One group received instruction using the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) method (n = 26), while the other group was taught using the Jigsaw method (n = 27); both groups were taught for one semester (15-weeks) by the same instructor. Although both cooperative groups reported statistically significant achievement gains for each application, the Jigsaw group scored significantly higher than the STAD group with the DOS {dollar}(F(1, …

Role Of Estrogen And Boron In Calcium Metabolism And Eggshell Formation In The Chicken., Xuezhong Qin Jan 1992

Role Of Estrogen And Boron In Calcium Metabolism And Eggshell Formation In The Chicken., Xuezhong Qin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Ca supply for eggshell formation depends on the rate of calcium transport in both the intestine and shell gland. Although estrogen (E{dollar}\\sb2){dollar} is known to play an important role in the regulation of Ca transport in these tissues, the mechanism responsible for this effect has not been elucidated. Study 1, 2, and 3 were thus conducted to determine the role of E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} in the regulation of Ca-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase (AP) in both the shell gland and intestine of immature chicks. In the shell gland, E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} treatment increased the Vmax of Ca-ATPase without increasing the affinity of Ca-ATPase for …

The Effects Of Self-Graphing On Regular, At-Risk And Special Needs Students' Oral Reading Fluency And Comprehension., William D. Farrer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are regular and at-risk students in regular education who are not progressing academically. The emphasis of keeping students in the regular reading classroom, while meeting their individual needs makes effective documentation vital. This study indicated that frequent measuring of student progress by collecting and graphing data can be useful. A multiple baseline design across behaviors and students was employed to determine if self-graphing would affect greater and more rapid change in student progress. All students showed improvement when they self-graphed words per minute (WPM) and rated their daily performance. Because improvement in WPM occurred only when self-graphing was introduced, …

The Relationships Among Teachers' Immediacy Behaviors, Credibility, And Social Style And Students' Motivation And Learning: Comparisons Among Cultures., Catherine Ann Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research offers insight concerning the roles of teachers' verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, and credibility in American classrooms, but little work has been done to test the universal effects of these constructs. The primary purpose of this research was to extend previous research by comparing in different cultural groups the relationships among students' perceptions of teachers' immediacy, credibility, and social style in relation to students' perceptions of their own motivation and learning. Relationships among students' perceptions of teachers' verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, competence, character, assertiveness, and responsiveness and students' motivation, cognitive learning, affective learning, and behavioral learning as well as …

Transformative Teachers: Lives Of Passion And Purpose., Laura Van Vorhis Jan 1992

Transformative Teachers: Lives Of Passion And Purpose., Laura Van Vorhis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This heuristic, cross-cultural study explored how transformative teachers embody, nurture, and convey their pedagogical purposes in the classroom. Transformative teachers challenge the status quo in an area of personal importance, whether it be teacher-student relationships, teaching for social change, teaching for personal growth and meaning, or teaching beyond traditional academic standards. Participants included eight secondary and post-secondary teachers from North America and Lithuania. Because participants were selected through a student nomination process as being educators who inspired learners to change personal circumstances, join a political or social movement, or develop a purpose in life, they represented not only different academic …

"Losers At The Game?" Male Protagonists In Four Novels Of Henry James., Sandra Rosalynne Woods Jan 1991

"Losers At The Game?" Male Protagonists In Four Novels Of Henry James., Sandra Rosalynne Woods

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the male American protagonists from four of Henry James's major novels, Roderick Hudson, The American, The Bostonians, and The Ambassadors. Considerations of the generic Jamesian hero usually include James's heroines, and numerous works have concentrated on James's female protagonists, but few comparable attempts have been made to focus exclusively on James's male protagonists. Both the dynamic character of James's literary career and the extraordinary range of James's female characters suggest that such a study may be warranted. The scale of modes delineated by Northrop Frye in Anatomy of Criticism provides an archetypal base for this study. Because …

Computable General Equilibrium Models For United States Nonfuel Minerals Policy., Shih-Mo Lin Jan 1991

Computable General Equilibrium Models For United States Nonfuel Minerals Policy., Shih-Mo Lin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over the past fifteen years, the U.S. mineral industry has undergone profound structural change--a change which is a combination of both supply- and demand-side effects. On the supply side, the once advantageous and profitable position held by the U.S. mineral industry has been gradually replaced by its competitors worldwide, resulting in its loss of competitiveness in not only domestic but also international markets. On the demand side, the growth rate of both intensity of use for conventional metals and GNP, the two widely used measures explaining the demand for metals, has been slowing down for most of the past twenty …

