An Ideal Role, Twenty Years Too Soon: A Young Actor's Journey Through The Role Of Leonard In "Seminar", Nicholas Ryan Jan 2015

An Ideal Role, Twenty Years Too Soon: A Young Actor's Journey Through The Role Of Leonard In "Seminar", Nicholas Ryan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Through our production of Seminar, unique challenges were uncovered for an actor performing the role of Leonard. My goal is to examine some of the most difficult and interesting challenges that arose from an unrealistic casting of a realistic play. Issues discussed will be the age gap between Leonard and the students, and what contextually needs to be researched from the script. This examination also addresses the balance of comedy versus drama in regards to Leonard's character relationships with the students, and Leonard's place as a stock character in contemporary theater.

Theory Of Flame Propagation In Open Obstructed Channels, Jad Sadek Jan 2015

Theory Of Flame Propagation In Open Obstructed Channels, Jad Sadek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Obstructed pipes constitute one of the most relevant configurations for extremely fast premixed flame acceleration and deflagration-to-detonation transition. While the flame propagation through obstacles is often associated with turbulence and/or shocks, a conceptually-laminar and shockless mechanism of extremely fast flame acceleration in semi-open "tooth-brush"-like obstructed pipes has been developed by Bychkov et al [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 (2008) 164501]. Namely, a flame front is ignited at the closed end of a pipe, with the flame propagating towards the open pipe end. This acceleration scenario is devoted to a powerful jet-flow, which is produced by delayed combustion in the spaces …

Kinematic Basis For Body Specific Locomotor Mechanics And Perturbation Responses, Ryan B. Ross Jan 2015

Kinematic Basis For Body Specific Locomotor Mechanics And Perturbation Responses, Ryan B. Ross

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Animals have evolved mechanical and neural strategies for locomotion in almost every environment, overcoming the complexities of their habitats using specializations in body structure and animal behavior. These specializations are created by neural networks responsible for generating and altering muscle activation. Species specific musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology determine how locomotion is controlled through the transformation of motor patterns into body movements. Furthermore, when these species specific locomotor systems encounter perturbations during running and walking their behavioral and mechanical attributes determine how stability is established during and after the perturbation. It is still not understood how species specific structural and behavioral …

Protest Tactics And Motivations Surrounding Mountaintop Removal Mining In West Virginia, Craig Zell Jan 2015

Protest Tactics And Motivations Surrounding Mountaintop Removal Mining In West Virginia, Craig Zell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social movements have been studied in a wide variety of ways. From the use of resource mobilization and political opportunity structure to the new social movement theories. In my paper I discuss how the use of identity and tactics is crucial in understanding how the social movement surrounding anti-mountaintop removal mining in West Virginia works. I studied two groups within this particular movement that use very different tactics as means to the same end. By analyzing them with the use of NSM theory I show how a multi-group approach to studying social movements gives a lot of information on the …

In Study One, participant SAHMs and WMs (N = 529) reported on their outgroup attitudes, affective responses (i.e., contempt, admiration, envy, and pity), behavioral responses (i.e., active/passive facilitation, active/passive harm), intergroup anxiety, and willingness to communicate after viewing a description of a target SAHM or WM designed in accordance with the most prevalent stereotypes of SAHMs and WMs …

Changing Vulnerabilities In A Changing Climate: Farming Opportunity And Constraint In Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania, Paul O'Keefe Jan 2015

Changing Vulnerabilities In A Changing Climate: Farming Opportunity And Constraint In Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania, Paul O'Keefe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation demonstrates that the vulnerability of households to both socioeconomic and environmental processes is found in unequal, differentiated ability to access the means of social production and reproduction. Place specific environmental and social factors co-produce specific manifestations of vulnerability, but the underlying causes and driving forces are to be found in the social formation and social relations of households in the case study area. The major finding of this dissertation is that changes in the social relations of production and reproduction are creating as much risk to livelihoods as climate change does, or is likely to do in the …

Synchronization Of Coupled And Periodically Forced Chemical Oscillators, Razan Snari Jan 2015

