A Question Of Life Or Death: Suicide And Survival In The Union Army, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis
A Question Of Life Or Death: Suicide And Survival In The Union Army, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studying the Civil War soldier involves a quest to comprehend how they soldiers understood and managed their war experiences. Under the conditions of soldier life and the horrific violence of Civil War battles, mental trauma and suicide would not be unthinkable consequences. Union soldiers did commit suicide during the war, sometimes in response to the trauma of battle, hospital, or prison camp. However, suicide in fact was a very small percentage of casualties in the Union army, representing less than one percent of the losses during the war.;This thesis examines the dual nature of suicide in the Union army. On …
Habitat Use By Northern Dusky Salamanders In Riparian Corridors Of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Robert Joseph Michalow
Habitat Use By Northern Dusky Salamanders In Riparian Corridors Of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Robert Joseph Michalow
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Amphibian populations have decreased in many parts of the world and the rate of decline has increased over the past 25 years. Much of the population decline can be attributed to habitat fragmentation, thus, possibly forming metapopulations. The semi-aquatic northern dusky salamander belongs to the family Plethodontidae and the genus Desmognathus. Amphibians, such as salamanders, may occupy undisturbed forest floors with biomass equal to, or exceeding, the biomass of other vertebrate groups and they can achieve their highest densities in ancient or undisturbed forests. Salamander densities can be estimated using cover items and this method has become a more common …
Pharmacological Characterization Of Sigma-2 Preferring Compounds: Implications In Cocaine-Induced Behaviors, Bahar Noorbakhsh
Pharmacological Characterization Of Sigma-2 Preferring Compounds: Implications In Cocaine-Induced Behaviors, Bahar Noorbakhsh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cocaine is a powerful psychostimulant that is highly abused by 1.9 million people in the United States. It accounts for more emergency department visits than any other illicit drug. Even with the high rate of cocaine abuse, no FDA approved pharmacological treatments exist. Many attempts at finding a pharmacotherapy for cocaine abuse and addiction have been made, but proven unsuccessful. Cocaine is known to bind sigma receptors at physiologically relevant concentrations, deeming them potential targets for cocaine pharmacotherapies and helping to elucidate the actions of cocaine. Two subtypes of sigma receptors have been described, sigma-1 and sigma-2. Minimal information is …
Chirality Sorted Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes For Random Network Thin Film Applications, Volkan Ozyar
Chirality Sorted Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes For Random Network Thin Film Applications, Volkan Ozyar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are comprised entirely of carbon atoms which lie in a graphitic plane rolled into a seamless cylinder. The direction in which the graphic plane is rolled affects the subsequent chiralities of the SWNTs. This direction is called the chiral vector. This chiral vector, Ch =na1+ma2, is described in terms of a pair of integers (n,m) and a pair of lattice vectors (a1,a2) associated with each carbon atom in the graphene sheet. The magnitude of the chiral vector determines the diameter of the nanotubes as d= Ch/pi. SWNTs with integers n-m =3i, where i = 0, 1, …

Three Essays On Political Economy And Development, Adam Pellillo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a collection of three essays that examine how political economy and institutional factors influence development outcomes. In Chapter 1, I introduce each essay and argue that it is important to incorporate political economy and institutional considerations into studies in development economics. Chapter 2 examines the political economy of development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by assessing the impact of conflict and local insecurity on household-level economic conditions across the country. Chapter 3 analyzes the political economy of infant mortality rates across the developing world by using an usually large microlevel dataset for 70 developing countries. …
Living Pictures: Performances Of Jewishness In Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century American Novels, Nevena Stojanovic
Living Pictures: Performances Of Jewishness In Late Nineteenth- And Early Twentieth-Century American Novels, Nevena Stojanovic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My dissertation examines the relationship between Jewish identity and performance in non- Jewish novelists' portrayals of tableaux vivants, or living pictures. As a performance genre imported from Europe, the tableau vivant was a frequent element of nineteenth-century American fiction and a popular pastime of middle- and upper-class Americans in the 1800s. Since living pictures were ideologically coded---in general, designed to motivate viewers, mostly women, to adopt the patriarchal values invoked through the performance, such as chastity, purity, and piety---scholarship on the application of tableaux vivants primarily focuses on gender and class. My dissertation contributes to these discussions by highlighting the …

Evaluation Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy And A Standard Parenting Program Within A Women's State Prison Facility, Ashley B. Tempel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A majority of inmates in state and federal prisons across the U.S. have been reported to be parents of minors (Glaze & Maruschak, 2008). It is estimated that twice as many American children (i.e., 2% or over 1.7 million) compared to children of other industrialized countries have incarcerated parents (Murray, 2007). Approximately 336, 000 households with minor children are believed to be directly affected by parental imprisonment (Mumola, 2000). Parent training provided through correctional programming has potential to impact a large number of American families that are affected by parental incarceration. However, correctional parenting programs often vary across facilities and …

Health Literacy And Self-Efficacy As Correlates Of Self-Management Of Type 2 Diabetes In Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Tomorrow D. Wilson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing with middle-aged and older adults being those at highest risk for developing this disease. Additionally, the demands of type 2 diabetes self-management can become difficult with age, which can result in poorer glycemic control. The current study examined the relations of health literacy, diabetes-related distress, and diabetes self-efficacy on diabetes self-management among 65 adults aged 40-66 with type 2 diabetes. Age was found to be positively associated with health literacy, but negatively associated with diabetes self-care activities. Additionally, only diabetes self-efficacy was found to be a unique contributor to diabetes self-care activities …
Forest Regeneration: Perceptions Of Natural Resource Professionals In West Virginia, Ellen Lee Voss
Forest Regeneration: Perceptions Of Natural Resource Professionals In West Virginia, Ellen Lee Voss
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It has generally been assumed that natural hardwood regeneration in West Virginia after a timber harvest or other disturbance will be abundant and successful. However, changes that are being observed in the seedling and sapling components of forest stands suggest that problems may exist with regeneration of desirable species. Factors affecting regeneration have been the topic of conversation among foresters and other natural resource professionals for years. To address the need for more information about this issue, we conducted a mail survey of natural resource professionals (NRPs) in West Virginia. The objectives of the survey were to determine how they …

