The Effects Of Collaborative Learning On Writing Quality, Writing Apprehension, And Writing Attitude Of College Students In A Developmental English Program., Martha Boger Shrewsbury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined sixteen basic writers in a college developmental English program to ascertain what effect collaborative learning strategies would have on the writing apprehension, writing anxiety, and writing quality. Students operated in a collaborative environment: They followed a writing process and arrived at consensus within their group at each stage of writing. All writers still worried about their writing, but they collectively agreed that they spent more time on writing and rewriting. In short, writers had a vision of what they were expected to accomplish and demonstrated that writing was a powerful tool. This study encourages students and faculty …

During the past several years, an increased number of rapes have been reported in the adolescent population (Ageton, 1983; Erickson & Rapkin, 1991; Gidycz & Koss, 1989; Hall & Flannery, 1984; Hayman, 1971; Katz & Mazur, 1979; Krasner, Meyer, & Carroll, 1976; MaCahill, Meyer, & Fischman, 1979; Mann, 1981; McDermott, 1979; Medea & Thompson, 1974; U.S. Dept. of Justice, 1985; Walmsley & White, 1979; Warshaw, 1988). The problem has become so widespread that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has included reduction of rape and attempted rape of women aged 12 and older as a goal in its …
Pearl Buck: A Cultural Bridge Across The Pacific., Kang Liao
Pearl Buck: A Cultural Bridge Across The Pacific., Kang Liao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pearl Buck was the first American woman writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature. However, she has been largely neglected by American critics since 1940. She was severely criticized in China in the 30s and 60s. Was she overestimated at first? Did she misrepresent China? What are the main values of her literary works? Are they still valuable today? This dissertation applies the reception theory to analyzing the reasons of her early and the ensuing neglect of her works by the critics, historicizes the significance of her function in changing the American image of the Chinese people, uses the …

The Relation Between Marital Conflict And Child Adjustment: An Examination Of Parental And Child Repertoires., Beverley Kim Beach
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Impelled by research deficits identified by previous researchers, the relation between marital conflict and child adjustment was investigated within a repertoire-based paradigm to yield a more complete understanding of the etiology and maintenance of child adjustment problems. Specific parental and child affective, cognitive, and motoric conflict repertoires were obtained via an analogue task, and were related to 10 to 13 year olds' internalizing and externalizing problems. The correspondence between parental and child conflict repertoires was examined, as were the relations between intra-individual affective, cognitive, and motoric conflict responses. Findings further elucidated the relation between marital conflict and child psychopathology; specific …

Social Welfare Policy In The American States: The Case Of Afdc., Sung Chul Kim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is divided into two main parts. The first part presents an intergovernmental model of the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program, focusing on program benefits and eligibility criteria. The second part explores the impact of state political institutions--the governor, the state legislature, and the state bureaucracy--on AFDC policy outcomes. There has been a great deal of research on the structure and operations of intergovernmental programs in the United States (Beam et. al. 1983; Dilger 1989). There have been relatively few research efforts, however, that attempt to differentiate the relative impact that federal, state, and local government officials …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Advanced packaging and high density interconnections are emerging technologies as silicon MOS device dimensions scale down to minimum physical limits. Multi-chip Modules and Wafer Scale Integration improve packing density, and provide solutions to board area issues beyond the capabilities of even the most densely packed surface mount technologies. Such technologies could confront increasingly complex interconnection constraints, and might provide opportunities for the insertion of high performance optical interconnections into future microelectronic systems. However, successful integration of optics with microelectronic system technologies requires a careful evaluation of the practical issues confronting monolithic co-integration of GaAs optoelectronics with high performance silicon CMOS …

Inter-Regional Tax Incidence With Public Services: A General Equilibrium Analysis., Sudha Subrahmanyam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My research investigates the consequences for equity between and within the regions of an economy when one region alters its taxing policy, and the tax change results in a corresponding change in public expenditure. In contrast to extant theory, I incorporate the effects of an accompanying change in public expenditure on tax incidence in my analysis. I demonstrate that actual tax incidence may be quite different from current predictions because the pattern of change in public expenditure has a significant effect on the ultimate incidence of a tax change. I develop a methodological framework to identify the impact of tax …
