Data were gathered from the tunnel operated under steady-state conditions and at three different volumetric …
Real Deposit Insurance Limits, The Moral Hazard Problem, And Bank Failure., Jacqueline Khorassani
Real Deposit Insurance Limits, The Moral Hazard Problem, And Bank Failure., Jacqueline Khorassani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation investigates an explanation for the high failure rate among depository institutions during 1980s and early 1990s. The moral hazard hypothesis contends that, in the presence of deposit insurance, banks have an incentive to acquire riskier assets than they should because insured depositors, secure in the knowledge that their funds are safe in any event, will not penalize the institution by withdrawing their funds or requiring that a risk premium be added to the rates paid on their deposits. Thus, the moral hazard hypothesis relies on the behavior of two groups of agents, depositors and banks, and the linkage …
Measuring The Benefits Of Air Quality Improvement: A Spatial Hedonic Approach., Chong Won Kim
Measuring The Benefits Of Air Quality Improvement: A Spatial Hedonic Approach., Chong Won Kim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The United Nations Environment Programme and the World Health Organization (1994) reported that Seoul has serious problems with sulfur dioxide. The primary objective of this study is to improve the methodology for estimating hedonic price functions when the data are inherently spatial in nature. The secondary objective is to estimate the marginal value of air pollution abatement in the Seoul metropolitan area. The hedonic property value model is employed to achieve this goal. To attain the primary objective, this study explicitly considers the spatial effects of housing prices in estimating the hedonic property value price function. Spatial weight matrices are …
Effects Of Membrane Rotation And Transmembrane Pressure On The High-Shear Rotary Ultrafiltration Of An Oily Wastewater., Roger C. Viadero
Effects Of Membrane Rotation And Transmembrane Pressure On The High-Shear Rotary Ultrafiltration Of An Oily Wastewater., Roger C. Viadero
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Large volumes of spent oil-in-water emulsions are produced in the metal-working industry. The treatment of oily wastewaters with conventional membrane separation technologies is limited by the low permeate flux observed at high oil concentrations due to difficulty pumping concentrated solutions at high recirculation velocities. In the high-shear rotary ultrafiltration (UF) unit, disk membranes are rotated at speeds up to 1,750 rpm to generate hydraulic turbulence which scours the membrane surface. Thus, the pump is required only to provide transmembrane pressure and a small amount of recirculation. The objective of this research was to perform a parametric waste-specific study on the …

Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka
Collective Phenomena In A Magnetized Plasma With A Field-Aligned Drift And Inhomogeneous Transverse Flow., Valeri V. Gavrichtchaka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using a general, second-order, nonlocal formalism (Ganguli et al., 1985, 1988, 1994), we find that multiple Inhomogeneous Energy-Density Driven (IEDD) nonlocal eigenmodes with comparable growth rates are possible for a given set of parameters. This is in contrast to local modes and to most of the nonlocal modes, where the "the ground state" is usually most unstable. This finding suggests a possible explanation of the broadband and spiky spectrum of IEDD waves seen in laboratory experiments (Koepke et al., 1994, 1995; Amatucci et al., 1994; Carroll et al., 1996) and in Particle-In-Cell simulations (Nishikawa et al., 1988, 1990). We develop …

Secondarily, the objective was to elucidate the steps which critically influence ion-complexed protein dissolution, and assess the magnitude of their effect. In Phase I of dissolution methodology development, studies of the device hydrodynamics concluded that …
Analysis Of Regulatory Regions Within The First Intron Of The Estrogen-Inducible Chicken Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Franklin David Shuler
Analysis Of Regulatory Regions Within The First Intron Of The Estrogen-Inducible Chicken Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Franklin David Shuler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During periods of egg laying in the chicken, when circulating levels of estrogen are increased, the liver-specific estrogen-dependent very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDL II) gene is expressed. Transcription is accompanied by estrogen-dependent, liver-specific changes in the chromatin conformation within and surrounding the gene. One of the regions that changes in conformation is in the promoter where the estrogen receptor along with multiple liver-specific and ubiquitous transcription factors interact in a cooperative manner to assemble a functional transcriptional initiation complex. However, the apoVLDL II gene is expressed at higher levels when the first intron is added to the promoter. Since …

Nucleation And Growth Of Gan On Sapphire By Mbe, Steven Buczkowski
Nucleation And Growth Of Gan On Sapphire By Mbe, Steven Buczkowski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
GaN was grown by molecular beam epitaxy in an effort to determine nucleation and growth conditions which lead to high quality, single-crystal films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to show that growth under Ga-rich conditions promotes the nucleation of films with large nucleation domains leading to a lower density of intrinsic defects related to domain boundaries. These conditions are also shown to promote a 2-D growth mode resulting in films with a high degree of nucleation domain coalescence and surface roughnesses below 2 nm. Addition of atomic hydrogen, using a thermally-cracked source, is shown to increase the growth rate …
