Taking A Stand: A Naturalistic Study Of Stance Negotiation In Student Teaching., Jody Messinger Wolfe Jan 1989

Taking A Stand: A Naturalistic Study Of Stance Negotiation In Student Teaching., Jody Messinger Wolfe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research was an exploratory investigation of stance in teacher learning. The concept of stance is suggested by the work of Bruner and Schon and is rooted in a constructivist perspective on knowledge. When applied to teaching, stance can be defined as a teacher's position toward the world of teaching, discernible in the verbal and behavioral language of practice. A teacher's stance is negotiated through experiencing various elements of teaching, constructing cognitive representations of these experiences, and taking a stand toward them. The researcher employed a naturalistic design to study stance in the context of one secondary Social Studies student …

Citation Analysis And Emerging Technologies: Foundational Technical Developments In Optical Disk Technology., Thomas Tunnell Wrenn Jan 1989

Citation Analysis And Emerging Technologies: Foundational Technical Developments In Optical Disk Technology., Thomas Tunnell Wrenn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One reason a given technology emerges is that the technical means of the technology are improved--made more efficient, faster, more reliable. This causes changes in the "socio-technical interface" between the technical means and the organization in which it is applied, and it becomes practical to use the improved technical means in new applications and additional organizations. Technical developments that decisively affect the technical workability and the economic usefulness of a product or process, which permit rapid changes in a technology and its rate of emergence, are termed foundational technical developments (FTDs). We often want to be able to identify which …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present paper describes a program of research to develop, test and refine a prototype of computer-based instructional (CBI) software that teaches a sequelic intraverbal repertoire efficiently and effectively. Significant educational implications arise from any verbal behavior research that both sheds light on how an intraverbal repertoire can be changed, and which simultaneously leads to a teaching technology that rapidly brings about high fluency. The present research centers around an engineering effort to do just that, beginning with a computer-based analogue of precision teaching SAFMEDS, a method of teaching using flashcards in precisely timed and recorded sessions. Programmed in BASIC, …

Identification Of The Development In Teaching English As A Foreign Language In China And Suggestions For Curriculum Improvement., Jing Jiang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The increasing needs of international contacts for modernization program have created favorable conditions for the study of English as a foreign language (EFL) in the People's Republic of China over the last ten years. Thanks to the support by the government, millions of people are involved in learning the language for quick acquisition. However, because of little improvement from traditionally instructional methods in EFL the teaching efficiency for acquisition remains relatively low. On the other hand, during last few decades, foreign language teaching, as a very specialized area of education, has experienced tremendous changes in theory and practice in most …

Sir Thomas Boleyn: The Courtier Diplomat, 1477-1539., William Hughes Dean

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work chronicles the life and assesses the character of Sir Thomas Boleyn, Viscount Rochford, Earl of Wiltshire and Ormond, the Keeper of the Privy Seal. It is asserted, for the most part, that the father of the unfortunate Anne Boleyn rose in the esteem and honor of King Henry VIII steadily and on his own merits, making his greatest mark as a diplomat. It is conceded that he probably would not have risen as far as he did without some help from the involvement of both of his daughters with the King. Educationally superior to the vast majority of …

The Cost Efficiency And Communication Effects Associated With Brand Name Exposure Within Motion Pictures, Eva Marie Steortz Jan 1987

The Cost Efficiency And Communication Effects Associated With Brand Name Exposure Within Motion Pictures, Eva Marie Steortz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Brand name products have been making appearances on the silver screen since the beginning of the cinema. Jack Daniels bourbon made its film debut when Joan Crawford served it in the 1945 movie, Mildred Pierce. However, only recently has such a great effort been exerted by those involved in this "advertising" technique. Many credit this growing trend to E.T., Steven Spielberg's lovable little alien creature, who followed a trail of Reese's Pieces to a documented 65 percent increase in sales for the Hershey company in 1982.

Interestingly, there is no research available concerning the communication effects associated with a brand …

Eighty intermediate level subjects of a private elementary school in Weirton, West Virginia were administered the Group Embedded Figures Test (Oltman, Raskin & Witkin, 1971) and the Learning Style Inventory (Dunn, …

John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt Jan 1986

John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

From an investigation of the entire published works of John Dewey, as well as much of his personal correspondence, this dissertation described and analyzed Dewey's concept of the child. It was discovered that Dewey's concept evolved through interactions with his family and, to a lesser extent, his social milieu. Despite some inconsistencies in his writings about the child, arising primarily from his attempts to persuade his audience to make societal changes benefiting the child, Dewey developed a cohesive, comprehensive concept--a concept which emphasized a view of the child as an active, growing being. Ten aspects of the child were examined …

Comparison Of Acquisition And Generalization Levels Of Manual Signing With Moderately Retarded Persons (Language, Parent Training)., Cynthia Sue Allen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Educators working with mentally retarded and other severely communication-delayed students have begun incorporating sign language into their curriculum to promote language development. In most instances, these methods do not facilitate generalization to the natural environment where the language is actually used. This study investigated whether acquisition of sign language with moderately mentally retarded individuals is attained faster when taught in home settings by the parent or at school by the teacher in a clinical environment. Six students, ages six to twenty, attending a public special education program in central West Virginia served as subjects. All were diagnosed as moderately mentally …

The research in the study consisted of individual interviews with the five board of education members and the county school superintendent serving in one selected school system in each of the eight …

The 1954 Geneva Conference: Eisenhower's Indochina Policy., Francis Noland Dawson Jan 1985

The 1954 Geneva Conference: Eisenhower's Indochina Policy., Francis Noland Dawson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Indochina phase of the Geneva Conference of 1954 played a critical role in the ending of the First Indochina War and prepared the way for the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam conflict. Little is understood of the conference because of a paucity of information available. Recently, this deficiency has been corrected somewhat as various departments and agencies have begun to declassify documents. An analysis of these new materials reveals that the United States did not have a well-defined policy in mid-1954 and that Eisenhower responded in an ad hoc fashion to conditions on the battlefield in …
