activation, proliferation, and differentiation of satellite cells are the basic means for adult muscle regeneration. Apoptosis is concurrent to differentiation of satellite cells and dysregulated apoptosis contributes to the occurrence and progression of certain muscular dystrophies. This study investigated the role of M-cadherin-mediated signaling in regulating apoptosis versus survival of myoblasts during the process of myogenic differentiation. Inhibition of M-cadherin expression by RNAi (RNA interference) in confluent C2C12 myoblasts sensitized the cells to mitochondria-associated intrinsic apoptosis induced by either cell confluence or serum starvation. Manipulation of M-cadherin signaling regulated the Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) activity via phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway. …

Failure to follow clinical guidelines for lipid disorders leads to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The objective of the project was to evaluate whether a simple, paper-based, lipid tracking form could improve provider adherence to current lipid guidelines. This descriptive study used …

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain Aug 2011

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years several mechanistic animal studies have proposed new insights, including the role of endothelial dysfunction, in the pathogenesis of common cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies in humans have followed up these emerging leads from animal models. Because traditional risk factors have been shown not to completely explain all the observed risk of cardiometabolic outcomes in the general population, there is a need to examine novel mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction in population-based studies, so as to identify new ways of preventing and/or treating these diseases. …

Clinician Detection Of Depression In Late Life, Jeffrey J. Gregg Aug 2011

Clinician Detection Of Depression In Late Life, Jeffrey J. Gregg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depression in late life is associated with decreased cognitive functioning, increased social and functional impairment, and overall increased mortality. Because of these negative health implications, the accurate assessment of late-life depression is a critical public health issue. Prior research has consistently demonstrated that older adults typically seek and receive mental health services from general medical settings instead of mental health specialty clinics. Unfortunately, many studies have shown that primary care physicians often fail to recognize depression. In addition, older adults are less likely than younger adults to endorse symptoms of sadness or dysphoria. Those with cognitive impairment are also less …

Characterization And Genetic Manipulation Of Ergot Pathway Inefficiency In Fungi, Prashanthi Mulinti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ergot alkaloids are mycotoxins that negatively affect humans and animals but also have useful pharmaceutical properties. Ergot alkaloids have been extensively studied in Claviceps purpurea, and also have been reported in other fungi, such as certain Penicillium spp., Aspergillus fumigatus, and several Neotyphodium spp. that are endophytes of grasses. There is a high degree of variation in the production of ergot alkaloids within an individual species and among producers from different taxa, which means different fungi accumulate different profiles of ergot alkaloids rather than a single pathway end product. These varied profiles result, in part, from inefficiency in the pathway …

In The Crosshairs: Second Amendment Lawyers And Cases In State And Federal Appellate Courts, H. Carl Taylor Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Judicial behavior, the types of activities and behaviors judges become involved with in their capacity on the bench, has a profound and lasting impact on the types of decisions rendered by judges across all courts that comprise the American judiciary (Baum 2000; Baum 2006; Maveety 2002). There is a growing realization that judicial behavior encompasses more than just the making of good laws and public policy decisions (Baum, 2000; Baum 2006; Hammond, Bonneau, & Sheehan 2005; Comparato 2003). For example, Songer & Haire (1992) explore integrated approaches to the study of judicial voting through obscenity cases in the U.S. Courts …

Study On Surface Tension And Evaporation Rate Of Human Saliva, Saline, And Water Droplets, Tian Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cough, sometimes shedding plenty of germs and virus, is the human body's way of cleaning the breathing passages. The virus and germs spread rapidly through ambient air among humans and may cause infection. To reduce ultimately the infections caused by the germs and virus contained in human saliva droplets, it is necessary to understand the vaporization process of human saliva and its role on virus transmission. Virus-laden droplets, shed by an infected person through coughing and sneezing, evaporate until becoming droplet nuclei which will remain airborne for a long time and can infect other people. In other words, evaporation rate …