Development Of A Measure Of Therapist Trustworthiness, Gregory M. Alberts Jan 1991

Development Of A Measure Of Therapist Trustworthiness, Gregory M. Alberts

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Graduate and professional therapist training programs emphasize the acquisition of technical skills (Stevenson & Norcross, 1987) and deemphasize the promotion of interpersonal and relationship competencies (Lambert, 1989; Schiffman, 1987 ) . The content of such training programs and the procedures by which the competencies of prospective mental health practitioners are developed and evaluated have been critic ized because neither are based on an adequate fund of clinically relevant empirical knowledge (Ford, 1979; Garfield, 1977; Matarazzo, 1978; Ponterotto & Furlong, 1985; Scofield & Yoxtheimer, 1983).

Regulation Of Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Function., Linda Gayle Billips Jan 1991

Regulation Of Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Function., Linda Gayle Billips

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stromal cells are key components of the hemopoietic microenvironment of the bone marrow and are now known to function as primary regulators of hemopoietic cell production. This study addresses the role of stromal cells in B lymphocyte production. Initial experiments have established that B lymphocyte development is dependent on the presence of a heterogeneous mixture of stromal cells. In addition, recent studies in this and other laboratories have shown that exposure of stromal cells to cytokines alters their production of hemopoietic growth factors and, as a result, their hemopoietic regulatory function. The experiments presented here specifically demonstrate cytokine-induced changes in …

Essays On The Theory Of Voluntary Provision Of Public Goods., Ning Gong Jan 1991

Essays On The Theory Of Voluntary Provision Of Public Goods., Ning Gong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is a set of four essays on the theory of voluntary contributions of public goods. The first essay discusses an individual's decision under uncertainty and suggests that a first-order prediction error only leads to a second-order utility loss to himself, but the utility change to the other people and the change of social welfare are first-order. It is also shown that the risk averse individuals would like to give precise information of their true levels of contributions under certain conditions. The second essay addresses the sustainability of the Pareto provision of public goods. The results of this paper …

A Comparison Of Seat Belt Use Attitudes And Behaviors Of Regular And Exceptional Students And Their Parents., Sandra Kay Vanin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Each year nearly one million individuals suffer a head trauma. Many will sustain permanent injuries resulting in behavior and learning problems. In addition, both the individual and the family will accrue thousands of dollars in hospital and rehabilitation costs. It has been estimated that 4,500 lives are saved and 119,000 serious injuries are prevented each year by using a seat belt. Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have mandatory seat belt laws. West Virginia, with the third highest non-seat belt use, has failed in three legislative sessions to pass such legislation. Over 200 Monongalia County fourth, fifth and sixth …

Self-Understanding And Empathy Development In Seasoned Psychotherapists: A Qualitative Study., Linda M. Sandel Jan 1991

Self-Understanding And Empathy Development In Seasoned Psychotherapists: A Qualitative Study., Linda M. Sandel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

How do persons come to want to be helpers? What types of circumstances and life events help psychotherapists nurture and develop personal and professional self-awareness and self-understanding, as well as empathic ability? How does the practice of psychotherapy influence the lives of practitioners? Few research efforts have addressed these questions. An extensive literature review on the development of self-understanding in therapists suggested that the paradigm of the "wounded-healer", and the concept of narcissism, have often been used as a basis for exploring answers to these questions. Conceptually, it has been suggested that the healing of personal issues is a critical …

Rewriting The Self, Writing The Other: An Investigation Of Recent American Epistolary Novels., Anne Lieberman Bower Jan 1990

Rewriting The Self, Writing The Other: An Investigation Of Recent American Epistolary Novels., Anne Lieberman Bower

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A number of recent critical works apply twentieth century literary theories to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century epistolary novels. However, in spite of the existence of a number of intriguing twentieth-century letter novels, there have been no in-depth studies of modern uses of this form, and only a limited number of articles that analyze the epistolarity of modern and contemporary novel fictions. What makes this condition surprising is that many of the form's features are so sympathetic to aesthetic and philosophic issues of our day. Using deconstructive, reader-response and feminist perspectives, this dissertation investigates the ways the letter novel is used by …