How Big Is Big Coal? Public Perceptions Of The Coal Industry's Economic Impact On West Virginia., Debra R. Blaacker
How Big Is Big Coal? Public Perceptions Of The Coal Industry's Economic Impact On West Virginia., Debra R. Blaacker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The coal industry has played a major role in the culture and history of the state of West Virginia, establishing an identity as the “backbone” of the economy in this region. However, as the mining process has become more mechanized, employment has declined and risks have increased, but support for the industry continues. This study explores research that could provide explanations for this phenomenon, and examines whether there is an overestimation of the role of the coal industry in the regional economy. I also examine factors that may affect one’s perceptions of the economic impact of the industry. In particular, …

Comprehensive Model Of Lung Cancer Prediction And Prognosis, Joseph J. Putila
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two unresolved issues in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer are the assessment of risk of recurrence beyond the use of tumor stage alone, and the selection of an effective chemotherapeutic agent for patients with similar tumor morphology. A prognostic model able to identify high or low-risk patients with a high degree of accuracy can be used to inform clinicians on potential improvements to the current clinical practice. Clinical presentation, pathology, demographics, and genomics have been independently verified as influencing survival. A comprehensive model capable of incorporating multiple predictors into a unified measure has the potential to simplify risk …

Predictors Of Adherence To Mammography Screening Guidelines And Preferences For Intervention Strategies In A Mobile Mammography Program, Ami Vyas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early detection of breast cancer (BC) in women can lead to long-term survival and better quality of life. Mammography screening is considered to be the 'gold standard' for women at an average risk to detect BC early and hence reduce BC-related mortality. West Virginia (WV) has a lower incidence of BC but higher rates of advanced and unstaged BC which has been attributed to lower mammography screening rates in women in WV. Mobile mammography programs have been in use for more than two decades to overcome barriers and increase mammography screening rates in rural and hard-to-reach populations. WV has one …

Discrete Wavelet Transform Analysis Of Surface Electromyography For The Objective Assessment Of Neck And Shoulder Muscle Fatigue, Suman Kanti Chowdhury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Objective assessment of neuromuscular fatigue caused by sub-maximal repetitive exertions is essential for the early detection and prevention of risks of neck and shoulder musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been used to evaluate muscle fatigue, especially during dynamic contractions when the SEMG signal is non-stationary. However, its application to neck muscle fatigue assessment is not well established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish DWT analysis as a suitable method to conduct quantitative assessment of neck muscle fatigue caused by dynamic exertions. Ten human participants performed 40 minutes of …

Distributed Estimation Of A Parametric Field Using Spatially Sparse Noisy Data., Marwan M. Alkhweldi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem of distributed estimation of a parametric physical field is stated as a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem. Spatially sparse sensor observations are distorted by additive white Gaussian noise. These observations are then communicated over parallel additive white Gaussian channels to the fusion center (FC) for a joint estimation. This work studies cases of both analog and digital channels. In the case of the analog channel, each sensor transmits its observation without any prior processing. A Newton’s method is used to iteratively solve for ML estimates of unknown parameters of the field. In the case of the digital channel, …

Coca Or Death! The Political Ecology Of Cocalero Resistance A Comparative Analysis Of The Coca Farmer Social Movement In Andean Peru., Timothy Scott Pruett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research focuses on the resistance of coca farmers to government policies regarding coca production in Peru. Since the 1980s, the Peruvian government has criminalized the actions of numerous agricultural communities and conducted eradication campaigns that destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of Peruvian coca. Although eradication is intended to reduce the volume of coca leaves destined for black markets (cocaine production), it has had the unintended consequence of mobilizing peasant coca producing populations against such policies. Mobilization is reflected in protests, strikes, marches, and occasionally violent confrontations. Some coca farmers (cocaleros) are following a cultural heritage of producing a …

The Relationships Between Perinatal Loss Interventions At The Time Of Stillbirth And Maternal Grief., Peggy Lambert Fink
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Annually there are approximately 26,000 stillbirths in the United States. The loss of a child has the ability to derail life’s trajectory like no other loss, and stillbirth can significantly affect a woman’s relationships, her health, and future childbearing. Stillbirth interventions provided in the hospital are intended to provide comfort and support and assist women as they grieve. Stillbirth interventions have evolved over the last 30 years, but there have been no evaluations of interventions to determine if they were helpful to grieving mothers. This study, therefore, evaluated the impact of interventions provided at the time of …

Implementation Of Wet Scrubbing Technologies To Marine Diesel Engines For The Reduction Of Nitrigen Oxide Emissions., Derek R. Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diesel engines are known for their reliability and fuel economy when compared to their gasoline counterparts. They are the engine of choice for application in marine vessels but are also known contributors of regulated emissions, especially oxides of nitrogen (NOx). NOx emissions have both negative health and environmental effects, which are exacerbated in port regions where marine activity is high. Recent emissions regulations have dramatically reduced engine out emissions for on-road and off-road engines by requiring new technologies but mainly apply to those newly produced. Marine diesel engines have useful lives of over 20 years. The focus of this research …
