Residual feed intake (RFI) class differences in gut function and grazing intake were evaluated using 14 crossbred steer progeny of first parity dams with known RFI phenotypes and a commercially available Angus sire. Steers were housed in a drylot facility and fed a forage based complete feed ad libitum, a forage diet at maintenance (1.5% BW as fed), and a concentrate diet at maintenance in Exp. 1, 4, and 5 respectively. Voluntary DMI and solid and liquid passage rate were evaluated while grazing (Exp. 2 and 3, respectively). Plasma concentrations of albumin (ALB), urea nitrogen (UN), cholesterol (CHOL), glucose (GLU), …
A Context Centric Model For Building A Knowledge Advantage Machine Based On Personal Ontology Patterns, Luyi Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Throughout the industrial era societal advancement could be attributed in large part to introduction a plethora of electromechanical machines all of which exploited a key concept known as Mechanical Advantage. In the post-industrial era exploitation of knowledge is emerging as the key enabler for societal advancement. With the advent of the Internet and the Web, while there is no dearth of knowledge, what is lacking is an efficient and practical mechanism for organizing knowledge and presenting it in a comprehensible form appropriate for every context. This is the fundamental problem addressed by my dissertation.;We begin by proposing a novel architecture …
Ecological Effects Of And Recovery Following Surface Mining And Pasture Reclamation, Michael Levy
Ecological Effects Of And Recovery Following Surface Mining And Pasture Reclamation, Michael Levy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Surface mining with concurrent reclamation to pasture is a major driver of land use and cover change in Appalachia and constitutes a massive disturbance. Prior research suggests that some aspects of recovery are either slow or incomplete. We examined ecosystem structure---including soil physical and chemical properties, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) infectivity and community, and plant diversity and community composition---on a chronosequence of pasture-reclaimed surface mines and an unmined pasture in northern West Virginia. We also examined the effect of inoculating red clover, grown with high or low phosphorus, with AMF communities from old and young pasture-reclaimed surface mines and an …
Effects Of Residual Moisture And Zero Conditioning Time On Maximum Theoretical Specific Gravity, John Elias Crane
Effects Of Residual Moisture And Zero Conditioning Time On Maximum Theoretical Specific Gravity, John Elias Crane
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A critical issue in determining theoretical maximum specific gravity (Gmm) for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures appears when the aggregates used have high absorption. This high absorption in aggregates, like air cooled iron blast furnace slag, can greatly affect the Gmm values of the sample, which in turn affects the contractor's ability to accurately evaluate the volumetric properties of the asphalt concrete. WV Paving, the largest asphalt paving contractor in West Virginia, uses slag aggregates in many of their mixes. There is concern that the dry-back procedure used to determine Gmm of these mixtures is not producing reliable results. Gmm …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) is an invasive climbing, twining vine that can grow up into the forest canopy effectively inhibiting growth and light exposure on affected trees. A local landowner who had treated bittersweet with various rates of a glyphosate-based herbicide claimed that higher than recommended rates of herbicide were needed to effectively control the invasive plant. This study was established to assess the validity of this claim and to explore the interaction of glyphosate and surfactant effects on the efficacy of bittersweet control. The goal was to determine an ideal treatment of herbicide and surfactant rates for the effective …

Calculating The Surface Seismic Signal From A Trapped Miner, Adeniyi A. Adebisi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The recent Sago mine disaster has highlighted the need to fundamentally analyze the practical detection limitations of a mine rescue seismic system (Heasley, 2006). In various field tests, it was discovered that the surface peak particle velocity resulting from the trapped miner who pounds on the mine roof becomes undetectable past a certain distance from the surface geophones. In order to provide the mine rescuer the understanding of the exact extent of this distance; and the foreknowledge about the excepted magnitude of the surface peak particle movement in terms of: depth, geology and offset angle, this study was performed.;To achieve …
Effect Of Sediment Composition On The Uniformity Of Experimentally-Formed Methane Hydrate, Terrence R. Ryan
Effect Of Sediment Composition On The Uniformity Of Experimentally-Formed Methane Hydrate, Terrence R. Ryan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Experimentalists that try to duplicate the methane hydrate found in natural systems have regularly made non-uniform hydrate in packed sediments. Some element of the natural system is missing from the experimental procedure. The goal of this research was to discover what role sediment composition and grain size play in the uniformity of experimentally-formed methane hydrate. The discoveries were quite surprising.;The motivation for this research lies in the analysis of sediment samples and well-log data from the 2010 Mount Elbert, AK Stratigraphic Test Well. Sedimentological analysis of core samples from this well indicated that a thin section within the methane hydrate …

Comprehensive And Integrated Model For Atmospheric Status In Sealed Underground Mine Areas, Jianwei Cheng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mine gas explosion is one of the most feared hazards in the coal industry worldwide. More often one gas explosion related accident can cause the death of multiple coal miners. Since the beginning of coal mining, numerous mine workers have lost their lives as a result of gas explosions. Such occurrences have long been a major concern for mining engineers. Examination of two coal mine disasters (Sago mine and UBB mine) that have occurred in the U.S. in recent years reveals that all explosions originated from or around the sealed areas. Therefore, a good understanding of the atmospheric status in …

Negative Reinforcement By Timeout From Avoidance: The Roles Of Discriminative Cues, Shock-Frequency Reduction, And Response-Effort Reduction, Anne M. Foreman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Timeout from avoidance is an effective reinforcer, but the reason is not firmly established. Rats responded on concurrent schedules of avoidance and timeout. Pressing the right lever postponed shocks according to a schedule with a response-shock interval of 30 s and a shock-shock interval of 5 s, and pressing the left lever produced 2-min timeouts according to a variable-interval 45-s schedule. To assess the roles of shock-frequency reduction, response-effort reduction, and signals in varying the reinforcing efficacy of timeout, three experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, to assess the point at which the reinforcing efficacy of the timeouts would be …

A Theoretical Relationship Between Guardianship And Techniques Of Neutralization: A Qualitative Analysis Of Digital Piracy, Christopher D. Davies
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research is a qualitative analysis of digital piracy at the height of Napster in 1999. The findings support the notion that technology has given rise to several new techniques of neutralization. In some cases these techniques are completely new and in others they are 21st century updates to traditional techniques. Furthermore, this research uses forum posts from USENET to determine that guardianship as created by Cohen and Felson's Routine Activities Theory is uniquely connected to neutralization based on two unique guardianship qualities, authority and capacity.
