Pedagogical Practices: Nurturing And Maintaining Democratic Habits, Lucretia Marie Hubler-Larimore Aug 2011

Pedagogical Practices: Nurturing And Maintaining Democratic Habits, Lucretia Marie Hubler-Larimore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This case study examined the pedagogical practices of four teachers of one public elementary school whose mission seeks to nurture and maintain democratic habits for participation in a democratic society. Historically, public schools have been charged with the duty of preparing young minds to live within in a democratic society and as such this argument has been cited as one of the fundamental reasons for providing public financial support of schools. The exploration of how pedagogical choices and curriculum development were used to create opportunities for experiencing democracy was considered within the specific social contexts of the school. Contexts considered …

Sensor Fusion Based Fault-Tolerant Attitude Estimation Solutions For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Jason Nicholas Gross Aug 2011

Sensor Fusion Based Fault-Tolerant Attitude Estimation Solutions For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Jason Nicholas Gross

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Navigation-grade inertial sensors are often too expensive and too heavy for use in most Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (SUAV) systems. Low-cost Micro-Electrical-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) inertial sensors provide an attractive alternative, but currently do not provide an adequate navigation solution alone due to the presence of sensor bias. Toward addressing this problem, this research focuses on the development and experimental evaluation of sensor fusion algorithms to combine partially redundant information from low-cost sensor to achieve accurate SUAV attitude estimation. To conduct this research, several sets of SUAVs flight data that include measurements from a low-cost MEMS based Inertial Measurement Unit, a Global …

Hydrothermal Pretreatment Of Biomass Samples For Producing Energy Efficient Hydrogen Electrochemically, Laila P. Akkineni Aug 2011

Hydrothermal Pretreatment Of Biomass Samples For Producing Energy Efficient Hydrogen Electrochemically, Laila P. Akkineni

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis, electrochemical production of hydrogen (H2) gas using two biomass materials, namely microcrystalline cellulose and wood sawdust, has been investigated. Since as obtained samples did not show meaningful activity in hydrogen production, these samples were subjected to hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) in an autoclave using water as solvent at 200° C and up to 500 psi pressure. The HTP samples produced activity as high as that of high surface area activated carbon (BP2000) for producing H2 at energy efficient voltages.;To understand the changes produced by HTP, structural properties of the parent as well as the HTP samples were determined …

A Comparison Of Methods For Evaluating Descriptive Analyses, Ellen N. Brosh Aug 2011

A Comparison Of Methods For Evaluating Descriptive Analyses, Ellen N. Brosh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Descriptive analyses, in which observers record behavior in the natural environment, are the most common procedure for completing functional behavioral assessments in schools. Because numerous studies have demonstrated that descriptive analyses do not consistently identify response-reinforcer relations, the frequent use of these assessments by educators is problematic. Attempts to improve the accuracy of descriptive analyses have focused on methods for analyzing descriptive assessment data. The current study compared three methods of analysis commonly cited in the behavior-analytic literature to determine whether these analyses produced similar results. Additionally, we included a treatment component to evaluate whether these methods of analysis produced …

Clinician Detection Of Depression In Late Life, Jeffrey J. Gregg Aug 2011

Clinician Detection Of Depression In Late Life, Jeffrey J. Gregg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depression in late life is associated with decreased cognitive functioning, increased social and functional impairment, and overall increased mortality. Because of these negative health implications, the accurate assessment of late-life depression is a critical public health issue. Prior research has consistently demonstrated that older adults typically seek and receive mental health services from general medical settings instead of mental health specialty clinics. Unfortunately, many studies have shown that primary care physicians often fail to recognize depression. In addition, older adults are less likely than younger adults to endorse symptoms of sadness or dysphoria. Those with cognitive impairment are also less …

Quantifying The Reliability Of Latent Fingerprint Matching Via Signal Detection Theory, Eric J. Widman Aug 2011

Quantifying The Reliability Of Latent Fingerprint Matching Via Signal Detection Theory, Eric J. Widman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The definition of standards in fingerprint identification is currently an issue of discussion in the field. Quantitative standards have been used in the past to provide justifications for conclusions; however, a scientific basis for relying on numerical standards alone currently does not exist. The tradeoff for this combined approach is that conclusions are based on a conclusion that is left to the judgment of the examiner and may not be repeatable. To test the implementation of thresholds for conclusion, this research studied the effects of only considering concrete data in quantitative form. In this case, signal detection theory is applied …

Spatial Features Of Okun's Law Using U.S. Data, Casto Martin Montero Kuscevic Aug 2011