Synchronization Of Coupled And Periodically Forced Chemical Oscillators, Razan Snari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Physiological rhythms are essential in all living organisms. Such rhythms are regulated through the interactions of many cells. Deviation of a biological system from its normal rhythms can lead to physiological maladies. The tremor and symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease are thought to emerge from abnormal synchrony of neuronal activity within the neural network of the brain. Deep brain stimulation is a therapeutic technique that can remove this pathological synchronization by the application of a periodic desynchronizing signal. Herein, we used the photosensitive Belousov--Zhabotinsky (BZ) chemical reaction to test the mechanism of deep brain stimulation. A collection of oscillators are …

The Cold Culture Wars: The Fight For Democratic Education In Post-War New York, Brandon C. Williams Jan 2015

The Cold Culture Wars: The Fight For Democratic Education In Post-War New York, Brandon C. Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores how the American public school system has become the primary institution for citizens to project, contest, or affirm their values. Primarily, this revolves around competing ideas of democratic education. After World War II, politicians utilized the schools to propagate American democracy, while citizens viewed education as a means to reconstruct the post-war democratic order. Although most representatives acknowledged the schools needed to guard democracy and stem totalitarian aggression, few agreed on how education should accomplish such a feat. Consequently, "democratic education" deviated from its theoretical moorings and found a newly nationalistic expression in a Cold War era …

First Year Biomass Production Following Application Of Various Size Strip Thinnings In A Young Hardwood Stand In West Virginia., Ashlee Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Strip thinning can reduce stand density to promote better growth of residual trees and has potential to create a woody bioenergy feedstock in addition to enhancing and maintaining early successional habitat for wildlife. However, little research has been conducted on strip thinning within young hardwood stands to determine if these are viable attributes of strip thinning. The goal of this study was to assess the first year biomass production after strip thinning among three different cut strip widths (8 ft, 12 ft, and 16 ft) in a 22-year-old mixed mesophytic hardwood stand. Woody biomass production from stump sprouts and true …

Predicting Adolescents' Intentions To Engage In Fire Risk Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Janelle M. Mentrikoski Jan 2015

Predicting Adolescents' Intentions To Engage In Fire Risk Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Janelle M. Mentrikoski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Burn injuries are a serious health concern for youth. In particular, adolescents are at risk for sustaining burn injuries, with recent estimates suggesting that adolescents make up nearly 30% of the burn injury cases treated in emergency departments in the United States. Despite the prevalence of burn injuries in adolescents, little research has examined possible correlates of adolescent fire-risk behavior (e.g., using accelerants to start a fire). To facilitate a better understanding of adolescent fire-risk behavior, the current study will use Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a theoretical model. The TPB suggests that an individual's attitude towards the …

Three Essays On Financial Economics, Li Sun Jan 2015

Three Essays On Financial Economics, Li Sun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation analyzes households' asset allocation decisions and studies how the financial crisis affects income distribution using panel datasets from household surveys. The first essay focuses on how the precautionary saving motive can affect households' asset allocation decisions. It develops a life-cycle model that explicitly accounts for the effects of potential future expenditure shocks; the implications of this model better match the empirically observed investment behaviors of households. A precautionary index is constructed to measure the adequacy of households' precautionary saving, and it is found that this factor has significant explanatory power regarding households' stock market participation and risky asset …

Predictive Scenario For Premixed Methane-Air Flame Spreading And Explosion Triggering In A Mining Passage, Sri Hari Ramakrishna Chalagalla Jan 2015

Predictive Scenario For Premixed Methane-Air Flame Spreading And Explosion Triggering In A Mining Passage, Sri Hari Ramakrishna Chalagalla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To reveal the inner mechanism of gas explosion, the entire scenario of premixed flame front evolution within an accidental fire is prescribed, quantitatively, with the situation of a methane-air explosion in a mining passage as the primary application. Specifically, the key stages of flame evolution are scrutinized. First, a globally-spherical expansion of a centrally-ignited, embryonic flame, with a possibility of self-similar acceleration caused by the hydrodynamic (Darrieus-Landau) instability occurs. This stage provides an order of magnitude increase in the flame speed in realistically large mining passages. Second, a transition from a globally-spherical front to a finger-shaped one happens, when a …
