Development Of Hydrogel Tracer Beads And Comparative Tracer Tests To Better Understand Contaminant Fate And Transport In Karst Systems, Amanda Laskoskie
Development Of Hydrogel Tracer Beads And Comparative Tracer Tests To Better Understand Contaminant Fate And Transport In Karst Systems, Amanda Laskoskie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Karst aquifers can be highly susceptible to contamination due to a close connection to the land surface, lack of filtration through a soil zone, and rapid transmission along solutionally-enhanced flowpaths. These factors also allow for aquifer contamination by direct injection of immiscible organic compounds in the form of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). The fate and transport of NAPLs in karst aquifers is poorly understood. Tracer tests allow for qualitative characterization of hydraulic flow in the surface and subsurface, but their results may not be applicable to the movement of NAPL for which density plays a critical role. Particulate tracers have …

Characterization Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter In Mountaintop Mining And Non-Mining Areas In West Virginia With Known Health Differences, Laura M. Kurth
Characterization Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter In Mountaintop Mining And Non-Mining Areas In West Virginia With Known Health Differences, Laura M. Kurth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Mortality and morbidity rates in the Appalachian region are higher than in the national population. People who live in Appalachian areas where coal mining is prominent have increased health problems compared to people in non-mining areas of Appalachia. Health disparities remain higher in mining areas even after adjusting for lifestyle and demographic effects illustrating that additional factors, such as environmental influences, are associated with adverse health outcomes. Coal mines and coal mining activities result in the production of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), which is associated with environmental and human health effects. Environmental studies of air and water quality in …

A Systematic Study Of Enzyme-Nanomaterial Interactions For Application In Active Surface Decontamination, Alan Steven Campbell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Enzymes are a catalytic class of proteins that possess high specificity, selectivity and biocompatibility, which makes them ideal for multiple applications in industrial production and biotechnology. However, the use of enzymes in such applications is limited due to their low operational stability and increased cost attributed to difficulty of purification and reuse. Immobilization of enzymes onto nano-sized solid supports has emerged as a potential solution to these shortcomings with a trade-off of a percentage of activity loss upon immobilization. Herein, a comprehensive study of enzyme immobilization techniques with emphasis on active-surface decontamination applications is presented.;In Chapter 1, an overview of …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heavy-duty natural gas engines compliant with the 2010 EPA emissions standards have a clear advantage over diesel engines in meeting regulations with minimal after-treatment configuration. Heavy-duty natural gas engines are largely promoted as a cleaner burning engine with respect to low PM mass emissions. However, lack of sufficient data and literature on the exhaust emissions from advanced natural gas engines and the potential adverse health effects has raised concern amongst regulatory agencies. Also, the ammonia emissions from three-way catalyst equipped heavy-duty natural gas engines could be a major contributor to the formation of secondary PM in the atmosphere.;This CARB funded …

Analysis Of Gas Phase Composition In Fuel And Exhaust Gas In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Wei Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Direct utilization of coal syngas in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell faces a number of challenges. One of the impediments to the implementation of SOFCs is their degradation in the presence of impurities in the fuel. Phosphine (PH 3) is present in coal syngas at ppm levels, and a number of researches have shown that the nickel anode is damaged by long term exposure to ppm levels of phosphine in various fuels. Because phosphine is exposed to high temperatures (~800°C) and varying amounts of water and oxygen in fuels, the exact nature of the phosphorus species reaching the anode is unknown. …

Baseline Water Chemistry Characterization In An Area Of Developing Shale Gas Activity, Patrick C. Eisenhauer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The recent increase in the development of shale formations for the purpose of natural gas extraction in the mid-Atlantic, namely the Marcellus shale, can be attributed to advances in unconventional extraction methods. This includes horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing, a process that uses water to pressurize and fracture relatively impermeable shale layers to release natural gas. In West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates 95 to 105 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of expected ultimate recovery (EUR) of natural gas from this formation [ALL Consulting, 2010]. Increased development of unconventional shale gas formations are accompanied by concerns of potential …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Weight gain among United States' children, adolescents and adults has become a pandemic problem, and is of great public health concern, given the increased risk for myriad chronic health problems and associated medical expenditures. It is well established that increased energy expenditure through physical activity may reduce weight and improve health. However, the predominant focus of this research has been with moderate to vigorous levels of activity (MVPA). A growing body of evidence suggests that activity levels below this (i.e., light levels), may also be beneficial. Specific to light activity, a recent area of focus has been on non-exercise activity …

Crowning The May Queen In Freshwater Place: Housing Reformers And The Uses Of Urban Nature, 1850-1914, Christine E. Regier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ideas about nature change over time, yet the term is often used as though its meaning were universal. This study of the uses of nature in working-class housing reform in Victorian and early twentieth-century London deconstructs concepts of nature to reveal the social and cultural norms on which these concepts rely. The first efforts to provide sanitary housing to replace the London slums began in the 1840s. Model dwellings companies built housing blocks designed to give the poor access to three natural resources important in sanitation: clean water, fresh air and sunlight. They operated on a model of commercial philanthropy, …