Spatial Features Of Okun's Law Using U.S. Data, Casto Martin Montero Kuscevic

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation addresses issues related to the regional labor market interactions within the United States using the Okun's Law as theoretical framework. In chapter one I estimate the state-level Okun's law after accounting for national changes and spatial spillovers. The estimates show that state-specific growth has a small effect on state unemployment rate changes. State growth experiences that are part of national or regional growths have a substantially bigger effect on state unemployment rates. I compare my results with international data which show a much larger association after accounting for time effects and spatial spillovers; implying that uncoordinated state-level demand …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trout fillets, subjected to refrigeration (4°C; 3 or 7 d) by frozen storage (-25°C; 0 or 30 d) combinations, were cooked; texture, determined by a novel, variable-blade (VB) attachment, was compared with a widely-used Allo-Kramer shear (AK) attachment to determined its sensitivity in detecting variation in fillet texture. Instrumental texture was related to sensory measurements to determine attachments' accuracy in assessing cooked fillet texture. Weight of raw fillets decreased after 30-d frozen storage. Fillet weight further decreased after cooking. Moisture content decreased while fat content remained constant. The AK attachment detected differences in energy of shear, which decreased after 30-d …

Exploring Influences On Parent Support For Child Physical Activity In West Virginia, Jill A. Nolan Aug 2011

Exploring Influences On Parent Support For Child Physical Activity In West Virginia, Jill A. Nolan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Physical activity enhances child health. On average, boys are more active than girls. The causes of this disparity are not fully known, but are likely due to factors at multiple levels including individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy. Further, gender stereotypes that associate males with sports and physical activity behavior may also influence child physical activity. What is known is that girls benefit from physical activity just as boys do, and that parental support for boys' physical activity is generally higher than is parental support for girls. Additionally, parental supportive behavior for childhood physical activity is positively associated with increased …

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain Aug 2011

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years several mechanistic animal studies have proposed new insights, including the role of endothelial dysfunction, in the pathogenesis of common cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies in humans have followed up these emerging leads from animal models. Because traditional risk factors have been shown not to completely explain all the observed risk of cardiometabolic outcomes in the general population, there is a need to examine novel mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction in population-based studies, so as to identify new ways of preventing and/or treating these diseases. …

Nanosize Effects In The Magnetic Properties Of The Two Layered Hydroxides Of Nickel, James D. Rall Aug 2011

Nanosize Effects In The Magnetic Properties Of The Two Layered Hydroxides Of Nickel, James D. Rall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Investigations of properties of materials with lower lattice dimensionality (one and two dimensions) often provides good opportunity to advance physics since solutions to corresponding theoretical models are more easily obtained. In this work, results on magnetic properties of two quasi two-dimensional (2D) systems viz. the layered hydroxides of nickel, beta-Ni(OH)2 and alpha-Ni(OH)2, are reported. For beta-Ni(OH)2, there have been conflicting reports in the literature whether the magnetic ordering is ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. For the less stable alpha-Ni(OH) 2 with the larger spacing between the layers, the nature of magnetism is largely unexplained. Therefore, the results and their interpretation present here …

Nanocapillary Membrane Devices: A Study In Electrokinetic Transport Phenomena, Jarrod Schiffbauer Aug 2011

Nanocapillary Membrane Devices: A Study In Electrokinetic Transport Phenomena, Jarrod Schiffbauer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There is considerable interest in developing micro-total analysis systems, also known as lab-on-a-chip devices, for applications in chemical and biological analysis. These devices often employ electrokinetic transport phenomena to move, mix, concentrate and separate dissolved species. The details of these phenomena in micro- and nanometer scale geometries are not fully understood; consequently, the basic principles of device operation are often unclear. For example, nanocapillary membranes (NCM) and other nanometer-sized passages can exhibit charge-selectivity and rectification effects similar to those observed in biological membranes. This dissertation addresses several issues related to ion transport in these membranes. Leading-order 1D steady-state models for …

Implementation Of A Helicopter Flight Simulator With Individual Blade Control, Andrew G. Zinchiak May 2011

Implementation Of A Helicopter Flight Simulator With Individual Blade Control, Andrew G. Zinchiak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nearly all modern helicopters are designed with a swashplate-based system for control of the main rotor blades. However, the swashplate-based approach does not provide the level of redundancy necessary to cope with abnormal actuator conditions. For example, if an actuator fails (becomes locked) on the main rotor, the cyclic inputs are consequently fixed and the helicopter may become stuck in a flight maneuver. This can obviously be seen as a catastrophic failure, and would likely lead to a crash.;These types of failures can be overcome with the application of individual blade control (IBC). IBC is achieved using the blade pitch …

From Peasant To Pariah: Changing English Perceptions Of The Irish From The 1820s Through The 1860s, Traci J. Scully May 2011

From Peasant To Pariah: Changing English Perceptions Of The Irish From The 1820s Through The 1860s, Traci J. Scully

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While the historiography of English perceptions of the Irish in the later period of the Victorian era is extensive, there is a dearth of research in tracing the origins of these perceptions. The connection between England and Ireland dates back centuries, and the relationship was neutral at best and extremely violent at worst. Historians such as L. Perry Curtis have analyzed the mass media of these later decades to argue that the English saw their neighbors as subhuman creatures in the racial hierarchy.;However, this image did not emerge from a single event, but rather evolved over the tumultuous earlier decades …
